First Clip from Marvel's 'Agent Carter' Introduces the Original Jarvis

There was no episode of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD last night, instead ABC ran one of those specials looking back at the studio's cinematic past in a way of hyping the future. They're usually pretty cool, and this one was a bit better as it also unveiled the first clip from Agent Carter, the series bringing back Hayley Atwell as agent Peggy Carter. This scene is notable for introducing Howard Stark's (Dominic Cooper) butler, Edwin Jarvis (James D'Arcy), the man who would be the inspiration for Tony Stark's computer system, JARVIS. With the series set in WWII and serving as a prelude to the formation of SHIELD, expect lots of little nods to the modern day Marvel Universe just like this one.

Agent Carter debuts on ABC beginning January 2015.

Peggy Carter Confirmed to Appear in Marvel's 'Ant-Man'

Marvel is going to make sure you see a lot of Hayley Atwell's Peggy Carter over the next year. Not only is the character getting her own mid-season series in Agent Carter, she was on the first episode of Agents of SHIELD's second season, and will appear in a 1940s flashback in Avengers: Age of Ultron.  A few months ago a rumor surfaced that Ant-Man would feature a scene between Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), Carter, a young Alexander Pierce (played by Robert Redford in Captain America 2), Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper), and Arnim Zola (Toby Jones). And now that story appears to have been confirmed by a recent casting call...

"NLC is searching for an experienced stand in for Haley Atwell. She is 31, 5’7″, 112 lbs. This will work in November on a Sunday. Please submit to nlcstandin@gmail.com with your headshot, age, height, weight and sizes. Must have experience. Thanks."

So what could their little meeting me about? More than likely it involves SHIELD and possibly the creation of Pym's matter-altering "Pym Particles". Then again with the villainous Pierce and Zola around it could have something to do with HYDRA. We'll find out when Ant-Man opens July 17th 2015.

Review: 'Jimi: All is By My Side' starring Andre Benjamin, Imogen Poots, and Hayley Atwell

So how does one go about telling the story of legendary guitarist and rock 'n roll icon Jimi Hendrix without the benefit of his most influential tracks? The short answer is that you probably shouldn't even try, but the approach taken by Oscar-winning writer/director John Ridley is to whittle down Hendrix's life to a brief snippet. Jimi: All is By My Side isn't so much a retrospective on his career as an atmospheric daydream of the time when fame is just beginning to take root. It's a bold attempt by Ridley to subvert the usual biopic boundaries, but he's defeated by a flat lead performance and a script that tells us little about Hendrix.

The story is well known at this point. Hendrix was just another musician toiling away trying to eke out a living in the competitive rock and R&B scene of the 1960s. At that point Hendrix wasn't eking out much of anything despite working with some pretty big bands using a guitar that wasn't even his own. That's right, young Hendrix couldn't afford his own instrument, and was something of a shiftless layabout to the woman in his life at the time. He borrowed her money and used it to get away from her, basically, but on this one night everything would change. It was the famous night at the Cheetah Club where he would meet Linda Keith (Imogen Poots), the then-girlfriend of the Rolling Stones' Keith Richards. She was infatuated with his sound, his look, the whole charismatic vibe, and with her help he began meeting the right people and a legend was born.

Well, sort of. The Hendrix we see is hardly great, despite us being told repeatedly how special everything about him is. Ridley never gives us a taste of his musical wizardry, and not having access to Hendrix's songs eventually becomes a big hurdle. It's not in the beginning when he's basically doing covers, but that's also when we're treated to a bland exploration of his issues with women. Linda, who refuses to leave Keith Richards to be by Hendrix's side, nonetheless has complete control over him. The drug abuse that would eventually be his downfall began at her urging. But at the same time she got him in touch with Chas Chandler who would become his manager, help form the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and land high-profile gigs in London.

Characters flit in and out of Hendrix's life, some more relevant than others. Hayley Atwell plays his longtime girlfriend Kathy Etchingham, with whom he hooks up with the day after his arrival in London. There's a glimpse at the jealousy between her and Linda, but other than one brief blow-up it's shunted to the background like so many other interesting avenues. For instance, Hendrix's role as a famous, flamboyant African-American in racially charged London is largely ignored except for one laughable conversation with a "Black Power" radical that goes nowhere. Other choices Ridley makes are puzzling deviations from history, and it's probably safe to call this mostly a work of fiction. When not holding a distant, aloof attitude towards women Hendrix is given to fits of violent anger that he takes out on them physically. It's one that that Etchingham, the target of one of the outbursts in the film, says that was never the case, but they don't actually add anything to our understanding of Hendrix either the man or the rock legend. We never see the work he put into developing the sound he would be recognized for.

