Review: 'The Giver' Starring Jeff Bridges, Brenton Thwaites, and Meryl Streep

Lois Lowry's book The Giverwas published twenty years, beating out The Hunger Gamesand Divergentby a considerable margin. In the case of the latter, which recently had an adaptation starring Shailene Woodley, the author has openly stated she drew inspiration from The Giver in crafting the faction-based, anti-diversity world of her popular novels. Does anybody really care about that, though? Nobody will think about which book came first, all they'll know is which film came first and which one looks like a derivative, boring entry in the YA genre.

The irony is so many of these films are about celebrating diversity yet they are virtually indistinguishable from one another. The Giver takes place in a future society where sameness is celebrated; all emotion eradicated and even the color spectrum is reduced to shades of gray. There is no war or hunger but there's also no excitement, and you can forget about sex or anything that qualifies as fun. Even words are highly regulated by this quietly oppressive governmental system, one that sends the elderly off to a mysterious paradise known as "Elsewhere". Of course this supposedly utopian society hides a dystopian underbelly, one that the Elders don't want to see revealed.

But if someone is going to expose what's really going on it may be Jonas (Brenton Thwaites), who during the "Choosing Ceremony" (well, that's what Divergent called it anyway) is shocked to learn he's been chosen to become the new Receiver of Memory. The Receiver is to train under the tutelage of the Giver (Jeff Bridges), a sort of Yoda master gifted (or cursed) with memories of how humanity used to be; the love, the war; the racism; the joy; the freedom; all the things that Jonas has never known. When Jonas' eyes are opened to the reality of human potential, and begins to see color in a way reminiscent of 1998's Pleasantville, he takes it upon himself to change the status quo once and for all.

The Giver explores our basic need to conform, to gain acceptance from others even at the cost of our individuality. This is a recurring theme we've seen far too often and done with greater insight by other films. The big problem is that Philip Noyce and screenwriting duo Michael Mitnick and Robert Weide do a terrible job of world-building , never fleshing out this society in a way that would make this believable. It's almost as if this was a movie made solely for the initiated who already knew everything going in, and maybe since Bridges has been developing this movie for a decade that's the case. He scored a major coup attracting the likes of Meryl Streep to star as the Chief Elder and she's so bland you wish for the hair-pulling excesses of August: Osage County. But she's a damn sight better than Thwaites who seems to have taken the lack of emotion to heart. While others such as Katie Holmes, Alexander Skarsgard, and Odeya Rush are expected to dial it back due to the story's requirements, Thwaites has no such excuse. He's comically bad and woefully stiff, but worse he's just not much of a presence at all. The story needs a charismatic figure and the only one it gets is Bridges. With a mischievous, knowing twinkle in his eye he's the only character fully-formed enough to warrant our sympathy, especially as he mourns over the memory of his last student (Taylor Swift in a minor cameo) who met a tragic fate.

While Streep is ostensibly the "villain" the real nemesis for Jonas is societal compliance, and that doesn't give him much to directly contend with. As a result there's a severe lack of action (unless sled rides are thrilling to you?) and a tone that stays flat throughout. Without a proper rising of the stakes the film ends with a resounding thud that won't have many aching for a sequel. Uniformity muddies The Giver's core message, and without a compelling story or central character it's not a film you'll want to receive.

 Rating: 2 out of 5

Five Clips from 'The Giver' with Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, and Taylor Swift

Lois Lowry's The Giver predates many of the currently popular YA novels, so there's been some attempt to separate it from the genre. The problem is, every single trailer and piece of footage makes it look exactly like the others, which is probably what The Weinstein Company wanted to begin with. Like it or not, these movies make a lot of money and those that tried to be different (I'll put Beautiful Creatures as one of those) haven't been met with a lot of success. With the film arriving in theaters this week, five new clips from the film have been released and one of them gives us a look at Taylor Swift in a small role.

The cast for this one is certainly impressive with Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges providing a veteran presence to Philip Noyce's film set in a society free of emotions and thus free of violence. In this supposedly utopian society one man, known as the giver, is gifted with the good and bad memories of the past. Brenton Thwaites plays Jonas, a young man who is the new Receiver of Memories, and upon learning how things used to be he decides that emotion needs to be restored. Of course there are those who would fight against him in order to keep the status quo. So basically this sounds almost exactly like Divergent, and with the requisite amount of teen romance in the midst of a societal breakdown it's just like every other YA story on the market. Katie Holmes and Odeya Rush co-star, and Taylor Swift makes a brief appearance as Rosemary, a key figure from the Giver's past.

Our own +Mae Abdulbaki swears by these books but I'm less than convinced. The Giver opens on August 15th, look for our review tomorrow.

