Bill Murray to Sing Christmas Carols in Sofia Coppola-Directed Holiday Special

The last time Bill Murray and Sofia Coppola hooked up the result was Lost in Translation, one of the actor's most acclaimed performances. It's also one of my personal favorites and features my favorite Murray scene ever...

So I dig it when Murray grabs the mic and busts out a tune, and his Christmas comedy Scrooged is pretty much required viewing each year. Which is why it's cool to learn Murray and Coppola will be reteaming on a holiday project for television that will see the actor singing Christmas carols. He tells Variety....

"It’s not going to be live.  We’re going to do it like a little movie.  It won’t have a format, but it’s going to have music. It will have texture.  It will have threads through it that are writing.  There will be prose… It will have a patina style and wit to it.  It will be nice.”

Pretty vague, and Coppola's confirmation doesn't make things any clearer.

“We’re working on a Christmas special.  Not sure when it will air, but my motivation is to hear him singing my song requests."

Yeah, let's make this happen. Chances are it won't be ready by this Christmas, but you one can hope.

Sofia Coppola to Direct Live-Action 'The Little Mermaid'

The story of a girl who makes a huge life-changing decision in a desperate bid to find love? It sounds like something indie filmmaker Sofia Coppola would be well-suited for, and she's going to tell that story, not in another art house drama, but as director of a live-action version of The Little Mermaid.

Deadline reports the Lost in Translation and The Bling Ring director will take over for Joe Wright on the long-developing film about a mermaid who is granted her wish to live on land after falling in love. Wright had been attached for quite some time but with him now directing Pan, perhaps he felt one fairy tale was enough.

Abi Morgan (Shame) wrote the first draft of the script, described at the time as sticking closer to Hans Christian Anderson's dark fable than the popular animated Disney movie. Kelly Marcel took a crack at the script, only to have Caroline Thompson (Edward Scissorhands) take over.

This will be the biggest project Coppola's ever undertaken and an obvious gear shift for her, so it will be interesting to see how she handles it.

Sofia Coppola Heads to 'Fairyland'

Sofia Coppola's famous daddy Francis Ford Coppola has scooped up the rights to Alysia Abbott's novel, Fairyland: A Memoir of My Father. While the plan right now is for his daughter Sofia Coppola to co-write the script only, the subject matter, dealing with a young girl and her famous father, sounds like a perfect fit for her sensibilities.

Coppola, who last directed the celebrity crime film The Bling Ring, will pen the script with Andrew Durham, the producer of her debut short, Lick the Star. Roman Coppola will also get in on the producing action, with the film centering on a young girl living in San Francisco with her bisexual father, a poet and gay rights activist, during the height of the AIDS epidemic.

Sounds right up her alley, and it's worth noting that Coppola has directed every script she's ever written. Chances are she'll end up behind the camera for Fairyland, as well.

Emma Watson digs the club scene in new trailer for 'The Bling Ring'

"America has this sick fascination with the Bonnie & Clyde thing". The obsession with celebrity culture has been a recurring theme in Sofia Coppola's films throughout her career, usually seen through the lens of a woman trying to find her place in the world. Rather than merely touching on that theme, it's what The Bling Ring is all about, and how the need for fifteen minutes of fame can turn criminal really fast.

A new trailer for the film has been released, putting star Emma Watson front and center as the leader of a gang of Beverly Hills kids who broke into the homes of their favorite celebs and made away with more than $3M in stolen loot. The footage gives a better look at their time living the high life, hitting all of the parties where the hottest tabloid celebs hang out. Despite consistent critical acclaim, Coppola's films don't typically turn up in multiplexes. With Emma Watson playing against type and a story that looks to skewer Hollywood, this might be Coppola's biggest box office hit yet.

Starring Leslie Mann, Taissa Farmiga, Paris Hilton, Kirsten Dunst, and Gavin Rossdale, The Bling Ring opens on June 14th.

*UPDATE* New photos, plus Emma Watson pole dances in first clip from 'The Bling Ring'

*Updated with a bunch of new photos of everyone but Emma Watson. I think the video of her dancing will more than suffice, though. *

There has never been any doubt that Emma Watson's career choices have led her about as far away from Harry Potter as possible. The film that will probably have people asking "What happened to our little Hermione?" the most is Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring, and in the first clip we see exactly why.

Based on a true story that was all the rage over at E! and TMZ, it follows a group of Beverly Hills kids who took to robbing celebrity homes, both out of their celebrity obsession and need to fuel their racy lifestyle. In this clip we get a look at one of their break-ins, leading to Watson twirling around a stripper pole like a pro. She leads a group of mostly unknown young stars including Taissa Farmiga and Israel Broussard, with Leslie Mann, Kirsten Dunst, Paris Hilton, and Gavin Rossdale also making appearances. Hilton was the most high-profile victim of what was then known as the "Beverly Hills Burglar Bunch".

