Review: 'Sex Tape' Starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel

The last time we saw Cameron Diaz (ignoring The Other Woman because it's terrible) she was straddling a car while Javier Bardem watched in awe/horror in The Counselor. She's shaken her butt in two Charlie's Angels movies and used male body fluids for hair gel. Basically, raunch is not something she's afraid of in the least, but what will surprise those expecting her new comedy Sex Tape to be full of it, they'll find it's more sweet than salacious yet still very funny.

Reuniting with Bad Teacher director Jake Kasdan and co-star Jason Segel, Diaz is the star of this show because, like in the world of adult entertainment, nobody cares about the dudes. She plays Annie, a married mother of two who is trying desperately to figure out where the passion in her marriage has gone. Recounting her sexual history with husband Jay, they started off hot and heavy in college, thinking they'd retain that physical desire through pregnancy and marriage. The flashbacks, which feature Diaz and Segel distractingly aged down, are hilarious for the novelty and frequency of their characters' sexual acts. But years later the romance is gone and they can barely remember what sex is supposed to be like.

She's a blogger who writes about motherhood while he has a nebulous job at a radio station, and their seemingly disparate careers collide in ways neither could predict. When a major corporation agrees to buy Annie's blog to turn into a wholesome family destination, it's a cause for celebration. Sending the kids away for the night, she dresses up like Roller Girl from Boogie Nightsand engages in an epic 3-hour ("That's the length of the movie Lincoln! You did the full Lincoln!") sex romp with Jay in which they do every position in ‘Joy of Sex’. And as part of this renewed coital vigor, aided by a healthy dose of tequila, she also suggests videotaping the night. She demands he erase the footage afterwards, but of course he forgets and this is where his job screws things up even further. Jay has these amazing playlists stored on his IPad and is constantly getting new ones and giving away the old IPads as gifts so others can have the same music. But what he didn't realize is their sex tape would also be synced and sent out to all of the old IPads he gave away. Of course this is stupidly far-fetched but Jay is just enough of a moron that we can accept it and the wild goose chase that follows.

For a couple of reasons Sex Tape reminded me of the first couple of National Lampoon's Vacation flicks. Jay's forgetting to erase the tape was a call back to Clark Griswold's doing the same to his wife, and her image ended up plastered all over Europe as a result. Their increasingly zany journey to collect every single IPad ever given away is one that we know is doomed for failure and significant amounts of property damage. Accompanied by their horny best friends (Rob Corddry and Ellie Kemper), Annie and Jay's weirdest stop involves a run-in with the publishing guru who wants to buy her blog. Turns out he's not so wholesome (his collection of Disney-themed art is creepy as Hell) as his public persona would suggest, and as played by Rob Lowe it's probably the most inspired sequence with drugs, rabid attack dogs, and more. It's basically the centerpiece scene and the script by Segel, Nicholas Stoller, and Kate Angelo jams a lot of craziness into it. Pacing becomes an issue as a result, with the energy dipping substantially as a crop of useless subplots emerge to pad out a thin narrative. We get the central message within the first five minutes; marriage is tough and maintaining passion is even tougher, and it would be great if the issue was tackled with more of an edge.  Yes, there are glimpses of nudity and kinky sexual acts in the beginning but once that's over the film is fairly inoffensive. Fortunately, Diaz is versatile enough to shine no matter what, and she's really been hitting her stride as of late. Segel, looking gaunt now that he's gotten into shape, doesn't get as many laugh lines as Diaz but he's got impeccable chemistry with her that elevates the humor a great a deal.

Sex Tape has plenty of laughs but is less like a racy secret rendezvous than an enjoyable date night at the movies.

Cameron Diaz Has a Sexy Pair of Roller Skates in First 'Sex Tape' Clip

Jason Segel is used to getting naked on screen, flashing Kristen Bell with some full frontal in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, but for Cameron Diaz it's something she's never done before. That will apparently change when Sex Tape hits theaters later this month, and to whet our appetites for it the very first clip has been released. The scene shows Diaz doing her best Roller Girl impression as she tries seduce Segel for a roll in the hay. They play a married couple trying to spice up their relationship by making a sex tape, only to have it upload to the cloud and sent to their friends and family.

Check out the sexually charged clip below. Sex Tape is directed by Jake Kasdan and opens July 18th.

Red Band Trailer! Time to Bring The Nasty With 'Sex Tape'!

