Batman could Appear in 'Suicide Squad' as Prelude to Solo Movie

Why anybody completely trusts Latino Review after that whole Spider-Man/Marvel thing from last week is unclear, but the site is now switching their attention to DC's Suicide Squad film. The anti-villain flick has undergone something of a seismic shift with the loss of Tom Hardy,  which they say was largely due to creative differences involving his character, Rick Flag. Seems he won't be as prominent to the film as expected, and now there's more info on exactly who could be taking center stage.

Apparently it will be Jared Leto's Joker, Will Smith's Deadshot, Margot Robbie's Enchantress, and possibly even Ben Affleck's Batman who will be at the center of the story. Beware of spoilers from here on out! Turns out Harley Quinn and Deadshot would meet fairly early on in the midst of another job, and that's when they wind up captured and part of Amanda Waller's Suicide Squad. They would basically be  the lead characters, which makes  sense given that it's Smith and Robbie, while Joker is basically a looming evil presence. Based on this it would make sense for Hardy to drop out seeing as how he wouldn't be one of the headliners.

So how does Batman fit into all this? There are two different theories going around right now, and the one from Latino Review is that Affleck's Batman is"only mentioned and shown on camera footage" by Waller. The other, far more interesting rumor comes from Forbes who claim Batman will have an in-story scene involving Joker's escape from prison. This would set up a Dark Knight solo film inspired by The Dark Knight Returns with Joker as the villain.

What it sounds like is that Batman, who apparently will cameo in another unspecified DC film, is being positioned as the overarching character for the entire franchise, kindof like Nick Fury is for the Marvel movies. Batman will obviously star in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and will have a major role in the two upcoming Justice League films. Suicide Squad opens August 5th 2016 and co-stars Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevingne, and possibly Jake Gyllenhaal in Hardy's former role.

'Gone Girl' Trio David Fincher, Ben Affleck, and Gillian Flynn to Remake 'Strangers On A Train'

Gone Girl was a pretty brutal look at male/female relationships, specifically between married couples, and it featured one Hell of a psychopathic character in "Amazing" Amy Dunne. Now three of the principal players in the adaptation, David Fincher, Ben Affleck, and writer Gillian Flynn, are embarking on another classic tale of murderous spouses by remaking Alfred Hitchcock's Strangers On A Train.

According to Deadline, the trio will reunite for a remake titled simply Strangers. Pay no attention to other sites saying it's titled Strangers On A Plane because there's no truth to it. The story, which is based on the Patricia Highsmith novel Hitchcock turned into a great 1951 film, is in similar thematic territory as Gone Girl. The updated story has Affleck as an actor, in the midst of an Oscar campaign, who gets involved with a wealthy sociopath when his private plane breaks down. Affleck's character is bored of his marriage and wants a divorce, and he strikes a deal with the sociopath to exchange murders so that neither one gets caught. Fincher will direct Affleck based on a screenplay by Flynn.

Warner Bros. is again backing this one, having made a mint on Gone Girl, and the plan is for shooting to take place between Affleck's directing of Live by Night and his role in superhero role in Justice League.

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck Eyed for Steve Jobs Biopic as Leonardo DiCaprio Exits

When David Fincher decided against directing Sony's anticipated Steve Jobs biopic the long-developing one penned by Aaron Sorkin, Danny Boyle emerged as his more than capable replacement. And with him came a rumor that he may be teaming with his star of The Beach, Leonardo DiCaprio, who was eying the role of the late Apple founder. But this wasn't long after DiCaprio claimed to be taking a break from acting after working at steadily for years without one. And it turns out DiCaprio will take that breather and won't star in the Steve Jobs film after all, but Sony already has their list of big names to take over.

According to THR, Sony's wishlist includes all of the names every studio wants for every project: Matt Damon, Christian Bale, Ben Affleck, and Bradley Cooper. Bale was the one Fincher really wanted for the film initially, so maybe that will give him an edge over the rest. Everybody on this list are pretty busy, though, and it's possible nobody has room to do it.

