Batman could Appear in 'Suicide Squad' as Prelude to Solo Movie

Why anybody completely trusts Latino Review after that whole Spider-Man/Marvel thing from last week is unclear, but the site is now switching their attention to DC's Suicide Squad film. The anti-villain flick has undergone something of a seismic shift with the loss of Tom Hardy,  which they say was largely due to creative differences involving his character, Rick Flag. Seems he won't be as prominent to the film as expected, and now there's more info on exactly who could be taking center stage.

Apparently it will be Jared Leto's Joker, Will Smith's Deadshot, Margot Robbie's Enchantress, and possibly even Ben Affleck's Batman who will be at the center of the story. Beware of spoilers from here on out! Turns out Harley Quinn and Deadshot would meet fairly early on in the midst of another job, and that's when they wind up captured and part of Amanda Waller's Suicide Squad. They would basically be  the lead characters, which makes  sense given that it's Smith and Robbie, while Joker is basically a looming evil presence. Based on this it would make sense for Hardy to drop out seeing as how he wouldn't be one of the headliners.

So how does Batman fit into all this? There are two different theories going around right now, and the one from Latino Review is that Affleck's Batman is"only mentioned and shown on camera footage" by Waller. The other, far more interesting rumor comes from Forbes who claim Batman will have an in-story scene involving Joker's escape from prison. This would set up a Dark Knight solo film inspired by The Dark Knight Returns with Joker as the villain.

What it sounds like is that Batman, who apparently will cameo in another unspecified DC film, is being positioned as the overarching character for the entire franchise, kindof like Nick Fury is for the Marvel movies. Batman will obviously star in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and will have a major role in the two upcoming Justice League films. Suicide Squad opens August 5th 2016 and co-stars Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevingne, and possibly Jake Gyllenhaal in Hardy's former role.

The 12 Days of Christmas – Day 5: ‘Batman Returns’

Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) was high up on my favorite movies of 2014 list, and like practically everyone else I’ve talked to, Michael Keaton was primarily the reason why. Michael Keaton, you guys! How easily he veers between stoic and stone-faced and bizarre and unhinged; how effortless he makes those contrasting emotional states look. Keaton excels with it in Birdman, but look at his filmography and it’s always been there – of course in Beetlejuice, but also importantly in Batman Returns.

It’s strange to go back and watch Batman Returns now that our pop-culture psyche has been shaped so thoroughly by Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, but since Tim Burton’s sequel is set during Christmas time and it is now, you know, Christmas time, you should do it. And get ready for just how Tim Burton-y it is, a dimly macabre – and almost anti-capitalist – view of the holiday season. All in all, it’s quite strange: Batman (Keaton) and the Penguin (a perfectly cast Danny DeVito) are supposed to be doubles, and the movie amps up the Penguin’s physicality to drive home their differences; Michelle Pfeiffer goes full unhinged, oozing confrontation in a way that Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman never did; and CHRISTOPHER WALKEN. Christopher Walken! Christopher. Walken.

Still need more reasons for why you should cue up Batman Returns in the next few days? OK, fine, let’s do this.

+ Reason 1: The overall set design! Want to see Christmas put through some kind of fascist nightmare? Look no further than the depiction of Gotham in Batman Returns – all ominous statues; imposingly tall, leaning-over-you buildings; marble and granite and materials that feel like no warmth will ever make its way into your body again. Christmas is supposed to be a festive time, but here, Gotham feels unabashedly cold – and as an indictment of the season, it works.

+ Reason 2: Alfred! Our favorite manservant spends this movie decorating Bruce Wayne’s almost grotesquely opulent Christmas tree and doling out hard truths to our favorite orphan. And he does them both like a badass because, you know, it’s Alfred. What is he going to do, fuck those things up? Please.

+ Reason 3: Michelle Pfeiffer’s scarily sexual Catwoman. The perfect mix of teasing and terror. And look, those hairdos speak for themselves.

