The Long-Awaited First Trailer for 'Fantastic Four' is Here!

Here it is! After months of literally nothing from Josh Trank's Fantastic Four reboot, yesterday we got our first official set photo and now the trailer has arrived weeks ahead of schedule. From the beginning it's been clear that Trank was working from a very different version of Marvel's "First Family" than fans were accustomed to, and with the melancholic, deep sci-fi flavor of this trailer he seems to have hit the nail on the head. And the best part is that it still keeps plenty under wraps to be discovered later. Impressive, but the key is going to be how the fanboys react.

The film stars Miles Teller as Reed Richards, Kate Mara as Sue Storm, Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm, and Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm with Toby Kebbell as Doctor Doom, renamed Victor Domashev. Here's the official synopsis:

FANTASTIC FOUR, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.

Fantastic Four opens August 7th.

Kate Mara Eyed for 'Star Wars' Spinoff; Kaya Scodelario in Talks for 'Pirates of the Caribbean 5'

With Tatiana Maslany, Rooney Mara, and Felicity Jones reportedly testing for the female lead in Gareth Edwards' standalone Star Wars film, a new name has been added to the list. Kate Mara, who will be seen as Sue Storm in the upcoming Fantastic For reboot, has also read for the role according to Variety. At this point details on the film are still few, although rumors persist it will center on bounty hunters. Why not bring all of these ladies on and make it an entire group of female bounty hunters? I'd pay to see that. The film is scheduled to open on December 16th 2016.

And it looks like Kaya Scodelario (Wuthering Heights, The Maze Runner) could join Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Deadline says early talks with her have begun for the female lead role, which she has been a contender for since late last year. She'd be joining Depp, Javier Bardem, Brenton Thwaites, and the possibility is still out there that Orlando Bloom could return. The film sets sail in July 2017.

Kate Mara Eyes 'The Martian'; John Leguizamo goes to 'Meadowland; Dennis Haysbert Joins 'Ted 2'

Ridley Scott's adaptation of The Martian already has an incredible cast shaping up with Matt Damon in the lead and Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, and Mackenzie Davis circling roles, but now Deadline is reporting Kate Mara (House of Cards, Fantastic Four) has been made an offer. The Davis story wasn't out there long before this one came out, and it may be that Mara is in line for the same part. Penned by Drew Goddard, The Martian centers on an astronaut who must survive long enough to be rescued after he's stranded on Mars.

John Leguizamo, Merritt Wever (Emmy winner from Nurse Jackie), and Nick Sandow have joined Meadowland, the directorial debut of cinematographer Reed Morano. Olivia Wilde, Luke Wilson, Elisabeth Moss, Giovanni Ribisi, Ty Simpkins, Scott Mescudi (aka Kid Cudi), Mark Feuerstein, Kevin Corrigan and Juno Temple star in the drama about a New York couple who take very different approaches to healing after their son's disappearance. I'm a huge fan of Wever's and have been for years. Hopefully this leads to more big screen work for her.

Dennis Haysbert, last seen as Manute in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, will make a "fun cameo" in Seth MacFarlane's Ted 2, joining Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Morgan Freeman, and Amanda Seyfried. All we know about the plot is that Ted will be in need of a high-powered civil rights attorney at some point, which to me already sounds funny.  Ted 2 opens June 26th 2015. Haysbert has also landed a role in Dead Rising, based on the hit Capcom video game. Zach Lipovksy (Leprechaun: Origins) is directing the zombie flick for exclusive premier on Crackle.com before receiving a multiplatform release. Haysbert will be seen next in the racial satire, Dear White People.

Gary Oldman, Shia LaBeouf, and Kate Mara Join Dito Montiel's 'Man Down'

One problem indie filmmaker Dito Montiel has never had is securing terrific casts for his movies nobody shows up to see. He helped build Channing Tatum's career with A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints and Fighting, but has really hit the skids with his last two films, Empire State and The Son of No One. For his next film, Man Down, Montiel has secured his best group of talent yet.

