No, 'Batman v Superman' won't be Split into Two Movies

Is there such a thing as a "Friday news dump" for movies like there is in politics? If so, then late Friday's rumor that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice would be split into two movies would probably qualify. The story began when this image (via AICN) began making the rounds...

As you can see, it suggests that Batman v Superman would be divided into two parts, with the first titled Enter the Knight opening fairly soon on October 23rd 2015. The second would be Dawn of Justice and open in the original date of March 25th 2016. With the first trailer possibly arriving in front of Jupiter Ascending, this was looking like the time when this news was meant to be revealed to audiences. However, there was a decided lack of proof that this image was legit (the URL below it isn't official), and now Superman himself, Henry Cavill, has told Variety's Ramin Setoodeh there's no truth to any of this.

So there you have it, straight from the Kryptonian's mouth...sorta.

Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer have Style in First Look at 'The Man from UNCLE'

There have been so many troubled blockbusters over the last couple of years that it's easy to overlook The Man from UNCLE, Warner Bros.' adaptation of the cult spy TV series from the 1960s.  Let's not forget that George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh were once attached to the project before dropping out, leaving the studio in a funk on how to proceed. Tom Cruise was briefly on board to star, also, but he too left. Finally Warner Bros. went the safe route, bringing in Sherlock Holmes director Guy Ritchie and Man of Steel's Henry Cavill to join co-star Armie Hammer. While the film may lack the luster it once did, the first image promises it will be a stylish affair.

Cavill, Hammer, and Alicia Vikander capture the look of the swingin' '60s in these shot, relaxing with a drink after what must have been a tough mission. They play American spy Napoleon Solo (Cavill) and the KGB's Illya Kuryakin (Hammer) who are part of a joint effort to stop a global terrorist organization during the height of the Cold War.

Hopefully this means a trailer is on the way. The Man from UNCLE opens August 14th 2015.

Superman may have a New Attitude in 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice'

The audience for just about any superhero movie is split between the purists; those who want their characters depicted as they originally were; and those who recognize changes are to be expected, even encouraged. The biggest example of this fan split was in the reaction to Man of Steel with some not liking the actions he took in that final fight with General Zod. Whether you liked it or not, it does appear that Zack Snyder and Co. will be addressing those complaints in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Here come the spoilers...

Badass Digest continues their slow drip of trivial information on BvS, but there are a few interesting pieces this time. First of all, the film will take place a few years after Man of Steel with Clark Kent and Lois Lane living together and working at the Daily Planet.  The opening flashes back to Bruce Wayne's arrival in Metropolis during the fight with Zod, and he's not too much a fan of the Kryptonian hero. The international community isn't too keen on him, either.

But what's really interesting is that the screenplay by Chris Terrio addresses some of the criticisms about the first film, which mainly were about Superman snapping Zod's neck and the destruction their fight caused to the city.

"When Superman confronts a big bad guy and unravels his plot, he tells the villain, “I won’t snap your neck, I’m going to take you to prison,” an on-the-nose response to criticisms of the first movie"

There's also a fight scene that has Superman drawing the battle away from the city so not innocents get harmed, an action which seems to draw the respect of General Swanwick. So it seems as if Superman has begun to grow into the role of hero in the time between movies. What people forget is that Superman isn't a hero in the first film; he hasn't begun to figure all of this stuff out. That he's evolving into the character we are all familiar with should make the purists happy while leaving enough fresh material for those who like their Superman a bit edgier.

That depends on if this turns out to be accurate, of course. This is based on Terrio's screenplay from a month before production began and some things may have been cut out. I'd be willing to be that "I won't snap your neck" line has been changed a couple of times over by now.  Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens March 25th 2016.

Barry Pepper Joins 'Scorch Trials'; Henry Cavill is 'Stratton'; Jay Chou Boards 'Now You See Me 2'

Having recently crossed the $300M mark and surpassing Divergent as the most lucrative YA film of the year (until Mockingjay later this month), The Maze Runner is gearing up for the sequel, Scorch Trials. Joining the cast now are Barry Pepper and Lili Taylor, respectively playing "Vince, a survivalist who is one of the last remaining soldiers of a legendary unit called the Right Arm, and "Mary Cooper, a doctor helping Thomas and his fellow Gladers." Wes Ball returns to direct for release on September 18th 2015. Sheesh, they aren't wasting any time, are they?

