War Erupts in New Clips from 'The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies'

In case the hashtag #OneLastTime on all of the promos didn't tip you off, Peter Jackson's second epic trilogy set in Middle Earth is coming to a close. Last night the world premiere of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies was held in London, and to coincide with the event two new clips have been released. In keeping with the title, these are all about the massive war that erupts after the defeat of Smaug, when Thorin and his dwarf colleagues must defend their reclaimed homeland from an army of Orcs sent by Sauron.

Here's hoping the third and final movie is nothing but all-out action because there's really nothing else left for them to do. There's nowhere else to walk to. Check out the two clips followed by the full synopsis below. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies opens December 17th.

“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves. Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Enraged, Smaug rains his fiery wrath down upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town. Obsessed above all else with his reclaimed treasure, Thorin sacrifices friendship and honor to hoard it as Bilbo’s frantic attempts to make him see reason drive the Hobbit towards a desperate and dangerous choice. But there are even greater dangers ahead. Unseen by any but the Wizard Gandalf, the great enemy Sauron has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain. As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide – unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends in the epic Battle of the Five Armies, as the future of Middle-earth hangs in the balance.

Check Out Six Minutes of 'The Raid 2: Berendal' Brutality

While many of my critic colleagues are beginning to cobble together their "Best of" lists full of heavy dramas and biopics, a guaranteed slot in my Top 3 has been reserved for the best fighting flick of the last decade. Gareth Evans' The Raid 2: Berendal has been sitting high on my personal chart since it floored me at Sundance, and unlike some others the extended runtime (150 minutes!) and expanded back story made me love it more. But I also recognize that the fighting is the best part, in fact it's downright unreal, and now you can see six minutes of the sheer cinematic brutality for yourself in this awesome super cut.

So the ramped-up club music is fuss but it's more than worth it for the car chase fight and Baseball Bat Guy alone, although you get a Hell of a lot more. Check it out.

Two Clips from Russell Crowe's Directorial Debut, 'The Water Diviner'

Russell Crowe has been dabbling in filmmaking for awhile, but next month his native Australia will have a chance to check out his directorial debut, The Water Diviner. The rest of us will have to wait until next year to see if Crowe can make a similar leap as fellow A-lister Angelina Jolie, or if he should stay in front of the camera.

The first two clips from The Water Diviner have been released, which has Crowe pulling double duty as the star. Set in 1919 after the Battle of Gallipoli, Crowe plays a father who travels to Turkey to locate his missing sons, declared missing in action. The first clip mostly centers on a mustachioed Jai Courtney as a soldier aiding in the search, while the second clip shows a daring rescue from a terrible dust storm.

Also starring Olga Kurylenko, The Water Diviner opens April 24th 2015.

It's time to go on Interstellar lockdown. With early reviews of Christopher Nolan's science-heavy film already out and screenings taking place tonight ahead of Wednesday's IMAX release, you won't find me looking at these two newly-released clips. But maybe you're still interested in finding out as much as possible, so check 'em out below.

Here's the official synopsis: With our time on Earth coming to an end, a team of explorers undertakes the most important mission in human history; traveling beyond this galaxy to discover whether mankind has a future among the stars.

Starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Casey Affleck, Michael Caine, David Oyelowo, Wes Bently, John Lithgow, Ellen Burstyn, Topher Grace, David Gyasi, Mackenzie Foy, Bill Irwin, Timothee Chalamet, and Matt Damon, Interstellar opens in IMAX on November 5th before going wide two days later.

Five Clips from Alejando Gonzalez Inarritu's 'Birdman' with Michael Keaton

This far into awards season we're still staring to get a lay of the land, so to speak. While some films are emerging as obvious contenders and others maybe not living up to the hype (lookin' at you, St. Vincent), one that has been universally praised and seems like a lock for a Best Picture and Best Actor nomination is Birdman, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's meta comedy starring Michael Keaton.

Here are five clips from the film which has Keaton in a familiar role, that of a down 'n out actor most famous for playing a superhero early in his career and is now trying to mount a comeback. For the former Batman it's the kind of role he was obviously perfectly suited for, and Inarritu knew it almost immediately. He told the New York Times recently....

“When I finished the script, I knew that Michael was not the choice or option, he was the guy. He’s one of the few guys in the world who has worn that cape. The authority and the relatability that he gave, all those were essential.”