Gary Oldman, Kate Mara (Fantastic Four), and Shia LaBeouf have joined the Man Down cast, which features as script by Adam Simon. The psychological thriller follows "a haunted Afghanistan war veteran who attempts to come to terms with his past while searching for his family in a post-apocalyptic America." No word on who will play what character but LaBeouf would seem to fit the soldier role, especially after starring in the WWII film, Fury. It's a reunion for LaBeouf and Montiel who worked together on A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, a memoir based on the director's New York childhood.

Filming is set to begin next month.

Cue Outrage: Kate Mara Says 'Fantastic Four' Isn't Based on a Specific Story

With a cast that features Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, and Miles Teller, it should be pretty obvious that Josh Trank and 20th Century Fox aren't doing the same ol' Fantastic Four. This is going to be radically different, and apparently that will include far more than just the familial ties between the characters. In an interview with Esquire Mexico, Mara revealed that she isn't much of a comic book fan, but that it doesn't really matter because Fantastic Four will be presenting an entirely new story about Marvel's "First Family" of superheroes...

Mara:  "I've never been a fan of comics, I've never actually read one. I was going to for this movie but the director said it wasn't necessary. Well, actually he told us that we shouldn't do it because the plot won't be based on any history of anything already published. So I chose to follow his instructions. The one fact is I am a fan of comic book movies, so it's very exciting to be part of a movie like this."

Some are using this as a reason to get bent out of shape about the film before they've seen a single frame. But I don't see what all of the fuss is about. Would X-men: Days of Future Past have been any more or less great if Chris Claremont had never written the comic decades ago? Nope. And there were so many changes to it that it can be considered an entirely new story, anyway. And besides, we've seen the traditional Fantastic Four on screen already and everybody hated it. When you've got creators like Trank and Simon Kinberg the best thing to do is let them forge their own path with these characters rather than sticking to stuff we already know and have already seen. People really need to chill about stuff like this, and that includes those in my own tribe of comic book fanatics.

Fantastic Four is set to open on June 19th 2015.

Review: “Transcendence,” starring Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, and Paul Bettany

Hurray for Johnny Depp playing a regular, normal human being in a movie in the first time in seemingly forever; he’s not a faux Native American or a vampire or a pirate or a murderous barber or a breakdancing Mad Hatter. Nope, just a regular old scientific genius in Transcendence! Too bad, though, that the movie seems to care very little about that actual science. Instead, this is a frustratingly opaque script, a wasted ensemble cast, and an obvious “message” that makes Transcendence a pretty mediocre way to spend two hours.

Here’s the thing: We’ve been questioning the limits of technology, and the dangers of that limitlessness, in cinema for a very long time. I could point all the way back to 2001: A Space Odyssey, or at the modern classic The Matrix, which turns 15 years old this year (pour one out for the perfection of Keanu Reeves’s cheekbones in that movie). Regardless, the suggestion that it’s humans who corrupt the boundaries of discovery is not new; even as we’ve dealt with the evil HAL and the ever-multiplying Mr. Smith, fundamentally we’re used to the idea that in the wrong hands, science could be dangerous. And yet Transcendence tries to give us that exact same message like it’s a whole new thing, like it’s an idea no one has ever encountered before. Boo.

From first-time director Wally Pfister, who has served as Christopher Nolan’s cinematographer for years, I would expect better. But it’s the story from first-time Jack Paglen that’s really the problem here. There’s the genius scientist angle, of course, but also the love-triangle angle, the abused wife angle, and the technological anarchists angle, and the wise old mentor angle, and the FBI agent angle. There are too many angles! The movie ends up being all edges, without enough natural storytelling flow. It’s impressive how little tension there is in a movie that is ostensibly supposed to be about a human/computer hybrid that wants to take over the world.

The premise is this: Dr. Will Caster (Depp) and his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall), as well as their close friend Max (Paul Bettany), are at the forefront of a scientific revolution. Through extremely advanced software design and nanotechnology, the three of them think they have created a self-sustaining computer, an “intelligent machine” that functions like a human brain. For Will, the PINN (“physically independent neural network”) is his life’s work. He wants to understand how the world works; Evelyn wants to save it; and Max wants to save the people on it. With this breakthrough, they think they can get there.

