New Trailer for 'The Two Faces of January' with Viggo Mortensen, Oscar Isaac, and Kirsten Dunst

The combination of Viggo Mortensen, Kirsten Dunst, and Oscar Isaac should be enough to put a lot of eyes on international crime thriller, The Two Faces of January. But for many the real draw will be author Patricia Highsmith (The Talented Mr. Ripley), as the film marks yet another of her famed novels brought to the screen. When the last trailer for the film debuted a U.S. release date had yet to be secured, but that has now changed.

The latest trailer plays up the noir aspects and picturesque locale in Greece, Paris, and Crete. Mortensen and Dunst are a wealthy couple abroad who encounter a tourist/scam artist (Isaac) and rope him into their murderous plot while the wife may be falling for their new companion. It's another dark, complicated emotional morass from Highsmith, adapted and directed by Drive writer Hossein Amini.

The Two Faces of January has been given a VOD release on August 28th, followed by a limited theatrical run September 26th.

Adam Scott and Alison Brie are 'Sleeping with Other People'

It was looking like a reunion for director Leslye Headland and her Bachelorette star Kirsten Dunst when the two reunited for the upcoming comedy, Sleeping with Other People. There have been some changes now at the top of the casting, and while it's still a reunion, Dunst won't be a part of it.

Adam Scott, who also co-starred in Bachelorette, has joined the film, which stars Jason Sudeikis as “a womanizer who befriends a serial cheater, only for a romantic attraction to develop between them. Dunst has been forced to drop out due to scheduling, and in her place will be Community star Alison Brie. It's another solid move for the sought-after Brie, who recently agreed to join Kevin Hart and Will Ferrell in Get Hard.

Deals aren't set in stone just yet and Headland is hesitant to start celebrating about her talented cast...

Headland: "Films are always like, it may not happen, we'll see. Even going into the premiere of Bachelorette, I was like, 'It still may not happen'…I don't know if it's just being an assistant and having seen how the sausage is made, where you just sort of come at everything with this feeling of…'It's not set in stone, kids.' I've seen shit fall apart over less." [THR]

Trailer for 'The Two Faces of January' Starring Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen, and Oscar Isaac

Throughout his screenwriting career, Hossein Amini has excelled at literary adaptations, penning films based on the works of Thomas Hardy (Jude), Henry James (Oscar-nominated The Wings of the Dove), James Sallis (Drive), and more. It's helped him to become one of Hollywood's most successful writers, even delving into blockbuster territory on occasion, and so it makes sense that for his directorial debut Amini would turn to another cherished author to adapt. In this case it's Patricia Highsmith and her 1964 thriller, The Two Faces of January.

The first trailer and poster for the film have been released, which assembles the likes of Kirsten Dunst, Oscar Isaac, and Viggo Mortensen. Set in 1962, the story centers on an American couple, him a con artist, who find themselves on the run in Greece and must seek help from a mysterious guide. Tensions and passions rise as the trio pass from one gorgeous locale to the next in what looks like a solid potboiler.

The Two Faces of January opens in the U.K. on May 16th but is playing the Berlin Film Festival now. Hopefully we'll get it here later this year.

Kirsten Dunst Joins Jeff Nichols' 'Midnight Special'

I just got out of a screening of Lee Daniels' The Butler, which amongst about a thousand random cameos, featured a hangdog performance by John Cusack as Richard Nixon. Without giving away anything, it's pretty distracting, and it made me think of other unconventional choices to play Nixon, which sent me back to the Kirsten Dunst comedy, Dick, which had Dan Hedaya as "Tricky Dick" Nixon. Want to feel really old? That film was fourteen years ago (and had a cast to die for) and still holds up as one of Dunst's best. But with Melancholia, Bachelorette, and Upside Down, she's on a heck of a run, and it's about to get even better.

Dunst has joined sci-fi film Midnight Special, the latest from Take Shelter and Mud helmer Jeff Nichols. Starring his usual collaborator Michael Shannon, along with Joel Edgerton, the film's plot has been kept under wraps until now, with Deadline revealing the plot centers on "a father and his 8-year-old go on the run when dad realizes the boy has some kind of special powers." It's unclear at this point who is taking what role, or when production is set to begin. Presumably an actor for the child role will be found soon.

As if it's not exciting enough to see Nichols working with Warner Bros. on a major project such as this, it's in a new genre for him and the cast is superb. Hopefully we'll see Midnight Special some time in 2014. Dunst will be seen next opposite Viggo Mortensen and Oscar Isaac in The Two Faces of January, and will make a cameo as herself in Anchorman 2.

