Review: 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay part 1' starring Jennifer Lawrence

Politics has always been at the heart of The Hunger Games, keyed to greater effect in Suzanne Collins' novels than in the pair of film adaptation we've seen up to this point. That's to be expected; the focus has largely been on the tournament of violence the volatile heroine Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and her maybe-love Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) find themselves thrust into by the despotic President Snow (Donald Sutherland).  But among all of the battles and love triangles, make no mistake that politics, specifically how governments collude with the media to keep the populace naive, was a big part of why this franchise resonates as much as it does. Have you watched the cable news lately? Don't bother.

That Mockingjay maintains such a high level while evolving from a futuristic war film into a straight-up political thriller is an incredible achievement, even if it comes at the expense of the action some have come to expect. The "games" are different this time for Katniss, who has just been rescued by the rebellion after she literally blew up the Quarter Quell. Now she must face a twisted game of cat and mouse with President Snow, one in which he is more than happy to use a sickly, brainwashed Peeta as propaganda against her. But the rebels holed up in District 13's underground bunker are just as savvy, and with the encouragement of President Alma Coin (Julianne Moore) and Plutarch Heavensbee (the late Philip Seymour Hoffman in his final role), Katniss reluctantly agrees to become the "mockingjay" and lead the people of Panem in a battle against the Capitol.

Ironically, this is a movie about the power of the visual image to influence great societal change. Katniss isn't the most natural leader, so the early attempts to mold her into one are dismal failures. It's her now-sober mentor Haymitch (Woody Harrelson) who suggests taking her out into the field where a film crew led by Cressida (Natalie Dormer) can document her every move, turning her escapades into political ads to rally the other Districts. Her return home to District 12, destroyed by a bombing raid that killed practically everyone, is especially gruesome and heart-wrenching, the crunch of broken bones beneath Katniss' feet with every step. The 'hunger games' themselves are terrible, but it's nothing compared to the true evil inflicted by Snow while he grins behind that white beard and curling sneer. There couldn't have been a more perfect choice than Lawrence to play the strong, defiant Katniss, but let's not overlook the amazing Donald Sutherland. He deserves to be mentioned right alongside Ralph Fiennes' Voldemort, Heath Ledger's Joker, and whoever that guy was who played Darth Vader.

With Peeta firmly in the Capitol's clutches, the love triangle takes a bit of a hiatus. It's still there when we see Katniss' lovelorn pal Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth) comforting her as she pines for the deteriorating Peeta.  The lack of romantic sparks actually works to Gale's benefit as he finally starts to take shape as a real character, one with opinions that don't necessarily conform to what Katniss expects. Others get their moments to shine, including Finnick Odair (Sam Claflin) who is also anguishing over a lost lover; the eccentric inventor BeeTee (Jeffrey Wright) who has settled into his role as the rebels' tech guy; and Effie Trinkett (Elizabeth Banks) who has found a way to turn the ugly rebel grey/black uniforms into something close to chic. Incoming screenwriter Danny Strong, who knows a thing or two about political movies having penned Recount and Game Change for HBO, subtly tweaks each character to reflect the war-torn world they find themselves in now.

Those expecting Mockingjay part 1 to be just like Catching Fire may be disappointed, though. The thrills are of a different sort, and there isn't the "who's going to die next?" mystery hanging over every scene. Katniss remains at the center but this is about how she copes with having leadership thrust upon her, not how many Tributes she can fire an arrow into. It's another outstanding, complex performance by Lawrence who shows Katniss' vulnerability early on before igniting the rebel cause as the "girl on fire" later on. It doesn't seem to matter what role she's in, we can't help but feel a connection to her.

Francis Lawrence returns as director after helming 'Catching Fire', and it can't be overstated how the franchise has improved since the departure of Gary Ross. Not that Ross was terrible; he set the groundwork and Lawrence has taken it to a whole new level. By necessity there is less visual dazzle than before, but he still manages to flesh out the technologically advanced world of Panem in a way that is relatable.

There's more Mockingjay to come, of course, and the sequel promises to be all-out war. The first chapter ends on one heck of a nasty cliffhanger that does exactly what it's supposed to which is leave us anxious to see what's next.

Katniss Prepares for War in Final Trailer for 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1'

"If we burn, you burn with us", Katniss roars at President Snow in the new, jam-packed 60 second trailer for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1. Following on the events of Catching Fire, Katniss Everdeen is now the face of a revolution, leading the people of District 13 against the Capitol. Meanwhile she must also rescue Peeta, who has been captured and brainwashed, while also protecting her family from Snow's inevitable retaliation.

Supposedly the "final" trailer before the film's arrival on November 21st, it promises massive scope and a ton of action, with Jennifer Lawrence looking as strong as ever as Katniss. With a cast that includes Philip Seymour Hoffman, Julianne Moore, Woody Harrelson, Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Banks, Jena Malone, Jeffrey Wright and more, let's hope they remember to keep a focus on the characters and not just on big special effects. They've done a pretty good job of it so far, and with the finale split into two chapters there should be even more time to get it right.

Mockingjay Part 1 will be followed by Part 2 on November 20th 2015.

President Snow's Speech is Hacked in New 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1' Teaser

"Because now more than ever, Panem is speaking with one voice".  Yeah, President Snow (Donald Sutherland) may want to think again on that score. He's been pushing the unity card pretty hard ever since the last address, and now in this new teaser for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay part 1, his speech is interrupted by the rebel forces he's railing against.

