William Fichtner Talks Shredder Role In 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles'; Reveals A Major Change

It's been obvious right from the start that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot was going to be different from the version most are familiar with. The only question was how much of a change would producer Michael Bay allow for? We've heard rumors of alien origins and a title that may simply be Ninja Turtles, and when William Fichtner recently revealed he would be playing the very Japanese villain Shredder, the assumption was that he too was undergoing some level of alteration. Now Fichtner has opened up a little about his role, and indeed this won't be a Shredder anyone has seen before.

While talking to Screen Rant about his heelish turn in The Lone Ranger, Fichtner spoke a little about Shredder and provided a few new details...

Fichtner: “I actually play a guy named Eric Sachs in the movie. And then he goes through a few stages in his existence.”

The interviewer wasn't so sure about that last name, but whatever it is it's clearly not Oroku Saki, the original Shredder's real name. Although when sounded out, Eric Sachs does kind of sound like a play on Oroku Saki, so maybe that's exactly what they were aiming for. Fichtner went on to a bit further and hints that are more significant changes to the Turtles canon to come...

Fichtner: “But Turtles is coming together very, very cool. There is a whole interesting dynamic that happens in the world of Turtles and all I can really say about it at this point while working on it is that the Turtle film, it’s not like anything that I remember about the Turtles before. I feel like this Michael Bay-produced movie is just gonna really be something else. I’m pretty excited.”

If they're willing to screw around with Shredder, then it stands to reason that the extraterrestrial origin for the Turtles is also still in play. Here's hoping we get some set photos of Fichtner in costume soon, assuming he even has a special costume. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens on June 6th 2014.