How could 'The Bling' Ring' get any better? Add Kirsten Dunst.

Gavin Rossdale is a pretty cool get, as we saw him on set of Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring yesterday. But Kirsten Dunst is friggin' amazing. Coppola's feature film debut, The Virgin Suicides, starred Dunst in a stirring performance, and the two would work together again a few years later in Marie Antoinette. Now it looks as if the two are back together as Dunst was spotted on set, and not looking like she was there for a social call.

The Bling Ring stars Emma Watson, Taissa Farmiga, Israel Broussard, Katie Chang, Leslie Mann, and a host of young talent in a film based on the Hollywood Hills Burglar Bunch, a group of celebrity obsessed teens who robbed the homes of famous people, including Brian Austin Green, Paris Hilton, and Orlando Bloom. Dunst wasn't one of their victims, but that doesn't necessarily mean she isn't playing herself. Expect the film to feature a number of celeb cameos.

Predictably, the gossip websites are all over this movie, so expect more photos to come.  [GossipCenter]

Sure Shots: The Hunger Games; Kirsten Dunst; Pacific Rim

* Lionsgate must be feelin' pretty good after the wave of good reviews for The Hunger Games' trailer. So much so that rumors are they're already at work trying to snag a writer for the sequel, Catching Fire. Gary Ross will be back to direct, and the studio is said to be aiming for Academy Award winning writer Simon Beaufoy(Slumdog Millionaire) to pen the script. He hasn't taken the job yet, so this is still pretty early, but it shows that enthusiasm for The Hunger Games is pretty high. The sequel, which is set for a March 9th 2012 release, expands on the world of Panem considerably, but I don't want to say more and spoil who comes out of the first film alive. [Deadline]

* Kirsten Dunst, Best Actress award winner? She's got my vote, thanks to her gripping performance in Melancholia, and I've been very happy that others are starting to take notice and give her roles that will make people forget she was ever in those Spider-Man movies. The latest addition to her slate is Red Light Winter, based on the play by Adam Rapp(Winter Passing). Starring Mark Ruffalo and Billy Crudup, the story centers on two friends who travel to Amsterdam to get away from their lives, only to have a sexy prostitute(Dunst) get between them. Sounds like another mature role for the actress, who has a number of interesting flicks on the way. Filming will kick off in January. [Thompson On Hollywood]

* If it wasn't enough that Pacific Rim sounds like the perfect film for Guillermo Del Toro to make his directing return to after what'll be five years at the time it comes out, but he gave us a drool worthy cast that promises it'll be one of the most fun films of that year. Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, and Max Martini are all lined up for the massive creature feature. But wait...isn't there an old Del Toro favorite who seems to be missing? Like say...Ron Perlman? No need to worry, as Del Toro recently revealed to Wired that his Hellboy star will have a role in the film, which chronicles a futuristic battle between humans and an invading swarm of monsters.

1st look at sci-fi romance, Upside Down, starring Kirsten Dunst and Jim Sturgess

Holy crap I had totally forgotten about this movie! I first wrote about Upside Down, the sci-fi romance starring Kirsten Dunst and Jim Sturgess, way back in October of 2009. That was around the time Dunst officially signed on, and I think it was then that Sturgess had won the lead role over Emile Hirsch. Directec by Juan Diego Solanas, Upside Down is the story of two childhood loves separated by living in alternate universes. The film recently wrapped shooting in Montreal, and French website Into the Screen has the first images, which you can check out below....

There's still some question as to when we might get a chance to see Upside Down here in our neck of the woods. The film is scheduled to be released in France some time in May 2011. Studio 37, the primary company producing the film, partnered up with a couple of other European investors to get the project made at a $50M budget. Warner Brothers is distributing the French release, so let's hope they'll bring it over here so we can check it out not too long after. You can check out the official plot synopsis below as well!

Adam is a seemingly ordinary guy in a very extraordinary universe. He lives humbly trying to make ends meet, but his romantic spirit holds on to the memory of a girl he met once upon a time from another world, an inverted affluent world with its own gravity, directly above but beyond reach… a girl named Eve. Their childhood flirtation becomes an impossible love. But when he catches a glimpse of grown?up Eve on television, nothing will get in the way of getting her back… Not even the law or science!

