Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig, and Tobey Maguire to star in TV mini-series 'The Spoils of Babylon'
The last time Will Ferrell took on the world of soap operas he gave us the Spanish-language comedy spoof, Casa de mi Padre. I found it to be one of the funniest, craziest, and in some ways bravest, films he's ever done, but audiences largely ignored it. But Ferrell's going to the well one more time, only this time it'll be American soaps he skewers, and it'll be on the small screen.
Ferrell, Tobey Maguire, and Kristen Wiig are set to lead the IFC mini-series, The Spoils of Babylon, which is basically a riff on prime-time soaps The Thorn Birds and The Winds of War. Directed by Casa de mi Padre's Matt Piedmont and produced by Funny or Die, the six-part series follows the oil-rich Morehouse family, with Maguire as the adopted orphan Devon Morehouse, who along with his step-sister Cynthia (Wiig), goes on to run the company, one of the largest in the world. Fighting their feelings for one another, they get involved in international espionage and illegal arms deals with the Shah of Iran, who naturally would be played by Ferrell.
Piedmont co-wrote the script with SNL's Andrew Steele, and it'll be great to see Maguire show off his funnybone opposite a pair of comedic heavyweights. No word on when production will begin, but hopefully it will be soon.[Deadline]
