Review: 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay part 1' starring Jennifer Lawrence

Politics has always been at the heart of The Hunger Games, keyed to greater effect in Suzanne Collins' novels than in the pair of film adaptation we've seen up to this point. That's to be expected; the focus has largely been on the tournament of violence the volatile heroine Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and her maybe-love Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) find themselves thrust into by the despotic President Snow (Donald Sutherland).  But among all of the battles and love triangles, make no mistake that politics, specifically how governments collude with the media to keep the populace naive, was a big part of why this franchise resonates as much as it does. Have you watched the cable news lately? Don't bother.

That Mockingjay maintains such a high level while evolving from a futuristic war film into a straight-up political thriller is an incredible achievement, even if it comes at the expense of the action some have come to expect. The "games" are different this time for Katniss, who has just been rescued by the rebellion after she literally blew up the Quarter Quell. Now she must face a twisted game of cat and mouse with President Snow, one in which he is more than happy to use a sickly, brainwashed Peeta as propaganda against her. But the rebels holed up in District 13's underground bunker are just as savvy, and with the encouragement of President Alma Coin (Julianne Moore) and Plutarch Heavensbee (the late Philip Seymour Hoffman in his final role), Katniss reluctantly agrees to become the "mockingjay" and lead the people of Panem in a battle against the Capitol.

Ironically, this is a movie about the power of the visual image to influence great societal change. Katniss isn't the most natural leader, so the early attempts to mold her into one are dismal failures. It's her now-sober mentor Haymitch (Woody Harrelson) who suggests taking her out into the field where a film crew led by Cressida (Natalie Dormer) can document her every move, turning her escapades into political ads to rally the other Districts. Her return home to District 12, destroyed by a bombing raid that killed practically everyone, is especially gruesome and heart-wrenching, the crunch of broken bones beneath Katniss' feet with every step. The 'hunger games' themselves are terrible, but it's nothing compared to the true evil inflicted by Snow while he grins behind that white beard and curling sneer. There couldn't have been a more perfect choice than Lawrence to play the strong, defiant Katniss, but let's not overlook the amazing Donald Sutherland. He deserves to be mentioned right alongside Ralph Fiennes' Voldemort, Heath Ledger's Joker, and whoever that guy was who played Darth Vader.

With Peeta firmly in the Capitol's clutches, the love triangle takes a bit of a hiatus. It's still there when we see Katniss' lovelorn pal Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth) comforting her as she pines for the deteriorating Peeta.  The lack of romantic sparks actually works to Gale's benefit as he finally starts to take shape as a real character, one with opinions that don't necessarily conform to what Katniss expects. Others get their moments to shine, including Finnick Odair (Sam Claflin) who is also anguishing over a lost lover; the eccentric inventor BeeTee (Jeffrey Wright) who has settled into his role as the rebels' tech guy; and Effie Trinkett (Elizabeth Banks) who has found a way to turn the ugly rebel grey/black uniforms into something close to chic. Incoming screenwriter Danny Strong, who knows a thing or two about political movies having penned Recount and Game Change for HBO, subtly tweaks each character to reflect the war-torn world they find themselves in now.

Those expecting Mockingjay part 1 to be just like Catching Fire may be disappointed, though. The thrills are of a different sort, and there isn't the "who's going to die next?" mystery hanging over every scene. Katniss remains at the center but this is about how she copes with having leadership thrust upon her, not how many Tributes she can fire an arrow into. It's another outstanding, complex performance by Lawrence who shows Katniss' vulnerability early on before igniting the rebel cause as the "girl on fire" later on. It doesn't seem to matter what role she's in, we can't help but feel a connection to her.

Francis Lawrence returns as director after helming 'Catching Fire', and it can't be overstated how the franchise has improved since the departure of Gary Ross. Not that Ross was terrible; he set the groundwork and Lawrence has taken it to a whole new level. By necessity there is less visual dazzle than before, but he still manages to flesh out the technologically advanced world of Panem in a way that is relatable.

There's more Mockingjay to come, of course, and the sequel promises to be all-out war. The first chapter ends on one heck of a nasty cliffhanger that does exactly what it's supposed to which is leave us anxious to see what's next.

Katniss meets Cressida in New 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay' Clip

One of the many reasons The Hunger Games has stayed ahead of the game the last couple of years is the amount of talent that keeps signing on to the franchise. While the cast was top notch right from the beginning, adding names like Jeffrey Wright, Julianne Moore, and Philip Seymour Hoffman were a major coup, and one of the most exciting new additions for the two-part Mockingjay finale is Game of Thrones star, Natalie Dormer.

Dormer plays Cressida, who plays her part in the rebellion by documenting every move Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) makes so the footage can be used to inspire others. In this clip we see Katniss' first meeting with Cressida, along with her video crew, including one who had his tongue cut out by the Capitol.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay part 1 is right around the corner, opening November 21st.

