'The X-Files' Could Be Returning to TV with Mulder and Scully; Fox Eyes '24' Series Minus Jack Bauer

The dismal response to 2008's The X-Files: I Want to Believe wasn't enough to curb fans' appetites for further adventures with Mulder and Scully. While the poor box office wasn't going to convince 20th Century Fox to invest in another cinematic effort, the desire for a new TV series hasn't slowed in the least. And now all of those fans who kept hope alive could be rewarded with The X-Files' return.

According to Deadline, Fox TV's Gary Newman confirmed that series creator Cris Carter is in talks to bring The X-Files back to television. What form it would take is unclear but chances are it would be a limited "event" series in the vein of 24: Live Another Day which performed extraordinarily well for the network. Even better, it seems David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are both on board for a comeback, because let's face it nobody wants to see The X-Files without them. It's all going to boil down to scheduling, and so far the talks haven't even reached the creative stage yet. In other words it could be awhile before everything comes together.

Meanwhile, Fox is also looking into continuing the 24 franchise after the success of 24: Live Another Day, but it may be happening without Kiefer Sutherland's Jack Bauer. Series producers have pitched to Fox a limited series that would follow the other characters in Bauer's dangerous world, but not necessarily Bauer himself. The project has the support of Sutherland, who is more than happy to take on another run of saving the world as Bauer in a future series. Fox TV's Dana Walden says “there is a point at which Jack Bauer could come in and fit organically into the story, or they are prepared to do… one installment without him."

Having a 24 without Jack Bauer would be like The X-Files without Mulder and Scully. It may be in the same world but audiences relate to that world through these specific characters. Not sure it's a sound idea but this is all just in the "idea" stages now and may not come to pass.

'24' Movie Talks Rumored to be Heating Up Again

Ever since 24 ended its initial run back in 2010, fans have firmly believed the story of badass CTU agent Jack Bauer was far from over. The only question was how that story would continue to be told. A feature film had been developing for awhile, with Billy Ray (Shattered Glass, Breach) and Mark Bomback (The Wolverine) working on the script and Antoine Fuqua eying the director's chair for a 2012 shoot. But for various reasons the project never got off the ground, and when the 12-episode 24: Live Another Day was ordered up there seemed no need for a movie. But now the series is over and everybody wants more Jack Bauer, and they may finally get it on the big screen.

According to TVLine, talks have picked up again for a 24 movie, largely due to the ratings success of 24: Live Another Day. Imagine Entertainment and producer Brian Grazer are high on the idea of a movie again, but talks are said to be complicated because Fox is considering another season. And that has always been sort of the sticking point, hasn't it? 24 never truly felt gone so a movie never was really given the space it needed to develop. That doesn't seem to be the case now, either.

What it sounds like is we'll get at least one more 24: LAD miniseries and then a movie may follow, which basically keeps us at square one. Given how many years this movie has been talked about I wouldn't hold my breath until something is confirmed by 20th Century Fox.

'24: Live Another Day' Trailer Hits!

Confession time...I've never watched 24 religiously. Sure, an episode here and there, but for whatever reason I never really got into it. If this trailer for 24: Live Another Day is any indication of the original series I may have to reconsider my stance on Jack Bauer. From what we can tell Jack has been underground for four years and resurfaces during a Presidential trip to London to thwart an attempt on the President's life. Of course, it can't be that simple. Jack is setup to look like he's the one trying to kill the Prez so his job becomes infinitely more difficult. Extra points for including Yvonne Strahovski back in a government agent type role, sure, she was fine in Dexter but we all love Yvonne for her work on Chuck. Outside of that the rest of the cast looks phenomenal and, as I stated before, the action and plot are enough to make me reconsider adding 24 to my netflix queue. Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think!

First Full Trailer for '24: Live Another Day'

We've seen some cleverly framed teasers for Fox's 12-episode miniseries event, 24: Live Another Day, and now Jack Bauer returns in the first full trailer. Kiefer Sutherland, in the role he seems to have been born to play (to the point where I can't see him as anything else), returns as Jack, who is now a fugitive in London on the run from the CIA. They see him as a potential threat, but of course he's really out there trying to stop the next terrorist plot. Perhaps even more interesting is the subplot involving Jack's confidante, Chloe O'Brien (Mary Lynn Rajskub), who appears to have been pushed over the edge. We also get a look at Benjamin Bratt as the head of the task force assigned to bring Jack in.

24: Live Another Day premieres May 12th.

Review: 'Pompeii' Starring Kit Harington and Emily Browning

Knowing exactly how a disaster movie is going to end hasn't stopped Hollywood from making them. Pearl Harbor and most obviously Titanic are the clearest examples of films we know are going to end with practically none of the principle characters walking away, and yet some love these movies as inevitably tragic romances. And now you can throw Pompeii into the mix, a lava-filled historical action flick from Resident Evil director Paul W.S. Anderson. Blending the swords 'n sandals combat of Gladiator with the doomed love affair of Titanic, we could probably fill the Roman Colosseum with all the corny clichés until the volcano erupts and destroys everything.

