Review: 'Two Night Stand' starring Miles Teller and Analeigh Tipton

Modern dating is a jungle of random hook-ups, Internet dating sites with questionable profiles, and other hurdles When Harry Met Sally never had to contend with. In fact, if you want to get a safe if disturbing look at how romance has changed just take a gander at the current state of romantic comedies, which have been forever altered by social networking and the ease it brings to casual sex. But does that simplicity come with the price of reduced intimacy? Of course it does, and in Two Night Stand two desperate millennials looking for easy sexy are forced to actually get to know one another, with modestly charming and even perceptive results.

First-time director Max Nichols (son of director Mike Nichols) chose wisely with his leads, Miles Teller and the lesser-known but bubbly Analeigh Tipton. She makes for an unconventional romantic lead which works because the same applies to Teller, an actor who has shown incredible range in more serious films in the past. He's not called upon to do quite as much here, although Nichols and screenwriter Mark Hammer have an ear for millennial lingo, crucial considering the film is basically a two-hander set in one cramped apartment. Tipton plays Megan, stuck in a rut since her longtime boyfriend left her, and now she spends Saturday nights lounging at home in frumpy sweatpants. Encouraged by her roommate (Jessica Szohr, with Kid Cudi as her boyfriend) to get back out there, Megan hits an online dating site for a quick hook-up, something she's never done before. She quickly meets Alec (Teller), who seems to be exactly what she's looking for; meaning he's cute, uncommitted, and not a serial killer. A quick scan via webcam confirms no bodies hanging on his apartment walls.

The night of awkward sex ends with the equally embarrassing "walk of shame", but not before the two realize they have nothing in common. Attempting to flee his Brooklyn crib and back home, she's prevented by a Roland Emmerich-style blizzard that has shut down the city. She's not going anywhere, and is stuck getting to know Alec when she hoped to never see him again. If you guessed this would be the chance for two heart-hardened strangers to fall in love after only a few hours then you're right. The path to getting there is a bumpy one comedically, as the script tries too hard to come up with catchy, pseudo-intellectual quips about dating. The phrase "Benjamin-Buttoning" is used to describe Megan's backsliding in life, but the silly lingo doesn't do much to acquaint us with either character. Nor does the silly sitcom plotting that involves vomit, overflowing toilets, and petty crime provide much in the way of laughs.

It's not until the film takes a more serious turn that Nichols and Hammer start dropping a few pearls. A frank conversation about men and women helping one another have better sex has some real insights. And once we see Megan and Alec put all of their emotional cards on the table it also opens up the performances by Teller and Tipton. Both strike a believable vulnerability as two people who have been bruised by love and are reluctant to give it another shot. Teller seems to be able to build chemistry with anybody, a rare talent that should take him far. Tipton has the much flakier role to play and she manages to be endearing rather than irritating. Ultimately, Two Night Stand is about the way such people use whatever is at their disposal to protect themselves from more hurt. Sometimes that's a convenient half-truth, or a dating profile that needs an update.

Juno Temple, Giovanni Ribisi, and Kid Cudi Join Olivia Wilde in 'Meadowland'

So what does being an award-winning cinematographer get you? In the case of Reed Morano, known for her acclaimed work on Kill Your Darlings, Frozen River, and the upcoming dramedy The Skeleton Twins, it gets your directorial debut a pretty amazing cast. Over the last few days we've seen a number of big additions to Meadowland, and now with production kicking off another round of stars have come aboard.

Juno Temple, Giovanni Ribisi, Scott "Kid Cudi" Mescudi, Mark Feuerstein, and Kevin Corrigan have joined Meadowland. The indie drama already stars Olivia Wilde, Luke Wilson, Natasha Lyonne, Ty Simpkins, Elisabeth Moss, and Yolanda Ross. The story follows Sarah (Wilde) and David (Wilson), a New York couple dealing with the disappearance of their son. While David copes in a more traditional manner, Sarah gets into increasingly dangerous situations and befriends a troubled boy.

Meadowland is filming now this seems like something destined for the festival circuit next year. Sundance, maybe?

Trailer, Poster, and Clips from Rom-Com 'Two Night Stand' Starring Miles Teller and Analeigh Tipton

Check out the charming but forgettable rom-com What If this weekend and what you'll find is the familiar story of two best friends who are clearly soul mates except one is too blind to notice. It's been done to death, but right alongside it is the oft-told story of two people who try to build a relationship from a one night stand and the obvious problems that causes. We saw that particular tale recently in the remake of About Last Night, now we're getting it one more time with Two Night Stand, which has just released an unimpressive trailer.