What this shows is that Sony really wants to get a top tier talent to play Jobs, perhaps so the film doesn't meet the same lukewarm fate of the Ashton Kutcher-led film from last year.

Review: David Fincher's 'Gone Girl' starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike

It's easy to see why the world has fallen so in love with Gillian Flynn's best-selling novel, Gone Girl. Salacious and twisted, with clever jabs at our TMZ-fueled celebrity culture, it's also a pretty clever mystery full of dark corners in the human psyche ready to be explored. And if there's one director who explores those dark places better than any other it would be David Fincher, who takes Flynn's guilty pleasure of a novel and shapes it into an absorbing crime tale that works whether you know the twists or not.

It shouldn't be surprising that Fincher would take on a project like this, although some may wish he'd go back to heftier material. He's spent the last few years turning the printed works of others into movies that are uniquely his own. Nobody else could have done what he did with The Social Network, and his take on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo resembles the Swedish version in name only. Gone Girl is at its core a crime procedural, a genre that doesn't typically demand the visual flourish of a filmmaker like Fincher. The care and precision, the dark and foreboding undercurrents racing through every moment, are what Fincher brings that another director may have taken for granted.

Flynn penned the screenplay herself and, for better or worse, she keeps most of it intact. Ben Affleck, delivering the kind of cagey, mature performance we haven't seen from him since Hollywoodland, plays Nick Dunne, a bar owner stuck in a terrible marriage with Amy (Rosamund Pike). On their fifth wedding anniversary he's sitting at his bar having a drink and chatting with his sister Margo (Carrie Coon). Asked to think about the marriage's future, he returns home to discuss it only to find the door open, the living room a shambles, and Amy gone. The police are called and this is one case guaranteed to get a lot of attention. Amy is better known to the public as "Amazing Amy", the main character in a fictional book series loosely based on her childhood. Detective Rhonda Boney (Kim Dickens) is called in, the media descend on the small Missouri town, and it isn't long before Nick is suspect numero uno. He doesn't do much to help his situation, either.

And that's really all you should know going in because Gone Girl goes to some unexpected...heck, let's just call them bizarre....places. If you've read the book you will find the film is everything you wanted it to be. Otherwise this is a film you'll want to go in to knowing as little as possible, and prepare to hold on to the armrests for the wild turns it's going to take. A lot of this stuff is just straight up trashy and totally absurd, but once those moments come it's refreshing how deeply all involved are committed to it. It can only work if the mystery is worth us investing in, and Flynn does a masterful job peeling back the layers of these characters in a controlled manner. We're never fully aware of everything that's going on, what each character is really doing, or who we should be trusting.

Flynn has said her goal with Gone Girl was to explore the dynamics of a long-term marriage and the look she provides here is a cynical, acidic one. Marriage isn't so much about love as it is about power, and whoever holds it lords over the other, intentionally or unintentionally. Basically, men and women rarely present their true selves to the opposite sex, and marriage is basically two people struggling to maintain their facade. Over the course of years that will obviously become an impossibility, and at least in the case of Gone Girl it turns pretty ugly. There's a lot of meat there to be chewed on, and while Flynn doesn't really dig into it the way she could have it's an intriguing idea to consider after the credits roll. She also takes time to plant a foot in the butt of Nancy Grace and our media's love of turning tragedy into a cause celebre. But she also uses that to explore our country's rather pathetic abundance of celebrity lawyers who, in the wake of the O.J. Simpson trial, are famous for defending those the public has pre-judged to be guilty.

