Sony May Be Developing a Young Aunt May 'Spider-Man' Spinoff
Aunt May is one of the longest-lived, iconic characters in Marvel Comics history, but damn they've told some terrible stories with her. That's going to happen when you've got a character who is too old to be part of the action, yet is so closely tied to Spider-Man. One of those really awful ideas was back in 2004 when Marvel Comics released Trouble, a mature-themed miniseries about a young, promiscuous Aunt May and her "baby daddy" problems. It was brutally bad (and a sales disaster), but now a rumor from Latino Review suggests Sony may be looking to top it. Poor Aunt May.
According to the site, Sony is now considering a solo Aunt May spinoff movie, one that wouldn't star Sally Field (booo!!!!) and feature zero Spidey. The story would be set when Aunt May was young and responsibility-free, and most baffling of all it's being described as an espionage in the vein of Mad Men. Uh, say what?
So we can all agree that Sony has royally botched their Amazing Spider-Man franchise, and watching them flail around trying to correct course has been painful. But this idea sounds absolutely bonkers. Hopefully this isn't what they were planning for their female-led Spidey spinoff. Obviously this sounds like a terrible idea but would anybody be surprised if it turned out to be true?