Move over Baseball, it's time for the new national past time, the sex tape! Now, I know this new Cameron Diaz/Jason Segel comedy is geared for laughs...but seriously it brings up a scary situation. I don't know if it's just me but that "Automatically stream" option in the IPhone is a constant button of dread. Anyone that's read this site for any amount of time knows that my sense of humor trends quite low-brow. Needless to say this trailer had me cracking up, as someone that's not exactly a fan of Cameron Diaz that's actually saying alot. Basically what we are looking at is an everyday couple that gets drunk and recreates The Joy of Sex for their own viewing pleasure. Remember that auto stream option I mentioned? Yeah, well Jason Segal's character didn't. As they sleep off the liquor and sex their Kardashian special is uploaded to the cloud for all of the world to see. What follows is the pointless quest to eradicate their romp from the interwebs. As I'll always disclaim, it's hard to tell from a trailer, but my early prediction is two ...um, thumbs...up. New U.K. Trailer for 'Sex Tape' with Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel

What happens when an unassuming R-rated comedy like Bad Teacher scores over $200M? The most obvious idea for Sony would be a sequel, and we already know that's on the way after the TV spinoff tanked. That may still be a ways off but the trio of Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel, and director Jake Kasdan have filled that time with Sex Tape, and here's the latest trailer.

Segel and Diaz play a bored married couple who try to jumpstart their sex life by making a sex tape. Why doesn't she just straddle the car like in The Counselor? That would spice things up real quick. Anyway, when the footage goes missing and winds up in the hands of everybody they know, the duo race to try and get it back.

Also starring Ellie Kemper, Rob Corddry, and Jack Black, Sex Tape opens July 18th.

Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel Do the Full Lincoln in New 'Sex Tape' Trailer

This weekend Cameron Diaz will star in the girl power comedy The Other Woman, playing a mistress to the married Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. The discovery of his cheating leads to a bunch of silly antics and improbable situations. But after that, Diaz will again find herself in the midst of sexual tomfoolery, only it will be with Jason Segel in Sex Tape.

A red band trailer was released awhile ago, but now a tamer green band version has been released. Diaz and Segel play a married couple who try to spice up their relationship by making a sex tape, only to have it go public and cause all sorts of problems.

Directed by Jake Kasdan with Ellie Kemper and Rob Corddry co-starring, Sex Tape opens July 25th.

Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz Make a 'Sex Tape' in First Red Band Trailer

It's probably not a coincidence that on the night Jason Segel wraps up the ninth and final season of How I Met Your Mother, Sony drops the first red band trailer for his new film, Sex Tape. Reuniting with his Cameron Diaz and director Jake Kasdan from the $200M-grossing Bad Teacher, the film centers on a married couple looking to break out of their romantic rut by making a sex tape, only to have the private footage end up where others can easily find it. To save their reputation and public humiliation, they race to reclaim the video before it can be shared with the world.

Also starring Rob Lowe, Ellie Kemper, and Rob Corddry, Sex Tape hits play on July 25th.

Cameron Diaz Rocks Roller Skates in First Look at 'Sex Tape'

Remember that scene in National Lampoon's European Vacation when Clark loses the tape of his wife prancing around their house naked, and she justfiably freaks out? Well, that's sort of like the plot of Sex Tape, which reunites the Bad Teacher team of Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel, and director Jake Kasdan.

The first image from the (likely) R-rated comedy has been released, and it kind of looks like Segel and Diaz are reenacting a scene from Boogie Nights with Diaz in the role of Roller Girl. They play a long-married couple who are trying to get back their romantic spark, and after an adventurous evening they discover the tape they made has gone missing. That sends them on a road trip to locate the missing footage's whereabouts.

Co-starring Jack Black, Sex Tape unwinds on July 25th.

Jason Segel and Jesse Eisenberg to Lead James Ponsoldt's 'The End of the Tour'

After a pair of alcoholism dramas in Smashed and The Spectacular Now, James Ponsoldt is moving in a different direction. He's still attempting to find someone to play Hillary Clinton in Rodham, a biopic targeted for the presidential elections, and now he's planning to another true-life account, that of late author David Foster Wallace in The End of the Tour. And the project is off to a good start with Jason Segel and Jesse Eisenberg taking the lead roles.

Segel will play Wallace, the Infinite Jest author who committed suicide in 2008, while Eisenberg is Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky. Donald Marguiles will adapt Lipsky's book Although Of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself: A Road Trip with David Foster Wallace, which comprises a number of interviews he conducted with Wallace while on a 5-day road trip during the Infinite Jest book tour. Professional competition and jealousy bubbles up between the two as they discuss the pros and cons of celebrity.