+ Reason 4: Speaking of hairdos, please take note of Christopher Walken’s exceptional bouffant. It’s silver as hell and it’s moussed within an inch of its life and it does not fuck around.

+ Reason 5: The Penguin’s penguin army. If you have any kids in your life interested in seeing Dreamworks’s Penguins of Madagascar this holiday, shut that down immediately and show them Batman Returns instead. They might have some nightmares, but that’s a natural part of life, right? And then you won’t have to see Penguins of Madagascar, so really, it’s a Christmas miracle.

Batman Returns is available for streaming through Netflix Instant and for rent through Amazon Instant Video.

Watch Batman and Darth Vader's Brutal Showdown in Latest 'Super Power Beat Down'

The folks at Machinima, the ones behind the Street Fighter web series, have put together one of the most awesome, geek-tastic things ever with their "Super Power Beat Down" series. Basically they take two fictional characters that we'll probably never get a chance to see go at it, and craft an entire battle story around them. Their latest is the best one yet, featuring a showdown between Batman and Darth Vader aboard the Death Star! This one is brutal and amazing and...well, just watch it for yourself. Pretty cool way to get amped up for today's Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer!

Is this Lex Luthor's Plan in 'Batman v Superman'?

Despite all the boring set photos and (relatively) exciting news on Aquaman, actual information on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice remains elusive. And while there are no concrete details in this latest story, the rumor itself is intriguing in that it hints at some major plot developments and teases a big time villain. This entire story consists of potential spoilers so proceed at your own risk.

There are two parts to this one and it all begins with Geeky Tyrant, who apparently spoke to an on-set extra who told them "the ending of the film has already been filmed. One of the scenes shot featured Batman breaking into Lexcorp to steal kryptonite, and apparently Lexcorp had somehow gotten ahold of General Zod's body."

So just in that first little bit we've got Kryptonite, Lex Luthor, General Zod, and Batman possibly getting his hands on the one thing that can stop Superman.  Badass Digest then confirmed much of it, adding that Luthor has been gathering pieces of the World Engine, and plans to use Zod's corpse as the central part of his plan. What's he going to do with it? Create something, or someone, who can finally defeat Superman of course. They tease that enemy with this:

Looks like the outline of Doomsday, doesn't it? This isn't the first time Doomsday has been rumored to be making an appearance and it probably won't be the last. What do you think? Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens March 25th 2016.

Awesome Unseen 'Jurassic Park' and 'Batman' Posters by John Alvin

We complain about the terrible state of movie posters all the time here on this site because...well, they suck. Badly done photo-shopping, poor framing, and a general lack of imagination are the norm nowadays, which is why we try to honor those posters that break from the current mold. There was a time when movie posters, selling a movie through still imagery was a genuine art, and one of the men who was best at it was John Alvin.

Alvin designed some of the most memorable movie images in history, designing over 100 posters for movies such as Blazing Saddles, E.T., and The Lion King. Chances are the first image that popped in your mind when reading those titles was one Alvin created. He also had a number of great one-sheets that didn't get used, and to help promote the awesome new book, The Art of John Alvin, his unused Jurassic Park images have been released. Along with it comes his poster for Tim Burton's Batman, which is more comic-inspired rather than the simple insignia design the studio actually went with.

The Art of John Alvin goes on sale August 16th and you can pre-order it here. If you're in the DC/VA area I'd also suggest checking out ArtInsights Animation and Film Art Gallery in Reston, VA, the home of many original Alvin pieces. It's run by my good friend +Leslie Combemale , who is often a guest on my show Cinema Royale. There are tons of these for many other movies (like Star Trek VI and The Karate Kid), and if you want to see more check out IGN, THR, Flavorwire, and Movies.com.

Details on Bruce Wayne, Wonder Woman, and the Batcave in 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice'

Outside of the footage teased at Comic-Con nothing has been seen of Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, except for a few character posters and lousy set photos. Do you really need to see a photo of grey-haired Ben Affleck standing around dressed like a civilian? If so, there are other sites you can go to for that. But because we've seen so little most of the updates we get come straight from the rumor mill, and that's what BadAss Digest is serving up today.

