Uncover the mystery in the new trailer for 'The East'

Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij's The East was one of the few films that premiered at Sundance already with a distribution deal in place, and there's a pretty good reason why. Unlike the usual festival fare, and that includes Marling's previous films Another Earth and the hypnotic Sound of My Voice, The East is an espionage thriller at heart, with flashes of nicely staged action that are shown off in the newly-released trailer.

Marling stars as an investigator for a private firm who goes undercover in a left-wing anarchist group known for targeting corporations guilty of endangering the environment and the people. Alexander Skarsgard, Ellen Page, and Toby Kebbell lead the activist collective, while Marling's character begins to lose her perspective the deeper she gets involved.  It's another fascinating look at fringe culture, and makes for a "pulsing and exciting eco-thriller" as noted in my review.

Co-starring Patricia Clarkson, Shiloh Fernandez, and Julia Ormond, The East takes control on May 31st. Look out for my interview with Marling, Batmanglij, and Page in a future episode of Cinema Royale