Philip Noyce to Direct Ewan McGregor in 'American Pastoral'; First Look at Al Pacino in 'The Humbling'

In the works for more than a decade, an adaptation of Philip Roth's novel American Pastoral has seen Fisher Stevens attached as a director at one point, and briefly had Jennifer Connelly and husband Paul Bettany involved. But like other recent Roth adaptations, Elegy and The Human Stain, nailing down the right approach to the Pulitzer Prize-winning material has proven difficult, but Philip Noyce (Salt) has apparently figured it out.

According to Comingsoon and first reported some time ago by IF.com.au, Noyce will direct American Pastoral beginning early next year. Not only that, he's found a star in Ewan McGregor, who will play successful Jewish-American businessman Seymour "Swede" Levov, who sees his happy upper-middle class existence ruined by the turmoil of the 1960s under President Lyndon Johnson. John Romero (The Lincoln Lawyer) will write the screenplay.

And another of Philip Roth's novels is headed to the screen soon as Al Pacino and Greta Gerwig are starring in The Humbling, with the first image arriving via Chop Shop. This is another film that was kicking around for a lot of years before Pacino and director Barry Levinson (of HBO's You Don't Know Jack) decided to reteam on the story of a famed theater actor who begins having a sexual affair with a lesbian woman half his age. No word on a release date yet but the supporting cast is solid with Dianne Wiest, Mandy Patinkin, and Charles Grodin co-starring, and a script by The Graduate screenwriter Buck Henry.

New Trailer for 'The Giver' Shows a Colorless Future

In Lois Lowry's novel The Giver, there are numerous scenes depicted in stark black and white, so when the first trailer for the film emerged in full color it drove fans a little crazy. Maybe The Weinstein Company and director Philip Noyce heard the outcry, or maybe it was always designed to be this way, but the latest footage assures the book's readers the film will indeed be faithful.

While those same fans would also have you believe The Giver is not your typical YA adaptation, the trailers would seem to indicate otherwise. Starring Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Brenton Thwaites, Katie Holmes, Alexander Skarsgard, and Taylor Swift, the film is set in a seemingly idyllic world of total conformity, until one young boy receives the gift of past memories and threatens to expose a secret that could destroy everything. So it's not unlike Divergent and The Hunger Games in following one special character who threatens to break the fragile status quo by following their true feelings.

The Giver opens on August 15th.

First Trailer for 'The Giver' with Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, and Taylor Swift

Jeff Bridges has spent the better part of a decade developing The Giver, an adaptation of Lois Lowry's science-fiction children's novel. If it had come out then it would be entering a more wide open field, but with The Hunger Games, Divergent, and other similar adaptations out there it may be tough to stand out. It can't even lay claim to being (apparently) the only one to feature a male lead now that the male-dominated The Maze Runner is right around the corner. So what does The Giver have that these other films don't have? Meryl Streep.

The first trailer for The Giver has arrived and Streep is a big part of it, along with fellow Oscar-winner Bridges. Starring Brenton Thwaites, Katie Holmes, Alexander Skarsgarrd, Odeya Rush, and Taylor Swift (!!!), it's set in a seemingly perfect future society where there is no sickness, racism, or conflict. Only one person, known as the Receiver, still holds memories of the past. When Jonas (Thwaites) is selected to be the new Receiver, he uncovers dark secrets about the past while being trained by the Giver (Bridges).

There hasn't been much buzz about the film since it was announced,  and this rather dull trailer probably isn't going to change that. Will Streep fans pay to see her in a movie like this? We'll find out when the Philip Noyce-directed film opens August 6th.

Liam Hemsworth to lead Philip Noyce's sci-fi romance, 'Timeless'

When Philip Noyce(Salt) backed out of directing Hunter/Killer, the film he most eagerly jumped to was Timeless, a science fiction romance that sounds a lot like The Lake House meets The Time Traveler's Wife. Written by Bill Kelly(Enchanted), the film centers on a man who puts together a time travel device, financed by the money his late wife has left him, in order to go back in time and visit her one more time to resolve some lingering questions.

It seems like a prime star making vehicle for somebody, and in this case Noyce has chosen one of the fast rising actors in Hollywood who is looking for a film to call his own. Liam Hemsworth is the man to lead the film, which will hopefully start shooting in July.

Quickly gaining on his older brother in terms of notoriety, Liam has had a busy year starring opposite Miley Cyrus in The Last Song. This year will be even bigger as he'll be a major player in two major franchises, The Hunger Games and The Expendables 2. [Moviehole]

Philip Noyce to direct relationship thriller, The Arrangement

As much as I like Antoine Fuqua, part of me was a little disappointed when he got the job directing  Hunter Killer over Philip Noyce. After directing some great films like Clear and Present Danger, Rabbit-Proof Fence, and Dead Calm, Noyce made a big comeback last year with the Angelina Jolie spy flick, Salt. So I wanted to see what he could do if he stayed in the espionage realm. Unfortunately it wasn't meant to be.