Visually this may be one of Fincher's most impressive efforts, adding texture to what could have looked like an episode of Law & Order. There's a shadowy pall hanging over every scene, even in some of the happier flashbacks, as if teasing the pain that is sure to come. In one beautifully haunting moment that is pure Fincher, Nick and Amy share a perfectly romantic kiss while a cloud of sugar drifts beautifully around them like snow in a light wind. Reteaming with Fincher on the score is Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor who largely stay out of the way this time. It's perfect, actually, for a film that demands its characters remain ambiguous. Overbearing musical cues would give away more than we need to know.

While some continue to pick apart Affleck as an actor he's only been doing the best work of his career over the last few years. In Gone Girl he's brilliant in the less flashy of the two main roles, called upon to keep his emotions close to the vest except in rare occasions. Nick is a jerk, but the kind used to getting his way because of his looks and charm. Affleck fielded his share of criticism early in his career for basically being a pretty face and having him in this role adds some resonance. It's Pike who has the greater challenge because her Amy seems to be in a constant state of emotional flux. There isn't much more you can say about her without giving too much away, but let's just say that Amy is the kind of woman every man is terrified of falling for, and Pike plays that kind of character wonderfully. While Carrie Coon, Kim Dickens, Patrick Fugit, and Neil Patrick Harris all stand out in their various supporting roles, it can be overlooked the contribution of Tyler Perry as Nick's publicity-seeking defense lawyer, Tanner Bolt. Perry may not have heardof David Fincher or Gone Girl before this, but he's pitch perfect here as a Johnny Cochran-type. Perhaps he should get away from the bad Madea flicks more often.

For Fincher, he takes a hold of our attentions right from the beginning and never lets go. It's to his credit to him as a visual guide through the story's lunacy that we never begin to question the craft behind it. Gone Girl is a wildly tilting roller coaster of surprises, and while it often threatens to go off the rails, Fincher's direction and the cleverness of Flynn's script keep us gripped in suspense.

Ben Affleck in Talks to Star in Hitman Film 'The Accountant'

This weekend Ben Affleck will be the prime suspect in David Fincher's Gone Girl (review of that later tonight!), and after that he'll be plenty busy. Of course he'll be suiting up for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and will take the helm for the long-developing adaptation of Live by Night. But he's still managed to find time for one more acting role in The Accountant, a project once eyed by Will Smith and Mel Gibson.

According to Variety, Affleck has entered negotiations to star in the assassin film, which features a Black List script by Bill Dubuque, writer of Robert Downey Jr.'s The Judge. The story centers on a government accountant who doubles as an assassin. No director is on board for this one yet but Gavin O'Connor (Warrior) is said to be the top choice, although he has yet to be made an offer.

Affleck shoots Live by Night next July meaning this one would need to get moving pretty quickly.

Ben Affleck gets Questioned in New 'Gone Girl' Clip

Guys, it pays to REALLY know your wives. Her friends, her hobbies, all the way down to her blood type. Otherwise you may end up in the position Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) is enduring in this new clip from Gone Girl in which he's questioned by two cops (Kim Dickens and Patrick Fugit) about his wife's (Rosamund Pike) disappearance. And if Nick wanted to look like the uncaring sort capable of murdering her he does a pretty good job since he doesn't seem to know anything about the woman he married. Or is that all just an act? Ahhh, the suspense!!!

Gone Girl is directed by David Fincher and opens October 3rd.

First Clip from 'Gone Girl' Reveals Nick and Amy's Happy Meeting

Arguably the biggest movie of the season doesn't have any big explosions, hobbits, or superpowers, it's a murder mystery with a crumbling marriage right at its center. We're only a week away from David Fincher's Gone Girl and the anticipation is building to what many think will be a sure-fire Oscar contender.

The first clip from the adaptation of Gillian Flynn's phenomenon of a novel features Ben Affleck and Rosamund as Nick and "Amazing" Amy Dunne, during their happy first meeting. Things will obviously go downhill from here when Nick becomes a suspect in her disappearance, but this brief glimpse at one of the good times is pretty integral.

Gone Girl hits theaters on October 3rd.