Game of Thrones star Kit Harington packs on some serious muscle as Milo, a Celtic slave held as a gladiatorial combatant by his Roman captors. Flashbacks take us back to Milo's childhood, when his family and entire village were wiped out by the evil senator Corvus (Kiefer Sutherland), filling the boy with a lust for revenge. Now an adult, he's been sent to Pompeii where he'll continue to serve and fight. But during the trek, he encounters the broken down carriage of Cassia (Emily Browning), the daughter of Pompeii's head family (Stephen Harris and Carrie-Anne Moss). Milo's soft features and humane treatment of her injured horse melts Cassia's heart, but obviously any love between them can never be due to their stations in life.

Just in time for Mt. Vesuvius to start rumbling, Corvus arrives in Pompeii as an emissary of Emperor Titus. Looking to strike some sort of business deal, he uses his position to try and worm his way back into Cassia's life after they shared some sort of history back in Rome. Meanwhile, Milo becomes reluctant friends with Atticus (Adewale Akkinnuoye-Agbaje), a champion gladiator one victory away from freedom. It's all very Gladiator-lite up to this point, but it's entertaining in a cheesy, predictable sort of way. And really, it would work perfectly fine as such without the intrusion of the erupting volcano, which arrives and renders literally everything we just watched as meaningless.

Anderson shows surprising restraint for a good deal of the film, holding off on many of the big set pieces until the lava starts flowing. There are a number of solid sword clashes, in which Harington gets to show off his well-versed combat skills from Game of Thrones, and despite the PG-13 rating they are sufficiently brutal and bloody. Harington gets plenty of opportunity to show off his glistening abs and glistening locks, although his romance with Browning lacks any true spark. Once Vesuvius blows, Anderson gets to show off the talent for visual effects spectacles he's always been known for. More than lava threatens to destroy the city as Anderson hurls giant fireballs, rains burning ash, and unleashes a deadly tsunami that would have Noah racing to build another ark. These are captured in epic fashion, seen from up close and afar to encapsulate the entirety of the devastation.

If looked at merely as an action film, Pompeii has all the technical merits, rippling muscles, and chariot battles one could ask for, but as a romance it's something of a disaster itself.

Trav's Tip: For more on Pompeii, check out my interview with star Kit Harington.

Jack is Back in First Trailer for '24: Live Another Day'

The Super Bowl may have really crapped the bed last night, but Fox still won out with their tantalizing teases for 24: Live Another Day. When the explosive, slo-mo full trailer was finally revealed, showing Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer carrying a pissed off Chloe O'Brien (Mary Lynn Rajskub) in the midst of a war zone, it was more than worth the wait. The 12-episode series takes place four years after the last episode, and finds Jack in London on the run from the CIA.

24: Live Another Day debuts on May 5th, co-starring Benjamin Bratt, John Boyega, Yvonne Strahovski, and Tate Donovan.

'24: Live Another Day' gets May Premiere Date as Yvonne Strahovski Joins

Four years after the last time Jack Bauer came to the United States' rescue, he's back to live another day. Fox has announced that 24: Live Another Day will premiere on May 5th with a two-hour special, with the 12-episode miniseries airing every Monday at 9pm ET. The reborn series will of course mark the return of Bauer, played by the Kiefer Sutherland for eight seasons. Others due to return are popular co-star Mary Lynn Rajskub as the always-agitated techie Chloe O'Brian, Kim Raver, and William Devane. Yvonne Strahovski (Chuck) will come aboard as a CIA agent hot on Bauer's trail.

Maintaining the real-time format the show was famous for, the story takes place largely in London four years since we last saw Bauer. When the story begins he's a fugitive, a wanted man being pursued by Strahovski's character. Chloe has gone rogue, as well, becoming a free information extremist that will probably draw some parallels to Edward Snowden. Everything will take place over the course of a single day, told throughout the 12 episodes.

I watched 24 through every single season, and even when it wasn't great it was always entertaining. That's pretty much all I expect from 24: Live Another Day, and if it does well I won't be surprised if talk of a full revival starts back up. Maybe this will be the kick in the pants needed to get the 24 film back on track.

Fiery New Trailer for 'Pompeii' Starring Kit Harington and Emily Browning

Between 300: Rise of an Empire and Pompeii, there are going to be a lot of muscle-bound gladiators in loincloths and armor on the big screen. But unlike the former, Pompeii doesn't have the benefit of a hit film to springboard off of. All it has is Resident Evil director Paul W.S. Anderson; the name of a city city everyone remembers from history class; and at least judging by this new trailer, an awful lot of CGI lava.

Starring Game of Thrones' Kit Harington, the film centers on Milo, a slave in the titular doomed city who must rescue the woman he loves (Emily Browning) and his best friend (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbage) when Mt. Vesuvius erupts. Jared Harris, Kiefer Sutherland, Paz Vega, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jessica Lucas co-star with a script by Downton Abbey's Julian Fellowes, so perhaps there's more to it than the trailer suggests?