Analeigh Tipton (Crazy Stupid Love, Warm Bodies) plays a young woman whose life is in disarray. Her roommates (Jessica Szohr, Kid Cudi) want her to move out, and she's still struggling with a major break-up. So to get things back on track she decides to have a one night stand with Alec (Miles Teller, The Spectacular Now), but when it's time for the "walk of shame" she can't leave because of an epic snowstorm. Stuck in an incredibly awkward situation they decide to be honest with one another, for better or for worse.

These do not look like characters I'd want to be stuck anywhere with, much less watch a movie about, and that's sad because Tipton and Teller are usually worth paying money to see. Directed by Max Nichols, Two Night Stand opens September 20th. Check out the trailer below plus a bunch of clips.

Review: 'Need for Speed' Starring Aaron Paul, Dominic Cooper, and Imogen Poots

After years of cheering on Vin Diesel leap from speeding muscle cars, survive deadly crashes, and shift gears a thousand times over in the Fast and the Furious franchise, do we really have the right to criticize Need for Speed for....well, anything? Of course this blazing, pedal-smashing adaptation of the best-selling video game strains credulity and cares more about shredding tires than building characters, it also has enough breathtaking race action to cross the finish line with some style.

Need for Speed is a straight up revenge tale; more in league with the early F&F films before they shifted into heist gear. Directed by ex-stuntman Scott Waugh and starring Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul, any thought of plot complexity goes up like a puff of exhaust fumes within moments. Paul plays badass racer Tobey Marshall, who with his close-knit crew of pals (Rami Malek, Scott "Kid Cudi" Mescudi, Ramon Rodriguez, and Harrison Gilbertson) run a floundering but respected body shop in town. When arrogant ex-NASCAR tough guy Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper) shows up in town with an offer to rebuild a legendary ride, it's an offer Tobey can't resist. Unfortunately it also leads to a showdown between the two, who share a past beefin' over the same woman (Fifty Shades of Grey's Dakota Johnson). A dangerous race in souped up cars leads to Dino killing the most earnest and innocent of Tobey's friends, framing him for the accident.

Two years later and out on parole, Tobey is looking for vengeance, the kind of vengeance that only comes from behind the wheel. The only way to do that is to gather his remaining team, score the fastest car on the planet, and enter the Deleon, a dangerous race for the world's best drivers. The race is put on by recluse Monarch (Michael Keaton, kind of fun but clearly high on something), who has a street racing podcast run out of his living room. Doesn't sound like the type of guy to hold such amazing sway, but there ya go. Putting the old crew back together is easy, topped off by a hilarious job quitting scene by Malek, who after his scene-stealing performance in Short Term 12 is becoming a terrific character actor. Finding a car proves to be no problem for Tobey, either, thanks to Julia (Imogen Poots), the quirky English gal who negotiated the deal for Dino and Tobey's hyped up car. Together they race across the country to find the location of the big race, all the while avoiding keystone cops and surviving mercenaries looking to cash in on the bounty Dino has placed on Tobey's head.

You'll be shocked, no doubt, to learn that the relationship between Tobey and Julia starts off antagonistic, only to give way to the flashing blinkers of love. They're actually quite a fun pair, even if the role seems a step beneath Poots. She's just feisty enough to match up nicely with the ever-intense Paul, who makes for more an action lead than a romantic one. The real stand-out here is Waugh, who co-directed the "real" military thriller Act of Valor a couple of years ago. He's more in his element directing cars rather than people, and he made the brilliant decision to use real cars, real stuntmen, and real blazing speed in every action sequence. Don't bother looking for any CGI because there isn't any, and it's a decision that adds a real urgency and momentum to every jaw-dropping sequence. Keeping car chases and smash 'em up collisions fresh is never easy but Waugh pulls it off easily. If Need for Speed continues on as a franchise, not a sure thing just yet, Waugh could prove to be as integral to it as any member of the cast.

Need for Speed isn't going to change the negative perception of video game movies, which is fine because it doesn't seem to have any aspirations other than to be a dumb, fun action flick. It may be the less starry, less flashy cousin of F&F, but there's plenty of room for both to exist.

