Catherine Zeta-Jones and Bill Nighy Join 'Dad's Army'; Bryan Cranston is 'The Infiltrator', and More

British sitcom Dad's Army is headed to the big screen, and it will star Catherine Zeta-Jones, Bill Nighy, Toby Jones, Daniel Mays, Michael Gambon, Bill Paterson and Tom Courtenay. Directed by Oliver Parker (Johnny English Reborn), the film is set in 1944 at the climax of WWII.  "The Allies are poised to invade France and finally defeat the German army. But in Walmington-on-Sea morale amongst the Home Guard is low. Their new mission then – to patrol the Dover army base – is a great chance to revive spirits and reputation, that is until glamorous journalist Rose Winters arrives to write about their exploits, setting the pulses racing and putting the local women on red alert. MI5 then discover a radio signal sent direct to Berlin from Walmington-on-Sea. There’s a spy on the loose! The outcome of the war is suddenly at stake, and it falls to our unlikely heroes to stand up and be counted." Filming begins later this month. [THR]

Bryan Cranston will reteam with The Lincoln Lawyer director Brad Furman for the spy flick, The Infiltrator. Based on the autobiography by Robert Mazur and the first of seven planned feature films (franchise!!!!), the story adapted by Ellen Brown Furman centers on Customs and Excise Agent Mazur and his undercover alias, Bob Musella. [THR]

Paco Cabezas and Max Landis' action-romance Mr. Right is putting together a very impressive cast. Already set to star Sam Rockwell, Anna Kendrick, and RZA, Tim Roth is the latest to come aboard. Kendrick plays a woman who meets the perfect guy in Mr. Right (Rockwell), only he turns out to be a hitman. Roth will play Hopper, Mr. Right's former mentor, now his nemesis. [Deadline]

Kerry Washington will take a break from Scandal to star in something lighter but probably just as ridiculous. She'll star in rom-com Is He the One, directed by Malcolm D. Lee (The Best Man Holiday) and penned by the DJ Richardson and Michelle Morgan (Girl Most Likely). The story takes a How I Met Your Mother approach, following a bride's three major relationships with the audience unaware of which guy she will ultimately marry. Blergh. Washington deserves better than this stuff like this.

Bryan Cranston Eyes 'The Great Wall'; Anthony Hopkins will 'Go with Me'; John Travolta Puts 'Life on the Line'

Now that Matt Damon is said to be considering a role in Zhang Yimou's Chinese epic, The Great Wall, the latest to give it a look is Bryan Cranston. The Breaking Bad star and multiple Emmy-winner may join the film which examines the mysterious origins of China's wondrous landmark. Cranson was last seen (for a few minutes, anyway) in Godzilla, and will soon star in a Dalton Trumbo biopic opposite Helen Mirren. [Deadline]

Anthony Hopkins is reteaming with his Kidnapping Freddy Heineken director Daniel Alfredson for another thriller, Go with Me. Greg Jacobs (Magic Mike XXL director) and Joe Gangemi adapted the script from Castle Freeman Jr.'s book about "a young woman who returns to her hometown in the Pacific Northwest only to be harassed by an ex-cop turned crimelord named Blackway. Forsaken by the locals and advised to leave town by the local sheriff, she instead turns to an ex-logger (Hopkins) and his sidekick to help her fight back against her sociopathic stalker."

John Travolta, Kate Bosworth, and Devon Sawa (where's he been?) will star in Life on the Line, an action thriller directed by Saw V's David Hackl.  The disaster drama follows a crew of eccentric electrical grid linemen who do the dangerous high-wire job while trying to hold on to the women they love and survive a massive storm that threatens to rip their lives apart.

Review: 'Godzilla' Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, and Elizabeth Olsen

There's a reason Godzilla is known as the King of All Monsters, and it only has a little bit to do with his massive size. The creature has been around for six decades and starred in more than 28 movies, begun as a metaphor for the devastating effects of nuclear weaponry on Japan and the world. A movie like Pacific Rim doesn't exist without Godzilla inspiring the entire kaiju genre, but at its heart the early films were designed as cautionary horror tales. Gareth Edwards' modern update, because frankly nobody wants to remember the 1998 film, is also steeped in heavy warnings about nature's devastating power and the dire consequences if humans choose to ignore it. But it's also those humans and their actions that are left forgotten in the need to generate just another soulless blockbuster spectacle.