Henry Cavill apparently can't live on playing Superman alone, and he's set up his own production shingle to take on more interesting projects. He's set to star in Stratton, based on the action novel series by author Duncan Falconer that follows John Stratton, "an operative of the SBS who works with the Intelligence Detachment in Northern Ireland." [Deadline]

Jay Chou will make his return to Hollywood for the first time since The Green Hornet, joining the growing cast of Now You See Me 2. Daniel Radcliffe and Lizzy Caplan are also part of the returning ensemble that includes Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Isla Fisher, Michael Caine, Mark Ruffalo, and Michael Caine. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the story takes place one year after the first film as the Four Horsemen contend with a new foe who wants them to pull off their most dangerous heist yet. [Deadline]

*UPDATE* Comic-Con: First Look at Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman; 'Batman v Superman' Teaser Description

*UPDATE* And here's the updated, higher res version.

Warner Bros. has kicked off Saturday by basically throwing down the Comic-Con gauntlet right at Marvel's feet. After opening up all the screens to give the Hall H crowd a widescreen presentation, the panel kicked off with concept art from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. That was followed by Zack Snyder coming on stage, feigning to not have any footage (they all say that), only to reveal the first teaser and understandably the crowd went ape-dump.

In short, the footage shows a rain-soaked Gotham, where a Batman with glowing eyes and donning the Bat-Armor seen in The Dark Knight Returns, shines the Bat-Signal into the sky. But rather than seeing his insignia, it's instead a very pissed off Superman hovering in the air staring down at him, eyes blazing red. It was awesome and the crowd was as electric as I've ever heard them. Again, Marvel has a very tough act to follow.

The panel basically ended with Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, and Gal Gadot coming up on stage for a brief moment, allowing the crowd to take photos. On the screens were splashed posters for the film, giving us our first look at Gadot as Wonder Woman. It's not the clearest image in the world but we will update it when possible.

First Official Look at Henry Cavill in 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice'

With Comic-Con only weeks away the expectation was that Warner Bros. (and likely Marvel) would on to their major reveals until they were in front of the rabid Hall H masses. That has turned out not to be the case, however, and Zack Snyder has decided to get a jump a on the competition by releasing the first official image of Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

The image comes courtesy of USA Today, and it's appropriately dark and gloomy image of Superman, fitting the harsher world out there that he's facing. In fact it very much resembles the brooding atmosphere of Frank Miller's seminal Batman story, The Dark Knight Returns, from which elements of the film have been based. Snyder spoke a little bit about the decision to bring in Batman so early, saying...

Snyder: "I was in no rush to put Batman in the movie, but on the other hand it seemed organic the way our story was unfolding to start to feather him in."

He adds that  "it's cooler to see a crusty old Batman beating the snot out of guys." rather than depicting a more youthful Bruce Wayne, and suggests the "V" rather than "Vs" in the film's title is a way to keep it from being a straight showdown between the two heroes. It's a questionable theory since everyone reads it as "versus", but that was Snyder's thinking behind the decision.

While there's been a great deal of consternation about his recurring involvement in the DC Universe movies, he's also set to direct Justice League in the future, there's no denying that Snyder is an avid comic book fan with a genuine enthusiasm....

Snyder: "You can talk all you want about other superhero movies, but it's Batman and Superman, let's just be honest. I don't know how you get bigger than that."

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will have to be pretty big as it's currently slated to go up against Captain America 3 on May 6th 2016.

Has Zack Snyder found his Nightwing for 'Superman vs. Batman?

Warner Bros has no comment at the moment but TheWrap is reporting that several sources have told them Adam Driver, from the HBO series Girls, is the front runner to play the grown up Dick Grayson aka Nightwing in the Man of Steel sequel. The casting sheet apparently called for a a young John Hawkes...not where I would go for Nightwing but I'm sure they know a bit more than I. Adam Driver, who apparently is pretty popular, had tons of pictures out there but I went ahead and picked the buffest to kind of give us an idea. Physically, it seems, he'll be able to stand next to Affleck and Cavill on screen and while his look isn't right from central casting I think he could bring the dark side that Nightwing is supposed to have. Honestly I'm just stoked they're including the adult Robin, Nightwing's always been cool but lately...especially after Injustice his stock has greatly grown in my eyes. I do have one concern with this, it's not the casting really but more the inclusion of Nightwing. This coming on the heels of the casting for Batman's love interest really makes you wonder how much this is Man of Steel 2, I know Batman's a fan favorite but don't sell Snyder and Cavill's Kal-El short, Man of Steel was the start of a truly great Superman so give him his due, don't make him stand in the shadow of the Caped Crusader, he's had his time.