Return to District 12 in the New 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1' Teaser

By all accounts this has been a bounce back year for the YA genre after a disappointing 2013. Divergent and The Maze Runner got new franchises off on the right footing, and next month brings the first chapter in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, which has just revealed a new teaser.

Titled "Return to District 12", the footage shows Katniss...well, returning to her home in District 12 which is now smoking rubble due to the Capitol's attack. But Katniss is the "girl on fire", the face of the rebel army and she'll go back in to battle to defeat President Snow, rescue her brainwashed lover Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), and save Panem once and for all. She just won't do it in the first film, which is why the series' finale has been split into two parts.

Directed by Francis Lawrence, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay part 1 opens November 21st.

New Character Photos from 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay' Part 1

Through two films we've seen Lionsgate expertly utilize viral marketing and other online strategies in promoting The Hunger Games franchise, and obviously it has worked. That trend continues with Mockingjay part 1, and after releasing an excellent trailer not too long ago, the film's Instagram account has debuted eight new images of the supporting cast.  The photos give us a look at Jeffrey Wright as Beetee, Stanley Tucci as the toothy-grinned Caesar Flickerman, Sam Claflin as Finnick, Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne, Natalie Dormer as Cressida, Elden Henson as Pollux, Wes Chatham's Castor, and Mahershala Ali as Boggs.

Here's the synopsis: The worldwide phenomenon of The Hunger Games continues to set the world on fire with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, which finds Katniss Everdeen in District 13 after she literally shatters the games forever. Under the leadership of President Coin and the advice of her trusted friends, Katniss spreads her wings as she fights to save Peeta and a nation moved by her courage.

Directed by Francis Lawrence, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 opens November 21st.

Natalie Dormer is 'Patient Zero'; Liam Neeson Cameos in 'Ted 2'; Patrick Wilson Joins 'Bone Tomahawk'

Game of Thrones' Natalie Dormer will continue her busy steak by starring in Patient Zero, a zombie apocalypse thriller from Stefan Ruzowitzky, the Oscar-winning director of The Counterfeiters. Written by Mike Le, Patient Zero centers on one man with the ability to speak with the undead and hopes to use that power to end the zombie outbreak, saving his wife in the process. Dormer will be seen next in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay. [Deadline]

While Seth MacFarlane's comedy-western A Million Ways to Die in the West drew tumbleweeds earlier this year, he apparently had a good time working with Liam Neeson. MacFarlane revealed on Twitter that Neeson was part of Ted 2, but didn't say much about his role. It's likely to be just a cameo as it sounds like he was only on set for a day. He joins the returning Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis, with Amanda Seyfried taking on the female lead this time and Morgan Freeman playing a famous civil rights attorney. Ted 2 opens June 26th 2015.

Patrick Wilson and Matthew Fox have joined the intriguing horror Western, Bone Hawk, which already has Kurt Russell and Richard Jenkins starring. Directed by S. Craig Zahler, the story follows a sheriff (Russell), a gunslinger, a befuddled oldster (Jenkins) and a cowboy as they attempt to rescue a group of captives  from a band of cannibalistic troglodytes. Wilson plays a driven and thoughtful cowboy whose rise to the foreman position of a cattle outfit is interrupted by an unfortunate accident that reshapes his life in unforeseen ways. Fox will play John Brooder, the eloquent, albeit inscrutable gentleman whose dark inclinations have put him and his polished weapons at the very edge of the western frontier.

Two Clips from Lone Schefig's 'The Riot Club' with Sam Claflin, Max Irons, and Natalie Dormer

2009's great coming-of-age drama An Education not only introduced us to the supremely talented Cary Mulligan, it also put Dutch director Lone Scherfig on the map for a lot of people. It's been a little bit of a wait for her follow-up, The Riot Club, but it's another look at British high society and priviledge with a cast that's full of potential.

Sam Claflin, Max Irons, Natalie Dormer, Holliday Grainger (Bonnie & Clyde), Douglas Booth, Jessica Brown Findlay, Sam Reid (Belle), Olly Alexander (God Help the Girl), and Tom Hollander star in the film which screenwriter Laura Wade based on her popular stageplay. She drew inspiration from the real-life Bullingdon Club, Oxford University's most exclusive society that has produced some of the most powerful and prestigious figures in the U.K. The Riot Club premiered this weekend at TIFF, and since we all can't be there these two clips will have to suffice in showing what happens when rich, spoiled brats all get together in one place.

The Riot Club opens in the U.K. on September 19th but nothing for the U.S. yet.

The Rebellion Readies for War in New 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay' Posters

One aspect non-readers of The Hunger Games books will need to prepare for in Mockingjay Part 1 is the severe shift in focus. While the first two films centered on the actual Hunger Games death tournaments, the final two movies will be much more warlike. They will be an all-out battle between Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and the rebellion against President Snow, and now some of the new faces in that war have been introduced in new posters.