The Bling Ring goes right for your wallet on June 14th.

First teaser for "The Bling Ring" with Emma Watson drops

Because Friday is a beautiful, wonderful day when dreams come true, today marks the first teaser trailer for Sofia Coppola's upcoming film, The Bling Ring. Coppola's first film since 2010's Somewhere, The Bling Ring is about a group of teens and young adults who from 2008 to 2009 went "shopping" at the homes of celebrities. As in ... they broke in and stole a bunch of shit. That's resourceful, I guess.

Anyway, years later, it's now time to make a movie about those crafty kids. Emma Watson stars, and in this trailer, she's looking particularly saucy and beautiful and wonderful and totally not at all like Hermione Granger. She's basically the biggest name in the cast, which also includes Leslie Mann and Taissa Farmiga.

The Bling Ring comes out June 24, 2013. For the trailer, click through!

New image of Emma Watson in 'The Bling Ring'

"Nicki likes Lip Gloss, Purses, Yoga, Pole Dancing, Uggs, Louboutins, Juice Cleanses, Iced coffee and Tattoos."

That's how Emma Watson describes her character, Nicki, from Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring, tweeting the above pic of herself wearing the luckiest pink track suit ever. Wish fulfillment: If I die I'd like to be reincarnated as that tracksuit.

We've seen a number of set photos from the film shoot already, and as you might expect for a film based on the true story of the spoiled teens known as the Hollywood Hills Burglar Bunch, it was a celebrity laden affair. Gavin Rossdale and Kirsten Dunst were spotted on set, with Paris Hilton rumored to have a role in the film, likely as herself. Hilton was reportedly the group's first target, because...well, she's stupid. So they assumed she'd have a lot of cash and valuables lying around her home. They weren't wrong, and they stole over $2M from her house before she even noticed it.

Filming is all but wrapped up, so I'm guessing we'll see this early next year. Taissa Farmiga, Leslie Mann, Israel Broussard, Claire Pfister, Georgia Rock, and Carlos Miranda co-star. By the way, the original film based on The Bling Ring was on TV last night, but you can pick it up for cheap on DVD as well.

Emma Waton rockin' a mean tramp stamp in Sofia Coppola's 'The Bling Ring'!

Is there anything better than a good girl gone bad? Oh I'll just come out and say it, Emma Watson is even hotter when she tarts it up a little bit. As if she wasn't fine enough, the Harry Potter starlet is scorching rockin' a tramp stamp, a mean leather jacket, and a teeny tiny pair of shorts. If there was ever any doubt that she's moved on from the world of safe family movies, the amount of skin she's showing in these latest snaps from the set of Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring should put all that to rest.

Based on the true story of the Hollywood Burglar Bunch, a group of spoiled teens who robbed the homes of wealthy celebs, The Bling Ring is currently filming in Los Angeles and is expected to have a number of famous faces turning up. We've already seen Gavin Rossdale and Kirsten Dunst on set in what will likely be cameos, possibly playing themselves. Leslie Mann, Taissa Farmiga, Israel Broussard, and Katie Chang co-star alongside Watson. Check out the racy new photos for your, courtesy of Comingsoon...

How could 'The Bling' Ring' get any better? Add Kirsten Dunst.

Gavin Rossdale is a pretty cool get, as we saw him on set of Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring yesterday. But Kirsten Dunst is friggin' amazing. Coppola's feature film debut, The Virgin Suicides, starred Dunst in a stirring performance, and the two would work together again a few years later in Marie Antoinette. Now it looks as if the two are back together as Dunst was spotted on set, and not looking like she was there for a social call.

The Bling Ring stars Emma Watson, Taissa Farmiga, Israel Broussard, Katie Chang, Leslie Mann, and a host of young talent in a film based on the Hollywood Hills Burglar Bunch, a group of celebrity obsessed teens who robbed the homes of famous people, including Brian Austin Green, Paris Hilton, and Orlando Bloom. Dunst wasn't one of their victims, but that doesn't necessarily mean she isn't playing herself. Expect the film to feature a number of celeb cameos.

Predictably, the gossip websites are all over this movie, so expect more photos to come.  [GossipCenter]

Leslie Mann, Israel Broussard and a host of newcomers join Sofia Coppola's 'The Bling Ring'

Sofia Coppola isn't wasting any time casting up her next film centered on Hollywood excess, The Bling Ring. With Emma Watson and Taissa Farmiga already in place, Coppola is adding not only a veteran comedic presence, but also a handful of newcomers getting their big break.

