Emily Blunt and Ruth Wilson vying for Ms. Marvel role in 'The Avengers' sequel?

Marvel has been trying to get their hooks into Emily Blunt for awhile now, once having the actress pegged for the Black Widow role that ultimately went to Scarlett Johansson. With Joss Whedon the king of crafting strong female characters, along with the promise of at least a couple of new heroes assembling for The Avengers sequel, it makes sense that he'd would aim high if they're looking to cast for one of the most powerful lady characters in the entire Marvel Universe: Carol "Ms. Marvel" Danvers.

A rumor surfacing in the UK's Daily Mail has Blunt along with Anna Karenina's Ruth Wilson in the running to play Ms. Marvel in the sequel to this summer's $1B+ grossing hit....

"British actresses Emily Blunt and Ruth Wilson are head-to-head in a race for the most sought-after new female role in Hollywood. Emily, star of The  Young Victoria, and Ruth, from TV’s Luther, are both hotly tipped to play superhero Ms Marvel in Avengers 2, the sequel to Avengers Assemble."

Now this should be taken with a serious helping of salt until we get some sort of official confirmation, but right off the bat neither seems like a perfect match for the role. Carol Danvers is a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot who gains her powers after the explosion of an alien Kree device, which caused her DNA to be fused with that of the superhero, Captain Marvel. She would undergo a number of physical and personality changes over the years. She saw her physical and emotional state altered numerous times by the X-man Rogue, the alien Brood, and would even serve as a herald of the planet-devouring Galactus. Danvers would also go on to lead The Avengers at one point, becoming one of its most stable and trusted members.

There was some talk that Ms. Marvel would turn up in the first film, with Yvonne Strahovski(Chuck) rumored for the role. It turned out to not be true, obviously, but many have long suspected she'd make it into the sequel in some capacity. Blunt doesn't strike me as a franchise actress, but I would have said the same about Johansson and Rebecca Hall, who just joined Iron Man 3. There's no doubt she'd find a way to be great in the role. Wilson already has one tentpole flick under her belt, as she just finished wrapping The Lone Ranger with Johnny Depp.

So what do you think? The Avengers 2 is set to open on May 1st 2015.
