Sure Shots: Jake Gyllenhaal; Julia Stiles; Jon Favreau

* Dan Gilroy, who recently co-wrote The Bourne Legacy with his brother Tony, has landed Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo for his directorial debut, Nightcrawler. Sorry, it's not an X-men spinoff about the blue German teleporter. The film centers on a "driven young man who discovers the nocturnal world of L.A. freelance crime journalism." Sounds like another edgy, seat-of-your-pants drama for Gyllenhaal, similar to his recent films An Enemy and Prisoners. [Variety]

* Julia Stiles is currently earning solid reviews for her dark comedy It's a Disaster, so she's venturing into even bleaker waters for her next film. She'll join Scott Speedman (The Strangers) and Stephen Rea in the supernatural thriller, Out of the Dark. Directed by Lluis Quilez, the story follows an American family who move to Colombia to take over the business of the wife's father, only to realize their new home may be haunted. Sounds like standard horror stuff, but Stiles is notoriously choosy so there may be more to it than the logline indicates.

* Jon Favreau may have gotten his start as an indie filmmaker back in the days of Swingers and Made, but obviously he grew into a go-to guy for blockbusters by directing the first two Iron Man films. Now he's venturing back to the small-budget world by writing, directing, and starring in Chef, an indie comedy about an emotional chef who runs a Los Angeles restaurant. Financing is still coming together on this one, so we'll just have to wait and see how it develops. Favreau will be seen next as Happy Hogan in Iron Man 3.  [Variety]