Fan Made 'Superman vs. Batman' Trailer with Ben Affleck and Bryan Cranston

Let the fan made madness again! We've got Ben Affleck all suited up as Batman for the Man of Steel sequel, and Bryan Cranston rumored (he's still not confirmed, people!) for Lex Luthor, and the comic book geeks are already dreaming up how the film will look with them on board. We're huge lovers of fan made posters and trailers around here, and this one by Youtube user solyentbrak1 is pretty cool. It's a trailer for Man of Steel 2 using old Ben Affleck footage to present a decent picture of how he could be as Batman. But what's even better is the use of Breaking Bad (as well as some others) to depict Cranston as an especially menacing Luthor.

The actual Man of Steel 2 hits theaters on July 17th 2015.

Clues to 'Man of Steel 2' Plot--My Prediction

I can't believe I"m doing this....I truly hate talking about a sequel before the original has even officially hit theaters. That being said this is an itch I had to scratch...if for no other reason than for everyone out there to tell me what an idiot I am. My theory is after the break and is supported by, what I believe to be, more than coincidental evidence. Not to worry though, no spoilers for Man of Steel...everything I'll mention is stuff you've seen in the trailers.

As we know from what Zack Snyder's been saying over the past week Lex Luthor does factor into this version of the Superman legend, so we know he's going to pop up sometime in some manner. I kind of assumed he'd be more of a background menace in future films since, let's be honest, baldy is kind of played out at this point. He's really not though, the Lex that we've gotten on the big screen has always been the rich, opportunistic, megalomaniac who's sole threat to Superman has been his ability to get his hands on Kryptonite. He's never been a real physical threat...it's easy to see why using this angle again in Superman Returns failed in the heights of summer blockbuster season...there's no fist fight, we need that. We yearn to see the bad guy put down with a well placed right hook. Here's the thing those not familiar with the comics may not know...Lex is very similar to Tony Stark, LuthorCorp doesn't just manage real estate deals, they make more than a few dollars from military contracts. Also like Tony Stark, Lex developed a battle suit. Here's where the two differ, Lex was not out to save the world, he was out to put himself on a even playing field with the last son of Krypton when it came to fisticuffs. This Lex Luthor, the one that could out smart Superman AND give the audience a show, is the version I'm predicting to be the villain when Man of Steel 2 comes out. Here's why.

Watching the trailers there was something very familiar about the armor worn by Zod and his cronies, getting a better look while watching the film it dawned on me....they're wearing a Beta version Luthor battle suit. Here's a side by side comparison of the two:

The look is WAY to similar to be coincidence. Now, the suits didn't appear to give the Kryptonian's power but I'm willing to bet there will be something about the suits that Luthor can re-purpose to give himself superpower. Hell, maybe he just steals the design to piss Superman off, either way I'll bet you a  Kryptonian nickle that we finally get a Luthor worth seeing on screen in the next installment.

'Man of Steel' Sequel Fast Tracked with Zack Snyder and David Goyer Returning

It's the sign of ultimate confidence when a studio begins prepping a sequel before the first film even opens. With Man of Steel days away from what's expected to be a monster debut, Warner Bros. hasn't just green lit a sequel, they've gone ahead and made sure it arrives faster than a speeding bullet.

The report out of Deadline says that Zack Snyder will be brought back to direct the follow-up, which is being fast-tracked with David Goyer returning to pen the script. Christopher Nolan will still be involved as a producer, although he's expected to take a step back and not be quite as involved the next time around.  Henry Cavill will be back, as well, and we knew the studio was fully backing the new star, as they were confident enough to have him replace Tom Cruise in The Man from UNCLE.

So where does this put a Justice League movie? Snyder has been rumored to be handling that as well, but this news will likely push it back a few more years. It had been Snyder's wish to move Superman further along before bringing in other heroes, recently saying "I feel like you need to get Superman a little further down the road before you can do a Justice League movie.... All I’m saying is that you’ve got to get Superman further down the road." A sequel will obviously accomplish that task, and perhaps open the door for other heroes to be introduced before Justice League can become a reality.

Is it too early to start talking villain? Darkseid was the rumor baddie for Justice League back when it was assumed to be next in line, but could the plan be moved up now that Man of Steel 2 is confirmed? On a personal note, I literally just walked out of seeing Man of Steel an hour ago, and I want this sequel to happen like yesterday.

The 'Man of Steel' Beats Down Zod In the Latest Clip

With Man of Steel only a week away from storming mulitplexes and art house theaters looking to make a quick buck, Warner Bros. is dead set on proving once and for all that their film isn't just going to be a Kal-El character study. A good deal of the footage we've seen has looked like an expanded episode of Smallville, with the focus on the hero's upbringing, parentage, and search to find his way in the world. But there's clearly going to be a ton of Zack Snyder-directed action, and judging by the clips we've seen it's going to be pretty incredible.