The images feature only one familiar face, that of Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne, but they all invoke a similar theme of battle-readiness. We also get a look at Game of Thrones star Natalie Dormer as Cressida, Wes Chatham as Castor, Elden Henson as his brother Pollux, Mahershala Ali as Boggs, and Evan Ross as Messalla.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay part 1 opens November 21st.

Katniss Is the Face of a Rebellion in First 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1' Trailer

Over the weekend Lionsgate took an unusual route in promoting The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 during Comic-Con. While it didn't have a panel or anything like that, a Comic-Con poster was released that got everyone's attention for the stark, militaristic image it presents. Plus, rather than debuting the first trailer in a traditional sense it was instead shown at select Best Buy stores in a collaboration with Samsung. It was a gutsy approach for the top YA franchise around, and it seems to have worked because anticipation for the new footage has been at an all-time high.

Now the trailer has been made available to the masses and it does a good job of showing the many different threats Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) faces without showing much of her at all. Instead the focus seems to be on how she's perceived by the people around her. Some are counting on her to be the face of the rebellion against the Capitol, while others don't quite have faith in her abilities yet. Meanwhile, President Snow is doing whatever he can to taint her image with the people, but as we see in the trailer's payoff moment she's not going down so easily; she came to fight.

The Hunger Games has always had a great cast but Mockingjay has taken that to another level. We get glimpses of Woody Harrelson and Josh Hutcherson back as Haymitch and Peeta respectively. The late Philip Seymour Hoffman is seen as Plutarch Heavensbee, the final role we'll ever see him play. And then we also see new additions Julianne Moore as Alma Coin, and Game of Thrones star Natalie Dormer as Cressida.

Directed by Francis Lawrence, part 1 of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay opens November 21st.

Natalie Dormer Joins 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay'

We're still a few months away from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, but that hasn't stopped Lionsgate from getting a jump on the final two chapter, Mockingjay. They've already secured director Francis Lawrence for the long haul, with Danny Strong (Lee Daniels' The Butler) penning the screenplays, and most notably they've added Julianne Moore to play Alma Coin. With only a handful of new roles to be filled, Game of Thrones star Natalie Dormer is the latest to come aboard.

Dormer will play Cressida, a former Capitol resident director who joins the growing rebellion, chronicling the adventures of Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence. Dormer is probably best known for her verbal battles with Cersei as Margaery Tyrell on Game of Thrones, or for the years she spent as Anne Boleyn on The Tudors. This is just the latest big screen move for her, as she recently appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger, and will co-star in The Counselor and Ron Howard's Rush.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 opens November 21, 2014, with Part 2 opening November 20, 2015

Two new 'Game of Thrones' teasers: 'War' and 'The Beast'

You can probably tell by the titles of HBO's latest Game of Thrones teasers that there isn't a lot of chatter going on. Both 'War' and 'The Beast' begin with important quotes, one by Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) and the other by Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen), hinting strongly that this season may be the bloodiest one yet. I'm personally just happy that we may be seeing more of The Tudors' Natalie Dormer as Margaery Tyrell , and it's hard to argue with Ciaran Hinds as the "King Beyond the Wall".

SpoilerTV (via Bleeding Cool) also has the plot synopsis for the first five episodes of the season, which begins on March 31st.  Check those out below, followed by the two teaser trailers....

Valar Dohaeris: Jon is brought before Mance Rayder, the King Beyond the Wall, while the Night’s Watch survivors retreat south. In King’s Landing, Tyrion asks for his reward. Littlefinger offers Sansa a way out. Cersei hosts a dinner for the royal family. Daenerys sails into Slaver’s Bay.

Dark Wings, Dark Words: Sansa says too much; Shae asks Tyrion for a favor; Jaime finds a way to pass the time; Arya encounters the Brotherhood Without Banners.

Walk of Punishment: Tyrion gains new responsibilities; Jon is taken to the Fist of the First Men; Daenerys meets with the slavers; Jaime strikes a deal with his captors.

And Now His Watch Is Ended: The Night’s Watch takes stock; Varys meets his better; Arya is taken to the commander of the Brotherhood; Daenerys makes an exchange.

Kissed by Fire: The Hound is judged by the gods; Jaime is judged; Jon proves himself; Robb is betrayed; Tyrion learns the cost of weddings.

1st look at Tommy Lee Jones in Captain America: The First Avenger!

The latest issue of Empire Magazine has a number of brand new images from Joe Johnston's Captain America: The First Avenger, including the first really good glimpses we're getting at Tommy Lee Jones as Col. Chester Phillips, Hayley Atwell as Cap's likely love interest Peggy Carter, and Richard Armitage as Heinz Kruger. We even get a look at the super sexy Natalie Dormer(The Tudors) as Private Lorraine.

Thanks to Comicbookmovie for these scans! We should be getting our first real footage of the film during this Sunday's Super Bowl, so keep an eye out for that! We'll hopefully have it up on the site not too soon after.