The New Wave: 12/10/10

What the heck is the guy who brought us The Lives of Others doing making a deliberately airy, light hearted thriller starring two of America's finest actors? Good question. Don't be fooled by the directing pedigree, The Tourist isn't meant to be taken seriously one bit. In fact it's a lot like taking a richly deserved vacation to Venice, with Jolie and Depp as your tour guides. My review of The Tourist can be found here.

The third time may be the charm, but The Chronicles of Narnia has been through the wringer. It's never a good thing when you make nearly a billion dollars and that's still not good enough to keep the studio happy. So what does Disney do? They pawn it off to the highest bidder, with Voyage of the Dawn Treader landing in the willing arms of Fox and Walden Media. The biggest move they made is still the addition of Michael Apted as director, who adds a level of stability and credibility the first two movies sorely lacked. My review can be found here.
Andrew Jarecki sure does love his family secrets, doesn't he? After bringing us the remarkable documentary Capturing the Friedmans just a few years ago, now he's back with his first narrative feature surrounding one of the country's most infamous missing person cases. Ryan Gosling's busy Oscar season continues as he plays the son of a wealthy real estate magnate, who finds himself a suspect in the sudden disappearance of his wife. Those who've been waiting for Kirsten Dunst to make a real transition to more mature flicks may be surprised at just how good she is here. I'd say if the Academy was considering anybody they might want to look her way. My review of All Good Things can be found here, and be sure to tune in to Punch Drunk Critics Live this Sunday for our interview with Andrew Jarecki!
You'd think that the presence of Jim Carrey and Ewen McGregor could help overcome some of I Love You Phillip Morris' less easily marketable traits, but apparently studios balked at that idea. The film struggled for months to find US distribution despite success in France earlier this year. Only the combined courage of Liddell Entertainment and Roadside Attractions were willing to bring this highly regarded true story of a con man who repeatedly breaks out of prison to be with the guy he loves....who he also met while behind bars. No time for a write-up on this one, but you'll be able to hear me and Tim Gordon banter about it this weekend on the show.
Photographer Marc Hogancamp was left with virtually no memory of his life after being attacked and beaten by five men outside of a bar back in 2000. When he woke up after nine days in a coma, he was left with nothing. Unable to afford therapy, he decided to heal himself by focusing his energy on building a WWII-era scale model town in his yard, and populating it with figures representing himself and his loved ones. When his work is discovered and splashed across Esopus magazine as "art", Marc has to decide if that's really the path he wants his fictional little town to take.

All Good Things

All Good Things is the type of film that bugs me the most. It features all the qualities necessary to make an oustanding picture: a talented, bright young cast; an eye catching true story of one of this country's most notorious missing person's cases; and an accomplished director with an insightful eye who specializes in just this type of material. Yet none of those pieces come together to make a satisying whole. A highly fictionalized account of the sordid life of Robert Durst, renamed David Marks(Ryan Gosling) for the film, and the 30 year mystery surrounding the sudden disappearance of his wife, Kathleen McCormack, renamed Katie McCarthy(Kirsten Dunst). The true story is a twisted journey social status, legal injustice, blackmail, and murder. The movie adequately portrays two of these things, but leaves way too much of the story on the cutting room floor.

David Marks was the son of a wealthy real estate magnate(Frank Langella) and part of the upper crust of New York society. Groomed to be an integral part of the family business, David never had the disposition to be a part of the social order. He wasn't exactly good with people, and never all that comfortable with his money and familial influence. David liked that his new, vivacious girlfriend Katie was a regular person. She wasn't impressed by his wealth, and her presence was enough to light up a room. Her smile was infectious and everybody liked her.

David and Katie struck out on their own, escaping the city life for a whole new beginning in the Vermont countryside. It doesn't last long, as good ol' dad convinces David to take on the family trade. This doesn't sit well with Katie, who begins building a life for herself by applying to medical school. David, perhaps unsettled in his own life, begins a rapid transformation. Where there was once a lovable, somewhat peculiar fellow now stands a cruel, heartless man with an anger pointed square at the woman he claims to love. Their fights intensify, the couple separates, but then one day Katie simply vanishes into thin air.

With the aid of his longtime best friend, Deborah Lehrman(the amazing Lily Rabe), David hightails it to Texas where an already strange situation gets downright weird. I'm talkin' cross dressing weird. I'm talkin' hetero lifemate with a grizzled old neighbor weird. The bodies start to pile up all around David's life, injustices of an imbalanced legal system always seem to tilt in his favor.