Except for where not everyone agrees with Will’s ideas; in fact, there’s one anti-technology group, RIFT, which goes so far as to kill to stop the “intelligent machine.” A coordinated attack on labs connected with the Casters leaves researchers dead and Will dying, shot with a bullet traced with radiation poisoning. With only a few weeks left for him to live, Evelyn comes up with a crazy idea: uploading Will’s consciousness onto PINN, sending his neural network into the “physically independent” structure. It’s insane, Max says, but he’ll help her do it.

And when they succeed—to Evelyn’s amazement and Max’s regret—and Will’s consciousness goes inside the computer, and then the Internet, is when the film tries to probe at the how-much-science-is-too-much question. It’s a foregone conclusion that Will wants more power, that his genius can’t be contained within the structural limitations we’re accustomed to. But as Transcendence tries to deal with moral or ethical questions, it can’t do it gracefully. There’s never any question that Will’s consciousness might be dangerous to Evelyn and the world, because everyone tells us so—Max, Morgan Freeman’s mentor character, Cillian Murphy’s FBI agent. And there’s never any attention paid to explaining any of this science so that we can decide for ourselves. Everything, from Will’s engineering of plant life to his curing of human wounds, is done through “synthetic nanotechnology,” and that’s one of those phrases that means everything and nothing at once.

Without any care for helping the audience to understand what’s going on onscreen, Transcendencejust marches along toward the conclusion it gives you in the first five minutes of the film. There’s no surprise here; no nuance. And without any understanding of its subject matter or any interest in making others understand, either, Transcendence gives you very little reason to care.

Seven Clips from 'Transcendence' Starring Johnny Depp

Between the Terminator reboot and Wally Pfister's Transcendence, the age of the self-aware supercomputers is definitely back. With the latter sci-fi film only a couple of weeks away, seven new clips have been released. Starring Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, Kate Mara, Morgan Freeman, and Paul Bettany, the story follows a team of scientists led by Dr. Will Caster (Depp), who are trying to build the first sentient supercomputer. When anti-technology extremists attack Caster, they unwittingly force him to participate in his own transcendence.

Pfister has done some amazing work as Christopher Nolan's cinematographer, but so far Transcendence hasn't looked terribly impressive visually. We'll have wait until April 18th to see what kind of stamp he puts on his directorial debut. [Collider]

The New 'Fantastic Four' Have Been Revealed!

After months of rumors and various casting reports, Josh Trank has decided on the young cast for his reboot of the Fantastic Four. When we spoke to Miles Teller some weeks ago he sounded pretty sure that a decision would be made in just a few weeks, and not only was he right but he has indeed been set to play Reed Richard aka Mr. Fantastic. He'll be joined by Kate Mara as Sue Storm aka the Invisible Woman, Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm aka The Human Torch, and Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm aka the Thing.

Jordan was amongst the very first mentioned for film, stirring up a great deal of controversy in the process due to him being African-American. We'll see how Trank intends to handle that but the most likely scenario is that one or both of the Storms are adopted. Or they come from a merged family like The Brady Bunch, which could cause some interesting sibling tension.  Jordan, along with Teller and Mara, were high on Trank's list from the beginning and it sounds like their deals are mostly in place. Bell was a recent contender and is in "heavy talks" to finalize his deal.

The combination of Teller and Jordan have been busy, recently starring in That Awkward Moment and signing on for an upcoming heist thriller. Mara can be seen on Netflix series House of Cards and has a role in Wally Pfister's directorial debut, Transcendence. Bell will appear soon in Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac, and has some experience with motion-capture roles having starred in The Adventures of Tintin

Filming on Fantastic Four is to begin next month for release on June 19th 2015.  [TheWrap]

New Trailer for Wally Pfister's 'Transcendence' Starring Johnny Depp

Taking a break from his longtime collaborator, Christopher Nolan, first-time director Wally Pfister has nonetheless maintained the same level of secrecy. It was late last year that we had our last good look at his ambitious sci-fi film, Transcendence, and after plugging us in to a new poster yesterday, now we're receiving the latest trailer.