One of the bits of info we received on the film right at the time Affleck was brought on, was that his version of Batman would be a grizzled crime-fighting veteran, but now the story goes that he has been operating for close to three decades. Considered an urban legend, Batman has never been seen or had his picture taken. But that doesn't mean he hasn't been busy, and his Batcave is said to have a memorial consisting of a tattered Robin costume. The mere suggestion that Robin has existed in Batman's world is good reason to expect the Boy Wonder, or perhaps Nightwing, will appear somewhere down the line. Maybe not in this movie but later on. Also, Wonder Woman is said to have been doing her thing for awhile in "unexpected" ways, but managing to keep a low profile. This seems to tie in to earlier reports the first time we see her she's posing as Diane Prince.

Anyway, let the speculation continue about how any of this could lead up to Justice League. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens May 6th 2016.

New Trailers for 'Gotham', 'The Flash', and 'Arrow'!

When I was putting this article together I thought to myself, "For the title image I'll just use the logo for whatever the coolest trailer of the bunch happened to be", as you see above picking the best was easier said than done. For all of the "Marvel rules the world talk" you hear you'd think DC was all but dead, I'm here to tell you they are far from it. DC, with the success of Arrow has slowly been carving out a large share of TV land. Couple the fan reaction to the Dawn of Justice teaser this weekend with the sheer awesomelitude of these three trailers and you have a brand that seems poised to strike some serious blows to the Marvel stronghold.

Before we get into the trailers I just want to point out how awesome it is to be having this conversation in 2014. After X-Men ignited the superhero frenzy in 2000 the masses have been saying that the comic book movie nirvana we've been living it had a definite shelf life. Here we are, some 14 years later, and the genre has never been stronger. I dare say it's here to stay.

First we have a full trailer for Gotham. While there's not much here to judge the series potential as a whole it does give a good luck into the feel of the show. Plenty of one-shots at villains-to-be, a perfect recreation of the classic "Bruce's parents get whacked and he cries to the heavens at their feet" panel, and a good look at the eternal optimism of Jim Gordon. There's just a few things I need from the series in order for it to work. First and foremost I'd like Bruce to be in the far background of the events, the showrunners need to exhibit some serious willpower and make this show about Gotham itself, from the perspective of Jim Gordon. Second, I need them to resist the temptation of throwing winks at fanboys every week. Mainly they need to treat this world as if we knew nothing of what it would become, let the characters grow into their future selves organically and don't rush anything. Regardless, I'm all about it.

Next up we have the first official teaser trailer for the new series on The CW, The Flash. Barry Allen debuted on Arrow last year to favorable fan reactions, leading to his own spin-off series. I'll admit I don't know a ton about where the series is going or what angle they will take but as long as they capture who Barry is as a person and handle it with the same ingeniouity that they've done over on Arrow I'll be happy.

Saving the best for last we have the season 3 trailer for Arrow. I've constantly beat myself up about not making this one of my "Must Watch" shows, I can't explain why I'm not caught up...the show is, by all accounts, amazing. The episodes I've watched I've thoroughly enjoyed (even if Katie Cassidy, a former favorite of mine, has lost a step), I just haven't made it a priority. I'm happy to say that this trailer for season 3 has adjusted my priorities and starting today I'll be streaming Arrow on Netflix in an effort to catch up before the premier. Not being an avid watcher at this point it's possible I'm missing some things but to my eyes this series has everything. Like a more mature Smallville with all of the comicy goodness and none of the saccharine Sweet Valley High drama, Arrow seems to have found a way to avoid the palpable cheapness of superhero shows past. The action looks amazing, the heroes and villains plentiful, and the story real. I don't think I'm overstating to say that this next season of Arrow could be some of the best comic based TV we've ever seen.

Comic-Con: New Image of Ben Affleck as Batman!

