Box Office: 'The Equalizer' Equalizes the Competition for #1

1. The Equalizer- $35M
Old reliable. That's what they should call Denzel Washington, especially when it comes to action movies like The Equalizer. This one is based on the 1980s TV series, and reunites Denzel with his Training Day director, Antoine Fuqua, and it got off to a strong start with $35M. It's the third biggest opening of his career, and let's be honest that people like him better in tough guy-mode than they do in a film like Flight, although that one did pretty well, too. With Sony Pictures having already moved forward on a sequel, Denzel is guaranteed to come back for what would be the first follow-up of his storied career which is pretty amazing to consider.
2. The Maze Runner- $17.5M/$58M
Sliding a respectable 46% in its second week is The Maze Runner, and it looks like the next big YA franchise to sit alongside The Hunger Games and Divergent. At a cost of only $32M this one is playing huge for 20th Century Fox, which is why they've already lined up sequel The Scorch Trials for next year.
3. The Boxtrolls- $17.25M
Critics have always been big fans of Portland-based animation studio Laika, lavishing their prior films Coraline and ParaNorman with high praise. Matching box office has failed to follow, but with The Boxtrolls' $17.25M debut they've earned their biggest opening weekend yet. While a bit weirder than their other projects, the humor is clearly targeted at kids and geared to appeal to wider audiences, and it seems to have paid off. Internationally, The Boxtrolls got off to a solid start with an additional $11M.
4. This is Where I Leave You- $7M/$22.5M
5. Dolphin Tale 2- $4.8M/$33.6M
6. No Good Deed- $4.6M/$46.6M
7. A Walk Among the Tombstones- $4.2M/$20.8M
8. Guardians of the Galaxy- $3.7M/$319.1M
Unbelievably, the strongest hold of the week goes to Guardians of the Galaxy, which slipped only 22% and added another $3.7M. It's now surpassed the $318M domestic haul of Marvel's Iron Man, and the $644M worldwide total for Thor: The Dark World.
9. Let's Be Cops- $1.9M/$79.6M
10. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles- $1.4M/$187.1M

Box Office: 'No Good Deed' Gets Last Laugh with $24.5M Debut

1. No Good Deed- $24.5M
In news that is sure to convince Sony never to pre-screen another movie again, the Idris Elba/Taraji P. Henson thriller No Good Deed scored $24.5M in its opening weekend. This comes after the studio pulled press screenings for it at the last minute, stating they didn't want early reviews to spoil the twist ending. That was a bunch of bunk, of course, and once critics did see it the film got slaughtered. But this is a case where the film was probably always going to do well. Elba and Henson have both cultivated sizable audiences, in particular in rather trashy films like this. Let's not forget one of Elba's biggest movies was Obsessed, which opened to similar numbers back in 2009.
2. Dolphin Tale 2- $16.5M
It looks like the same Dolphin Tale...cost the same as Dolphin Tale...and has the same cast as Dolphin Tale...but Dolphin Tale 2 opened a bit lower with $16.5M, compared to the first film's $19M debut and $95M run in 2011. The sequel brings back some heavy-hitters like Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd (if only this was a Kiss the Girls sequel!) so there's a good chance for a long, lucrative run, especially with few family-friendly options on the way.
3. Guardians of the Galaxy- $8.0M/$305M
4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles- $4.8M/$181M
5. Let's Be Cops- $4.3M/$72.9M
6. The Drop- $4.2M
A slow rollout for the Dennis Lehane-penned crime drama, The Drop, opening at only 809 theaters. It's a quietly strong debut for the final performance by the late James Gandolfini, surrounded by a phenomenal cast that includes Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, Matthias Schoenaerts, and the cutest pit bull puppy ever. Never underestimate the power a cute dog can have on a movie's box office! This is a small-scale effort, costing barely $10M to produce, and given the solid reviews, cast, and the aforementioned pup it could be a solid indie hit.
7. If I Stay- $4M/$44.9M
8. The November Man- $2.7M/$22.4M
9. The Giver- $2.6M/$41.3M
10. The Hundred-Foot Journey- $2.4M/$49.4M

Box Office: 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Tops the Slowest Weekend of 2014

