'Toy Story 4' Coming in 2017; John Lasseter to Direct

When Pixar released the Oscar-winning Toy Story 3 and proclaimed it would be the last, fans knew they would see their favorite characters again in short films. And that has been the case for the most part, but it never really felt like the franchise was over. Tom Hanks hinted at another film only months later, and with Pixar relying more on sequels than ever, Toy Story 4 was inevitable. And so, here we are.

During an investor call today Disney revealed that Toy Story 4 was coming to theaters in June 2017, with John Lasseter returning to direct. That's pretty much all we know but we can probably expect Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and the rest of the popular Pixar voice cast to return. Penning the screenplay will be Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, who wrote and starred in the romantic comedy Celeste & Jesse Forever.

Lasseter's last film was the critically-panned Cars 2, and this will be a return to the franchise after directing Toy Story 1 & 2. Is this good news, though? Well, for fans of these characters it absolutely is, but those wishing Pixar would focus on new endeavors may be a little turned off. Either way, Toy Story 4 is happening and there is bound to be more news on it soon.