While there are definitely some humorous moments between the quarreling duo, which Segel and Eisenberg should have no problem recreating, it'll be interesting to see how Segel tackles the dramatic elements. He's shown flashes of being a more well-rounded actor recently but he's never taken on something quite like this. Thankfully this won't disrupt the Rodham schedule any as The End of the Tour should begin filming next February. [TheWrap]

Common to 'Run All Night'; Jason Segel Joins Syrup Heist Film; 'Annie' Adds Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje

 * Rapper-turned-actor Common (Just Wright) will join Liam Neeson, Joel Kinnaman, and Ed Harris in Run All Night, the action-thriller from director Jaume Collet-Serra. Neeson will put his particular set of skills to the test as a mob hitman who must protect his son while defeating his former boss in a single night. Common will play the trusted killer who must take Neeson down. [THR]

* Jason Segel will team with Horrible Bosses director Seth Gordon for an untitled heist comedy based on the true case of a major syrup theft in Quebec. The script by Family Guy writer Chris Sheridan is taken from the August 2012 story about the theft of 10,000 barrels of syrup from the Quebec International Strategic Reserve, with the crooks smuggling the pancake topper across the U.S. border. Seriously. You can read about it here.

*  Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) is the latest to join Will Gluck's Annie remake, which has just seen its release date bumped up a week to December 18th. He joins Quvenzhane Wallis, Jamie Foxx, Rose Byrne, Cameron Diaz, and Bobby Cannavale in the big screen version of the hit Broadway musical, playing Nash, the tough but lovable bodyguard and driver for Benjamin Stacks and Annie's close friend. Cameron Diaz may make 'Sex Tape' with Jason Segel

Don't let the suggestive title fool you, there won't be any TMZ special reports to come out of this story. Cameron Diaz scored one of the biggest hits of her career in 2011 with Bad Teacher, one of a string of R-rated comedies that dominated the box office. The film, directed by Jake Kasdan and co-starring Jason Segel, earned over $200M, enough that it's pretty much a no-brainer for Sony to bring all of the pieces back together again for another project.

Diaz is in talks to join the raunchy comedy, Sex Tape, which Segel has been attached to for a couple of years. Kasdan came aboard a year ago, and Diaz's name has been mentioned for the other lead role for awhile, but it's only now that a deal appears to be imminent. Kate Angelo's Black List script follows a married couple who decide to get away from the kids for awhile and spice up their love life by making a sex tape, which promptly disappears.

It's been a busy year for Diaz as she'll be seen next opposite Colin Firth in a remake of Gambit, then later in Ridley Scott's The Counselor. Next up she'll begin filming on The Other Woman, which stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Leslie Mann, and Kate Upton.  [TheWrap]

Jake Kasdan to re-team with Jason Segel for 'Sex Tape'

That headline could read a little awkward for Jason Segel and Jake Kasdan, who last worked together on Bad Teacher, one of last year's slew of successful R-rated comedies. The two will pair up again, not for any sort of bedroom hijinks, but for a comedy under the provocative title of Sex Tape which Kasdan will direct.

First announced last year when Sony was hoping for Segel to re-team with Forgetting Sarah Marshall director Nicholas Stoller, the film follows a married couple who decide to get a little frisky and make a sex tape, only to wake up the next day and find it missing. Reese Witherspoon had been circling the co-lead, but nothing has been heard on that score in awhile.

This already sounds like a potential hit in the making, especially with Segel involved and the raunchy subject matter.  Of some concern is the script by Kate Angelo, writer of the cringe worthy Jennifer Lopez "comedy The Back-Up Plan.  [Variety]

Sure Shots: Dark Shadows; Jason Segel; Ben Affleck/George Clooney

* Eva Green has been cast in Dark Shadows, Tim Burton's adaptation of the quirky 1960's gothic series. Johnny Depp has long been attached as Barnaby Collins, and Green will be the witch who transforms him into a vampire. I haven't been able to get worked up over this for some reason, which is why I've barely written about it. I'm bored of Burton and Depp, and never paid any attention to Dark Shadows.

* Jason Segel(Forgetting Sarah Marshall) is set to play an undercover cop in...well, Undercover Cop, based on the true story of a "former cop that infilitrated the New Jersey criminal scene". Set in the 1980s, the film is produced by Steve Zaillian(American Gangster), but it's described as a comedy so I'm expecting something along the lines of Beverly Hills Cop.

* Talk about weird, and a hell of a departure from The Town and Gone Baby Gone. Ben Affleck's next flick is shaping up to be Argo, based on the "true" story of a CIA operation to set up a fake movie production as a means of rescuing Americans during the Iran Hostage Crisis".  If it sounds like some far out The Men Who Stare at Goats stuff, that could be because it's being produced by the same folks from that film, George Clooney and Grant Heslov.

Awesome 'I Love You, Man' mini-sequel! Sydney and Peter meet Rush!!