1. Guardians of the Galaxy- $10.1M/$294.5M
And you thought last week was terrible for new released? This week brings only one and it's a film nobody has ever heard about and apparently didn't show up for. That one will be seen much further down the list as this week sees the six-week-old Guardians of the Galaxy remaining on top with $10.1M. It's already the highest-grossing film of 2014 and  has spent five weeks at the top of the chart. Worldwide it sits with a mighty $586M.  Next week isn't exactly a powerhouse, either, with Dolphin Tale 2 and the Idris Elba thriller No Good Deed the only major new releases. One of those will probably knock Guardians of its perch, but would anybody be surprised if they couldn't?
2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles- $6.5M/$174.6M
3. If I Stay- $5.7M/$39.6M
4. Let's Be Cops- $5.4M/$66.5M
The sleeper hit of the summer, no doubt.
5. The November Man- $4.2M/$17.8M
Pierce Brosnan's espionage thriller The November Man didn't really bounce back in week #2, slipping 57% and earning $4.2M. Not the best way to start a franchise.

6. As Above, So Below- $3.72M/$15.5M
7. When the Game Stands Tall- $3.7M/$23.4M
8. The Giver- $3.5M/$37.8M
9. The Hundred-Foot Journey- $3.2M/$45.6M
10. Lucy- $1.95M/$121.2M

So not all of the faith-based movies can be gems, right? The week's only new release is The Identical,  an atrocious piece of junk that speculates what would happen if Elvis Presley's stillborn twin brother had survived and couldn't live up to his potential. It's actually a pretty nifty concept but was cheaply-made and dumped unceremoniously into 1,956 theaters. Hardly a wide release but the $1.9M it earned shows audiences wouldn't have turned out if it were 3,000.

Box Office: 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Still #1, Now Top Movie of 2014

1. Guardians of the Galaxy- $16.3M/$274.6M
Not only is Guardians of the Galaxy #1 for the second week in a row after reclaiming the spot last week, it's now the top-grossing movie for all of 2014 at $274M. A couple of days ago it surpassed Marvel's other superhero flick, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, meaning the House of Ideas has the top two movies for the entire year. This is what we like to call "dominance".  Obviously it won't come near the $612M domestic haul of The Avengers, but there's every chance it will surpass the $300M+ of Iron Man 2 and Iron Man 3. Guardians of the Galaxy has also been a hit internationally with an additional $273M.
2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles- $11.7M/$162.4M
3. If I Stay- $9.2M/$29.8M
The Chloe Moretz tear-jerker If I Stay held strong, only slipping 40% in week two. The YA drama only cost about $11M so it's performing well enough.
4. As Above, So Below- $8.3M
Labor Day is notoriously awful for new releases, and obviously this one is no different. The first new flick of the week is the low budget horror, As Above So Below, a film that comes with few credentials other than the presence of Devil and Quarantine director John Erick Dowdle. Do those even count as credentials?
5. Let's Be Cops- $8.2M/$57.3M
6. The November Man- $7.6M/$9.3M
James Bond just got his ass royally kicked by the bumbling boys in blue of Let's Be Cops, and they've been at it for nearly a month. There was a lot of hope for Pierce Brosnan's The November Man, which he produced and has been developing for a decade, simply because people like him as a suave secret agent-type. Or maybe they only like it when he's Agent 007 because nobody showed up for The November Man, which actually opened on Wednesday and still managed to do worse than most of the week's holdovers. Kinda makes that decision to greenlight a sequel so early a little sketchy, right? The film has been racked by poor reviews (including my own) although audiences gave it a 'B+' Cinemascore for some reason.
7. When the Game Stands Tall- $5.6M/$16.3M
8. The Giver- $5.2M/$31.5M
9. The Hundred-Foot Journey- $4.6M/$39.3M
10. The Expendables 3- $3.5M/$33.1M
While its numbers here are pretty terrible, The Expendables 3 has earned $50M overseas. Is it enough for Sly to consider getting the band back together? Probably not.

