Jared Leto Turns Down 'Brilliance'; Olga Kurylenko is 'Little Mizz Innocent'; Alison Brie Learns 'How to Be Single'

* So it won't be Jared Leto starring in the sci-fi adaptation, Brilliance. After circling the role some days ago, Leto now joins Will Smith in turning down the lead in Julius Onah's film which takes place in a world where some known as "brilliants" are born with incredible powers. So the search is on for a new A-list actor to join Noomi Rapace, who is on board as the female lead. Well, maybe this frees Leto up to take on Marvel's Doctor Strange?  [Nikki Finke]

* Ex-Bond Girl Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace, Oblivion) will finally get a shot at leading her own action movie, joining Little Mizz Innocent from Princess Kaiulani director Marc Forby. Penned by Gino McKoy, the story follows "a seemingly innocent UN interpreter caught in a power struggle between the FBI and a criminal dynasty." [Deadline]

* Alison Brie (The Kings of Summer) is learning How to Be Single alongside star Lily Collins. She has come aboard the adaptation of Liz Tuccillo's book, directed by Christian Ditter (Love, Rosie) and centers on a woman searching for love in New York. Gee, how novel. [Variety]

Adam Scott and Alison Brie are 'Sleeping with Other People'

It was looking like a reunion for director Leslye Headland and her Bachelorette star Kirsten Dunst when the two reunited for the upcoming comedy, Sleeping with Other People. There have been some changes now at the top of the casting, and while it's still a reunion, Dunst won't be a part of it.

Adam Scott, who also co-starred in Bachelorette, has joined the film, which stars Jason Sudeikis as “a womanizer who befriends a serial cheater, only for a romantic attraction to develop between them. Dunst has been forced to drop out due to scheduling, and in her place will be Community star Alison Brie. It's another solid move for the sought-after Brie, who recently agreed to join Kevin Hart and Will Ferrell in Get Hard.

Deals aren't set in stone just yet and Headland is hesitant to start celebrating about her talented cast...

Headland: "Films are always like, it may not happen, we'll see. Even going into the premiere of Bachelorette, I was like, 'It still may not happen'…I don't know if it's just being an assistant and having seen how the sausage is made, where you just sort of come at everything with this feeling of…'It's not set in stone, kids.' I've seen shit fall apart over less." [THR]

Alison Brie to 'Get Hard'; Danny Trejo Finds 'Hope Lost'; 'American Ultra' Adds Walton Goggins

* Alison Brie (Community, The Kings of Summer) has joined Get Hard, the prison comedy starring Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart. Directed by Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder), the film has Ferrell as an investment banker wrongly convicted of a crime, and must toughen up for jail with the help of the guy who washes his car. Brie will play the fiancee of Ferrell's character.

* Now that he's done singing and dancing in Muppets Most Wanted, Danny Trejo is moving on to the Italian crime thriller, Hope Lost. Directed by David Petrucci and starring Mischa Barton, Daniel Baldwin, and Michael Madsen (basically a murderer's trio of washed up actors), the film follows a "bored young woman who dreams of the life of soap opera characters meets a mysterious man who charms her away from her small hometown then sells her to a pimp."

* Walton Goggins (Justified) has joined Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg in American Ultra, the intriguing and highly sought-after action film Lionsgate just shelled out a ton of cash to acquire. Directed by Nima Nourizaden, it has Eisenberg as a stoner who goes on the run with his girlfriend when it's discovered he was part of a government program to create Jason Bourne-esque soldiers.

Review: 'The Lego Movie' Starring Chris Pratt, Morgan Freeman, and Will Ferrell

What's so special about The LEGO Movie? It's just another movie based on a toy designed to move units at Wal-Mart or something, right? What makes it any different or better than G.I. Joe? Or Transformers? True enough that there may be a few more LEGO Bat-Wings flying off the shelves in the coming weeks, but it's only because The LEGO Movie taps into the childlike imagination and awe that LEGO was always meant to inspire. By embracing the potential in literally building untold worlds where characters from other universes can interact in one epic adventure, the film captures the magic of diving into the toy box and letting your imagination run wild with possibility.

Hilarious and insanely packed with vivid, ever-moving parts done in the classic LEGO style, the film benefits from the presence of co-directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, whose Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs boasted similar visual wonders. But it's the intelligence and humor in their script that forms the firmest of building blocks, appealing to kids and nostalgic adults alike. We're introduced to Emmet (voiced by Chris Pratt), a normal everyday LEGO builder who is willfully, wholeheartedly part of the generic machine. As part of a massive team he keeps this LEGO city awash in new, unimpressive buildings; bops to the bland but maddeningly infectious pop song "Everything is Awesome" (you'll never get it out of your head!), and wants nothing more than to be a part of the crowd. But Emmett is nobody, a total "blank slate" with so little personality that few even know he exists.

