Punch Drunk DVDs

G.I. Joe: Retaliation
There are great movies and there are movies you can watch over and over again, you'd think these would overlap but it's actually rarely the case. G.I. Joe: Retaliation is probably the #1 movie this year that I've counted down the days until it's DVD release. I had problems with it sure, but it's visual commitment to the source material and the amazing job they did with the ninja side of the story make this one flick I'll be sure to watch over and over.

On The Road:
This adaptation of a beloved Jack Kerouac novel was supposed to be Kristen Stewart's post-Twilight coming out party. That old cliche where the child star does something very....adult... to separate herself from her former image and establish herself as a serious adult actress. While On The Road wasn't horrible it certainly didn't do much for Stewart's star power (unless by star power you mean highlight the blogosphere for her first nude scene). Slightly confusing, totally a mess and most importantly downright boring On The Road is going to appeal to a very small audience and needless to say your rental money is better spent somewhere else.

Black Rock:
Three friends head to a remote wooded location for a weekend getaway and end up getting hunted by some locals. Not the most original plot to say the least. What it lacks in originality and script is made up in it's cast, Kate Bosworth, Lake Bell, and Katie Asleton. To say these three elevate the movie is an understatement but is it enough? Honestly, no, I don't think so. While the leads make the film watchable it doesn't end up being something I would go out of my way to see. A serviceable enough thriller for a Friday night holding down the couch but not much more.

The Devil's Backbone:
Written and directed by Guillermo Del Toro who, in my opinon, did his absolute best stuff before hitting it big with Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth. The Devil's Backbone while not the top of the list (that would be Cronos for those keeping score) is an amazing thriller that feels very 'Del Toro'. Taking place in an orphanage during the Spanish Civil War this film packs in all of Del Toro's trademark's in a suspenseful, satisfying package. A must for Del Toro fan's a huge suggestion for everyone else.