Box Office: 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Back on Top; Audiences Skip 'Sin City 2'

1. Guardians of the Galaxy- $17.6M/$251.8M
It's rare that a film leaps back into first place after four weeks of release, but that's what Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy has done. The remarkably long-legged film slipped 31% and has surpassed Transformers: Age of Extinction as the top earner for the season. It's also only $6M shy of passing Captain America: The Winter Soldier as the top domestic film of the year. And Marvel thought it may be their first dud! Ha! Overall it still lags behind 'Winter Soldier' and its $700M worldwide total but Guardians of the Galaxy has to be Marvel's greatest success story.
2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles- $16.8M/$145.6M
3. If I Stay- $16.3M
The top new release of the week was If I Stay, another one of those YA adaptations audiences love so much. This one has been compared to The Fault in Our Stars, mainly because they both involve a teen romance met with medical complications, but the truth is If I Stay was never expected to be on the same level. So when one looks at the meager $11M budget and Chloe Grace Moretz as the only marketable name that $16.3M debut isn't all that bad.
4. Let's Be Cops- $11M/$45.2M
Quick name one person in Let's Be Cops. No big stars, but smart marketing has turned this lowbrow buddy comedy into a surprising hit. So where's the sequel announcement?
5. When the Game Stands Tall- $9M
In a year that has seen faith-based movies assert a certain box office dominance, When the Game Stands Tall's $9M is pretty weak. But if the football drama, which stars Jim "Jesus Christ" Caviezel, Laura Dern, and Michael Chiklis, performs like the studio's other efforts (Fireproof, Soul Surfer) it won't need a big weekend to be successful. These movies have shown extraordinary staying power, and maybe it will get an added boost with the NFL season on the verge of kickoff.
6. The Giver- $6.7M/$24.1M
7. The Expendables 3- $6.6M/$27.5M
8. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For- $6.4M
Oof. Audiences weren't exactly dying for Robert Rodriguez's Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, which opened with a dismal $6.4M. Perhaps it was the eternal 9-year wait after the groundbreaking 2005 film, which opened with $29M and went on to earn $158M worldwide, not bad for a dark and brooding adaptation of a non-superhero comic. But one of the problems faced by the sequel, and this is something I've mentioned numerous times on the site, is that technology has changed by leaps and bounds over the years and Sin City 2 looked dated by comparison. So while adding new names like Eva Green and Joseph Gordon-Levitt were a big plus, the marketing can't really focus on them because of the vignette-style of the movie itself.  With Rodriguez and Frank Miller already talking up a Sin City 3 they're going to need to pull huge international numbers to justify it.
9. The Hundred-Foot Journey- $5.5M/$32.7M
10. Into the Storm- $3.8M/$38.3M

Box Office: 'The Expendables 3' and 'The Giver' Flop, 'Let's Be Cops' Debuts Strong

1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles- $28.4M/$117.6M
It was supposed to be a tough second weekend for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles but it turned out be a cakewalk. Slipping a customary 56%, the film hauled in another $28M and now has $185M worldwide, enough for Paramount to move forward on a sequel. Turtle power is still alive and kicking.
2. Guardians of the Galaxy- $24.7M/$222.2M
Trailing just behind TMNT was Guardians of the Galaxy, and it has so much momentum at this point it should cross the domestic totals of X-men: Days of Future Past, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and The Lego Movie. Yeah, it's doing that well. Crazy, right?
3. Let's Be Cops- $17.7M/$26.1M
No, the top new release this week is not The Expendables 3. It's actually the lowbrow comedy Let's Be Cops, which has zero marketable stars compared to Sly Stallone's literal army of them. What does that tell you when a $17M buddy film can best a starry behemoth of a franchise so easily? In this case it probably says more about the viability of The Expendables than anything else, but it's also a feather in the cap of rising star Jake Johnson. The New Girl star has been making waves on the big screen for a little while now, and with a role in next year's Jurassic World we could be seeing a lot more of him. Perhaps in Let's Be Cops 2? You know it's coming.
4. The Expendables 3- $16.2M
Oh, there's The Expendables 3; buried behind two holdovers and a minor comedy with a fraction of its budget and star power. So what happened? Sylvester Stallone and his aging crew of action heroes added some legit names in Wesley Snipes, Harrison Ford, and Mel Gibson, but the results are the franchise's lowest debut by a wide margin. It's possible the DVD-quality leak from a few weeks ago had a bigger than expected impact, and that's likely to be the studio's talking point on the issue. There's still hope in the cast's worldwide appeal to power international grosses, but this is looking more like the Expendables' final mission.
5. The Giver- $12.7M
Hey, remember The Giver? Yeah, that came out this weekend, too, and apparently you weren't the only one who forgot about it. The latest interchangeable YA adaptation didn't have a lot of heat behind it, despite the presence of Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, and Taylor Swift. On the plus side, it only cost $25M and should manage to make that back with no problem even with the terrible reviews. But it's also unlikely this will grow into the Hunger Games-level franchise The Weinstein Company was hoping for.
6. Into the Storm- $7.7M/$31.3M
7. The Hundred-Foot Journey- $7.1M/$23.6M
8. Lucy- $5.3M/$107.5M
9. Step Up All In- $2.7M/$11.8M
10. Boyhood- $2.1M/$13.8M