All Good Things marks the feature film debut of Andrew Jarecki, who burst onto the scene a few years ago with his documentary, Capturing the Friedmans. That film also focused on a well to-do family buried under a ton of secrets that threatened to ruin them all. Maybe Jarecki's calling is as a documentarian, where the truth is right there to be presented and never embellished. One of the many problems I have with All Good Things is that even though many of the details are in fact true, they are presented in a ridiculous fashion that makes them nearly impossible to believe. In particular David's stint dressing up as a mute woman is almost presented as dark comedy, like the Odd Couple caught in a murder mystery. The real life story starts in the 1970s and in a lot of ways is still going on today(there've been some fairly recent developments), and it's clear that there was a struggle deciding what needed to be shown and what could be left out.

What does work, however, is the performance by Kirsten Dunst. Rarely has she been given a chance to play a real role as an adult. She's been making some heavy film choices lately(she'll be in Lars Von Trier's next film for starters), but she still maintains her youthful looks and exuberance. It's absolutely essential that we fall in love with her character, known in real life to have been a beloved woman. Dunst is fantastic, and I look forward to seeing where her career goes from here. Gosling has been in a slump of late, but he appears to be getting on the right track. The problems I have with his performance as David Marks have more to do with the inadequacy of the script, which never delves deep enough into his transformation from loving husband to possible psycho.

A disappointing film like this makes me wonder how good it could be if Jarecki had maybe just turned it into a documentary? But then we'd be missing out on arguably Kirsten Dunst's best role in years, and that would be a shame.

Sure Shots: Kirsten Dunst; Tom Hanks

* After her amazing success last year with The Hurt Locker, it's imperative that Kathryn Bigelow prove it wasn't a fluke by following up with another hit. Who better to help her than the most successful actor of the last twenty years? Tom Hanks has signed on to star in Triple Frontier, “an ensemble picture set in the notorious border zone between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil where the Igazu and Parana rivers converge — making ‘la triple frontera’ difficult to monitor and a haven for organized crime.”

* I'm liking some of the choices Kirsten Dunst is making to rebuild her career. I thought she was the best part of All Good Things opposite Ryan Gosling, and she just finished wrapping up Melancholia for Lars Von Trier. After she finishes up On the Road by director Walter Salles, she'll be joining Chloe Moretz(Kick-Ass) in a film adaptation of Hick. Derek Martini will be directing the film, based on the novel by Andrea Portes.

Trailer Time: All Good Things, starring Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst

I never got a chance to see Andrew Jarecki's documentary, Why We Fight, but I was a huge fan of his Capturing the Friedmans. If you have a chance to check it out(and are ready to be shocked and appalled), add it to your Neflix queue right now. A year ago he made the move to feature films with All Good Things, based on the 1982 disappearance(and presumed murder) of Kathleen McCormack, wife of billionaire heir Robert Durst.

If you judged based solely on the first half of the trailer, you'd think it was your typical story of social class intruding on a couple's love. It doesn't look like anything special, but I expect the talents of Ryan Gosling(as Durst), Kirsten Dunst(as McCormack), and Frank Langella to raise the bar a bit.

All Good Things will release on December 3rd, 2010. Check out the trailer and let us know what you think of it!

Chaos Reigns! Kirsten Dunst Signs on to Lars Von Trier's MELANCHOLIA

My loyalty and devotion to Kirsten Dunst, admittedly, borders on the fanatical. No other actress has more movies stacked up in my collection than she does. I think if I look hard enough I've probably got 15 and Pregnant(co-starring Park Overall!!) buried in there somewhere. So when she signs on to a project, nobody follows it more closely than I, but in this case I have to admit being a little bit worried.

Dunst has recently signed on to star in maniacal director Lars Von Trier's upcoming "psychological disaster film", Melancholia. She'll be taking over the role once held by Penelope Cruz, who left in order to earn a fat paycheck in the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

Von Trier has gathered an impressive cast for the film, including 24's Kiefer Sutherland, Stellan Skarsgaard(Breaking the Waves) and his son Alexander Skarsgaard, and one of Von Trier's favorites, Charlotte Gainsbourg(Antichrist, The Science of Sleep). Anyone who's seen Von Trier's disturbing film, Antichrist, knows that some of his subject matter can be downright offensive and morally objectionable to some. I'm sure that Dunst, after having the relative ease of the Spider-Man films yanked out from under her, is looking to stretch herself in new ways, but jumping straight into a Von Trier film could be risky. It definitely makes for an odd pairing. I don't wanna see her snipping off any...*ahem*...private parts of her own body or anything. I got more than my fill of that watching Gainsbourg do it in Antichrist. The nightmares are still hanging around.