Starring Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, Cillian Murphy, Kate Mara, Paul Bettany, and Morgan Freeman, the Jack Paglen-scripted film centers on a Dr. Will Caster (Depp), whose dream is to create the ultimate artificial intelligence. This puts him at odds with an anti-technology faction whose violent actions make him a bigger part of the experiment than intended.

It certainly looks good, although the full trailers have yet to have the snap of the short teasers from awhile back. Transcendence opens on April 18th.

Doctor Doom May Switch Genders in 'Fantastic Four'; Kate Mara, Emmy Rossum Testing for Sue Storm

We spoke to Miles Teller a couple of weeks ago at the Sundance Film Festival where he was promoting his new film, Whiplash, and he told us that casting decisions on the Fantastic Four reboot should be coming up soon. Looks like he wasn't far off as THR reports screen testing is underway now with a few more names added to the list of contenders, plus a couple that never made the cut.

Kate Mara and Emmy Rossum are said to have read for the role of the Invisible Woman, Sue Storm, with Elizabeth Olsen and Saoirse Ronan apparently out of the picture. Mara has been rumored previously, along with Girls star Allison Williams. Miles Teller has also tested for the role of team leader, Reed Richards, and appears to be the frontrunner with Kit Harington moving on to star in Testament of Youth. Meanwhile, Christian Cook (Romeo & Juliet) is in contention to play the ever lovin' blue-eyed Thing, Ben Grimm, but there's no mention of the previously-rumored Josh Gad.

Meanwhile, THR says that Michael B. Jordan is indeed locked in to play the Human Torch, exercising the option they had on him after starring in Chronicle for Josh Trank. But the most intriguing idea the story pushes is that Doctor Doom, the expected villain of the film, may be played by a female as the studio searches for a big name to take on the part. If they thought people were upset over an African-American Johnny Storm, wait until they propose a female Doctor Doom.

More auditions are expected over the coming days. Fantastic Four is expected to open March 6th 2015.

Kate Mara and David Oyelowo are 'Captive'; Patrick Wilson Goes to 'Big Stone Gap'

* The true story of convicted serial killer Brian Nichols is being brought to the big screen, and it's got some great young talent attached to the leading roles. David Oyelowo and Kate Mara are set to star in Captive, an adapation of the best-selling book An Unlikely Angel by author Ashley Smith, who happened to be one of Nichols' hostages. Oyelowo will play Nichols who"broke out of a courthouse jail and shot dead the judge assigned to his case as well as a court reporter, sheriff’s deputy and FBI officer. While eluding a statewide manhunt, Nichols took Ashley Smith (Mara), a single mother struggling with meth addiction, hostage in her own apartment. Over the course of her ordeal, Smith used a book she had been given, Rick Warren's 'The Purpose Driven Life,' to reason with her captor, with surprising results." Directed by Jerry Jameson, filming is set to begin later this month.

* Patrick Wilson will leave the ominous world of James Wan's Insidious movies and into heartwarming family drama set in the Virginia mining country. He'll join Ashley Judd and Whoopi Goldberg (she still acts??) in Big Stone Gap, based on the series of novels by Adriana Trigiani, who is making her directorial debut. The film centers on a middle-aged woman who finds love amidst an eccentric Virginia coal town. Sounds positively lovely, and like something that should fit in nicely as part of the Hallmark Channel Hall of Fame.

Saoirse Ronan, Kate Mara, Kit Harington, and More Up for 'Fantastic Four' Roles

Up to this point, the names we've heard rumored for Josh Trank's Fantastic Four reboot have been surprising, to say the least.  Girls star Allison Williams and Fruitvale Station's Michael B. Jordan were the first two mentioned, followed shortly thereafter by The Spectacular Now's Miles Teller.  While nobody has been confirmed just yet, the list of contenders has just grown significantly.