Cowabunga: 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2' Already Set for 2016

After a troubled production that would harsh even Michaelangelo's buzz, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles quieted the nay-sayers with a $65M opening weekend and $93M worldwide. That far exceeded analyst projects and Paramount isn't wasting any time in taking advantage of it, announcing that a sequel is already in development with a release date in sight.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 is set to open June 3rd 2016, which would put it up against Seth Rogen's R-rated animated comedy, Sausage Party. Michael Bay will again be co-producing through his Platinum Dunes banner, with co-writers Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec back to write the screenplay and exec-produce.

Here's what Adam Goodman, President of Paramount's film division, had to say on the rapid move on a sequel...

"Launching a new take on the Turtles into the feature film world was a daunting task because as fans of them ourselves, we felt a great responsibility to ensure audiences were going to experience everything they loved about the Turtles, while also getting to see them brought to life in a way they had never been seen before. The result exceeded our high expectations and the response to the film is beyond great, making it all the more fun to get started on the continuation of their story."

No word on whether Jonathan Liebesman will return to direct, or if any of the performance-capture actors will reprise their roles. There's also nothing on the return of Megan Fox but she would have to be expected to return as April O'Neil. [THR]

Box Office: 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Slices Up $65M Debut

1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles- $65M
Those who thought Michael Bay would be the deathknell of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles might want to grab another slice of pizza and take a seat. The film overperformed with $65M when analysts were projecting only about $40M. This is despite some pretty awful critic reviews (I dug it enough), and the lingering presence of Guardians of the Galaxy, and maybe it has do to with the marketing clearly aimed at luring in kids. Whatever the reason, the $125M film, which earned another $28M for a total of $93M, is a hit and Paramount are probably going to release something on a sequel real soon.
2. Guardians of the Galaxy- $41.5M/$175.9M
Tumbled 56% in the face of TMNT's strength, but at this point Marvel is probably through the moon with the success of their oddball team of heroes. The film has earned $313M worldwide at this point and given the amazing reviews it should be sticking around for awhile.
3. Into the Storm- $18M
Even though it kinda looks like something that should be on the SyFy Channel, the found-footage disaster flick Into the Storm performed well with $18M. The $50M film features no big stars and mostly earned comparisons to Twister, a movie older than most of its young cast.
4. The Hundred-Foot Journey- $11.1M
Not even the might of producers Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg could spice up the box office for The Hundred-Foot Journey. Helen Mirren stars as basically the only marketable draw, and it suffers from following so closely behind Jon Favreau's Chef which did exceptionally well. Internationally may be where the French culinary dramedy finds a wider audience but those numbers aren't available yet.
5. Lucy- $9.3M/$97.3M
6. Step Up All In- $6.5M
Step Up may be going "All In' for the fifth entry in the dance franchise but audiences weren't ready to make that commitment. Channing Tatum and his wife Jenna Dewan were basically the only ones who didn't return for this all-star jam set in Las Vegas, and the results were clearly felt as the $6.5M is the lowest debut yet. These movies make their money overseas, though, and $26M internationally is a pretty good start. Both thematically and financially this still feels like the end of the road.
7. Hercules- $5.7M/$63.4M
8. Get On Up- $5M/$22.9M
9. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes- $4.4M/$197.8M
10. Planes: Fire and Rescue- $2.4M/$52.9M

Review: 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Starring Megan Fox

Do you want to know just how much people still care about the Teenage Mutant Nina Turtles? When it was announced that Michael Bay would merely be producing a new film featuring everyone's favorite pizza-eating turtles it sent fans spiraling into Crazy Town. They couldn't believe how Bay, again only in a producer role, was going to ruin their childhood favorites. To be fair, we've seen what Bay did to Transformers and purists hate those movies with the heat of a thousand suns. But the worst thing that can happen is to have nobody really give a darn, and obviously that was not the case here. But Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which is a co-production between Bay's Platinum Dunes and Nickelodeon, isn't quite the disaster many expected it to be.