I don't know squat about Melancholia, but with that cast I really don't care. None of the trades seem to be able to nail down quite what it's about, but it definitely has a sci-fi bent, a departure for the minimalist director.

Say Bye-Bye to Spider-Man 4! Franchise Reboot in 2012!

Holy crap. With all the rumors flying around about delays and casting disputes between Sam Raimi and Sony, I never figured it'd go this far! Deadline.com is reporting that Sony has completely scrapped plans for Spider-Man 4. In the process, that means no more Sam Raimi. It also means no more Tobey Maguire. No John Malkovich. No nothing.

Apparently, Sam Raimi notified Sony that he could not make the 2011 release date so he was pulling out completely. Once that was his stance, they decided to pull a complete 180 and start anew. Maguire found out and left to pursue other projects rather than start over with a new director. Plans are now for a total franchsie reboot in 2012, based on a script by Jamie Vanderbilt.

This is huge. A Spider-Man reboot means it's likely that they will start over fresh with Peter Parker in high school. Look for an up 'n coming star to take on the highly coveted role. It also means that any rival studios who were worried about competing against Spider-Man next year need no longer fret. We already saw how Thor jumped quickly into Spider-Man's old slot when it appeared the film was only to be delayed. Expect more such announcements in the future.

No More Mary Jane in Spider-Man 4?

I file this under 'B' for bullpucky. Starpulse.com, which is about as believable as my German accent, is reporting from unnamed a"sources" that Kirsten Dunst is set to be written out of the Spideyverse, and Anne Hathaway is to take over as Tobey Maguire's love interest.  The quotage...

A source says, "The plan is for her character to be written out, probably by dying.

"Anne will take over as Peter Parker's new love interest for this project and for "Spider-Man 5" and "Spider-Man 6" which are being written now.

"Anne's in L.A. doing a lot of meetings on the movie, because filming is right around the corner."

Rumors, especially in regards to Spider-Man 4 are a dime a dozen, but this one has less credibility than most. First of all, they'd never let a a decision this huge spill out so far ahead of the film's release. Second, recent news points to the fact that Sam Raimi is in dispute with the studio over the scripting of Spidey 4, so the idea that 5 & 6 are already being prepped is ludicrous. I take this one not just with a grain of salt, but a whole damn salt shaker.

Producers Want Anne Hathaway...for Spider-Man 4

Ok, now it's just getting ridiculous. Yesterday it was Julia Stiles looking for a starring role in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4. Today, it's Anne Hathaway(Bride Wars, Ella Enchanted). Deadline.com is reporting that producers for the big budget superhero flick are seriously pushing to get Anne Hathaway for "a starring role". Whether or not that role is as Spidey villain/girlfriend/lust object the Black Cat is anyone's guess. Considering that all of the actresses named are of a similar age and "look"(although Hathaway has dark hair she's been blond before) it's likely they are all up for the same part.

I got an idea. Let's get a nice big ring, fill it with cream corn, and let all of these ladies duke it out until only one is left standing. You'd think we were talking about a remake of Casablanca or something, not the 4th installment of a superhero franchise coming off it's worst film.

Curt Connors Confirmed in Spider-Man 4, But What About The Lizard?

The best thing about comic book movies, other than seeing my childhood heroes brought to life on the big screen, are the rumors and speculation that swirl with every bit of information that hits the 'net. The Spider-Man franchise, while one of the fathers of the bunch, certainly hasn't been exempt from that. This 4th installment seems to be churning out even more grist for the rumor mill than most. Case in point: during a Q&A following a showing of Trick 'r Treat, Dylan Baker was asked a few questions regarding his role as Dr. Curt Connors in the Spider-Man films. Baker let it be known that he had gotten his first call in regards to the film that very day.

Us super nerds already know the deal with Connors. In the comics, Dr. Curt Connors soon becomes one of Spider-Man's chief enemies, The Lizard. Certainly his presence i nthe last two Spidey flicks has been one great big tease so far, and one would assume that eventually it has to pay off. But will it be this movie? Speculation has been that it'll be a host of villains who take on the wall crawler this go 'round, but nothing's confirmed. A few months ago, producer Todd Black let it slip that the villain for the film would be "a big part of New York". I'm not sure if the Lizard fits that description. However, if the plan is to have Spidey tackling some version of The Sinister Six, then the Lizard's inclusion is almost assured.

UGO has more on the story here.