Tahar Rahim Leads 'Le Père Noël'; Kid Cudi Joins 'Entourage'; Brittany Snow, William H. Macy to 'Dial-A-Prayer'

* After starring in emotionally devastating dramas A Prophet and The Past, Tahar Rahim is taking on something lighter with the Christmas comedy, Le Pere Noel. Directed by Alexandre Coffre, the film "begins one evening on 24 December. More than anything else in the world, six-year-old Antoine wants to have a sleigh ride through the sky with Father Christmas… So when, as if by magic, Father Christmas lands on his balcony, the child is too amazed to see through Santa’s disguise and realise that he is actually a burglar who will not let anyone get in the way of his night’s work. Each in search of his own dream, “Father Christmas” and his apprentice team up for one night only to scale the Parisian rooftops and steal the riches contained within the handsome, deserted apartments.” So a French Bad Santa, basically? Sounds good to me. [Cineuropa]

* One of the last big developments on HBO's Entourage was the promotion of Ari Gold's tortured assistant, Lloyd. That means Ari's in need of a new assistant to make miserable, and that role will be filled by rapper Kid Cudi aka Scott Mescudi. He joins Billy Bob Thornton and Haley Joel Osment as new additions to the Entourage family, with director Doug Ellin and all of the original cast returning. Cudi will be seen next in Need for Speed opposite Aaron Paul.

* Brittany Snow and William H. Macy are in talks for the indie comedy, Dial-A-Prayer, from actress/director Maggie Kiley. While Macy's role is unknown, Snow will play " a young woman named Cora who is sentenced to community service working in a prayer request call center. She discovers a sense of accomplishment from the work until she finds out a boy she thinks she helped save is hiding a secret from her." Snow recently agreed to return for Pitch Perfect 2, while Macy was just at Sundance premiering Rudderless, his directorial debut. [THR]

Aaron Paul Takes the Wheel In First 'Need for Speed' Trailer

Don't worry too much for Aaron Paul as Breaking Bad comes to a close after five seasons. The actor has spent the last year building up his rep on the big screen, giving a strong performance in last year's alcoholism drama Smashed, and lining up his first franchise in the video game adaptation Need for Speed. Of course comparisons already have it pegged as being the ugly stepchild to Fast & Furious, and at least judging by the first trailer that may turn out to be accurate.

Directed by Scott Waugh, who turned the supposedly realistic Act of Valor into what looked like Call of Duty, Need for Speed's racing scenes don't pack a whole lot of punch and certainly don't rival that of the game. Slightly more successful are the dramatic aspects, with Paul playing a street racer who hooks up with a wealthy associate played by Dominic Cooper, only to be double-crossed and framed for manslaughter. When Paul gets out, he comes looking for revenge and seeks it by joining an illegal cross-country race, but a bounty placed on his head makes things even more deadly. Hot rides race over dangerous terrain, get flipped, explode, and it's a pattern that will probably be repeated until the credits roll.

Waugh isn't the most inspiring director, but he should be able to pull off a simple, no-frills action flick like this, and it's good to see Paul hitting the big time. Plus there's reason for optimism with Michael Keaton and Imogen Poots joining him, so maybe there's more to Need for Speed than meets the eye. Eh, probably not. We'll find out when the film opens March 14th.

First Look at Aaron Paul, Kid Cudi, and Dakota Johnson in 'Need for Speed'

Video game adaptations are Hollywood's new plaything, much the same way comic book films were just a few years ago. Over the last few months we've seen many of the top video game franchises optioned to become features, and one of the first was Need for Speed, based on the best-selling racing series. Unlike the awful video game movies that were a foul stain on the 1980s and '90s, this one actually looks promising with a cast that includes Aaron Paul, Dominic Cooper, Dakota Johnson, Imogen Poots and Kid Cudi. Ok, not so much for Kid Cudi but everyone else is pretty terrific, and now we get our first look at them in the film.

EW has debuted the first Need for Speed images, which feature Mr. Cudi and Paul on set, in which the Breaking Bad star describes as as "throwback to the Steve McQueen era of car movies". Dominic Cooper is in the other image opposite Dakota Johnson, the actress suddenly on fire after landing the lead in Fifty Shades of Grey.  He plays the villain of the piece, while she is Paul's ex-girlfriend, now hooked up with Cooper. The story centers on a cross-country street race Paul's character must win to get revenge after being released from prison.

Directed by Scott Waugh, Need for Speed opens on March 14th 2014.