It isn't just Keaton who is showered by praise, though, as the technical wizardry of Gravity cinematographer Emmanuelle Lubezki is also turning heads. Using a variety of techniques he's managed to make Birdman look like one continuous shot from start to finish. Wow.  Looking forward to this one big time, and fortunately our screening is tonight so I won't have to wait long.

Starring Emma Stone, Zach Galifianakis, and Edward Norton, Birdman is in theaters now in some cities but opens in DC on Oct. 24th.

Hilarious Red Band Trailer, Clips, and Promos for 'Dear White People'

Let's be honest, racism is never going away, and there's nothing funny about some of the racially-charged stories that have been in the news lately. But there is plenty of humor to be found in the way people stereotype others and pretend racism doesn't exist in the Obama era. Basically, Justin Simien's debut feature Dear White People tears apart the myth of post-racial America and does it in hilarious and perceptive fashion, as seen in this new red band trailer.

Starring Tyler James Williams, Tessa Thompson, Teyonah Parris, Brandon P. Bell, Kyle Gallner, Dennis Haysbert and more, the film centers on the uproar caused at a predominantly white university over two things: a controversial radio program titled 'Dear White People', and a campus "hip-hop" party featuring some incredibly offensive black stereotypes. It's a film I enjoyed at Sundance, although perhaps not as much as some others. One thing for sure is that Dear White People is going to turn some heads when it opens on October 17th. Check out the trailer and a clip below, followed by some hilarious promos done in the style of those cheesy "The More You Know" promos NBC used to run during commercial breaks.

'The Equalizer' goes Brick by Brick in New Clips

Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua's The Equalizer is making its debut at TIFF, an unusual move for a major studio picture expected to be a big hit. But it speaks to the confidence Sony has by putting it in front of the most discerning eyes, and now they've released a couple of new clips from the movie's quieter moments.

Co-starring Chloe Moretz and Marton Csokas, the remake of the 1980s TV series has Denzel as a former Black Ops agent who gave it all up and now works as a protector of the innocent. And his way of protecting them means excessive amounts of stylized violence, earning the film an R-rating. These two scenes show him trying to intimidate the film's villain (Csokas), and convincing a young prostitute (Moretz) there is a better life out there than the one she's in now.

The Equalizer opens September 19th, and if it does well a sequel is already in the works.

Two Clips from Lone Schefig's 'The Riot Club' with Sam Claflin, Max Irons, and Natalie Dormer

2009's great coming-of-age drama An Education not only introduced us to the supremely talented Cary Mulligan, it also put Dutch director Lone Scherfig on the map for a lot of people. It's been a little bit of a wait for her follow-up, The Riot Club, but it's another look at British high society and priviledge with a cast that's full of potential.

Sam Claflin, Max Irons, Natalie Dormer, Holliday Grainger (Bonnie & Clyde), Douglas Booth, Jessica Brown Findlay, Sam Reid (Belle), Olly Alexander (God Help the Girl), and Tom Hollander star in the film which screenwriter Laura Wade based on her popular stageplay. She drew inspiration from the real-life Bullingdon Club, Oxford University's most exclusive society that has produced some of the most powerful and prestigious figures in the U.K. The Riot Club premiered this weekend at TIFF, and since we all can't be there these two clips will have to suffice in showing what happens when rich, spoiled brats all get together in one place.

The Riot Club opens in the U.K. on September 19th but nothing for the U.S. yet.

Five Clips from 'The Drop' Starring Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, and James Gandolfini

While last year's dramedy Enough Said was a beautiful change of pace for the late James Gandolfini, showcasing a sensitive side we rarely had a chance to see on screen, his final performance is what we're more accustomed to. The last movie he completed was The Drop (formerly Animal Rescue), a crime flick that has all the pieces to be one of the fall's sleeper hits. Directed by Michael Roskam (the Oscar-nominated film Bullhead) and starring Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, Matthias Schoenaerts (Rust & Bone), and Ann Dowd (The Leftovers), the film is based on a story by Mystic River author, Dennis Lehane. So the pedigree is there, and now five clips have arrived to show why people are so excited.

