Joel Kinnaman offered the 'Robocop' remake lead

The timing couldn't be more perfect, as word is really starting to build around Joel Kinnaman after the release of the Snabba Cash II trailer, the sequel to the hit Swedish thriller that proved to be his breakout. The success of that film led him to be one of last year's fastest rising stars, with his name attached to numerous potential Hollywood franchises, although most of those never came to pass. Now he finds himself in the running for another major tentpole in MGM's upcoming reboot of Robocop.

Deadline reports that MGM has made an offer to Kinnaman to take on the title role in the film, to be directed by Brazilian filmmaker, Jose Padilha(Elite Squad).  We all know the Robocop story, don't we? Cop gets killed, his body becomes part of a special program...yadda yadda yadda...you got yourself a cyborg super pig. Peter Weller made the role iconic with the 1987 original and the (awful) 1990 sequel.

For Kinnaman, this could finally be the big time project he's been groomed for over the past year. He snagged a small role as Christer Malm in David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, a part that will only expand if the trilogy plays out. He was one of many named as a candidate for Steven Soderbergh's The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and was set to star in Arthur & Lancelot for David Dobkin before both of those movies crashed over bloated budgets.  Expect Kinnaman to jump all over this one, giving the Robocop relaunch quite the international flavor.