Has your Twitter and Facebook been flooded with more geekery than usual? There's a good reason for that San Diego Comic-Con officially kicked off today, and as usual studios are here showing off their latest and greatest. One of the big events taking place this weekend will of course be the Warner Bros. show, although they've been keeping mum on exactly what they'll offer. While the new Bat-suit has been spotted on the show floor, Warner Bros. has gone ahead and released this brand new image of Ben Affleck as Batman, in celebration of the character's 75th anniversary.

Confirmed by photographer Clay Enos as his photo, it's an image that should have fans eager for more. Perhaps similar photos of Henry Cavill as Superman? Or Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman? Between this and the earlier image of Bat-fleck we've seen this movie is looking more and more dour. Hopefully Zack Snyder fans a way to have some fun with it, too.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens May 6th 2016, when it will go up against Captain America 3.

Rumored Character Details for Wonder Woman, Batman, and Lex Luthor in 'Batman v Superman'

There has been a great deal of attention focused on the future of Warner Bros.' DC Comics movies, but before any of that unfolds there's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to deal with first. And as we saw with the failed Green Lantern movie, one screw-up can alter the course of an entire franchise. The gang over at Joblo.com have rounded up some new 'Dawn of Justice' info that goes into some detail on Wonder Woman's costume and screen time, Batman's home, and even a little bit on Lex Luthor and why he's such a jerk. This is all available via Youtube video, so we'll just skim the basics and you can watch the vid for the full deal. And obviously, there are some spoilers beyond this point.

There had been some conflicting reports in regards to the costume Gal Gadot (the image above is fan made, not official) would be wearing as Wonder Woman, with some stating she'd be wearing the updated version with jacket and leggings, but it will reportedly be a traditional "battle ready" costume that is "ripped straight from the comics". She'll also have her full arsenal of weapons from the shield, sword, spear, and of course the golden Lasso of Truth. Wonder Woman won't just be making a cameo, either, as she's said to have a fair amount of screen time and is involved in a major battle sequence.

The relationship between Batman's "grizzled veteran" crime fighter and Superman will be much as it is in the comics, with their personalities frequently clashing. Ben Affleck's Bruce Wayne will have Wayne Manor , although his Batcave is situated underneath another building on the property. And as for Lex Luthor, played by Jesse Eisenberg who may have red hair in the beginning of the film, he's basically pissed because Superman makes him feel inadequate. This causes Lex to try and partially succeed in swaying public opinion against Superman, calling him a threat to humanity.

The rest you can check out in the below video. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens May 6th 2016.

Daniel Radcliffe Says He'd be "Perfect" for Robin in Batman Reboot

There's no indication that Robin will be anywhere near 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which is probably for the best as there are already too many characters to sort through. But with rumors of Ben Affleck leading a solo Batman film in 2019 anything is possible, and one actor who thinks he'd make for an awesome Boy Wonder is Daniel Radcliffe.

Speaking with Buzzfeed, Radcliffe jokingly commented that if he were going to be in another franchise he'd like for it to be as Robin opposite Ben Affleck's "Dark Knight"....

“Batman. If they do that again, I’ll do that too. It’s happening isn’t it? With Ben Affleck. I could be Robin. I’m perfect.”

Obviously he wasn't being serious but the comment has many wondering what a Radcliffe/Affleck superhero team-up could be like. It's far less likely Radcliffe would be asked to play Robin than it would be for him to be Batman's older sidekick, Nightwing. And let's not forget Radcliffe has a long, successful history with Warner Bros. due to the Harry Potter movies, so one never knows. Maybe he will get asked to be a part of their DC Universe at some point.

Radcliffe will be seen next opposite Zoe Kazan in the romantic comedy ,What If.