Hardy stars as bartender Bob Saginowsk as he tries to keep clean while working at a bar that serves as a "money drop" for Brooklyn's criminal underworld. Gandolfini plays his heavy-handed boss and cousin Marv, with Rapace as Nadia, a woman with secrets of her own as evidenced in one of the new clips. Each scene is a conversation that shows just how out-of-control things have become for Bob as he deals with a robbery gone awry. In one, Marv describes Bob's wasted life, while in another his beloved pitbull (hence the old Animal Rescue title) is held up for ransom.

The Drop opens September 12th.

Two Clips from Ramin Bahrani's '99 Homes' Starring Andrew Garfield and Michael Shannon

Ramin Bahrani's obsession with the plight of the common man has been felt mightily in his first four features, Man Push Cart, Chop Shop, Goodbye Solo, and last year's compelling if flawed At Any Price. That was his biggest film to date, with Zac Efron and Dennis Quaid starring in the heartland-set drama about farm workers. Bahrani's latest, 99 Homes, follows a similar tract as his prior movies and explores the disreputable acts that ruined lives during the housing crisis.

Andrew Garfield, Michael Shannon, and Laura Dern head up a small but strong cast for 99 Homes, and two clips have arrived to show how Bahrani plans to tackle an issue that is still plaguing America today. Garfield, taking a much-needed break from Spider-Man for awhile, plays Dennis Nash, the head of a family evicted from their home by Mike Carver (Shannon), a charismatic, unscrupulous real estate agent. When Carver offers Nash a ton of money and his home back to work for him, Nash is forced to do to other home owners what was done to him.

99 Homes recently had its premiere at the Venice Film Festival where it is competing for the prestigious Golden Lion award.

Two Clips from One of Robin Williams' Final Performances in 'Merry Friggin' Christmas'

It has only been a few days since the shocking news of Robin Williams' death and understandably the world is still in mourning. Hollywood doesn't stand still for long, though, and unfortunately his passing will be used to promote the four movies he had already completed. Shameful yes, but it's to be expected. The first of those to hit theaters is Merry Friggin' Christmas, and if you guess it was another of those "edgy" holiday comedies then you get a lump of coal in the stocking.

Directed by TV helmer Tristram Shapeero (New Girl, Bored to Death), the film stars Joel McHale as Boyd, with Williams as his quirky estranged father. When Boyd is forced to bring his wife (Lauren Graham, who starred in Bad Santa) and son to spend the holidays with his estranged family, it goes as bad as he expected. But things get worse when Boyd realizes he left his son's gifts at home and he's forced to hit the road with his father to pick them up before sunrise.

Honestly, this movie didn't have a lot of buzz before Williams' passing and these two newly-released clips probably wouldn't have changed that. But these are just small bits of footage focused on Williams and, at least in the scene with his character's grandson it's a poignant reminder of how he could dial that energy back when called up. With Phil Johnston (Wreck-It-Ralph, Cedar Rapids) having written the screenplay there could be more here than these clips suggests.

Starring Wendi McLendon Covey-, Clark Duke, Candice Bergen, Jeffrey Tambor, and Oliver Platt, Merry Friggin' Christmas opens November 7th.

Five Clips from 'The Giver' with Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, and Taylor Swift

Lois Lowry's The Giver predates many of the currently popular YA novels, so there's been some attempt to separate it from the genre. The problem is, every single trailer and piece of footage makes it look exactly like the others, which is probably what The Weinstein Company wanted to begin with. Like it or not, these movies make a lot of money and those that tried to be different (I'll put Beautiful Creatures as one of those) haven't been met with a lot of success. With the film arriving in theaters this week, five new clips from the film have been released and one of them gives us a look at Taylor Swift in a small role.

The cast for this one is certainly impressive with Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges providing a veteran presence to Philip Noyce's film set in a society free of emotions and thus free of violence. In this supposedly utopian society one man, known as the giver, is gifted with the good and bad memories of the past. Brenton Thwaites plays Jonas, a young man who is the new Receiver of Memories, and upon learning how things used to be he decides that emotion needs to be restored. Of course there are those who would fight against him in order to keep the status quo. So basically this sounds almost exactly like Divergent, and with the requisite amount of teen romance in the midst of a societal breakdown it's just like every other YA story on the market. Katie Holmes and Odeya Rush co-star, and Taylor Swift makes a brief appearance as Rosemary, a key figure from the Giver's past.

Our own +Mae Abdulbaki swears by these books but I'm less than convinced. The Giver opens on August 15th, look for our review tomorrow.