That doesn't mean Noyce is slowing down or anything. He's just switching gears, recently adding the sci-fi romance, Timeless(starring Liam Hemsworth) to his upcoming slate. And now you can add one more as well, as THR reports Noyce has signed to direct The Arrangement, which sounds like a racially tinged version of Indecent Proposal.

Written by Brian Tucker(Broken City), the film centers on a married couple consisting of a white man and mixed race woman, who are approached by a wealthy black man with a lucrative offer to spend three days alone with the woman. How much you want to bet Beyonce stars in this? With Idris Elba as the wealthy dude? I'm getting quite the Obsessed vibe off this one.

This one will probably shoot some time after Timeless completes, so it's still a ways off. On a side note, if you haven't had a chance to catch Noyce's underrated apartheid flick, Catch a Fire, it's worth throwing into your Netflix queue.

Liam Hemsworth to star in Timeless, directed by Philip Noyce

Liam Hemsworth isn't exactly trailing behind his big bro, Chris, in the franchise department. While Chris has Thor, The Avengers, and Snow White and the Huntsman locked down for the next few years, Liam has the wildly popular The Hunger Games coming up. And let's not forget The Expendables 2, which if he survives promises to be around for a long time....assuming those old fogeys surrounding him don't get put in a home somewhere. So he'll be pretty darn busy in the coming years as well, but there's still time to add more.

Moviehole reports that he'll star in Timeless, the film Philip Noyce(Salt) dumped directing Hunter Killer for. The story centers on a recently widowed husband(Hemsworth) who discovers that his wife left him a fortune. Racked by their unresolved issues, he decides to use the money to build a time machine so he can go back and see her one final time. The script was written by Bill Kelly, who gave us the surprisingly good romantic fantasy, Enchanted.

I guess if movies like The Time Traveler's Wife and The Lake House turn me into a puddle of goo, I don't have the right to snort at this, either. It actually sounds pretty good, so we'll see how the rest of the cast shapes up. By the time this comes out, Liam will be awash in post-Hunger Games buzz, so expect Timeless to use that to their advantage.

Antoine Fuqua replaces Philip Noyce as director of Hunter Killer

What's the point of being one of Hollywood's most sought after filmmakers if none of your projects ever gets made? That's what's happening to Antoine Fuqua(Brooklyn's Finest) right now, as everything he puts his name to either sits in limbo or falls apart. The director has no less than six(!!??) films he's atached to already, and yet there's still room for one more. At least this one gives the appearance of actually shooting.

After Philip Noyce(Salt) dropped out of directing Hunter Killer last month, Relativity was left with a void to fill.  The vaguely Clancy-ish sounding film is based on a book by George Wallace, and deals with a submarine captain teaming up with a NAVY Seal to rescue the Russian president. The film already has a release date set for December 21st 2012, so this one is a definite go. Expect casting to begin almost immediately.

As for everything else Fuqua has on his plate? Well, his boxing film with Eminem got dropped by Fox, so that one may not ever happen. That Tupac biopic he's been nursing for what seems like forever has never gained any traction, and it never will until he finds someone to play the slain rapper. Good luck with that. It's been all quiet on the Afterburn front, the action flick he's attached to with Gerard Butler. Nor has there been any movement on his Chinese historical epic(seriously), The Tomb(possibly with Arnold Schwarzenegger), or heist film Storming Las Vegas. And now with Hunter Killer taking up his time don't expect to see or hear much on any of these for quite awhile. [Variety]

Philip Noyce set to direct Hunter Killer

Philip Noyce is probably best known for his political thrillers like Clear and Present Danger, Catch a Fire, and The Quiet American. My personal favorite remains the aborigine escape film, Rabbit-Proof Fence. Noyce has ventured into action a few times as well, most recently with Salt, starring Angelina Jolie.  Looks like he could be jumping back into a similar arena, as Relativity Media has just signed him to direct Hunter Killer, based on the novel Firing Point by George Wallace and Don Keith.

The script by Jamie Moss(X-men: First Class), John Kolvenbach, Arne Schmidt will follow "an untested submarine captain who must work with a Navy SEAL team to rescue the Russian president, who has been taken prisoner during a military coup, in an effort to stop a rogue Russian General from igniting World War III."

The plan is for shooting to begin late this year. Sounds like a pretty conventional action-thriller, complete with a pair of mismatched agents and a lunatic dictator probably spouting about nuclear annihilation.  I trust that Noyce will make chicken salad out of what sounds like chicken crap.