Batman to Get Solo Film in 2019? Jason Momoa Addresses Aquaman Rumors

It was inevitable that DC and Warner Bros.' proposed schedule for their upcoming slate of superhero films would only lead to even more speculation. And perhaps there's just cause to be a little skeptical as we've already seen a couple of blocks knocked out from under it, starting with the apparent addition of Aquaman to the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice roster. Whether or not the line-up, which includes a Man of Steel sequel in 2018 and a trio of Justice League spinoff films in 2017, turns out to be accurate or not the rumors will keep on coming, and now there's one more involving Ben Affleck's Batman.

According to a story at Latino Review, Warner Bros. is planning a solo Batman film in 2019 which Affleck would star in. It would be titled The Batman and the release does seem to fit with Affleck's scheduling window. He's set to write, direct, and star in the long-developing Prohibition drama, Live By Night, which opens in 2016.

But first Affleck must get through 'Dawn of Justice', and recent reports have confirmed he'll be joined by Jason Momoa as Aquaman. But Momoa, who has frequently and often angrily disputed the stories, played it coy on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night, saying they were "all rumors" but never denying the possibility outright.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens May 6th 2016.

First Look at Ben Affleck as Batman Plus the New Batmobile!

Yesterday, Zack Snyder took to Twitter and teased the reveal of the new Batmobile in Batman vs. Superman, but it turns out he had more surprises in store. Today he's not only given us the first look at the Batmobile, he's also delivered the first shot of Ben Affleck in costume!

Snyder tweeted: "I shot this with my @Leica_Camera M Monochrom. #Batman #Batmobile #Gotham"

Right away, the first thing that stuck out to me is that this is a stockier Batman with the smaller ears on the mask, just as in The Dark Knight Returns. Makes sense considering that is the story David Goyer and Snyder are loosely basing the film on. As for the Batmobile, it's definitely not like the Tumbler used in Christopher Nolan's movies.

So what do you think? This will be more interesting once we can see it in full color.  Batman vs. Superman opens on May 6th 2016.

'Gotham' TV Series Finds Its Young Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle

Fox's upcoming Gotham TV series is planning to have two major storylines running parallel to one another, although either could probably support a show individually. One arc is the development of detective James Gordon into the Gotham City commissioner we all know he grows up to be, while the other plot involves the pre-teen Bruce Wayne immediately following the murder of his parents. While most of the adult characters have been cast, The Wrap reports that the young actors playing Bruce Wayne and future Catwoman Selina Kyle have been found.

14-year-old David Mazouz (Touch) has been cast as young Bruce Wayne, who is described as "serious and soulful". Taking on the role of Selina Kyle is newcomer Camren Bicondova, whose only big screen credit is a role in the kid dance flick, Battle America. The future DC Comics antihero is described as" a teenage orphan, street thief and skilled pickpocket who is suspicious and wholly unpredictable.", and "dangerous when cornered". They make up the final series regulars

Starring Ben McKenzie, Sean Pertwee, Jada Pinkett Smith, and more, Gotham is expected to air this fall with Bruno Heller (The Mentalist) as showrunner.

'Gotham' Casts Jada Pinkett Smith as Villainous Mob Boss

She's survived The Matrix and been to A Different World, but now Jada Pinkett Smith is headed to the crime-infested streets of Gotham City. Deadline reports that Smith has joined the cast of Fox's Gotham TV series, an origin story starring Ben McKenzie as Detective Jim Gordon and an unknown actor as a young Bruce Wayne.

The interesting thing is that Smith won't be playing one of the good guys. She'll be making Gotham worse as the colorfully-named mob boss, Fish Mooney. The character is described as "an imposing, hotheaded and notoriously sadistic gangster boss and nightclub owner with street smarts and almost extra-sensory abilities to read people like an open book who is not one to be crossed." Smith can certainly play intimidating so imposing should be easy enough.

She joins Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock, Zabryna Guevara as Captain Essen, Erin Richards as Gordon's fiance Barbara Kean, Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth and Robin Lord Taylor as The Penguin aka Oswald Cobblepot. Gotham has already been given a full series order with Bruno Heller serving as showrunner.