All is By My Side amounts to a series of imagined conversations, with Andre Benjamin struggling to hold our attention through them. On paper he would seem to be a sneaky smart pick to play Hendrix, but it's an idea that should have stayed on paper and not put in practice. Most of the problem lies with Ridley's rambling screenplay not giving Benjamin much to work with, but he also lacks the enigmatic charm Hendrix had in spades. When we see Benjamin's Hendrix giving a flat rendition of The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" with the group watching from the crowd, all we can think is that these guys have nothing to worry about from this guy.

First Look at Agent Carter and the Howling Commandos in 'Marvel's Agents of SHIELD'

With SHIELD no longer a functioning spy force, the second season of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD will delve into the organization's history a little bit. And while they're at it, taking a few minutes to pump up next year's Agent Carter series couldn't hurt. We knew that Hayley Atwell's Peggy Carter character would appear on the show this season, but now TV Guide has revealed this new image from Agent of SHIELD's first season two episode, titled 'Shadows', and it shows Carter alongside Captain America's Howling Commandos.

The image features Atwell with Kenneth Choi as Jim Morita and Neal McDonough as Dum Dum Dugan, and hopefully that means they'll be part of Agent Carter, too. The episode will have Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) digging into the past to SHIELD's origins, hoping to find bring back the ideals from when the organization was started back in Carter's time. She was a member of a secret government agency that becomes part of SHIELD and winds up on a similar path as Coulson.  Here's the plot synopsis for 'Shadows':

‘Shadows’ – Coulson and his team are now wanted fugitives with limited resources–but that’s not stopping them from keeping the world safe from powerful and unseen threats everywhere. However, with new members they hardly know, will S.H.I.E.L.D. ever be trusted again?

Marvel's Agents of SHIELD returns to ABC on September 23rd.

Possible Spoilers on Which Marvel Characters will Appear in 'Ant-Man'

Filming on Marvel's Ant-Man is just getting underway with director Peyton Reed on board, but those who attended Comic-Con already got a look at what his vision for the film in the form of a brief teaser. There wasn't enough to it to get a sense of how Reed's vision differs from that of Edgar Wright, who left the project over creative differences with Marvel. One of those bones of contention had to do with blending Ant-Man deeper into the Marvel Cinematic Universe by adding more characters and plot threads from other movies. While there have been many script revisions since then, we may be getting a look at how Ant-Man ties into the larger continuity. Beware of spoilers!!!

The guys at Latino Review say they have learned of an Ant-Man prologue centered on Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), and a meeting he has with some very important people in the formation of SHIELD. Attending the meeting are Iron Man's daddy, Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper or John Slattery, probably the latter), Agent Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), Arnim Zola (Toby Jones), and a young Alexander Pierce. Out of those four at least two of them we know to be evil, but the inclusion of Pierce is intriguing. We last saw an older Pierce played by Robert Redford in Captain America: The Winter Soldier when he was revealed to be a mole working for HYDRA. Could the machinations of HYDRA have anything to do with the death of Pym's wife? And if Pierce is showing up here then it's a good chance we'll see him in the Agent Carter TV series which is set during SHIELD's early days.

A lot of changes have taken place on Ant-Man over the last few months so there's no guarantee this scene is still in there. It sounds like something that should stay in some form because of how much it connects the entire history of the Marvel Universe without being too obvious. Ant-Man opens next year on July 17th.

Trailer for War-Torn Drama 'Testament of Youth' Starring Alicia Vikander and Kit Harington

With 2014 marking the 100th anniversary of the start of WWI, you'd think more films centered on the Great War would be making the rounds, but that hasn't proven to be the case. One film that hopes to shine a spotlight on a forgotten hero of the war is Testament of Youth, which features a deep roster of top British talent, and now it also has a very impressive first trailer.

Filming only began a few days ago so having footage this soon is pretty remarkable. The film stars Alicia Vikander as renowned author and pacifist, Vera Brittain, and is based on her best-selling 1933 memoir. Brittain was an Oxford student who took time away from her studies to serve as a nurse on the frontlines after nearly everyone she loved was killed in the fighting. That was just the beginning of her story, and director James Kent hopes to tell it as a sweeping war-torn romance, with Game of Thrones' Kit Harington as Brittain's fiance.

