Lizzy Caplan Eyes 'Now You See Me 2'; Alexis Knapp and Bar Paly get the 'Urge'

There will always be a hole in my heart where the awesome-but-canceled Party Down used to be, but one good thing to come out of it has been more Lizzy Caplan on the big and small screen. She's great on Showtime's Masters of Sex and has a role in The Interview opposite James Franco and Seth Rogen. Now she's may be conjuring up a part in Now You See Me 2, although the deal isn't finalized just yet. Her schedule on Master of Sex will have to be worked out before she can join Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Mark Ruffalo, and Danielle Radcliffe in the heist sequel, directed by Jon M. Chu. [TheWrap]

Pitch Perfect's leggy Alexis Knapp and Michal Bay favorite Bar Paly (Pain & Gain) will get the Urge alongside Pierce Brosnan and Ashley Greene. Aaron Kaufman is directing the thriller about a group of friends on an island vacation who take part in an experimental drug experiment that lowers their inhibitions, forcing them to give in to their wildest urges.

Nicolas Cage is 'The Runner'; Djimon Hounsou and Alexis Knapp are 'One'

* If one wants to find out what Nicolas Cage will be doing for the next two years, just wait for Cannes to roll around. That's when he piles up his slate with a ton of projects, and he's just added another. He'll star in The Runner as an idealistic New Orleans congressman who becomes embroiled in a sex scandal in the wake of the 2010 BP oil spill. Austin Stark will be making his directorial debut on this one, with production to begin next month.

* Djimon Hounsou and Alexis Knapp will star in One, a post-apocalyptic thriller that sounds like The Stand meets Divergent. Written and directed by Australian filmmaker Murali Thalluri, the story is set in a world after a virus has wiped out 99% of humanity, leaving those who have survived divided into racial groups all fighting for a cure. Knapp will play a captured woman who is mysteriously immune to the virus. [Variety]

Alexis Knapp Enters 'The Dorm'; Nick Cannon Back for 'Drumline 2'; Jay Baruchel Joins 'The Ten O'Clock People'

* The leggy Alexis Knapp (Pitch Perfect) has signed on to star in MTV's upcoming horror film, The Dorm. She'll play Vivian, a shy, awkward college freshman who undergoes a total transformation into a sexy seductress thanks to her dorm mate. Cassie Steele (Degrassi) and Max Lloyd Jones (MTV's Teen Wolf) co-star. Rachel Talaly, best known for Tank Girl and Freddy's Dead, is directing with a script by Sean Hood (Halloween: Resurrection), so there's plenty of horror pedigree here. Could this be MTV's new Scream-esque franchise? [Deadline]

* Considering 2002's Drumline was a modest box office success and generally well-received amongst the African-American community, it was surprising to not hear much talk of a sequel. But now twelve years later we're finally getting one thanks to VH1, who are developing it as a TV sequel. Nick Cannon will return to co-star and produce Drumline: A New Beat which will center on an upper class Brooklyn girl who heads to a Louisiana university to revitalize their once-prominent drumline. A lead actress still needs to be found before production begins this spring for a premiere in the fall.

* Jay Baruchel may have been the least recognizable face in This is the End (a running gag in the film, actually), but he's also one of the busiest. Next week he'll be seen in the Robocop remake, and now he's just agreed to lead Stephen King adaptation, The Ten O'Clock People. Justin Long had been eyed for the horror some time back with Rachel Nichols co-starring, and when Long dropped out Chris Evans circled it for a time. Now all are gone and Baruchel is on board to star and produce, with Tom Holland (Child's Play) directing and penning the script about a smoker attempting to kick the habit and uncovers a frightening aspect of reality in the process. Skylar Astin and Camilla Belle Look for Love in New 'Cavemen' Trailer

What happens when the worlds of Pitch Perfect and the Footloose remake collide? Nothing remotely musical, apparently. Instead you get Cavemen, a romantic comedy starring Skylar Astin, Alexis Knapp, Kenny Wormald, Chad Michael Murray, Camilla Belle, and Dayo Okeniyi. Put these folks in anything else and you might have the makings of a something hot, but this trailer promises nothing but weak sauce.  Los Angeles 20-somethings are searching for love in all the wrong places, but it's Astin taking the lead as Dean, who wants to move on from one night stands and find something more. Belle plays his best friend and they share a physical attraction but you'll be shocked to learn neither is willing to make the first move. It's like they rolled this movie off an assembly line.