Leslie Mann(Knocked Up), aka Mrs. Judd Apatow is the latest to join the film based on the true story of a bunch of teens known as the Hollywood Hills Burglar Bunch aka The Bling Ring who robbed the homes of wealthy celebrities. Mann will play the mother of two of the girls in the group, probably Alexis and Gabrielle Neiers. Continuing her trend of hyping undiscovered talent, Coppola has cast Israel Broussard(Flipped, The Chaperone) as the male lead. Katie Chang, Claire Pfister and Georgia Rock will be making their feature film debuts.

Filming will begin in the spring, so it's unlikely we'll see it by the end of the year. I hate to see it end up in early 2013 as it will be forgotten come awards season, but we'll just have to wait and see. The addition of Mann makes me think this may be more of a comedy or satire than originally thought. [THR]

Sofia Coppola adds Taissa Farmiga to the 'Bling Ring'

I look at every Sofia Coppola film as an event, the way some folks used to look at every George Lucas film the same way. So when it was announced that her next project would be Bling Ring, based on the spoiled teens known as the Hollywood Hills Burglar Bunch, it jumped immediately past everything else to the film I'm most looking forward to.

Showing yet again that Coppola is committed to shepherding young, up 'n coming actresses through her movies, Taissa Farmiga is the latest to join the cast, right on the heels of yesterday's signing of Emma Watson to the lead role.  Bearing a spooky resemblance to her older sister, Vera Farmiga, Taissa played a younger version of her in Higher Ground. She starred in the first season of FX's hit, American Horror Story. Her role in Bling Ring is unclear, as is Watson's.

Variety, who broke the news, also reveal that Farmiga has taken a part in Jamesy Boy, a film we first mentioned a week ago when James Woods, Ving Rhames, and Mary-Louise Parker joined the cast. Another film based on a true story, it follows a suburban gang member who becomes friends with a convicted murderer while in prison. Newcomer Spencer Lofranco will play the main character, with Farmiga as a love interest.

Filming on Jamesy Boy is set to begin in just a few days, and after that she'll jump right into Bling Ring. She should have plenty of time since American Horror Story is totally recasting for the upcoming season. I'm curious to see how Coppola approaches a story such as this, as it doesn't seem to fit the model of some of her more serene stuff like Lost in Translation or Somewhere. Perhaps she'll take a more carefree and colorful approach similar to Marie Antoinette?

Emma Watson makes her boldest move yet, joining Sofia Coppola's 'Bling Ring'

Daniel Radcliffe can tout the success of The Woman in Black as his big move away from the world of Harry Potter. That's all well and good, but nothing compared to what Emma Watson has been doing lately, taking on films that may cause people to forget she ever played Hermione at all.  After a small role in My Week With Marilyn, she took the lead an adaptation of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. She'll reteam with her Harry Potter director David Yates for Your Voice in My Head, based on the memoir by Emma Forrest. And just a couple of weeks ago she signed on to Guillermo Del Toro's upcoming take on Beauty and the Beast.

All that pales to what she has next, as Variety reports she'll take the lead in Sofia Coppola's latest exploration of the Hollywood privileged, Bling Ring.  The true life story, which we first learned about last December, would center on the Hollywood Hills Burglar Bunch aka the 'Bling Ring', who took to robbing the homes of celebrities. Megan Fox, Lindsay Lohan, and Orlando Bloom were just a few of their victims. The group included Alexis Neiers, one of the stars of the E! reality series, Pretty Wild. It remains to be seen if her sister, Tess Taylor, will make an appearance in the film as has been previously stated.

This is a move that makes sense on a number of levels. Coppola has always had a knack for finding strong, young female actresses to center her films around. She did it for Kirsten Dunst, Scarlett Johansson, Elle Fanning, and now Watson will get her shot.

Somewhere

Sofia Coppola makes movies for a specific audience, and I count myself as one of her most rabid supporters. From the moment I saw her short film, Lick the Star, she was somebody I knew I had to follow whether she was the daughter of Francis Ford Coppola or not. From The Virgin Suicides on, she's been able to capture a surreal , dreamlike mood in everything she's ever done. Her crowning achievement, the serene Lost in Translation, ranks as one of the few films I consider to be completely flawless. Despite my appreciation for her work, I knew there'd come a time where her deliberate style would rub me the wrong way. The biggest complaint about her films is that very little actually happens in most of them, in terms of overt twists and ramping tension. While that may be true, none of her movies can ever be considered boring. Somewhere, which explores the repetitive and mundane nature of celebrity, comes dangerously close. But then again, that might've been the point.