That changes when he stumbles upon the Piece of Resistance, an all-powerful object that could prevent the evil Lord Business (Will Ferrell) from destroying everything with his super weapon, the Kragl (one of many plays on words better seen than explained). Discovered by the rebellious and sexy Wildstyle (Elizabeth Banks), Emmett is transported beyond his home realm and into a number of colorful universes that will make great toy sets in the future...if they aren't already. The god-like Vitruvius (voiced by Morgan Freeman, naturally) believes Emmet is a Master Builder; a chosen one who can put an end to Lord Business' reign of terror. But first Emmet, who has never had an original thought in his head, must learn to put his fears aside and prove he can be the hero the universe demands him to be. Joining him on the journey are literally dozens of pop culture icons, and it's safe to say this is the one place where you can see Batman (Will Arnett), Superman (Channing Tatum) and the Ninja Turtles fighting side-by-side with Shaquille O'Neal, Gandalf, and Dumbledore. Even if the threadbare plot is merely an excuse to put all of these characters together, it's so cool that it doesn't really matter.

The introductory scenes zip along at a rapid pace but it picks up into a full-on sprint once the adventure begins, to the point where it's tough to keep track of what is going on. Animated with digital/stop-motion brilliance by Animal Logic, each frame is constantly buzzing with hundreds of characters at once, and they all seem to be doing something you want to pay attention to. It gets a little overwhelming, but it's nothing a second viewing won't cure. And you will definitely want to see The LEGO movie at least one more time in order to take in the massively detailed world and catch every single sight gag. It's refreshing to see a film like this that seems like it can go absolutely anywhere and have literally anything happen, depending solely on the creativity and imagination of the filmmakers. And through it all, the film manages to be a surprisingly effective, even emotional story about embracing one's uniqueness.

Problems only arise when the film gets away from the LEGO universe to impart some labored wisdom in a Meta context that just feels jarring. If the point is that toys are meant to be played with rather than locked away (or heaven forbid, kept in their original packaging), then the rest of the film makes that point abundantly clear just as the Toy Story movies do. The final act reveal doesn't quite work, even though it makes perfect sense, because it sacrifices fun for a message we don't need hammered home.

The LEGO Movie has clicked into place the building blocks for a new, wholly imaginative franchise that can appeal to audiences of any age, and has no limits on where it can go next.

Batman and Superman In the First Trailer for 'The Lego Movie'

There have been nearly two dozen movies based on the Lego toys up to this point, from their Bionicle series to Lego: Star Wars to various others usually released straight-to-DVD. So what is it about The Lego Movie that makes it any different? Well, it does have the 21 Jump Street duo of Chris Miller and Phil Lord directing, and the voice cast includes Will Ferrell, Morgan Freeman, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Liam Neeson, Nick Offerman, Alison Brie, and Charlie Day. So there's an incredible level of talent involved, and even if all it ultimately does is make Lego a cool Christmas gift again, the first trailer is mighty impressive.

Combining the might of the Justice League, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, NBA All-Stars, and Star Wars characters in a story clearly inspired by The Lord of the Rings, the film looks like loads of fun for kids and immature adults alike. The story centers on a regular Lego who is mistaken for someone extraordinary, and charged with saving the world from an evil tyrant.

The Lego Movie assembles on February 7th 2014.

Teresa Palmer, Imogen Poots, Emilia Clarke and more testing for 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier'; Black Widow to appear

However things ultimately shake out,  one thing is for certain and it's that Captain America won't be sleeping alone under those star-spangled bedsheets for much longer. Deadline has what is supposedly the list of lovely ladies who will be testing to play Chris Evans' love interest in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and it's an assemblage of some of the hottest female talent working today. I don't think Evans will be complaining one bit.

Alison Brie(Community), Imogen Poots(Fright Night), Teresa Palmer(Take Me Home Tonight), Emilia Clarke(Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones), and Jessica Brown-Findlay(Downtown Abbey) are reportedly up for the role which still hasn't been revealed. I assume it will be Sharon Carter, the agent niece of Cap's WWII love, Peggy Carter(Hayley Atwell). But I could be wrong. We'll just have to wait and see. Poots' name came up back in August when she was mentioned along with Anna Kendrick and Felicity Jones for the female lead, so who knows if those two are still in the mix. For that matter, who knows if Poots' continued presence makes her the frontrunner?

One of Cap's most enduring relationships in the comics happens to be with Black Widow, with both as government agents fighting for their respective countries. The two have a long history, and Marvel is keen to play that up as Variety confirms Scarlett Johansson will be appearing in the film. I guess since Marvel decided not to use one of her contractually mandated appearances on Iron Man 3, the next best thing is Captain America.

Palmer is my favorite of the bunch, as she's shown me a lot in I Am Number Four and Take Me Home Tonight. But part of me really wants to see what Clarke can do in a bigger venue. There's no word if this would be the sort of role we'd see in multiple films, but I'm guessing it will be.  Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens on April 4th 2014.
