'The Conjuring' Spinoff 'Annabelle' Scares up a First Trailer

These days your movie is nothing if it doesn't spawn a franchise. Look at what Universal is doing with their library of classic movie monsters, attempting to create an Avengers-esque universe to build from. But horror movies have always had a long history of piling on sequels and spinoffs, often way beyond reason. One of last year's genre champs was James Wan's The Conjuring, the small-budget horror banking more than $300M and earning a sequel due out next year. But with that kind of success Warner Bros. has figured now is a good time to jump in with both feet on a spinoff, Annabelle, based on the killer doll from the first film.

Starring Annabelle Wallis, Ward Horton, and Alfred Woodard, Annabelle is a prequel to The Conjuring that explains how the creepy doll became possessed by a demonic force. When we last saw her she was locked up in a special room by the Warrens (Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, not appearing in this film), and we got a glimpse at the case which led to her capture. This film goes even further back and follows a whole new set of terrorized characters. Wan steps into a producer role as his longtime cinematographer John R. Leonetti takes over as director. He's previously been at the helm for Mortal Kombat: Annihilation and The Butterfly Effect 2 but seems to have learned a lot from Wan about establishing an ominous tone.

Annabelle arrives in time for Halloween on October 3rd.

'The Conjuring' Spinoff 'Annabelle' Gets October Release

Killer dolls are back in style! Early in James Wan's spooky The Conjuring we meet Annabelle, a possessed doll the Warrens (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) were keeping safe in their basement. That room held a number of objects that have been touched by evil supernatural forces, and we're about to learn of Annabelle's origins in a new spinoff film, and it's headed to theaters just in time for Halloween.

Warner Bros. and New Line have set an October 3rd release date for Annabelle, which puts it up against another thriller in David Fincher's Gone Girl.  Wan will produce with The Conjuring cinematographer John Leonetti taking over as director. Annabelle Wallis (W.E.), Ward Horton and Alfre Woodard will star in the film which will probably tell the "true" story of the real Annabelle doll Ed & Lorraine Warren discovered.  You can take a look at how the actual doll looked below, and it's quite a departure from what we saw on the screen...

A sequel to The Conjuring is also in the works which will have Wilson and Farmiga reprising their roles.

'The Conjuring' Sequel In the Works

Give James Wan (Saw, Insidious) a couple of million dollars, sometimes not even that much, and he's proven capable of churning out a horror film that earns 100 times its budget. Obviously, studios love numbers like those, and New Line is probably expecting his latest spookfest The Conjuring to do big business when it opens this weekend. In fact, they're counting on it, and are already preparing to turn it into a franchise.

New Line has announced that a sequel to The Conjuring is in the works, basing it on the strong wave of positive buzz from audiences and critics alike. Writers Chad and Carey Hayes are returning to pen the script, and it's expected that the sequels will be based on the many case files of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, who are portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. Their past cases have already served as the basis for The Amityville Horror, The Haunting in Connecticut and others. It's unclear whether Wilson and Farmiga will return, but the studio will almost certainly pull out all of the stops to make it happen.

The real question is whether Wan will direct, as he's moving on to helm Fast & Furious 7 this summer. If that takes off and he decides to hang out with Vin Diesel and Paul Walker for awhile, he may not be able to fit The Conjuring 2 in his schedule. [Variety]

Learn the True Story Behind 'The Conjuring' In the Latest Trailer

Horror movies have worn out the "based on a true story" label to the point that the bounds of credibility no longer exists. The presumption is that by suggesting these events really happened, they somehow make a film scarier in the moment, although there's no real evidence that's the case. James Wan is probably the last director who needs to rely on gimmicks, his latest film The Conjuring looks creepy enough, but he's going the extra mile to let us know the events we're about to witness did actually occur.

The latest trailer highlights real life Perron family, who for years experienced supernatural events in their Rhode Island home. As they share their terrifying story, we see the parallels in the film and it makes for a pretty impressive package and a brilliant marketing strategy. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, best known for taking on the Amityville case, but find that the Perrons are dealing with an even darker presence.

The Conjuring possesses theaters on July 19th.

New trailer for 'The Conjuring' is still moody, but less scary

James Wan and the marketing folks behind The Conjuring did a masterful job with the first trailer, an intense, slow-burning clip that relied heavily on mood and atmosphere. Since most horror trailers tend to rope in audiences by showing off the biggest jump scares, it was a refreshing a change-of-pace and a truly imaginative piece of work. The latest trailer is a bit more conventional, but the creepy 1970s motif is still highly effective.

Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson star as Lorraine and Ed Warren, husband and wife paranormal investigators who find their greatest challenge when working the case of the Perron family. The Perron's Rhode Island home has been invaded by a supernatural force more deadly than anything the Warrens have ever encountered.

The MPAA has hit the film with an 'R' rating simply for being too intense and scary, which is a pretty rare feat. Also starring Lily Taylor, Ron Livingston, Mackenzie Foy, and Joey King, The Conjuring will haunt your nightmares on July 19th.

New trailer for James Wan's 'The Conjuring' with Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson

James Wan made his name as the torture porn maestro behind the Saw movies, but I think he proved to be even more adept at psychological horror with Insidious. The film was one of 2011's biggest hits, banking nearly $100M on a paltry budget below $2M. His latest thriller, The Conjuring, sticks to the genre but with the added twist of being based on a supposedly true story.

A new teaser has been released, and it's a tense, slow burn unusual for trailers nowadays. Wan seems anxious to find a way to scare us long before we ever experience the full deal, and he's done a superb job of it with this excellently cut clip. Insidious star Patrick Wilson joins Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren, a pair of paranormal investigators called in to help the Perron family who claim to be living among the dead. They encounter and confront a dark entity in what is the most horrifying case of their careers. The Perrons wrote a book about the experience, House of Darkness, House of Light: The True Story. Lily Taylor, Ron Livingston, Joey King, and Mackenzie Foy play the Perrons in the film, an

After some incredibly well-received test screenings, the The Conjuring was moved to July 19th where it will open against Dreamworks' animated Turbo, and the comic book adaptation R.I.P.D. Check out the trailer below...