Written and directed by Herschel Faber, Cavemen opens February 7th. Lots of talent here, so maybe it'll be better than it appears.

Review: 'Pitch Perfect' starring Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson

Essentially an episode of Glee(if it were any good) mixed with Bring It On, Pitch Perfect is exactly what the doctor ordered for those who can't get enough of Nelly and Bruno Mars mash-ups.The film's peppy, upbeat scale is carried by Anna Kendrick, who perhaps faster than any other has become an actress we implicitly trust and immediately cheer for. Here she gets to show off not only her comedic chops but also her impressive vocal range for the first time since she busted out 'Ladies Who Lunch' in Todd Graff's Camp.

Kendrick slips into the unfamiliar role of rebellious college student Beca, who turns up at Barden University with a chip on her shoulder. Her father's a professor and his status grants her a free ride, but Beca's goal is to skip town and hit L.A. for a shot at hitting the big time as a DJ. Pressed into getting out there and experiencing the college life, she initially insults Aubrey(Anna Camp), the domineering but desperate leader of The Barden Bellas, an all-girl a capella group on a recruitment drive. Having projectile vomited their way into an embarrassing loss at the championships, Aubrey and her feisty right hand gal Chloe(a flame-haired Brittany Snow) are having a hard time finding new members. An awkward meeting reveals Beca's vocal chops, and she becomes the first of of a fresh group of peculiar recruits each with their own funny little quirks.

Easily the best of the bunch is Rebel Wilson as the rambunctious and self-deprecating Fat Amy, who quickly spots in Beca a fellow outsider stuck in a world of Barbie dolls. The entire squad is attractive, hilarious, and occasionally disturbing in all of the best ways. Stacie(Alexis Knapp) is the team slut who can barely go five minutes without reminding everyone how active she is. Lilly sings and speaks with all the power of a church mouse, and with her dead-eyed stare the horrific things she says are all the more distressing, but funny for being so random. The girls put aside their numerous differences for a little girl power unity, cranking out energetic, suburban versions of Salt 'n Pepa's 'Let's Talk About Sex', Ace of Base's 'The Sign', and many more. It can get a little tiresome after awhile, and soon all of the songs start to blend together. Fortunately the cast is so good that it doesn't really matter.

Stealing a page from Christopher Guest's wonderful, satirical explorations of niche genres, Kay Cannon's script is both reverential and dismissive of the dork singing culture. Elizabeth Banks(also a producer) and John Michael Higgins(a Guest favorite) scathingly rip a capella to shreds as commentators for some fictional broadcast. It's like they've taken all the best elements from Guest's terrific Best of Show, only with less dogs and a more lively pace set by debuting director Jason Moore.

Of course love has to be in the air at some point, and Beca dances around a relationship with Jesse(Skyler Astin) a nice guy newbie member of the champion all-boy team The Treblemakers. The feud between the guys 'n gals is so thick that any Bella who dates a "Treble" is immediately kicked off the squad. A few moments of light tension arise, especially when Beca begins to fall for Jesse's plot to win her over through the power of The Breakfast Club's soundtrack. Can't really fault him there. The Trebles are led by a loud-mouthed but talented blowhard named Bumper(Adam DeVine) who delights in humiliating the girls whenever possible, especially Fat Amy. His obnoxious antics, along with those of his crew, keep much of the film from becoming repetitive.

Pitch Perfect isn't especially deep, but for a year that has seen numerous musicals covering much of the same material, it's certainly the best of the bunch and a fun film that hits most of the right high notes.