Pompeii burns down theaters on February 21st 2014.

Kiefer Sutherland is the villain in Paul W.S. Anderson's 'Pompeii'

Although Kiefer Sutherland and the show's fans were gung-ho for it, the 24 movie doesn't look like it's ever going to happen. He's still busy enough with his new Fox series, Touch, and keeping his presence large on the big screen as well by joining Paul W. S. Anderson's brewing disaster film, Pompeii.

THR reports that Sutherland will join Kit Harington, Emily Browning, and Jared Harris in the 3D spectacle, set during the famous two-day volcanic eruption that destroyed the titular Roman city. Harington plays Milo, a slave who loves a merchant's daughter, and must rescue her along with his gladiator best friend when Mt. Vesuvius erupts. Sutherland is the primary villain, a Roman senator forcing the merchant to give him his daughter's hand in marriage.

Sutherland was last seen on the big screen in Melancholia, and will appear in Mira Nair's The Reluctant Fundamentalist.

Kiefer Sutherland reveals '24' start date; Mary Lynn Rajskub to return?

Even  before Jack Bauer took himself off the grid after saving the United States for the umpteenth time in the final season of 24, talk had already begun that the hit series would return on the silver screen.  It was confirmed by Sutherland and the show producers not long after, but progress has been slow going. The initial script by super talented writer Billy Ray(Breach) was rejected, and Tony Scott came aboard in some unknown capacity. Meanwhile there's been no casting, the start date keeps getting bumped around, and a general lack of direction.

While talking about his new Fox series, Touch, Sutherland also provided an update on 24, stating that the plan is for production to begin in April or May. The story will jump ahead about six months from the series finale, presumably with Bauer still off on his own. That's good, because every woman he gets involved with is either a traitor or turns up dead. The newest draft of the script by Mark Bomback will be in keeping with the tone of the show, covering a 24 hour period in time, although obviously in condensed fashion. Sorry, folks. We won't actually be sitting in the theater for 24 hours. I know. What a ripoff!

If Sutherland and producer Howard Gordon are expecting to get the ball rolling that soon, then the casting process will need to get underway immediately. So far nobody is confirmed other than Sutherland, but Gordon says that Mary Lynn Rajskub's popular 'Chloe' character will appear. [TV Line]

Chaos Reigns! Kirsten Dunst Signs on to Lars Von Trier's MELANCHOLIA

My loyalty and devotion to Kirsten Dunst, admittedly, borders on the fanatical. No other actress has more movies stacked up in my collection than she does. I think if I look hard enough I've probably got 15 and Pregnant(co-starring Park Overall!!) buried in there somewhere. So when she signs on to a project, nobody follows it more closely than I, but in this case I have to admit being a little bit worried.

Dunst has recently signed on to star in maniacal director Lars Von Trier's upcoming "psychological disaster film", Melancholia. She'll be taking over the role once held by Penelope Cruz, who left in order to earn a fat paycheck in the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

Von Trier has gathered an impressive cast for the film, including 24's Kiefer Sutherland, Stellan Skarsgaard(Breaking the Waves) and his son Alexander Skarsgaard, and one of Von Trier's favorites, Charlotte Gainsbourg(Antichrist, The Science of Sleep). Anyone who's seen Von Trier's disturbing film, Antichrist, knows that some of his subject matter can be downright offensive and morally objectionable to some. I'm sure that Dunst, after having the relative ease of the Spider-Man films yanked out from under her, is looking to stretch herself in new ways, but jumping straight into a Von Trier film could be risky. It definitely makes for an odd pairing. I don't wanna see her snipping off any...*ahem*...private parts of her own body or anything. I got more than my fill of that watching Gainsbourg do it in Antichrist. The nightmares are still hanging around.

I don't know squat about Melancholia, but with that cast I really don't care. None of the trades seem to be able to nail down quite what it's about, but it definitely has a sci-fi bent, a departure for the minimalist director.

Jack Bauer...Movie Star! Fox Hires Writer to Pen 24 Script

A big screen action film starring the cast of 24 has been rumored about for years. The show has been one of Fox's biggest hits since it debuted back in 2001, and a film starring the one man army known as Jack Bauer seems like a logical course of action, not to mention a box office winner. 24 has a huge following not just here in America but across the globe. While the rumors died down somewhat after Fox produced a made-for-TV film that served as a prequel to Season 8, it looks like Kiefer Sutherland and Fox are prepared to go full steam ahead.

Fox has hired Billy Ray to script a big screen film adventure for Jack Bauer, due to be set in Europe. This is already a departure from the show, which is primarily focused in either Los Angeles or Washington, DC. Studio execs say that the film obviously won't use the show's real-time structure, but will encapsulate one day into a two hour block.

Billy Ray has been a favorite of mine ever since he made Hayden Christensen seem credible in Shattered Glass back in 2003. He's since made a career of taut, mature political thrillers such as State of Play and Breach. So he's a perfect choice to handle this project. The only thing that could make it better would be if Paul Greengrass came on as director. Fat chance of that happening.