'The LEGO Movie' Blooper Reel is as Awesome as the Movie

So The LEGO Movie opened to $69M last weekend and everybody who doesn't have a massive stick up their butt seems to love it. Chances are it will be sticking around for a long time, especially with Warner Bros. readying a sequel, and the fun keeps on going with a hilarious "Blooper Reel" of outtakes. The best part? Even more awesome quotes from Will Arnett's Batman. More LEGO please.

The LEGO Movie is in theaters now and it's basically your best escape from what has been an awful start to the cinematic season.

Review: 'The Lego Movie' Starring Chris Pratt, Morgan Freeman, and Will Ferrell

What's so special about The LEGO Movie? It's just another movie based on a toy designed to move units at Wal-Mart or something, right? What makes it any different or better than G.I. Joe? Or Transformers? True enough that there may be a few more LEGO Bat-Wings flying off the shelves in the coming weeks, but it's only because The LEGO Movie taps into the childlike imagination and awe that LEGO was always meant to inspire. By embracing the potential in literally building untold worlds where characters from other universes can interact in one epic adventure, the film captures the magic of diving into the toy box and letting your imagination run wild with possibility.

Hilarious and insanely packed with vivid, ever-moving parts done in the classic LEGO style, the film benefits from the presence of co-directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, whose Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs boasted similar visual wonders. But it's the intelligence and humor in their script that forms the firmest of building blocks, appealing to kids and nostalgic adults alike. We're introduced to Emmet (voiced by Chris Pratt), a normal everyday LEGO builder who is willfully, wholeheartedly part of the generic machine. As part of a massive team he keeps this LEGO city awash in new, unimpressive buildings; bops to the bland but maddeningly infectious pop song "Everything is Awesome" (you'll never get it out of your head!), and wants nothing more than to be a part of the crowd. But Emmett is nobody, a total "blank slate" with so little personality that few even know he exists.

That changes when he stumbles upon the Piece of Resistance, an all-powerful object that could prevent the evil Lord Business (Will Ferrell) from destroying everything with his super weapon, the Kragl (one of many plays on words better seen than explained). Discovered by the rebellious and sexy Wildstyle (Elizabeth Banks), Emmett is transported beyond his home realm and into a number of colorful universes that will make great toy sets in the future...if they aren't already. The god-like Vitruvius (voiced by Morgan Freeman, naturally) believes Emmet is a Master Builder; a chosen one who can put an end to Lord Business' reign of terror. But first Emmet, who has never had an original thought in his head, must learn to put his fears aside and prove he can be the hero the universe demands him to be. Joining him on the journey are literally dozens of pop culture icons, and it's safe to say this is the one place where you can see Batman (Will Arnett), Superman (Channing Tatum) and the Ninja Turtles fighting side-by-side with Shaquille O'Neal, Gandalf, and Dumbledore. Even if the threadbare plot is merely an excuse to put all of these characters together, it's so cool that it doesn't really matter.

The introductory scenes zip along at a rapid pace but it picks up into a full-on sprint once the adventure begins, to the point where it's tough to keep track of what is going on. Animated with digital/stop-motion brilliance by Animal Logic, each frame is constantly buzzing with hundreds of characters at once, and they all seem to be doing something you want to pay attention to. It gets a little overwhelming, but it's nothing a second viewing won't cure. And you will definitely want to see The LEGO movie at least one more time in order to take in the massively detailed world and catch every single sight gag. It's refreshing to see a film like this that seems like it can go absolutely anywhere and have literally anything happen, depending solely on the creativity and imagination of the filmmakers. And through it all, the film manages to be a surprisingly effective, even emotional story about embracing one's uniqueness.

Problems only arise when the film gets away from the LEGO universe to impart some labored wisdom in a Meta context that just feels jarring. If the point is that toys are meant to be played with rather than locked away (or heaven forbid, kept in their original packaging), then the rest of the film makes that point abundantly clear just as the Toy Story movies do. The final act reveal doesn't quite work, even though it makes perfect sense, because it sacrifices fun for a message we don't need hammered home.