Following up on last night's clip of Faora (Antje Traue) taking on the U.S. military, the latest scene involves Superman (Henry Cavill) in an intense, lengthy battle against General Zod (Michael Shannon) on the city streets. While the brawl itself is thrilling and literally explosive, we also learn that Zod may have harmed or possibly even killed Superman's adoptive mother (Diane Lane). At the same time we see that the lessons she and Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner) taught are paying dividends.

Man of Steel opens on June 14th. How excited are you to see it? [CBM]

Nokia dials up the final 'Man of Steel' trailer

Warner Bros. puts all of their hopes on a long-running superhero franchise on the line when Man of Steel hits theaters in a week. They've released more than their share of trailers, clips, and posters to amp up anticipation for what Zack Snyder and Christopher Nolan have put together, but there's still room for more.

Nokia partnered up with the studio last year for The Dark Knight Rises, and now they're back again with what should be the final Man of Steel trailer. It features very brief glimpses of new footage, but most of it consists of tweaked scenes we've already seen, and includes Russell Crowe's powerful narration.

Starring Henry Cavill, Russell Crowe, Diane Lane, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, and Antje Traue, Man of Steel opens on June 14th.

Lois Lane Takes Center Stage In the First 'Man of Steel' Clips

With all of the excitement surrounding Zack Snyder's Man of Steel and the incredible action it promises, it's been easy to forget that star Henry Cavill has been surrounded by some incredible character actors. Michael Shannon has received the bulk of the attention for playing villain General Zod, but you've also got Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, and Russell Crowe lending their considerable talents, proving that Warner Bros. was willing to go all out to make sure this film is a hit. With the release of the first two clips, it's not Cavill who takes center stage, but co-stars Amy Adams and Laurence Fishburne.

In the first clip we see Adams as intrepid reporter Lois Lane, and Fishburne as her boss at the Daily Planet, Perry White. She's in the midst of taking an earful of harsh criticism for what appears to be a botched story involving Superman. The second clip is a scene that has been glimpsed in earlier trailers, featuring Superman and Lane in an interrogation room, where she questions him on the meaning of his 'S' symbol.

Man of Steel flies into theaters on June 14th.

New Images and a Major 'Man of Steel' Easter Egg Revealed; Zack Snyder Talks Sequels and 'Justice League'

The Man of Steel press junkets have been happening over the weekend, which means that the curtain has been completely lifted on Zack Snyder and Christopher Nolan's Superman film. While it's still a couple of weeks away from release, the buzz for months hasn't been so much about the movie itself, but what Warner Bros. do after it? Will they go directly into a sequel, assuming this one is as big a hit as many expect? Or do they finally move forward in bringing all of the DC Comics heroes together for Justice League?

Rumors have suggested that Snyder will be asked to direct Justice League if everything falls into line as the studio hopes, but in a conversation with Collider he says that a Man of Steel sequel would probably need to happen first....

Snyder: "I feel like you need to get Superman a little further down the road before you can do a Justice League movie.... All I’m saying is that you’ve got to get Superman further down the road."

That certainly sounds like a sequel, and perhaps hints that all of Superman's internal struggles may not be resolved by Man of Steel's conclusion. As for the guy wearing the red & blue costume, Henry Cavill? While he may have been a virtual unknown to many people a year ago, that's definitely not the case anymore, and Warner Bros. has enough confidence in him to hand him the lead in their reboot of The Man from UNCLE. Cavill sounds more than game for jumping ahead into a Justice League film, although he doesn't have any inside information on it....

Cavill:   "Of course I’m open to it, very much open to it, but I have no idea what plans are for that. I’m not privy to that kind of information. I think it would be a lot of fun to explore the character further and a continuing journey, but I know nothing about those plans so far."

If Justice League is going to happen, chances are it won't hit the 2015 target date that has been out there for awhile now. A director has yet to be signed for what will be a massive undertaking, and Will Beal's script was thrown out with David Goyer stepping in to draft a new one. Chances are we're looking at a delay that could stretch into 2016 and beyond, which would leave the door open for Man of Steel 2 arriving first.

Speaking of sequels, there is a major Easter Egg in Man of Steel that could be a sign of things to come. It could be considered a spoiler, so feast on a handful of new images first to decide if it's something you want to know...

Ok? So, Snyder revealed that one of the satellites destroyed by General Zod has the Wayne Enterprises logo on it. Is this as hint of things to come, or just something cool for the eagle-eyed fans out there? Probably more of the latter, but when asked about Superman and Batman being on screen together, Snyder played coy...