Also starring Hayley Atwell, Emily Watson, Taron Egerton, Dominic West, Alexandra Roach, and Anna Chancellor, Testament of Youth opens in the U.K. on January 2nd. No word on a U.S. date.

Andre 3000 is Jimi Hendrix in First Trailer for 'All Is By My Side'

Even now 44 years after his death at the young age of 27 and at the height of his career, Jimi Hendrix is still considered by many to be the greatest guitarist who ever lived, and one of the finest entertainers. With his band the Jimi Hendrix Experience he helped shape the nature of rock 'n roll, and his seminal album Are You Experienced is something truly historic. So it makes sense that Hollywood would want to make a biopic on his fast and brief life, but does writer/director John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) do it justice with All Is by My Side?

The first trailer for the biopic has been released and it features Outkast's Andre 3000 as Hendrix, more than looking the part even if he seems to lack the necessary charisma. But that's only part of the issue as Ridley battled with the Hendrix estate for rights to the musician's music, ultimately losing and was forced to make the film without any of it. So the result is a movie on Jimi Hendrix without Hendrix's signature sound, and according to reviews from the festival circuit that becomes a major problem. The story takes place while Hendrix is in London the verge of hitting big time, and dealing with the two women in his life, played by Imogen Poots and Hayley Atwell.

Also starring Burn Gorman, Ruth Negga, and Ashley Charles as Keith Richards, All Is by My Side opens September 26th.

New Logo Art for Marvel's 'Agent Carter' Series

Pretty soon there will be more Marvel TV shows than there are Marvel movies, and basically you'll be able to watch something superheroic every single week without breaks. Marvel's troubled Agents of SHIELD has been picked up for another go 'round, and they've also got a handful of Netflix shows gearing up in the near future. But ABC also picked up Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter straight to series, and without wasting any time have released this piece of promo art.

Pretty simple, but you get the early SHIELD logo design right away. It'll be interesting to see if there will be any crossover between the older and newer versions of the intelligence agency. Here's a plot description for the show, which is expected to be a 13-episode limited series:

Marvel’s Agent Carter, starring Captain America’s Hayley Atwell follows the story of Peggy Carter. It’s 1946, and peace has dealt Peggy Carter a serious blow as she finds herself marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad.

Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), Peggy must balance doing administrative work and going on secret missions for Howard Stark all while trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life–Steve Rogers. Inspired by the feature films Captain America: The First Avenger and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, along with the short Marvel One-Shot: Agent Carter.

Starring Hayley Atwell as Agent Peggy Carter, Marvel’s Agent Carter is executive produced by Christopher Markus, Steve McFeely, Tara Butters, Michele Fazekas, Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Jeph Loeb.

ABC Renews 'Agents of SHIELD' and Picks Up 'Agent Carter' for Series

Marvel's Agents of SHIELD suffered through the same growing pains that most shows go through in their first season, but because fans were expecting to see The Avengers every week they were much harder on it. The ratings decline left some doubt whether the show would get picked up for a second season, but it appears the good word about the most recent episodes has won ABC over.

Agents of SHIELD has been renewed for another season, even though there isn't much of SHIELD left right now. Fortunately we'll have a chance to see the secret organization's origins as the network has also picked up Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter series, just as expected. Carter was a key figure in Captain America: The First Avenger and received her own One-Shot short film. She was seen again this year in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Below is description for the series, which just leaped to the top of my most anticipated list. On the other hand, Constantine, the Flash, and iZombie, all of which were just picked up by other networks, are shows I'll probably skip.

It's 1946, and peace has dealt Peggy Carter a serious blow as she finds herself marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad. Marvel Developing Captain America TV Spinoff 'Agent Carter'

Marvel have found tremendous success with their One-Shot series of shorts, all of which turned up on the Blu-Ray editions of their major features. Basically serving as a bridge between their theatrical films, they've also helped spark other projects that expand the universe. Last year's Item 47, which followed SHIELD agents dealing with the repercussions of The Avengers, helped spark the Agents of SHIELD TV series debuting next week. Now it looks like Marvel is taking another One-Shot and using it as the basis for a second network series, only this one would be focused on a single fan-favorite character.

Deadline reports that Marvel is developing a series centered inspired by Agent Carter, the short film starring Hayley Atwell as Captain America's former flame, Peggy Carter. Atwell first portrayed her in Captain America: The First Avenger, and it was fan outcry that led to the Agent Carter One-Shot, which follows her as she joins the newly-created SHIELD and takes on her first mission. The series, which is still seeking a writer, would take on a similar path and focus on her "as a budding secret agent after her boyfriend is stranded in ice."