The LEGO Movie has clicked into place the building blocks for a new, wholly imaginative franchise that can appeal to audiences of any age, and has no limits on where it can go next.

Matt Damon Talks Ben Affleck's Batsuit and the 'Batman vs. Superman' Story

One would expect that Ben Affleck's buddy Kevin Smith and his wife Jennifer Garner would have nothing but high praise about Batman vs. Superman, in particular how the actor looks in the Batsuit. But Affleck and Matt Damon have been pals for so long that he might be a little more candid and rip it if there are Bat-nipples on the suit or something. In a conversation with MTV, Damon spoke about the Batsuit and gave his impression on the direction Zack Snyder is going with the film...

Damon: "I've seen a picture, I have seen a picture. It's excellent. And I've talked to him about the storyline, and it's great. Look I've known him for thirty-something years, I'd be the first guy being like 'Buddy, what are you doing?' but I think the movie is going to be great."

Hopefully we'll get our first glimpse at it soon and he doesn't look like a total clown. Honestly, I'd be happy if they just re-used the old designs from Christopher Nolan's run, but it's understandable they'd want to put a fresh stamp on Batman's costume. And considering this is loosely inspired by The Dark Knight Returns, chances are it will be at least partially armored.

Batman vs. Superman opens May 6th 2016.

DVD Review: 'Justice League: War'

So here we go, since I watch a ton of cartoons and am a known OG comic reader I thought I’d hold the Punch Drunk Critics readers down and watch this Justice League War. Now see it was kind of hard for me to watch this without any bias since I pretty much think the New 52 and the new Origin of Justice League in which this movie is based is full of wacktacularness. That being said I’ve liked most of the DC movies a lot even Flashpoint Paradox so I thought I could be surprised, but sadly I am surprised in the worst way.  Justice League War is so full of wack that I was shocked by the amount as it grew when watching it and then continuing to think about it.

Justice League War is about the first time the major superheroes in the DC universe come together and forms the Justice League.  The story starts us off in Gotham with Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) giving chase to a shadowy figure that just kidnapped a woman of the street. The public and GL included think it’s The Batman since at this point in time Batman is just an urban legend.  GL is proven wrong when Batman comes out and saves the woman; Batman kicks the baddie, plus sons GL in the process. What we get from here in the first half is a buddy-cop relationship like K and J from Men in Black. Please note Hal Jordan is a complete and utter idiot in this version along with being overly arrogant. Batman is basically just Batman here. Their investigation in Gotham leads them to having to meet Superman for the first time in a not so peaceful way.

What we get next is some vignettes of the other characters like Victor Stone playing football while his dad is off studying a device at S.T.A.R. Labs delivered by the Flash; Wonder Woman’s first trip to Washington with Steve Trevor; and the bonus of annoyingly bad Billy Batson being a fan of Stone.  Now here’s the thing: the production on this animated home release is pretty good. The animation is very solid along with pacing and staging of all the scenes. The real problem here is the story and the characterization of the main characters and the antagonist. Bear with even though I’m pretty public with my dislike of the whole post New 52 versions of DC Comics’ characters.

Here’s the thing it’s very hard to like any of the heroes in this story. Wonder Woman’s characterization is pretty sad, she’s mostly like let me smash this and stab that with my sword while screaming. She doesn’t seem heroic, honorable, a messenger of peace or a princess at all. Superman is just a meat-head jock type of guy. He doesn’t seem that inspiring or really threatening other than he can lift stuff and fly. Then we have poor Billy Batson and alter ego that is SHAZAM. He’s like every bad kid in a movie but in the end they never have you like the kid he’s just a little asshole who becomes that little asshole in a grownup body. There are no real arcs for many of these characters.

