Barry Pepper Joins 'Scorch Trials'; Henry Cavill is 'Stratton'; Jay Chou Boards 'Now You See Me 2'

Having recently crossed the $300M mark and surpassing Divergent as the most lucrative YA film of the year (until Mockingjay later this month), The Maze Runner is gearing up for the sequel, Scorch Trials. Joining the cast now are Barry Pepper and Lili Taylor, respectively playing "Vince, a survivalist who is one of the last remaining soldiers of a legendary unit called the Right Arm, and "Mary Cooper, a doctor helping Thomas and his fellow Gladers." Wes Ball returns to direct for release on September 18th 2015. Sheesh, they aren't wasting any time, are they?

Henry Cavill apparently can't live on playing Superman alone, and he's set up his own production shingle to take on more interesting projects. He's set to star in Stratton, based on the action novel series by author Duncan Falconer that follows John Stratton, "an operative of the SBS who works with the Intelligence Detachment in Northern Ireland." [Deadline]

Jay Chou will make his return to Hollywood for the first time since The Green Hornet, joining the growing cast of Now You See Me 2. Daniel Radcliffe and Lizzy Caplan are also part of the returning ensemble that includes Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Isla Fisher, Michael Caine, Mark Ruffalo, and Michael Caine. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the story takes place one year after the first film as the Four Horsemen contend with a new foe who wants them to pull off their most dangerous heist yet. [Deadline]

Learn the True Story Behind 'The Conjuring' In the Latest Trailer

Horror movies have worn out the "based on a true story" label to the point that the bounds of credibility no longer exists. The presumption is that by suggesting these events really happened, they somehow make a film scarier in the moment, although there's no real evidence that's the case. James Wan is probably the last director who needs to rely on gimmicks, his latest film The Conjuring looks creepy enough, but he's going the extra mile to let us know the events we're about to witness did actually occur.

The latest trailer highlights real life Perron family, who for years experienced supernatural events in their Rhode Island home. As they share their terrifying story, we see the parallels in the film and it makes for a pretty impressive package and a brilliant marketing strategy. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, best known for taking on the Amityville case, but find that the Perrons are dealing with an even darker presence.

The Conjuring possesses theaters on July 19th.

New trailer for James Wan's 'The Conjuring' with Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson

James Wan made his name as the torture porn maestro behind the Saw movies, but I think he proved to be even more adept at psychological horror with Insidious. The film was one of 2011's biggest hits, banking nearly $100M on a paltry budget below $2M. His latest thriller, The Conjuring, sticks to the genre but with the added twist of being based on a supposedly true story.

A new teaser has been released, and it's a tense, slow burn unusual for trailers nowadays. Wan seems anxious to find a way to scare us long before we ever experience the full deal, and he's done a superb job of it with this excellently cut clip. Insidious star Patrick Wilson joins Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren, a pair of paranormal investigators called in to help the Perron family who claim to be living among the dead. They encounter and confront a dark entity in what is the most horrifying case of their careers. The Perrons wrote a book about the experience, House of Darkness, House of Light: The True Story. Lily Taylor, Ron Livingston, Joey King, and Mackenzie Foy play the Perrons in the film, an

After some incredibly well-received test screenings, the The Conjuring was moved to July 19th where it will open against Dreamworks' animated Turbo, and the comic book adaptation R.I.P.D. Check out the trailer below...