With a brainwashed Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and Johanna Mason (Jena Malone) by his side, Snow's latest Capitol TV broadcast sounds a lot like the first one, and probably would have ended with another thinly-veiled threat against those who oppose him. However, address is soon interrupted by technological wiz, Beetee (Jeffrey Wright), who informs the public that "The Mockingjay lives".

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay part 1 opens November 21st.

President Snow Threatens Panem in 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1' Teaser

"Panem today. Panem tomorrow. Panem forever". The first two movies in The Hunger Games series have rightfully taken their place at the top of the YA hill, with both films combining for more than $1.5B worldwide. To put it in perspective, Shailene Woodley's Divergent only has about $270M right now meaning she's got a long way to go to catch up with Jennifer Lawrence. With the final book in Veronica Roth's trilogy being adapted into two separate movies, the marketing for Mockingjay Part 1 has been going on for quite awhile, and now it takes a slightly threatening turn with the latest viral.

Decked out in awesome all-white attire that somehow makes him more menacing, Donald Sutherland returns as President Snow to deliver a TV address to the citizens of Panem. While he mostly talks about forging a perfect union built on togetherness (the spot is called "Together as One" for a reason), Snow can't help but make a thinly-veiled threat to those who may rebel against the Capitol's wishes. There's a mild spoiler in the presence of Josh Hutcherson's Peeta Mellark, who was captured by Snow's men at the end of the last film and is clearly brainwashed or something now.

With new additions Julianne Moore, Natalie Dormer, and Gwendoline Christie joining the returned cast, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 opens November 21st directed by Francis Lawrence.

The Final Trailer for 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' is Here!

"Ms. Everdeen, you fought very hard in the arena, but they were games. Would you like to be in a real war?" It's nice of President Snow to ask, but we all know Katniss Everdeen doesn't really have any say in the matter, and in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire she'll be thrown into another life-or-death battle, but the fate of an entire nation is at stake this time.

With less than a month before the film hits theaters, the final trailer has been released and Lionsgate is going out with a bang. This one focuses squarely on the simmering battle between Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and President Snow (Donald Sutherland) as rebellion brews throughout the nation of Panem. Katniss and her lover Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) don't get to celebrate their victory in the 74th Hunger Games long as the Capitol targets them for extinction. The best way to do it is by throwing them into the 75th Hunger Games, known as the Quarter Quell, in which they'll face the greatest surviving champions.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire debuts at the Rome Film Festival (boooo!!) before opening on November 22nd.

Katniss Leads a Rebellion in New 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' Trailer

The summer may be winding to a close, but that doesn't mean we're free from more blockbuster tentpoles. One that promises to be among the biggest of the year is right around the corner in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and after dropping an impressive trailer during Comic-Con, a new one has been released with even more footage.

While shorter, this trailer does a better job depicting the growing rebellion Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) have begun in the oppressed nation of Panem. We also get another look at the action within the Quarter Quell, featuring the previous Hunger Games winners in a fight to the death, and the scheming President Snow (Donald Sutherland) as he plots Katniss' demise. What comes across mostly is that the sequel is going to be much bigger and definitely darker in spirit than the last film.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opens on November 22nd.

The first trailer for 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' is here

Those who endured the bad jokes and lame teasers during tonight's MTV Movie Awards were treated to something special at the end of the show. After a week of hype and photos showing off the popular cast of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, the first full trailer has finally been revealed, and it really only fills in the blanks on half the story.

"She has become a beacon of hope for them. She has to be eliminated". With those words, President Snow (Donald Sutherland) begins his plan for revenge on Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) for their survival of the last Hunger Games. We see them on their "Victory Tour" across Panem, which Snow and new Head Gamesmaker Plutarch Heavensbee (Philip Seymour Hoffman) plot to use as a means of ruining her image to the people. We see brief flashes of a growing rebellion, and only the barest mention of Snow's plan to destroy all of the past victors in the Quarter Quell.

Francis Lawrence takes over for Gary Ross behind the camera, and their differing styles are apparent almost immediately. Lawrence's camera is less frenetic, but this could be because none of the action footage is being shown just yet. The film is still seven months away, but what is the early verdict on what you've seen?  Does this make you more excited for November 22nd and the release of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire?

Seneca Crane and President Snow discuss strategy in new 'The Hunger Games' clip

A new clip from The Hunger Games has been released, and unlike the others we've seen up to this point, it provides a glimpse at what motivates the ruling Capitol. Despite the glitzy, showbiz atmosphere that surrounds the brutal annual event, President Snow(Donald Sutherland) makes it clear to Head Gamemaker Seneca Crane(Wes Bentley) that he has an ulterior, sinister motive.

Directed by Gary Ross and based on the wildly popular novels by Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games is the first part of a planned trilogy starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci, and Elizabeth Banks. As if you don't know by now, the film opens on March 23rd....[IGN]

Red Band Trailer Time: The Mechanic, starring Jason Statham and Ben Foster

I have a soft spot for movies like The Mechanic. Give me a hitman, a mission, a mostly unwanted apprentice, and I'm in. CBS Films has released a brand new red band trailer for the film, itself a remake of the 1972 Charles Bronson actioner. Simon West(Con Air) is behind the camera.

As if the previous trailer wasn't violent enough, there's a damn sight more blood in this one with some better looks at a few of the kills. There's even some nipple action, so definitely don't watch this one at work.  I'm really digging the intense vibe between Statham and Ben Foster, two of my favorite screen performers. I hope this one's good because I've been looking forward to it for a long time.

The Mechanic hits theaters on January 28th 2011. We'll be checking it out a few days before and will definitely be reviewing it here on the site. So check out the out new trailer below, and as always let us know what you think!