Michael Fassbender is 'Frank' on The Colbert Report, Plus Two New Clips

By now you're probably sick and tired of my praise of the movie Frank. It's a really special film, one that I instantly fell in love with and scrambled to catch a second time at Sundance. One reason was the weird, poignant performance by Michael Fassbender, done almost entirely under a giant paper mache head. The other is the bizarre yet catchy music (performed by the actual cast), with the hit single "I Love You All" buzzing in my brain for the last eight months.

Fassbender, in an effort to show he's more than just a pretty face and remarkable acting ability, took to The Colbert Report as Frank and performed live "I Love You All" with much of the film's cast Maggie Gyllenhaal, Domhnall Gleeson, Carla Azar, and Francois Civil. It's pretty nuts, but fitting for a film I called "chaotic, unpredictable, and utterly lovable."

Check out the video below, and then take a look at a couple of new clips that will give you a good idea of the movie's offbeat tone. In one scene, Gleeson's character meets Frank for the first time and inquires about McNairy's mental state when really everybody in the band is a little crazy. And in the other we see what happens when Frank tries to make "the most likeable song ever".

Frank hits theaters on August 15th, and go here when you realize "I Love You All" needs to be in your playlist.

Trailer, Poster, and Clips from Rom-Com 'Two Night Stand' Starring Miles Teller and Analeigh Tipton

Check out the charming but forgettable rom-com What If this weekend and what you'll find is the familiar story of two best friends who are clearly soul mates except one is too blind to notice. It's been done to death, but right alongside it is the oft-told story of two people who try to build a relationship from a one night stand and the obvious problems that causes. We saw that particular tale recently in the remake of About Last Night, now we're getting it one more time with Two Night Stand, which has just released an unimpressive trailer.

Analeigh Tipton (Crazy Stupid Love, Warm Bodies) plays a young woman whose life is in disarray. Her roommates (Jessica Szohr, Kid Cudi) want her to move out, and she's still struggling with a major break-up. So to get things back on track she decides to have a one night stand with Alec (Miles Teller, The Spectacular Now), but when it's time for the "walk of shame" she can't leave because of an epic snowstorm. Stuck in an incredibly awkward situation they decide to be honest with one another, for better or for worse.

These do not look like characters I'd want to be stuck anywhere with, much less watch a movie about, and that's sad because Tipton and Teller are usually worth paying money to see. Directed by Max Nichols, Two Night Stand opens September 20th. Check out the trailer below plus a bunch of clips.

Insane Posters, Trailer, and Clips from 'The Purge: Anarchy'

Lock your doors and set the security system because the annual Purge is about to begin! In just a few weeks The Purge: Anarchy will storm theaters, hoping to capitalize on last year's hit The Purge, which turned out to be another low-budget smash for Blumhouse, earning about $90M at the cost of practically nothing. Will the sequel prove just as crazy and ballsy as the first film? A handful of new clips, a trailer, and some insane new posters suggest it will be even crazier.

Ditching the home invasion style and going as a straight-up revenge flick, The Purge: Anarchy is led by perennial tough guy Frank Grillo as a man who uses the evening of legal violence to exact vengeance. His plans are derailed when he encounters a group of people in desperate need of help getting off the streets in one piece. Kiele Sanchez, Zach Gilford, Keith Stanfield, Carmen Ejogo, and Michael K. Williams co-star. Shocktilyoudrop have provided the nearly 3 1/2-minute NSFW footage that features Grillo going up against a dude nicknamed "Big Daddy", probably because of his massive chaingun.

The Purge: Anarchy occurs on July 18th.

Eyes are Windows to the Soul in New Clips and Images from 'I Origins'

It's not often you come across a film that can take an objective look at faith through the lens of science, but Mike Cahill's I Origins is one that does. But it's so much more than that as it combines mystery, romance, and crime thriller elements into a package that won the Alfred P. Sloan Award at Sundance and earned rave reviews, including a glowing one from yours truly. When the film opens later this month it instantly becomes the most unique entry in the sci-fi genre in quite some time, and now you can get a taste of it in a couple of clips and some new images.

Michael Pitt leads the film as a scientist specializing in the human eye, until he meets a beautiful young woman (Astrid Berges-Frisbey) who has eyes unlike anything he's ever seen. His love affair with her evolves into something quite unexpected and far-reaching. Brit Marling, who teamed with Cahill on Another Earth a few years ago, plays Pitt's lab partner and to say more would give away a story that goes in some surprising directions.