Sure Shots: Kid Cudi; 'Ben-Hur'; 'The Odyssey'

* Scott "Kid Cudi" Mescudi is the latest to join the cast of Need for Speed, the video game adaptation directed by Scott Waugh(Act of Valor). Already starring Adrian Paul, Imogen Poots, and Dominic Cooper, the film won't be based on any particular game in the franchise, but will be faithful to the series while celebrating the great car movies of the 1970s. Cudi's role is unclear at this point, but I doubt it'll require much in the way of acting. Probably more driving skill will be called for. [Deadline]

* Guess what's getting a reboot courtesy of MGM? Ben-Hur, the 11-time Oscar winning Charlton Heston classic, that's what. The studio is picked up a spec script by Keith Clarke(The Way Back) adapting Lew Wallace's 1880 novel, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ. The story will follow the early years of Judah Ben-Hur and his childhood friend Messala, the latter betraying him and selling the former into slavery. That leads to a whole mess of chariot races and stuff. This one will differ from the 1959 film in that it will also tell the parallel story of Jesus Christ, who Ben-Hur meets on numerous occasions. There's still no director attached, but you know MGM wants their own slice of the Christian audience pie. [Deadline]

* While U.S. audiences mostly shrugged it off, Warner Bros. found greater success overseas with their Homeric adaptation, Troy. Now they're dipping back into the well again by taking on Homer's The Odyssey, only it'll be set in space courtesy of writer James DiLapo. Oi vei this sounds horrible. The original story followed King Odysseus' dangerous journey home after the events of The Illiad, facing down monstrous threats while at home his wife is being pursued by potential suitors. Brad Pitt, who played Achilles in Troy, was attached to this film at one point, but has since moved on. [Deadline]

Sure Shots: Kristin Scott Thomas; Kid Cudi; Harold Perrineau

* After a couple of years in development, Suite Francias from director Saul Dibb(The Duchess) took a big leap forward last week when Michelle Williams entered talks to star in the WWII-era romantic thriller. Now you can add the great Kristin Scott Thomas to the cast, joining the adaptation of Irene Nemirovsky's novel which centers on the troubled love affair between a French woman and a Nazi officer. Production is set to begin next spring in London. [Screen Daily]

* Apparently nobody in Hollywood actually watched HBO's How to Make It in America, otherwise they'd stop hiring Kid Cudi for movie roles. The popular musician-turned-actor has now joined the indie romantic comedy Two Night Stand. Directed by Max Nichols, the film stars Analeigh Tipton(Crazy Stupid Love) and Miles Teller(Footloose) as two people who meet online and have a one night stand, only to get snowed in the next morning and forced to spend time together. Cudi, aka Scott Mescudi, will play the boyfriend of Tipton's roommate, played by Jessica Szohr(Tower Heist). [THR]

* Soon to be seen in Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty, Harold Perrineau has now joined the cast of Ten, the latest film from director David Ayer(End of Watch). He'll join fellow Lost alum Josh Holloway in starring opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sam Worthington in a story that follows a team of DEA agents who rob a drug cartel, only to get picked off one-by-one. Malin Akerman, Mireille Enos, Dawn Olivieri, Terrence Howard, Joe Manganiello, and Olivia Williams co-star. [Variety]

Welcome to the World of Kid Cudi as one of Michael Bay's 'Ninja Turtles'. Maybe.

I don't care much for Kid Cudi, either as an actor or as a so-called rapper. But the guy has his fans, and more power to them. Enjoy. What concerns me now is what he's been flashing around his Tumblr page, this image of a Ninja Turtle he received from Brad Fuller and Andrew Form, who along with Michael Bay make up the Platinum Dunes brain trust. Y'know, those guys who are making that Ninja Turtles movie everybody is up in arms about? Yeah, that. Here's the image....

Cudi, real name Scott Mescudi, had been meeting with the two and received the sketch by Kevin Eastman of an unknown turtle. His post alongside the image concluded with the words "Hint hint mane". Horrible and irritating English aside, Cudi seems to be hinting that he is not only talking with Platinum Dunes about the Jonathan Liebesman directed flick, but that he is already on board. Later he tweeted this to all those die hard TMNT fans still chugging Turtle Wax over Bay's plan to make the heroes aliens...

"To everyone with doubts & concerns about the new TMNT reboot, trust me, there is NOTHING to worry about. Trust. Everyone will be pleased!"

Now it's possible that Cudi got an inside look because he'll be working on the soundtrack or something, but I think he'll actually be voicing one of these bad boys. We'll certainly find out soon enough. Ninja Turtles is due to open next year on Christmas Day.  [Huffington Post]
