Gabriel Basso Finds 'The Whole Truth'; Juno Temple Joins 'Black Mass'; 'Southpaw' Adds Forest Whitaker

* The Kings of Summer's Gabriel Basso has taken a lead role in The Whole Truth, a courtroom drama starring Daniel Craig, Renee Zellwegger, and possibly Lupita Nyong'o. Courtney Hunt is directing the Nicholas Kazan script about a defense attorney trying to get his teenaged client (Basso) acquitted of murdering his wealthy father. [Deadline]

* Juno Temple and rising star Jesse Plemons (The Master) have joined Johnny Depp in Black Mass, the Whitey Bulger biopic directed by Scott Cooper. Depp plays the infamous Boston gangster who, with the help of a childhood friend and federal agent played by Joel Edgerton, escaped the feds and went on the run for 16 years, ranking at the top of the FBI's Most Wanted List. Temple will play a prostitute while Plemons is on board as a member of Bulger's inner circle.

* Now that Antoine Fuqua and Jake Gyllenhaal have finally got the boxing drama Southpaw headed to the ring, it's time to fill out the supporting cast. Lacing up the gloves will be Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker, playing Titus "Tick" Willis, a former pro forced to retire after losing an eye, and quit training fighters after his son was killed. Gyllenhaal stars as a left-handed boxer who wins the title early, but suffers a tragedy and loses everything. Now he must fight to regain what was lost, including the love of his daughter.

Michelle Monaghan Finds 'The Best of Me'; Catalina Sandino Moreno is 'Incarnate'; Gabriel Basso Joins 'Barely Lethal'

* You'll be shocked, shocked I tell you, to know that another Nicholas Sparks adaptation is on the way. Actually we learned about The Best of Me a few months ago, and now it has Michelle Monaghan as its leading lady. Directed by Michael Hoffman (The Last Station), the film centers on two former lovers "from opposite sides of the tracks" who rekindle their relationship years later when a friend's funeral brings them back together. What's the saying? "We accept the love we think we deserve"? Well, the same goes for acting roles. Monaghan deserves better than this. [THR]

* Rosario Dawson has dropped out of Incarnate, the indie horror starring Aaron Eckhart as an unconventional exorcist who meets his match in a demon-possessed little boy. In to replace her is another extremely talented actress, Catalina Sandino Moreno, who is probably best known for her Oscar-nominated performance in Maria Full of Grace. Filming is set to begin next month with Brad Peyton directing. [THR]

* The Kings of Summer continues to be a great launching pad for its three principle stars. Moises Arias has a key role in Ender's Game; Nick Robinson recently joined Jurassic World; and now Gabriel Basso has signed on to the action comedy, Barely Lethal. He'll play the wild best friend to Hailee Steinfeld, a teen assassin who fakes her own death and tries to attend a normal high school. Samuel L. Jackson, Jessica Alba, and Sophie Turner co-star in the Kyle Newman-directed film. [TheWrap]

Two new clips from 'The Kings of Summer'

By now it should be obvious that I'm a big fan of Jordan Vogt-Roberts' Sundance hit, The Kings of Summer. We've been championing it for awhile as a fresh take on the coming-of-age genre, full of wonderfully real performances, tons of big laughs, and an attention to detail that most comedies don't bother with anymore.

While the heart and soul of the film are the terrific performances by young leads Nick Robinson, Gabriel Basso, and Moises Arias, the veteran supporting players are just as effective. Two new clips have emerged that showcase the talents of husband/wife duo Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally. In one, Mullally plays the awkwardly overbearing mother to Basso's character, who gets fed up at the constant teasing and set out to live in the woods with his buddies. The other clip features Offerman haggling with the Chinese food delivery guy over the size of his won ton soup. While it may seem a little ridiculous, it provides a bit of insight into why his son chose to run away rather than live under his roof.

If you're living in the Washington DC area and want to attend an advance screening, simply go here, follow the simple instructions and we will hook you up. Also, be sure to stay tuned for my interview with Vogt-Roberts, which will be airing on Cinema Royale in the next few days. The Kings of Summer opens in limited release on May 31st, everywhere else on June 7th.
