'The Prince' Skull Rocking Second Trailer!

Part of me thinks I shouldn't be as hyped by this trailer as I am, maybe it's the nostalgia of seeing Jason Patric in a leading role and John Cusack in all black ala Grosse Point Blank, whatever the cause I've kicked this one up to seriously anticipating. There seems to be quite a cast, even if they're not exactly the Varsity squad of Hollywood with the two I mentioned, obviously Bruce Willis, but also 50-cent...call it what you will but I don't mind the guy as an actor. The trailer gives us a good look at a pretty standard "Retired assassin/government agent/superspy brought back into his old world to save loved one" plot, but it has some serious style to it. Will it be a ground breaking film? Probably not, but I have a strong feeling it will be a fun two hours. Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think!

Bruce Willis Goes Bad in Trailer for 'The Prince' with John Cusack and 50 Cent

It doesn't happen often, but you know those times when it seems like Bruce Willis hasn't had a movie in theaters in awhile? Well, those are the times he's busy making crappy bargain bin genre flicks alongside 50 Cent. Last year we learned of another one the unusual duo was teaming up for, and that movie was a crime thriller titled The Prince. It sounded like a cheap Taken knock-off then, and the trailer now basically just confirms.

Directed by Brian A. Miller and starring the two most bored actors in the world: John Cusack and Jason Patric, the film sees Willis as the bad guy this time, kidnapping the daughter of a mechanic with a criminal past. Of course the father has to use his particular set of skills, which apparently is the art of putting audiences to sleep with disinterested line deliveries, to get his daughter back.  Also co-starring in the film is Rain, who you may recognize as that guy from Ninja Assassin. Or maybe you won't recognize him from that. Forget it.

The Prince hits theaters (!!!) and VOD on August 22nd.

Review: 'The Outsider' Starring Craig Fairbrass, James Caan, and Jason Patric

As far as poor man's versions of Steven Soderbergh's The Limeygo, one can probably do worse than The Outsider. This economical machismo flick is apparently a labor of love for star and co-writer Craig Fairbrass, a man's man old school action hero in the Charles Bronson mold, and one can tell he put a lot of time and effort into it. The passion he and a venerable group of veteran actors bring to this very familiar shoot 'em up/beat 'em up film are enough to make it worth a spin for genre fans, even if there isn't anything truly special about it.

Fairbrass plays Lex Walker, a fish-out-of-water tough guy Brit on the hunt for his missing daughter in America. He's a mercenary working a lucrative gig in Afghanistan when he learns his daughter has been murdered, only to arrive on our shores to find that the corpse is that of her best friend. Like a hot knife through butter, Walker cuts his way through hordes of mysterious bad guys to find the truth of his daughter's disappearance, staying a step ahead of a detective (Jason Patric) hot on his trail. James Caan, still intimidating at the ripe old age of 73, makes for a particularly nasty villain and the boss of Walker's daughter. Caan and Fairbrass make for a brutish pair when together, but they give the film a grittiness that is appealing...for a time, anyway.

Co-written and directed by Brian A. Miller, the story starts off in a way many of these straight-forward vengeance flicks tend to. Staying lean and mean has its benefits as Fairbrass is clear to snarl his way through dialogue that doesn't require much from him, while cracking a few skulls and engaging in a few shoot-outs. But with the introduction of his daughter's friends (one of whom is played by Shannon Elizabeth, oddly enough) and a convoluted twist involving credit fraud, the film's reach far exceeds its grasp. Miller's grasp of action sequences is questionable, relying so heavily on shaky cam aesthetics that it's hard to tell who Fairbrass is beating up. This is a film that requires a more conventional approach to match its simple ambitions. Fairbrass, who has appeared in movies alongside Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham in the past, is hardly expendable and makes for a believable purveyor of violence. The Outsider doesn't have much in the way of style, but there's something to admire in the way it plows through like a bull in a china shop.

Willem Dafoe Joins 'John Wick'; Michael Sheen In 'Madding Crowd'; Jason Patric Enters 'Hotel 33'

* Willem Dafoe will be both a friend and foe to Keanu Reeves in the hit man flick, John Wick. Reeves stars as the title character, a retired assassin who tracks down the men responsible for stealing his 1969 Mustang and killing his dog, with Dafoe as his former best friend and fellow contract killer who puts a bounty on his head. [Deadline]

* Filming is underway on Thomas Vinterberg's adaptation of Far from the Madding Crowd, with  Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts, Juno Temple, and Tom Sturridge already on board. Rounding out the cast now is Michael Sheen in the role of William Boldwood, one of the three men courting the beautiful Bathsheba Everdene. David Nicholls (One Day, Starter for 10) adapted the screenplay.

* Back in May we learned that Nicolas Cage was set to star in writer/director Kellie Madison's horror, Hotel 33. That deal has since fallen through, and now Cage has been replaced by Jason Patric. Quite a step down, to be perfectly honest. He'll play the detective investigating the disappearance of a friend in the same hotel where 33 people disappeared back in 1953. [Variety]