Snyder: “I don’t know. Everything is interesting at this point. And don’t forget that Lex is out there, doing who knows what…”

It should be noted that a rumor hinting at Superman and Batman teaming up for a World's Finest movie sprang up back in March. If Justice League does end up getting pushed back significantly, this could be a way of moving Superman "a little further down the road".

Henry Cavill replaces Tom Cruise in 'The Man from UNCLE'

How much confidence does Warner Bros. have not only in Man of Steel, but in its star, Henry Cavill? With Tom Cruise suddenly dropping out of Guy Ritchie's The Man from UNCLE in order to invest his energies in Mission: Impossible 5, the studio was suddenly without an A-lister to front the film, which has had more than its share of casting trouble already. So it's a sign of their utter faith in Cavill that he's the guy they want to step in and fill Cruise's shoes.

Cavill has entered talks to take the lead role of American spy Napoleon Solo in the big screen take on the 1960s TV series. He'll join fellow fast-rising stars Armie Hammer and Alicia Vikander as agents from the titular espionage agency battling the threat of THRUSH, a global terrorist outfit. The studio must love Cavill at this point, as they had been looking at him to co-star in Ron Howard's In the Heart of the Sea opposite Chris Hemsworth.

This marks a drastic tone shift for the film, though, as Cruise could have been seen as the veteran spy with Hammer as his younger protege. Now this is definitely skewing for the youth demographic, which should make Warner Bros. happy as they have clear franchise hopes for it. Cavill has come a long way for an actor most are still unfamiliar with, and is basically unproven as a box office star. His two biggest films so far were Tarsem Singh's Immortals, and the largely-unseen action film The Cold Light of Day opposite Bruce Willis. [Variety]

Two new 'Man of Steel' posters featuring Kal-El and General Zod

As predicted, yesterday's Jor-El poster for Zack Snyder's Man of Steel was just the first in a series of character posters, and today sees the release of two more. The images feature Michael Shannon in cuffs as the evil General Zod, and Henry Cavill as Superman himself. The Zod image calls back to some of the earlier photos we've seen of Supes in military custody, suggesting that neither Kryptonian is going to get the nicest treatment here on Earth.

Hopefully there will be more posters to come, preferably one of Antje Traue as Faora.  Man of Steel opens on June 14th, but if you absolutely need to see more, Warner Bros. has released a new behind-the-scenes featurette. Check it out below.

PLOT: In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Cavill) is a young twentysomething journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond anyone’s imagination. Transported to Earth years ago from Krypton, an advanced alien planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question – Why am I here? Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Costner), Clark soon discovers that having super abilities means making very difficult decisions. But when the world needs stability the most, it comes under attack. Will his abilities be used to maintain peace or ultimately used to divide and conquer? Clark must become the hero known as “Superman,” not only to shine as the world’s last beacon of hope but to protect the ones he loves.

*UPDATE* New 'Man of Steel' posters and action-packed TV spot

*Warner Brothers has just added yet another soaring poster. At this rate don't be surprised if they drop another in a few hours!*

Just because Iron Man 3 looks to have already locked up the title as this summer's box office champion doesn't mean that Warner Bros. is throwing in the towel. On the contrary, they're pulling out all of the big guns for Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, dropping two new posters and an action-intensive TV spot.

The two one-sheets deliver iconic imagery of the red & blue boy scout, played by Henry Cavill, rocketing into space trailed by a massive sonic boom. The TV spot is a pretty slick combination of the first two trailers, delivering a touch of the film's somber mood while also showing off some of the bigger action spots. It also gives us a better look at Michael Shannon as the fearsome Kryptonian, General Zod.

So what do you think? Is June 14th when Man of Steel begins to soar past Iron Man 3's incredible run?

Soaring new poster and TV spot for 'Man of Steel'

As rumors continue to swirl about Warner Bros.' plans for Justice League, it's important to remember that none of it will matter if Man of Steel turns out to be another Superman Returns. So far, indications are that it will live up to all of the lofty expectations, but the studio isn't taking any chances. With about a month and a half before the film flies into theaters, they've released a great new TV spot that maintains the epic feel of the trailers, followed by a poster featuring star Henry Cavill.

Other than Zack Snyder behind the camera, Cavill is perhaps the biggest question mark the film faces. One has to think that Christopher Nolan, on board here as a producer, wouldn't back him if he weren't capable. He'll get plenty of support from a cast that includes Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Laurence Fisbhurne, and Antje Traue. Man of Steel opens in 3D on June 14th.