Joss Whedon oversees all of Marvel's projects and he's been talking for months about the need to create more content geared towards women, so this would seem to be right in his wheelhouse. There's no mention of his involvement, however, nor anything about Atwell. She's worked in TV on various miniseries before, so it wouldn't be a stretch to see her reprising the role. She'll appear briefly as Carter in next year's Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Nothing is confirmed as of yet, but it looks like Marvel is expanding their influence even further. How long before ABC just has an entire night of programming dedicated to Marvel superheroes? Agent Carter will be part of the Iron Man 3 Blu-Ray on September 24th.

New Clip from Marvel One-Shot 'Agent Carter'

Unlike the early Marvel One-Shots with Agent Coulson which were mostly comedy shorts, the latest have been purely about action. That is definitely the case for Agent Carter, which brings back Hayley Atwell as the popular Peggy Carter from Captain America: The First Avenger. After a clip was released just last month, a new one has hit which shows that Peggy isn't so easy to get the drop on. Having just joined the newly-formed SHIELD, Peggy is on a mission to find the Zodiac, while also dealing with a chauvinist boss played by Bradley Whitford.

Agent Carter will be included as part of the Iron Man 3 Blu-Ray on September 24th.

First Clip from Marvel One-Shot 'Agent Carter' Starring Hayley Atwell

Just as they did last year with Item 47, Marvel premiered their latest One-Shot short film at Comic-Con for a group of lucky fans and press. Titled Agent Carter, it has Hayley Atwell reprising her popular Peggy Carter character from Captain America: The First Avenger. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get in to the screening this time (seriously Marvel, what's up with that?), but fortunately the first clip has been released before it becomes part of the Iron Man 3 Blu-Ray/DVD special features on September 24th.

Picking up right after the events of 'Captain America', Agent Carter finds herself joining the new SHIELD organization, and taking on a mission to locate the Zodiac key. To do it she'll need to stand up to her chauvinistic boss, who thinks a guy could probably do the job of being a spy better. There are a couple of other nice cameos to be found that are worth keeping secret.

We know Peggy Carter will be turning up in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and that Emily Van Camp will be playing her niece, Agent 13 aka Sharon Carter. So consider Agent Carter a nice bridge between the past and the present.

First Poster and Images from Marvel One-Shot 'Agent Carter'

With Captain America: The Winter Soldier keeping the patriotic Avenger in the present, a number of his WWII colleagues have mostly been left behind. One of those who we sadly won't be seeing kick any butt is Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, who was a firecracker in the first film and will make a brief cameo in the sequel. Fortunately, Marvel is smart enough to recognize just how popular a character she was, and have put together a One-Shot short film just for her, appropriately titled Agent Carter.

Making its debut at Comic-Con, just as Item 47 did a year ago, the film is due to be a part of the Iron Man 3 Blu-Ray/DVD special features. I was there at the premiere last year and will be dutifully scouring the city in hopes of being there for this one, as well. Entertainment Weekly have dropped the first images and a vintage poster, along with some choice quotes from Marvel Studios co-president Louis D'Esposito about where the story fits in the overall scheme of things...

D'Esposito: “Not everyone can be frozen in ice from that period, so it was: How do we tell another Hayley Atwell story? It’s a year since Cap plunged into the ocean. And in our mind, we said there’s a few SSR offices. If you want to relate it to now, it’s like the OSS, the precursor to the CIA. The SSR is the precursor to S.H.I.E.L.D. There’s some satellite offices in New York and right now their primary concern is getting Zodiac. Zodiac in the books has been many many different things. We just want you to know it’s deadly, it’s important, bad guys are guarding it, and it’s imperative she gets it.”

The West Wing star Bradley Whitford plays a government official getting in Carter's way, which is pretty cool in and of itself, but it also sounds like the introduction of Zodiac could be a major plot point later on. Then again I thought the same thing about Item 47, and nothing has really been done with that storyline. Iron Man 3 hits store shelves on September 24th, and you can pre-order it here.

'Captain America 2' Surprise Cameo; Possible 'Doctor Strange' Villains Revealed

Steve Rogers won't be doing any time traveling in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, so we can reasonably expect he won't be revisiting the WWII era any time soon. That means most of the characters from the first film won't be turning up, with the most obvious exception of Bucky, who has returned as the assassin known as Winter Soldier. It also means Cap is likely going to be searching for a new lady love, and some recent set photos make it pretty clear he'll be stealing a few kisses with none other than Black Widow.

