Punch Drunk DVD's

Dark Shadows: A re-imagining (see: changing everything but keeping the theme) of the late 60's supernatural soap opera, this Tim Burton/Johnny Depp collaboration almost made people lose faith in what the Depp-Burton connection could do. While I'm sure it's much less offending on a home video viewing than the $10 a ticket theater trip I still can't recommend this as any more than a Friday night distraction rental.

People Like Us: Chris Pine takes his shot at a non-Capt. Kirk starring role in the comedy/drama (always so weird when those are grouped together), People Like Us. Completely forgettable but not horrible this movie is definitely not a buy but is completely worth a rental. While Pine is going to have to work alot harder to become a go-to name in movies of this kind, People Like Us, is totally watchable and won't completely disappoint for the promises it makes.

Red Lights: I really hate it when Travis makes me eat some humble pie but that was exactly the case this past sunday on PDC Live!!! when we were discussing this movie and the quality of today's straight to DVD releases. Boasting a cast with Robert DeNiro, Cillian Murphy and Sigourney Weaver this supernatural mystery is sure to be a surprise delight to those who give it a chance.

Cinderella: For those unfamiliar with the Disney vault this may seem like an insignificant release. Let me catch you up to speed. Next time you go to Best Buy look for the Disney classics you hold dear in the DVD section...odds are you won't find most of them. Disney locks up their films only to be sold at certain times. Cinderella being one of the, if not the most popular of all the Disney princesses now is the time to buy this film immediately, especially when you consider the fact that this may well be the last time this movie is available on a physical medium. The re-release is a special edition and totally worth the 25 bucks.

Universal Monster's Collection: Universal Studios created the monster movie...well maybe not created, but they definitely shaped what we know as the modern monster movie. This collection which includes the classic films, Dracula, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Phantom of the Opera, The Wolfman, and many more is a steal at just over $100. This is one of those collections that you need to have on your DVD wall for posterity if nothing else.