Also starring The Walking Dead's Steven Yeun, Cara Seymour, and Archie Panjabi, I Origins opens July 18th.

Mark Wahlberg Discovers an Autobot in Two 'Transformers: Age of Extinction' Clips

While many will be coming to Transformers: Age of Extinction to watch their favorite childhood toys thrashing one another on the big screen, Michael Bay always centers these movies around the humans. And let's be honest, if he didn't we'd be complaining about the lack of human perspective, even if the storylines these people are involved in are ultimately pointless. Quick what do you rememember about Sam Witwicky's parents? Probably nothing, and they were in all of the prior movies for some unknown reason. Thankfully they, nor Sam, will be seen again in favor of a new trio of humans played by Mark Wahlberg, Jack Reynor, and Nicola Peltz.

Two new clips have arrived and they show Wahlberg's character, who is apparently a dead-broke and overprotective father, discovering a wrecked Optimus Prime. Even without tons of stuff blowing up we still get Bay's trademark shots, like lecherously focusing on Peltz's ass, probably the reason he hired her to begin with. She's a talented actress, as seen every week on Bates Motel, but Bay has no interest in her ability to do anything except fit into a pair of tight shorts. Not even the presence of TJ Miller can make these scenes palatable and hopefully they don't last long.

Transformers: Age of Extinction opens June 27th, and if you're interested in catching it early just go here.

Four Clips of Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt in 'Edge of Tomorrow'

Tom Cruise may not be the box office giant he used to be, but he'll attempt to make a dent in the summer with Edge of Tomorrow, another sci-fi film dealing with all sorts of time travel craziness. Unlike many of the season's other major releases we haven't seen a ton of footage, but with the film only a couple of weeks away Warner Bros. has decided now's a good time to reveal four new clips.

Directed by Doug Liman and co-starring Emily Blunt, the story has Cruise as hapless soldier Lt. Bill Cage, thrust in a war with an alien race and killed almost immediately. But rather than that being the end of his story, Cage emerges in a time loop and must relive that battle over and over, dying repeatedly until he becomes a good enough soldier to change the tide of battle. And in these clips we see some of the grueling training Cage endures, and his unsuccessful attempts to make sexy time with Blunt's character. There's a great deal of action in each of these scenes, especially one with Cruise and Blunt on the battlefield that shows how far she's willing to go to make sure his mission succeeds.

Edge of Tomorrow opens June 6th.

Five Clips from 'The Fault In Our Stars' with Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort

It won't be all fun, games, and tentpoles this summer as there will be time to shed a few tears. And the film that is likely to have you reaching for a few Kleenex is The Fault In Our Stars, an adaptation of John Green's cherished novel about first love in the face of certain tragedy.

Shailene Woodley reunites with Ansel Elgort, the two of them playing siblings in Divergent just a couple of months ago. Now they'll play two cancer-stricken teens who meet at a support group and fall in love despite their circumstances. It's a story about living in the moment and making the most of the time you have, and in these five clips we see that Woodley is as impressive as ever. She's again working with screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, who penned The Spectacular Now for her, another teen romance dealing with some rough issues. Hey, you know it's bad when Woodley herself comes out and says to "get your tissues ready".

The  Fault in Our Stars is directed by Josh Boone and opens June 6th.

Juliette Binoche and Kristen Stewart Meet Chloe Moretz in New 'Clouds of Sils Maria' Clips

Debuting towards the end of the Cannes Film Festival and competing for the prestigious Palm d'Or is Clouds of Sils Maria, the latest from Summer Hours director, Olivier Assayas. The film stars Juliette Binoche as Maria Elders, an older actress who takes a role in a new version of the film that made her famous, with Chloe Moretz playing the young, beautiful, and somewhat shallow actress in her former part. Kristen Stewart is Binoche's assistant and we see in one of the two new clips just released, that her character and Maria don't exactly see eye-to-eye. This looks like a continuation of the conversation they had in the clip released a few days ago, dealing with Maria's insecurity over growing older. The other scene introduces us to Moretz's character, who still has a lot to learn.

Clouds of Sils Maria should hit theaters later this year courtesy of IFC Films.