New Photos from David Fincher's 'Gone Girl' Deepen the Mystery

Mysteries abound in David Fincher's adaptation of Gillian Flynn's best-selling novel, Gone Girl, and it's been remarkable how the many twists and turns have been kept so far under wraps. That's despite a heavy marketing campaign that has included trailers and various viral news reports, not to mention a slew of images like the dozen or so you'll find below. But you want to know what's even more of a mystery? How a guy like Tyler Perry, who inexplicably has a small role in the film, can be a director in Hollywood and not know who the heck David Fincher is. Nor did he know anything about Gone Girl before he accepted the job.Or at least that's what he told Yahoo a few days ago...

Perry: “I probably would have walked away from it. If I had known who David Fincher was, and his body of work, or if I’d known the book was so popular, I would have said. And my agent knew that! He didn’t tell me until after I signed on!”

It's almost like he exists only a world where there is a Madea and nothing else. Whatever. Gone Girl opens October 3rd and stars Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris, Scoot McNairy, Patrick Fugit, Emily Ratajkowski, and Carrie Coon. Check out the synopsis and the new images.

GONE GIRL – directed by David Fincher and based upon the global bestseller by Gillian Flynn – unearths the secrets at the heart of a modern marriage. On the occasion of his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) reports that his beautiful wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike), has gone missing. Under pressure from the police and a growing media frenzy, Nick’s portrait of a blissful union begins to crumble. Soon his lies, deceits and strange behavior have everyone asking the same dark question: Did Nick Dunne kill his wife?

Details on Bruce Wayne, Wonder Woman, and the Batcave in 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice'

Outside of the footage teased at Comic-Con nothing has been seen of Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, except for a few character posters and lousy set photos. Do you really need to see a photo of grey-haired Ben Affleck standing around dressed like a civilian? If so, there are other sites you can go to for that. But because we've seen so little most of the updates we get come straight from the rumor mill, and that's what BadAss Digest is serving up today.

One of the bits of info we received on the film right at the time Affleck was brought on, was that his version of Batman would be a grizzled crime-fighting veteran, but now the story goes that he has been operating for close to three decades. Considered an urban legend, Batman has never been seen or had his picture taken. But that doesn't mean he hasn't been busy, and his Batcave is said to have a memorial consisting of a tattered Robin costume. The mere suggestion that Robin has existed in Batman's world is good reason to expect the Boy Wonder, or perhaps Nightwing, will appear somewhere down the line. Maybe not in this movie but later on. Also, Wonder Woman is said to have been doing her thing for awhile in "unexpected" ways, but managing to keep a low profile. This seems to tie in to earlier reports the first time we see her she's posing as Diane Prince.

Anyway, let the speculation continue about how any of this could lead up to Justice League. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens May 6th 2016.

Two New Posters for David Fincher's 'Gone Girl'

While Ben Affleck is going to be pretty busy suited as Batman for awhile, he's got another potentially huge hit on his hands later this year. He'll be at the center of Gone Girl, David Fincher's mystery-thriller based on the best-selling book by Gillian Flynn, and now two more posters for it have been released.

Affleck plays Nick Dunne, a bartender whose wife, dubbed in the media as "Amazing Amy" (Rosamund Pike) goes missing on their fifth wedding anniversary. He's the prime suspect in her disappearance and presumed murder, but is there more to the story? Of course there is, and considering Nick is something of a scum bag (Emily Ratajkowski plays his mistress) he could be too obvious of a choice to pin the blame on. But we'll see. Gone Girl is next on my list of books to read.

Also starring Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, Kim Dickens, and Patrick Fugit, Gone Girl opens October 3rd. [Shortlist/Buzzfeed]

*UPDATE* Comic-Con: First Look at Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman; 'Batman v Superman' Teaser Description

*UPDATE* And here's the updated, higher res version.