That's not all, though, as a new image captured by the Cleveland Heights Patch (via Bleeding Cool) shows another familiar face will be making an appearance, and it's one that can promises to complicate any matters of the heart. Spoilers beyond this point, folks!

As you can see, that's an aged up Hayley Atwell in the third image, in what looks to be a a scene set in the present day. The caption says it's taking place at "a nursing home where Cap, played by Chris Evans, is visiting with his fellow World War II veterans." So it looks like Cap will be mending old fences with Peggy Carter before moving on to new ones with Black Widow. Fortunately we'll get to see Peggy as her younger, butt-kicking self in a new Marvel One-Shot debuting at Comic-Con. You'd best believe I'll try to be there for that.

And moving on to Doctor Strange, which has a better than average shot of being one of the two mystery films Marvel recently set dates for. Latino Review has come up with what they say are going to be the three villains the good Doctor will be facing, and they're exactly who you would expect them to be. So much so that I've had a hard time drumming up the fire to even post this, because this is truly the low-hanging fruit of movie rumors.

So the story says that Strange's primary foe will be his chief nemesis, Dormammu, the all-powerful mystical ruler of a dark alternate dimension. Because of his very nature as an ancient uber-demon, his powers are pretty much limitless. Dormammu's henchman would be Baron Mordo, the black mage who trained under the same mentor as Strange. This strikes me as a little off, as Mordo would make more sense as the main villain as he and Strange are basically polar opposites. Also appearing in a major action sequence will be the monstrous Mindless Ones, who are basically the mystical foot soldiers of the Marvel Universe.

This almost sounds too plausible to be true, if that makes any sense. It sounds like what someone thinks a Doctor Strange movie would be, not like what it may actually turn out to be.  We can reasonably expect that Dormammu and Mordo will play a part in the film, but it's way too early to know exactly what they'll be doing.

Is Marvel planning a Peggy Carter short film for Comic-Con?

Considering how popular Hayley Atwell was as Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger, it was always a little surprising that Marvel wasn't trying harder to find way to bring the WWII heroine into the present for the sequel. Right now she'll possibly turn up in a small cameo, but the part of leading lady has been taken over by Emily VanCamp, who will be playing Peggy's niece, Sharon Carter. But Marvel has apparently recognized fans' love of Peggy, and may have something special for them at this summer's Comic-Con.

Speaking with The Age (via our friends at Bleeding Cool), Atwell seems to reveal plans for a Marvel One-Shot centering on Peggy Carter...

"There’s been an online campaign for Peggy to be featured. People really liked her. So Marvel have made sure that as part of Comicon there will be a little kind of snapshot as to what Peggy’s actually really capable of, which was finished here and which was great fun. Hopefully, it will lead to other things."

Marvel debuted the Item 47 One-Shot at last year's Comic-Con so this would make some sense. The story could serve as a "bridge" of sorts from the first film to the next, but right now there aren't any details, Marvel secrecy and all.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens on April 4th 2014.

Hayley Atwell to cameo in 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier'?

Wasn't it just last month we learned that Hayley Atwell wouldn't be returning as Peggy Carter in Captain America: The Winter Soldier? Although a disappointing move, it made sense with Cap now in the present and Emily VanCamp likely to play Carter's niece, Sharon. But maybe it was all misdirection on her part, because Collider spoke to Stanley Tucci who said she'd be making a cameo....

Tucci: "I know that Hayley is going back to do a flashback scene, but I have not been asked."

Only a flashback? I was hoping to see an older version of Peggy who runs into Cap still in his prime. Tucci also refers to his character, Dr. Erskine, who was one of the best parts of the first film. Sad that he won't be coming back. Then again, he could be wrong or misleading us. Maybe both he and Atwell are making brief appearances? Maybe neither?

Whatever the case, neither would have a role that amounts to much. Starring Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Samuel L. Jackson, Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo, Toby Jones, Scarlett Johansson, and Cobie Smulders, Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens on April 4th 2014.

Hayley Atwell won't be back for 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier'

We're still waiting to hear who will taking on the female lead in Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The part is rumored to be for Sharon Carter, the niece of Peggy Carter, who was played quite brilliantly by Hayley Atwell in the first film. Unfortunately, while we have no update on any new casting, we know that Atwell won't be reprising her role.

Time Out had the chance to speak to Atwell, and she apparently confirmed it to them. Here's the relevant info....
It was last year’s double-whammy of Golden Globe nomination for miniseries The Pillars of the Earth and blockbuster debut as Chris Evans’s’ all-action girlfriend in Captain America: the First Avenger that brought her to international attention. She won’t, she confirms, be back for the latter’s sequel, which moves the action into the present day.