Taking her typical laid back approach to filmmaking, Coppola idles her camera on Johnny Marco(Stephen Dorff), a Hollywood hot shot caught up in the minutia that is his life. He goes from his sweet digs at the Chateau Marmont off to the set for fittings; he does inane press junkets with people he can't stand; and spends the rest of his day sitting by the pool. Oh wait, that's not quite right. He also can't sleep without first watching his favorite pair of pole dancers, brought up to his room to entertain him with their routine each and every night. So "blah" to it all that Johnny doesn't even really seem to care as he watches the two dancers shake their moneymakers. This scene sets the tone for the entire film, so if you can't make it through that then you might as well pack it in early and go see Little Fockers or something. Johnny's rut continues until the unexpected arrival of estranged daughter, Cleo(Elle Fanning), arrives on his doorstep to break the monotony.

At first, Johnny seems like the worst possible choice to be put in charge of anybody's kid, much less his own. His life is an exercise in frivolous excess, with little to no responsibility other than to wake up and arrive on time wherever his studio masters want him.  Cleo's presence puts Johnny's life into laser focus. The shallowness of his celebrity life fades gently into the background as he strives to forge a meaningful bond with the daughter he barely seems to know.

In Lost and Translation, Coppola explored with shocking honesty facets of her own real life failed marriage. Whether or not Somewhere is tapping into some element of her life growing up isn't nearly as obvious, but there's a credibility to Somewhere that keeps it interesting even when nothing seems to be going on. The bulk of the film follows Johnny and Cleo as they go through rather mundane tasks, like eating breakfast. The difference now is that Johnny has someone to share these moments in his life with.Cleo, in turn, has the presence of her father, a relationship Coppola clearly believes is essential to any girl's upbringing.

Coppola's style is so chill, so relaxing, that I could just hang out with them all day, but that approach isn't for everybody. There are moments when her camera lingers just a little too long, and it's not always a rush watching people eat breakfast or play Guitar Hero. Coppola never wastes a shot, though. Every scene serves a purpose, and the reason for the extended nature of certain scenes is to put us squarely in Johnny's shoes. We need to feel the general malaise of his life.  We need to be in Johnny's state of mind for any of this to work. I only wish that once we are put in the position of understanding where Johnny is coming from, we'd get more of a chance to see him evolve. It all happens rather suddenly.

For Dorff, this is something of a breakthrough for him. He's been solid in the past, but rarely has so much of the dramatic weight been placed on his shoulders. Embodying the cluelessness of the insta-celeb perfectly, Dorff has never been better. Elle Fanning is proving to be just as capable, if not superior, actress to her older sister Dakota. She is the story's true heart and soul, precocious, yet unsure at the same time. There's a layer of fear, the fear of abandonment or rejection, just beneath the surface that is tragic.

I had to watch Somewhere a couple of times to truly understand and enjoy it. It's not a movie that's going to "Wow" audiences or break the bank at the box office. It's going to appeal to certain folks who will simply adore it, while the rest will brush it off as pretentious. I can't count myself as a member of either camp, but definitely leaning towards the former. If you love the way Coppola builds entire stories out of the quietest moments, then Somewhere is definitely for you.

DREAMGIRLS Director to Helm The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn?

It's looking more and more likely that The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn is going to get that A-list director Summit Entertainment has been desperately seeking. A few weeks ago there was a story that Summit had approached a number of top notch candidates to direct the final two films that would comprise Breaking Dawn. That list included Sofia Coppola(Lost in Translation), Bill Condon(Dreamgirls), Gus Van Sant(Paranoid Park), and Fernando Meirelles(City of God). Now Deadline is reporting that Condon has emerged as the lead dog to secure the job.

Condon has apparently had discussions with the studio that went very well, and he's been given the seal of approval by Twilight creator, Stephanie Meyer.

Well, Condon is certainly an interesting choice. I still think Coppola would be the best fit creatively, but I think it might actually be too high profile for her. From what I've heard, Breaking Dawn is an absolutely wild story, so I'm curious to see how he is going to approach it if all this pans out.

A-List Directors Being Approached to Direct BREAKING DAWN?

It looks like Summit isn't messing around when it comes to finding someone to direct the final installment to The Twilight Saga, titled Breaking Dawn. Entertainment Weekly is reporting that three directors have already been approached for the gig: Sofia Coppola(Lost in Translation, The Virgin Suicides), Bill Condon(Dreamgirls), and Gus Van Sant(Good Will Hunting, Milk).

The hope is to deliver a final script, penned by Melissa Rosenberg, to the directors by next week to help gauge their interest. Breaking Dawn is expected to be broken up into two films, so it would be in Summit's best interest to lock up the helmer as early as possible.

Obviously, since Lost in Translation is counted among my favorite movies of all time, it's of interest to me to think that she might lend her considerable talents to a franchise that I loathe. She does seem particularly suited to it, though, considering Twilight is full of angst riddled teens and forbidden love. The other two directors don't really strike me as fitting the mold.  I'll be very interested in seeing where this goes.