So that might not be the most ringing endorsement and probably won't get plastered in TV ads ("It's not so bad"--Travis Hopson, Punch Drunk Critics), but really that is the only criteria that matters when it comes to a movie like this. We already know it will be geared towards kids and the storyline will be ridiculous. Plus, let's be really honest here, the TMNT have undergone so many changes over the years that picking one version as definitive is sorta silly. After toying with the far-out notion of turning them into extraterrestrials, Bay and Liebesman have stuck to a fairly traditional take on the Turtles, one that longtime fans can appreciate if they don't mind the kiddie tone.

New York is under attack by an evil paramilitary organization known as the Foot Clan, led by a metal-clad ninja called Shredder. Of course, this having Bay's stamp of approval Shredder looks like the spawn of Optimus Prime and a cheese grater. On the tail of the secretive Foot is lowly TV reporter April O'Neil, played by former Bay frenemy Megan Fox. O'Neil can't get anyone at her network to believe her about the Foot, but she has a more difficult time convincing them she saw four giant vigilante turtles fighting back. Fortunately, she finds a willing ear in scientist Eric Sachs (William Fichtner), a friend and colleague of her late father. What she doesn't know is that Sachs is holding on to a dark secret, one that threatens her and Turtles' future.

Chances are you'll figure out where this plot, cobbled together from dozens of other blockbusters, is headed in the first ten minutes. But getting there does prove to be more fun than expected, largely due to a script that understands the relationship between the turtle siblings and Splinter (voiced by Tony Shalhoub), their overgrown rat sensei. Raphael is a hot-headed jerk, Donatello is a dork with a bo staff, Michelangelo is a laid back beach bum, while Leonardo (voiced by Johnny Knoxville) is the born leader. Conflicts arise amongst the group, particularly between Raph and Leo, while Mikey acts like a clown. What doesn't work so well is in the physical design of the Turtles. They are freaking massive, huge bulked-up creatures and it takes away from their supposed ninja abilities. Are we truly expected to believe they were able to be stealthy all these years fighting in the shadows? They're the size of Monster Trucks! It's absurd, and it clashes against the idea of them as teenagers. Granted, watching them zip through the sewers on skateboards, along with a healthy dose of childish fart humor, does a pretty good job of establishing their immaturity. Kids will eat that stuff up. Adults? Eh, maybe. They may also find Mikey's crush on April a little too mature (and weird) for kids to handle.

Through the alien war flick Battle: Los Angeles and Wrath of theTitans, Liebesman has established himself as a director whose style resembles that of Bay in just about every way. So it's no shock that visually this looks exactly like Transformers; big chaotic action that defies the laws of physics but looks amazing. The highlight is a 10-minute chase down a snowy slope with exploding trucks, Turtles on the half-shell, and Fox hanging for dear life. It looks amazing, although it doesn't make a lot of sense logistically. Why is there so much snow there but nowhere else in the city? We're probably not supposed to notice. Other plot holes will rear their ugly head, too, as the villains' main scheme makes absolutely no sense when revealed. This was a case of the writers' going too far in wanting a huge world-threatening finale when nothing we've seen up to that point suggests it should be the case. What you won't find is much in the way of emotion except in the brotherly camaraderie between the Turtles, and that is displayed mostly in broad strokes.

Despite their hulking size, the CGI Turtles look pretty good although the effects get a little sloppy during the faster fight sequences. Fox is back to her old bag of tricks as little more than a pretty face. She gets a lot of reaction shots and not much else to do, but at least she wears O'Neil's classic yellow jacket! Will Arnett gets a few laughs as her cameraman and potential suitor, Vernon Fenwick. Fichtner is so good at playing quirky, mannered bad guys that it's disappointing he's so boring here. Sachs just isn't written to be a funny character and it's a waste of what Fichtner does best. Somebody should have shown these guys Fichtner's Drive Angry highlight reel.

So you may not be shouting "Cowabunga" but at least it's not 'The Secretof the Ooze'. There aren't any Vanilla Ice cameos to speak of and that's automatically a good thing. As an introduction to younger audiences and an action-packed slice of nostalgia, you could do worse than Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Four Motion Posters Introduce the 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles'

The heroes on the half shell are headed back into theaters this summer courtesy of Michael Bay and Jonathan Liebesman's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Honestly, it doesn't look like anybody but Michael Bay had a hand in it but maybe we'll see more of Liebesman's influence in the final product. With the film now less than a month away, Paramount Pictures has released four awesome motion posters featuring Michaelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo, and Donatello in action.