Atwell likely wouldn't have had much of a presence, anyway, except maybe in flashback. She recently left the upcoming comedy spinoff, 10 Things I Hate About Life, presumably to film the second season of Black Mirror.

Jessica Brown Findlay was last said to be the frontrunner for the Sharon Carter role, so hopefully we'll get confirmation on that soon. Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Maria Hill, Samuel L. Jackson, Frank Grillo, and Scarlett Johansson will star in Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4th 2014.

1st look at Andre 3000 as Jimi Hendrix in 'All Is By My Side'

After looking like it was never going to happen, production has finally begun to roll on John Ridley's Jimi Hendrix biopic, All Is By My Side. Outkast's Andre Benjamin is taking on the role of the famed rocker, with Hayley Atwell(Captain America: The First Avenger) playing Linda Keith, the woman who discovered him and introduced him to The Rolling Stones' manager. So the story basically takes place between 1966-1967, leading up the seminal release of Hendrix's Are You Experienced.

We're getting our first look at Benjamin and Atwell on set, with the the former definitely looking the part, and the latter rockin' some blazing crimson locks. Contrary to what I wrote a couple of weeks ago, the Hendrix Estate is not authorizing this film, so we may actually see an unbiased glimpse at his roller coaster, all too brief career. I wish I could tell you these photos fill me with confidence, but John Ridley(Red Tails) is a spotty filmmaker at best, so it's best to temper expectations....[Comingsoon]

Andre 3000 gears up for Jimi Hendrix biopic, 'All is By My Side'

We've been hearing about a number of Jimi Hendrix biopics over the years, yet none seemed to have a snowball's chance of getting made. Paul Greengrass(Green Zone) was attempting one, but the one that sounded most interesting would feature Outkast's Andre Benjamin(Andre 3000) in the role of the legendary rocker. I just sort of assumed it was dead like most biopics end up, until last year when Hayley Atwell(Captain America: The First Avenger) said she was up for a role. Now it appears the film has finally received the green light from the Hendrix estate, as production is set to begin in just three weeks.

John Ridley(Red Tails, Three Kings) will be writing and directing, his first feature gig behind the camera since 1997's Cold Around the Heart(featuring a gorgeous Stacey Dash!). Titled All is By My Side, the film will take place around 1966-1967, when Hendrix was first discovered by Keith Richards' girlfriend and introduced to the manager of The Rolling Stones. From there he soon went to London and recorded the seminal album, 'Are You Experienced', and began his road to rock 'n roll greatness.

Filming is set to take place in Ireland with a six-week production schedule set. Benjamin seems like a good choice to play Hendrix on paper. He has the look and obviously the musical chops for the part, but his acting has been spotty to say the least. If it were up to me it'd be Lenny Kravitz all the way. I'm guessing since this is another "estate approved" biopic(much like the recent Marley documentary), we won't see too much of the many demons that plagued Hendrix throughout his career. I could be wrong, though. We'll just have to wait and see. [IFTN]

Three actresses in contention to star in Oblivion opposite Tom Cruise

And suddenly Tom Cruise is popular again. After going through a terrible drought for a few years, he came back in a big way in Tropic Thunder, and despite the flopperoonie that was Knight and Day, he's got a lot on his plate right now. Not the least of which is Oblivion, the sci-fi follow up by Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski. Taking place in a future earth where humans live above the clouds after an alien invasion destroyed the planet, Cruise will play a drone repairman who discovers a mysterious woman in a crashed ship. Her presence forces him to question everything he's ever known.

Last month, Jessica Chastain(The Help) took over the less interesting sounding female lead role as Cruise's wife. That left one more, that of the unknown woman. Deadline reports that three actresses are in contention for it and will read for the role this weekend: Kate Beckinsale; Hayley Atwell; and Diane Kruger.

Beckinsale has the most franchise experience, playing Selene in three of four Underworld flicks. Atwell is fairly new to the game, but opened a few eyes as gun-packin' Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger. And Kruger is probably best known for her recent turn in Inglourious Basterds, but she's also been a part of the National Treasure series of films. She also makes for a damn fine Helen of Troy. Just sayin'. So any one of the three would make sense. Personally I'd shoot for Kruger to land this one, but part of me thinks they'll want to pair Cruise up with a newer face and go with Atwell.

Oblivion is due to hit theaters on July 19th 2013.