That being said there are a few good things in this. Barry Allen Flash is pretty likeable; he is just a very true classic interpretation of the character that you can root for in this story.  Another thing that was good is Victor Stone's arc to becoming Cyborg. We get the whole dynamic with his father and motivations for being in the situation he is in and how he becomes a hero. All of this was in comic version of the story but for me it is handling way better than it was in the original version.  One more thing that I didn’t like is how Darkseid us used and also how violently sensationalistic they are with showing all these battles. I don’t really think it helps anything in telling the story at all but you might just think I’m a fanboy prude.

Now the one thing that really stands out on this release is all the special features. The documentary on the career of Jim Lee (the modern comics GOAT in penciling) was really well done at covering his career and his impact on comics. For serious comic readers a lot of nice tidbits of history of Wildstorm is all through this. The Deconstructing Justice League feature with the director and Jim Lee discussing the comic version and the movie along with what was changed was quite enlightening and interesting. It might not be that fun to watch for those that don’t really care about the making of a cartoon or comic but if you are though man this is the real movie.  Now the last one that is the storyboard comparison to final animation is just pure creative nerd stuff. I loved it but I kind of draw for a living so it’s right up my alley.

So here it is, I don’t just  think Justice League War is not only the worst of these Warner bros animation DC comics home releases to date it’s the worst animated story they’ve done since modern DC superhero cartoon era started with Batman: The Animated Series in 1992. Even though it looks nice everything else is so mishandled that it's quite confusing. It has you questioning who else is getting involved in their creative process from picking the material to adapt to just constructing the story. Like let’s be honest here, Warner Bros. Animation has been dropping pure hit after hit since 1992 and now this. I hope this is just a minor blip on the timeline and not a foreshadowing of things to come from this continuing partnership.

Oh and Aquaman got played out he didn't get a shot in the movie.

'Gotham' TV Series to Feature Young Versions of Classic Batman Villains

The Smallville model worked for more than a decade, telling the story of young Clark Kent and his path towards becoming Superman, while also introducing us youthful versions of his most nefarious enemies. Fox is hoping they can replicate that long-running success with Gotham, which is no longer just about the early adventures of Detective Jim Gordon but will include a young Bruce Wayne.

Fox chairman Kevin O'Reilly says they have full rights access to the entire library of Batman characters, revealing that that we'll see younger versions of Catwoman, the Penguin, the Riddler, and yep even the Joker.

Reilly: “This is all of the classic Batman characters. It follows the arc of how they all became what they were. I’ve read the script its really good. It’s going to be this operatic soap that has a slightly larger-than-life quality.”

But just as Smallville refrained from showing anybody in costume for most of its run, it sounds as if Gotham will carry the same policy...at least in the beginning.

Reilly: “We’re not starting in that world where the villains are in costume. You see markers for it that are delicious you see where the evolution and eccentricity where they become those characters. We don’t start off with capes and costumes.”

Bruce Wayne will be roughly 12-years-old during the series, and his parents' murder will be one of the over-arching investigations. If the series goes the way Reilly hopes, the series' final episode will have Bruce donning the Batman suit for the first time.

Not really much of a surprise here, as this approach has also worked on Arrow, and like that show it will be totally separate from Warner Bros. big screen plans. So Ben Affleck can rest easy that there won't be another Batman tugging at his cape.  [EW]

Superman and Batman Get Their Own 'The LEGO Movie' Posters

Before they ever go toe-to-toe in Batman vs. Superman, the two iconic DC heroes will first meet in The LEGO Movie. Call me crazy, but I think they may be a lot more fun as toys than as grizzled, dark 'n brooding foes. Warner Bros. has released two new posters, one featuring Supes and the word "Superness", the other with Bats giving off some "Batitude".

Channing Tatum will be voicing Superman with Will Arnett as the voice of Batman, joining Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Liam Neeson, Alison Brie, Morgan Freeman, Elizabeth Banks, Charlie Day, and many more. Directed by 21 Jump Street's Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the film centers on an ordinary Lego figure who is mistaken for someone extraordinary, and is recruited into an epic quest to stop an evil villain, voiced by Ferrell.

The LEGO Movie opens February 7th.