Warner Bros. has kicked off Saturday by basically throwing down the Comic-Con gauntlet right at Marvel's feet. After opening up all the screens to give the Hall H crowd a widescreen presentation, the panel kicked off with concept art from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. That was followed by Zack Snyder coming on stage, feigning to not have any footage (they all say that), only to reveal the first teaser and understandably the crowd went ape-dump.

In short, the footage shows a rain-soaked Gotham, where a Batman with glowing eyes and donning the Bat-Armor seen in The Dark Knight Returns, shines the Bat-Signal into the sky. But rather than seeing his insignia, it's instead a very pissed off Superman hovering in the air staring down at him, eyes blazing red. It was awesome and the crowd was as electric as I've ever heard them. Again, Marvel has a very tough act to follow.

The panel basically ended with Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, and Gal Gadot coming up on stage for a brief moment, allowing the crowd to take photos. On the screens were splashed posters for the film, giving us our first look at Gadot as Wonder Woman. It's not the clearest image in the world but we will update it when possible.

Comic-Con: New Image of Ben Affleck as Batman!

Has your Twitter and Facebook been flooded with more geekery than usual? There's a good reason for that San Diego Comic-Con officially kicked off today, and as usual studios are here showing off their latest and greatest. One of the big events taking place this weekend will of course be the Warner Bros. show, although they've been keeping mum on exactly what they'll offer. While the new Bat-suit has been spotted on the show floor, Warner Bros. has gone ahead and released this brand new image of Ben Affleck as Batman, in celebration of the character's 75th anniversary.

Confirmed by photographer Clay Enos as his photo, it's an image that should have fans eager for more. Perhaps similar photos of Henry Cavill as Superman? Or Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman? Between this and the earlier image of Bat-fleck we've seen this movie is looking more and more dour. Hopefully Zack Snyder fans a way to have some fun with it, too.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens May 6th 2016, when it will go up against Captain America 3.

New Trailer for David Fincher's 'Gone Girl' Starring Ben Affleck

David Fincher's run of successful adaptations came to an end with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, although calling it a failure also wouldn't be quite right. Based on the Swedish novel that was part of a global phenomenon at the time, it made a lot of money but not nearly as much as it should, certainly not enough to warrant sequels. But Fincher may have found the perfect way to bounce back with Gone Girl, based on Gillian Flynn's wildly popular crime novel that has swept the country and turned the author into a Hollywood star. After releasing a handful of teaser posters over the weekend a new trailer has been released that suggests Fincher is back at the top of his game.

"Nick Dunne, you are probably the most hated man in America right now", begins this somber, chilling trailer for Gone Girl, which stars Affleck as a man suspected in the disappearance of his wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike). She disappeared on their fifth wedding anniversary and Nick, looking rather unrepentant and somewhat squirrelly, doesn't exactly come off as the most likable figure in the world. From the grim lighting to the blunt characters this is right in Fincher's wheelhouse, and the moody score by Oscar winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (both of The Social Network) only lends to the atmosphere.

Featuring a strange but compelling cast that includes Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, Kim Dickens, Patrick Fugit, Scoot McNairy, Casey Wilson, and Emily Ratajkowski, Gone Girl has an Oscar-worthy release date of October 3rd.

Rumored Character Details for Wonder Woman, Batman, and Lex Luthor in 'Batman v Superman'

There has been a great deal of attention focused on the future of Warner Bros.' DC Comics movies, but before any of that unfolds there's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to deal with first. And as we saw with the failed Green Lantern movie, one screw-up can alter the course of an entire franchise. The gang over at Joblo.com have rounded up some new 'Dawn of Justice' info that goes into some detail on Wonder Woman's costume and screen time, Batman's home, and even a little bit on Lex Luthor and why he's such a jerk. This is all available via Youtube video, so we'll just skim the basics and you can watch the vid for the full deal. And obviously, there are some spoilers beyond this point.