Starring Megan Fox, Will Arnett, and William Fichtner, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens August 8th, and hopefully there will be a Turtle Van sighting.

New 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Trailer and Character Posters

This could turn out to be a lucrative summer for Michael Bay, and an ear-shattering one for moviegoers. This week Bay has Transformers: Age of Extinction in which giant metal robots will smash together while the world explodes around them. Then a couple of months later he'll be producing Jonathan Liebesman's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles where the famous "heroes in a half shell" will smash the bad guys while the world explodes around them.

The latest trailer comes with character posters of Turtle favorites Raphael, Donatello, Michaelangelo, and team leader Leonardo. Bay and Megan Fox have patched up their past differences enough that she stars as intrepid reporter April O'Neil. For the most part they seem to be sticking fairly close to the source material and not going off on any wild extraterrestrial origins as was the original plan.  There's even a clever little joke, probably added in one of the movie's many rewrites, making fun of the whole alien idea. Nice one, guys. And it seems like William Fichtner may not be donning the jacked-up Shredder costume after all? That or we're being thrown a serious bit of misdirection.

Overall this looks like what a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie from Michael Bay and Jonathan Liebesman (let's not forget he directed Battle: Los Angeles) should look like, although the hip hop-infused second half of the trailer is a mess. And hey, where is the pizza?? Surely there will be a pizza chain tie-in somewhere? The TMNT strike theaters on August 8th.

New Posters for 'Guardians of the Galaxy' and 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles'

The two quirkiest movies of the summer are also the ones with the least amount of certainty.  Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy and the Michael Bay-produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are hoping recognition and nostalgia can carry them through a tough blockbuster season. Will it work for either film? Only time will tell, but for now we've got some cool new posters to consider.

First up is this image of intergalactic pals Rocket Raccoon and Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy, which hits theaters on August 1st. The characters are voiced by Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel, and there's a good chance this is the only time you'll get to see those two in the same movie so better enjoy it. Although the team itself is mostly unknown outside of the comic book fandom, these are two of Marvel's most popular B-level characters and it looks like director James Gunn has pulled out all of the stops to get them right. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Benicio Del Toro, Lee Pace, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, John C. Reilly, and more make up arguably Marvel's best cast yet.

We also have a handful of character pieces for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, featuring Raphael, Leonardo, Donatello, Michaelangelo, and their armored enemy, Shredder, who will be played by the very-American William Fichtner. But changing Shredder's nationality is a pretty small detail when one considers the turtles may not even be teenaged, as was suspected months ago when the film was simply titled Ninja Turtles. Images from the toy line show smaller teen versions of the Turtles, followed by adult-aged ones that resemble what we've seen in the film. Is it a big deal? Probably not, and at least they do seem to be mutants and not aliens. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens August 8th.

Latest 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Trailer Offers A Little New Footage

Platinum Dunes have ducked out of their shell in showing us their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but only just a little. They do seem to be keeping something under their sleeves, perhaps holding out for closer to the film's actual release. The latest trailer offers up little in the way of new footage, although it does give us a different look at the Turtles themselves and their nemesis, Shredder, played to scene-chewing effect by William Fichtner.

Much of the attention has focused on Megan Fox and Will Arnett as April O'Neil and Vern Fenwick, respectively, and that continues in this footage. They play the human characters who join the Turtles' fight to save New York City from Shredder and his Foot Clan. You'd probably have a hard time convincing someone this was directed by Jonathan Liebesman rather than Michael Bay, who is merely on board as a producer.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens August 8th.

Turtles Get Armed in First 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Poster

A couple of weeks removed from the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trailer, and so far the reaction to it has been mixed, to say the least. Perhaps that's why Jonathan Liebesman and Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes recently went back in for some reshoots on the nostalgia flick, which kind of looks like Transformers with a few Ninja Turtles dropped in. Regardless, it's guaranteed to be one of the biggest movies of the summer, and the marketing push continues with the release of four new posters

The images are pretty simple, showing the Turtles grasping their respective weapons: Donatello and his bo staff, Leonardo and his katana, Raphael and his sai, and Michelangelo wielding a pair of nunchucks. Megan Fox stars as intrepid reporter April O'Neil, with Will Arnett as her camera man, Johnny Knoxville as the voice of Leonardo, and Tony Shalhoub voicing Splinter. Even Whoopi Goldberg is getting in on the fun in a small role.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens August 8th 2014.