It took me a few viewings to really learn to love I Love You, Man. One of the reasons why was the way Peter(Paul Rudd) and Sydney(Jason Segel) raved over their love for the Canadian rock band, Rush. In fact it borders on obsessive infatuation than anything else.

Well it looks like the two characters are still at the forefront of the minds of Rudd, Segel, and director Jon Hamburg because they just shot a hilarious 6 minute mini-sequel which sees the two best buds finally meet their long time idols!  Check it below, courtesy of Funny or Die!  Kinda makes me want a real sequel. What do you think?

Review: I Love You, Man

Most quotable film of the year, eh? And what quotes would those be, exactly? "Pop a squizno"? "Slammin' da bass"? Hardly inspired stuff, which is a shame because there is so much here to like. I Love You, Man looks like another one of those Judd Apatow-type flicks with the dorky manchild forced to grow up sooner than he's ready for. But unlike those films, the lead character here, played by the usually solid Paul Rudd is already a man with a girl. He's where most Apatow lead characters are aspiring to finish. The problem here is that he needs to open himself up more and perhaps be a little bit like those other characters in order to be happy.

The problem is that Peter(Paul Rudd) has never been much for hangin' out with guys. He's always gotten along better with women, which to me seems pretty friggin' ideal, but when he finds himself planning the wedding to his ill-named fiance Zooey, the topic of his lack of guy friends smacks them right in the face. Peter has no best man. Peter embarks on a series of awkward "man dates"(which already sounds like a euphemism) in order to find a best friend. Of course these go miserably. That is until Peter runs into Sydney Fife at the open house for Lou Ferigno's home, of which Peter is having trouble selling. Sydney is a master observer. He spots the little things about people that others simply don't notice. He's brash, somewhat harsh, but appears to be a genuinely good guy. He and Peter hit it off and soon become buds over their love of 80's rock band Rush and their love of fish tacos. As the two begin spending more time with each other, this causes inevitable conflict between Peter and Zooey, as she sees him less, and when she does she doesn't always recognize the man she loves.

Director and writer John Hamburg, who previously wrote one of the better "buddy" films in Safe Men really has a knack for crafting witty interplay between dudes. Here he also shows his strength for crafting strong, realistic characters. Some of his scenes, particularly between Peter and Zooey, hit strikingly close to home. I'm thinking about one scene where the two argue about why it's okay for her to divulge their every sexual encounter to her friends, but Peter is in the wrong if he does the same. I've had that conversation, and it's infuriating. I especially liked Jaime Pressley as Zooey's best friend, Denise, who's stuck in a verbally combative relationship of her own.

But the stand out here is Jason Segel. I never thought I'd dig this guy, seeing as I hated him in Undeclared all those years ago and didn't dig him in Freaks and Geeks, either. But he won me over in Forgetting Sarah Marshall last year and here he literally steals every scene from the woefully miscast Paul Rudd. Sydney isn't just the typical a-hole best buddy with no regard for the people around him. This could've very easily been a one-note role, but Segel turns Sydney into by far the most likable character in the film. Even when he's giving the most disturbing toast at a dinner party ever, you just can't hate him. He carries this thing into something worth watching, because otherwise I was going out of my mind with things that annoyed me.

Paul Rudd is terrible here. And it's not completely his fault. As good as Hamburg is at the dialogue between pairings, he's awful when it's obvious he's going for a joke. Peter's clumsiness around guys is exaggerated to a ridiculous degree, to the point of being unbelievable. There are a couple of scenes between Rudd and Segel, in which the scene demands it be played straight up, no going for laughs. I'm thinking in particular of the scene where Peter and Sydney have their big fallout. Segel plays it straight, but Rudd didn't. Ruined it. Paul Rudd is a favorite of mine, but his weaknesses are glaring here. He can't not be funny. I don't think he knows how to dial it back, and it's probably why he's best suited to supporting roles or roles where more isn't demanded of him. Also, Rashida Jones a Zooey? Pretty, but can't act. Andy Samburg, the SNL vet who everybody loves right now for whatever reason? Nice hair, dude. Can't act. Totally unbelievable. Stop trying to look cool in everything. Jon Favreau was okay, but I've never been able to buy him as a tough guy. And don't even get me started on the wasted talents of Jane Curtain and JK Simmons. Why were they even there? Not every bit works, like the subplot with Lou Ferigno or the gay guy stalking Peter. It's all just filler, and adds little to nothing in the ways of laughs.

There are some genuinely funny and inspired moments here, like Sydney's "jackoff station" which was hilarious because...well, every guy has one whether they wanna admit it or not. Except me, of course. But there just isn't enough here that made stood out for me other than Segel, and if I had to compare this falls way short of what Sarah Marshall achieved.

6/10