There had been some conflicting reports in regards to the costume Gal Gadot (the image above is fan made, not official) would be wearing as Wonder Woman, with some stating she'd be wearing the updated version with jacket and leggings, but it will reportedly be a traditional "battle ready" costume that is "ripped straight from the comics". She'll also have her full arsenal of weapons from the shield, sword, spear, and of course the golden Lasso of Truth. Wonder Woman won't just be making a cameo, either, as she's said to have a fair amount of screen time and is involved in a major battle sequence.

The relationship between Batman's "grizzled veteran" crime fighter and Superman will be much as it is in the comics, with their personalities frequently clashing. Ben Affleck's Bruce Wayne will have Wayne Manor , although his Batcave is situated underneath another building on the property. And as for Lex Luthor, played by Jesse Eisenberg who may have red hair in the beginning of the film, he's basically pissed because Superman makes him feel inadequate. This causes Lex to try and partially succeed in swaying public opinion against Superman, calling him a threat to humanity.

The rest you can check out in the below video. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens May 6th 2016.

Daniel Radcliffe Says He'd be "Perfect" for Robin in Batman Reboot

There's no indication that Robin will be anywhere near 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which is probably for the best as there are already too many characters to sort through. But with rumors of Ben Affleck leading a solo Batman film in 2019 anything is possible, and one actor who thinks he'd make for an awesome Boy Wonder is Daniel Radcliffe.

Speaking with Buzzfeed, Radcliffe jokingly commented that if he were going to be in another franchise he'd like for it to be as Robin opposite Ben Affleck's "Dark Knight"....

“Batman. If they do that again, I’ll do that too. It’s happening isn’t it? With Ben Affleck. I could be Robin. I’m perfect.”

Obviously he wasn't being serious but the comment has many wondering what a Radcliffe/Affleck superhero team-up could be like. It's far less likely Radcliffe would be asked to play Robin than it would be for him to be Batman's older sidekick, Nightwing. And let's not forget Radcliffe has a long, successful history with Warner Bros. due to the Harry Potter movies, so one never knows. Maybe he will get asked to be a part of their DC Universe at some point.

Radcliffe will be seen next opposite Zoe Kazan in the romantic comedy ,What If.

Batman to Get Solo Film in 2019? Jason Momoa Addresses Aquaman Rumors

It was inevitable that DC and Warner Bros.' proposed schedule for their upcoming slate of superhero films would only lead to even more speculation. And perhaps there's just cause to be a little skeptical as we've already seen a couple of blocks knocked out from under it, starting with the apparent addition of Aquaman to the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice roster. Whether or not the line-up, which includes a Man of Steel sequel in 2018 and a trio of Justice League spinoff films in 2017, turns out to be accurate or not the rumors will keep on coming, and now there's one more involving Ben Affleck's Batman.

According to a story at Latino Review, Warner Bros. is planning a solo Batman film in 2019 which Affleck would star in. It would be titled The Batman and the release does seem to fit with Affleck's scheduling window. He's set to write, direct, and star in the long-developing Prohibition drama, Live By Night, which opens in 2016.

But first Affleck must get through 'Dawn of Justice', and recent reports have confirmed he'll be joined by Jason Momoa as Aquaman. But Momoa, who has frequently and often angrily disputed the stories, played it coy on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night, saying they were "all rumors" but never denying the possibility outright.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens May 6th 2016.

First Look at Ben Affleck as Batman Plus the New Batmobile!

Yesterday, Zack Snyder took to Twitter and teased the reveal of the new Batmobile in Batman vs. Superman, but it turns out he had more surprises in store. Today he's not only given us the first look at the Batmobile, he's also delivered the first shot of Ben Affleck in costume!

Snyder tweeted: "I shot this with my @Leica_Camera M Monochrom. #Batman #Batmobile #Gotham"

Right away, the first thing that stuck out to me is that this is a stockier Batman with the smaller ears on the mask, just as in The Dark Knight Returns. Makes sense considering that is the story David Goyer and Snyder are loosely basing the film on. As for the Batmobile, it's definitely not like the Tumbler used in Christopher Nolan's movies.