Johnny Knoxville and Tony Shalhoub Voicing Leonardo and Splinter in 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles'

The trailer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is still fresh in our minds, and already changes are taking place. Megan Fox, Will Arnett, and the rest of the cast have been called back for reshoots on the Jonathan Liebesman-directed film, and now the voice work is being shored up with the additions of Johnny Knoxville and Tony Shalhoub.

Deadline reports Knoxville has come on to voice Leonardo, while Shalhoub (Pain & Gain, Monk) will take on the role of Splinter. Pete Ploszek and Danny Woodburn did all of the motion capture work during filming, but they were never promised the voice roles. Obviously, Michael Bay and Co. felt like a change was necessary, so enjoy having your Leonardo sound like a Jackass.

The rest of the Turtles cast remains intact. Noel Fisher is still Michaelangeo, Alan Ritchson is Raphael, and Jeremy Howard is Donatello. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens August 8th.

The Turtles are Back in First 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Trailer

"Heroes are not born, they are created".

If you need example of how deep the love for Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles runs, just look at the boiling rage over the whole "Turtle-Gate" fiasco. When Michael Bay announced a new Ninja Turtles (that was title at one point, by the way) film to be directed by Jonathan Liebesman, it was all about extraterrestrials who weren't teenage, ninjas, or even turtles. Obviously, fans were a little miffed at seeing their childhood heroes reimagined in such a way, and Bay went back to the drawing board with a more traditional interpretation. While skepticism continues, the first trailer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has just debuted, giving our first real look at the heroes on the half shell.

Megan Fox stars as the Turtles' intrepid reporter friend April O'Neil, with Will Arnett as cameraman Vernon Fenwick, and William Fichtner as Shredder.  Alan Ritchson, Noel Fisher, Pete Ploszek, and Jeremy Howard did the motion-capture work to become the Turtles, but based on this they still resemble the suits worn in the 1990 film. There were some early stories saying the fighting style would be based on The Raid: Redemption and other martial arts flicks but none of that is obvious here. Instead, it looks like typical Turtles kung-fu hijinks.

Thoughts? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens August 8th.

First Look at Megan Fox and Will Arnett in 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles'

CinemaCon is underway right now, and it was Paramount that kicked things off in a big way with trailers for Michael Bay's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Transformers: Age of Extinction, and Brett Ratner's Hercules starring Dwayne Johnson. Of those three films it's the TMNT that have remained completely hidden from us, but Collider was able to snag this first image...which comes with exactly zero turtles in it.

While there may not be any turtles, it does show Megan Fox as their reporter pal April O'Neil and Will Arnett as her colleague, Vernon Fenwick. They look pretty astounded by something, possibly a butt-kicking turtle carrying a bo staff? Who knows? But look closely and you'll see Fox is sporting April's classic yellow outfit.

Directed by Jonathan Liebesman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens August 8th 2014. Look for the trailer to debut in front of Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4th.

Get an Early Look at the Final 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Designs

Now that Michael Bay and Jonathan Liebesman's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has ditched that whole extraterrestrial idea and gone a more traditional route, the only concern left was how the turtles would look. There was some freaking out over a Halloween costume based on the upcoming film, but...seriously folks, did you really think they'd look like something a kid wears while trick or treating? Of course not. Now we're getting a better idea of how they'll really appear, courtesy of some production art and maquettes.

The maquettes, which may look like toys but are really built for the production, give us a look at Leonardo and Donatello, who will be played by Pete Ploszek and Jeremy Howard, plus a bandaged Raphael played Alan Ritchson. The art gives us a look at the updated design for Shredder, which will have William Fichtner under the mask. All of these are pretty much in line with earlier rumors and closely resemble the original designs with a few minor tweaks.

Co-starring Megan Fox as April O'Neill, Noel Fisher as Michaelangelo, Will Arnett as Vernon Fenwick, and Danny Woodburn as Master Splinter, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens August 8th 2014. Check out the images below. [CBM]