Saorise Ronan, Kate Mara, and Margot Robbie are said to be testing for the role of Susan Storm, while Jack O'Connell and Kit Harington are joining Teller in vying for the part of Reed Richards. As of now, Jordan is still the only one in line for Johnny Storm aka The Human Torch. Whether Williams remains in the picture or not is unclear.

Ronan has been circling a number of franchises of late, recently turning town a part in The Avengers: Age of Ultron and revealing she's read for Star Wars: Episode VII. Robbie has a prime role in Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street, while Mara will be in Christopher Nolan's Transcendence. O'Connell is red hot right now after landing the lead in Angelina Jolie's Unbroken, but his schedule could keep him out of the running. Harington has been dividing his time between HBO's Game of Thrones and the big screen, and will star in Paul W.S. Anderson's Pompeii.

Whoever Fox decides to go with, we're guaranteed a very different sort of Fantastic Four than we saw before (Ioan Gruffudd for chrissakes!!!!), which is a step in the right direction. Simon Kinberg is rewriting the script now so expect some decisions to be made soon, and then we can see how it all works out on March 6th 2015. [Variety]

Trailer Time: Ironclad, starring Paul Giamatti and James Purefoy

One thing I never thought I'd get to see was the great Paul Giamatti, for my money the most consistently excellent actor in the biz, in a medieval war flick. Turns out I was wrong and I couldn't be more happy about it. Directed by Jonathan English, Ironclad sees the actor as King John in the year 1215. Furious at having been forced to sign the Magna Carta, he raises a mercenary army and begins a complete rampage across England. The only thing that stands in his way of total victory are a small group of soldiers in the last remaining castle at Rochester.

Giamatti alone is worth the price of admission, but I have a particular soft spot for anything involving knights and sieges and swordplay. James Purefoy has bored me in pretty much everything outside of HBO's Rome, but Kate Mara(who replaced Megan Fox!) and Brian Cox are usually solid even though we don't get to see much of them in this trailer.

So far the film hasn't been picked up for distribution here in the States, but let's hope that changes in the near future. Check out the brand new UK trailer below!

Two of these actresses will likely star in The Dark Knight Rises, but which two?

The gymnastics going on at some entertainment sites to try and keep up with all rumors surrounding The Dark Knight Rises is funny to watch. Not that I'm any different, but let's just say sometimes it helps to sit on any story for a little while to see how things actually shake out. When it comes to the casting of the next Batman flick, it's almost a must to just wait and see.  So take yesterday. Two big time stories about the same thing: the lead female roles in TDKR. Both wildly contradictory, with one complaining that the roles have been cast and the next story only minutes later announcing a bunch more contenders for the same parts.  Huh?

The first story came from Collider, and I honestly hope it's the one that wins out. It states that Eva Green(The Dreamers) and Naomi Watts(Fair Game) have been cast as the two primary female roles in the film. Green would be Talia Al Ghul, the daughter of Ra's Al Ghul(played by Liam Neeson in Batman Begins) who reportedly would be seeking revenge for her father's death. The Al Ghul connection has been a rumor floating around for awhile, so it makes some sense. Watts, who had been mentioned on a shortlist of possible actresses back in November, would be stepping into the high heels of sexy photojournalist, Vicki Vale. Kim Basinger played Vale back in the Tim Burton directed Batman film back in 1989. Why they insist on using her character is beyond me.

But here comes the fun contradiction, as THR produced a whole new list of contenders for the very same roles Collider said have already been filled. What they've got includes some names we've already heard before, such as Keira Knightley and Anne Hathaway, but also includes Jessica Biel, Gemma Arterton, Charlotte Riley(who co-starred with Biel in Easy Virtue), and Kate Mara(Transsiberian).

With principle photography set to begin in May, you can bet we'll know who's correct soon enough. I think it's best to assume that both stories have some things right and some things wrong, with perhaps Green and Watts not being as locked down for the parts so much as in discussions. I'd love to see Anne Hathaway involved somehow, but if it's between her and Watts I'll take the Mulholland Drive star every single time.