So what do you think? This will be more interesting once we can see it in full color.  Batman vs. Superman opens on May 6th 2016.

Jay Roach Directing Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's Wife Swapping Film, 'The Trade'

In the works for years, The Trade has probably been something of a headache for Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. The duo were originally set to star in the film, a true story involving New York Yankees players Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich, with Casey Affleck co-writing the screenplay. A threatened lawsuit by Kekich slowed things down for awhile, and the project just seemed to run out of gas. But now it is definitely back on with a director in Jay Roach (Game Change), although there is a downside to this news.

Roach will take the mound for the film, which is based on Kekich and Peterson, teammates on the Yankees who announced during spring training 1973 that they were swapping families. They had been swapping wives for years and fell in love with the other's partner, a situation that caused quite a scandal as you can imagine. The trade didn't work out so well for one of them, either. Unfortunately, Affleck and Damon's busy schedules have forced them to drop out of the lead roles and simply exec-produce.

While the casting change is disappointing, Roach is a versatile director and perhaps the perfect choice for this particular story. [Variety]

Warner Bros. Bumps Ben Affleck's 'Live By Night' to Late 2016

Warner Bros. is doing some major reorganizing of their release date calendar, and we can probably trace some of this to the apparent decision to shoot Batman vs. Superman and Justice League back-to-back. The biggest impact is on Ben Affleck and his plan to direct Dennis Lehane's Live By Night. Originally slated to open in the high-profile Christmas 2015 spot, the film has now been moved to October 7th 2016. Produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, the Prohibition-era crime drama follows the son of a prominent Boston police captain who rises in the ranks of the mob.

The studio has also dated two Untitled Warner Animation Group projects for February 10th 2017 and February 9th 2018. Can you say The LEGO Movie sequels?

Also, Jeff Nichols' sci-fi film Midnight Special has been set for November 25th 2015. Starring Michael Shannon, Adam Driver, Kirsten Dunst, and Joel Edgerton, the film centers on a Dad who goes on the run with his 8-year-old son who has special powers.

HBO Bringing Back Matt Damon and Ben Affleck's 'Project Greenlight'

Around the time reality TV was just starting to take over, HBO launched one of its own in Project Greenlight. The show was produced by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, and it took audiences behind the scenes of a feature film's production. The competition aspect was to find a first-time director and writer to spearhead the film all the way to completion. It was a fascinating show for its three-season run, and now after more than a decade away HBO is bringing it back.

THR reports that Project Greenlight has been revived, although there aren't any specifics as to when it will debut. Affleck and Damon, who will return as exec-producers, had this to say...

Affleck: “Project Greenlight was ahead of its time. Now that technology has caught up to the concept, we thought it was a perfect time to bring it back. A whole new generation of filmmakers has grown up sharing everything, and the next big director could be just an upload away. It is really great having Project Greenlight back at HBO.”

Damon: “Project Greenlight works — careers have been launched and sustained as a direct result of this contest. Pete Jones, John Gulager, Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan are just a few of the PGL alums who’ve gone on to do great things in Hollywood, and Ben and I are really proud of that.

Jones was the first season winner with his film, Stolen Summer, and Jones' battles with oft-angry producer Chris Moore gave the show most of its spark. Unfortunately there's nothing in this news about Moore and if he'll be a part of this new version of Project Greenlight.

Shia LaBeouf's first feature lead role was in the second season film, The Battle of Shaker Heights, which co-starred Amy Smart. I remember racing off to the one theater in DC that was showing it and walking out thinking it was the worst movie ever. It's still pretty horrible.

The low budget horror Feast was arguably the show's most successful film. Not only did it launch an entire trilogy of creature features, but it sparked the careers of director John Gulager (Piranha 3DD), and writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, known for the Saw movies.