Sadly, the most colossal thing about Godzilla is how underwhelming it is, and perhaps my own expectations were inflated because of all the hype. I was there on the floor of Hall H when Edwards made the big Godzilla announcement and showed his early vision for the reboot, and the room was thick with the energy of anticipation. That excitement really never subsided thanks to a smart marketing strategy that kept the monster largely out of promos and trailers. The mystery is what mattered, and that tension over Godzilla's arrival is a large reason why the film works so well initially, yet is so disappointing once he appears.

The atomic era serves as sturdy ground for the story, penned by relative newcomer Max Borenstein (with a Frank Darabont assist), building on old fears of planet-killing nuclear destruction. Edwards uses stock footage from Hiroshima and other nuclear events, and later on uses many of these tragedies as a visual road map to the epic disasters he's capturing on screen. The film is at its best long before Godzilla ever enters the frame thanks to a superb cast adding such rich, emotional stakes one forgets this is supposed to be just another summer popcorn flick. Bryan Cranston is Joe Brody, a physicist struggling to get past the death of his wife fifteen years earlier when she was killed by an accident at a Japanese nuclear plant. Having lost his job, Joe has also lost the respect of his son, Ford (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), who believes his father to be a total whack job obsessed with conspiracy theories that the Japanese government is hiding something big. The father/son dynamic is easily the best aspect of the story early on, with Cranston and Johnson playing off one another beautifully. Joe's haunted quest for the truth lends dramatic thrust to what is essentially a slow burn mystery. Ford, who now a husband, father, and soldier in the Ordinance Disposal unit (that'll come in handy later), is reluctantly dragged into exploring the quarantined zone where the original disaster occurred. There they discover a secret that threatens the world, and Ford learns that his dad wasn't a total nut job all these years.

From there all of the compelling emotional stakes and familial dynamics get roasted like they were caught in Godzilla's atomic fire. The typically-awesome Ken Watanabe doesn't do much but look bewildered as Dr. Ichiro Serizawa, a scientist who has been studying these disasters for decades and knows the truth about them. Now he's working at a secret facility where cocooned radioactive energy-sapping creatures are being housed in secret, even though their mere presence screws with all electronics and threatens the whole planet. It's also just kind of stupid in general terms. When the creatures inevitably escape and cause all types of havoc, another monster awakens to combat them, with Serizawa hypothesizing it's nature's way of finding balance. Godzilla has often been portrayed as an avatar of Mother Earth, a protector of the planet, and the film works this aspect into the story seamlessly without going too far with it. Nobody wants to see Godzilla turned into Captain Planet or anything like that.

The humans scramble around to make their plans to stop all of the monsters walking (or flying) the earth, and as one might expect it involves nukes and lots of gunfire, things we know are never going to work. Meanwhile, Ford is bouncing from location to location trying to get back home to his family, but he's really sort of adrift without a whole lot to do. There comes a point where human focus leaves Joe and shifts to Ford, and the story never quite recovers from that. We have no emotional investment in ford other than his return home, while the long-held tension he had with Joe provided the greatest heft. Elizabeth Olsen is sorely wasted as Ford's wife, and the same can be said for other bit players Juliette Binoche, Sally Hawkins, and David Strathairn. The amount of talent gone to waste here is phenomenal. As I said before, Godzilla movies all tend to leave their human characters in the background or relegate them to stock roles, and this is no different. Mostly the humans fumble around dumbfounded while the monsters cause wide scale disasters, and the whole thing just comes off as empty and pointless. We know it will be Godzilla who saves the day in the end, so where's the drama in everything that comes before that?

Poorly executed story aside, Godzilla is often the jaw-dropper we were always hoping it would be.  This is the first big movie by Edwards, who floored many with his small-budget creature feature, Monsters. That film was an immigration parable clearly inspired by Godzilla movies, and here he throws in a dose of Spielberg-ian wonder to much of the spectacle. The visuals are impressive and will have you geeking out over the awesome scale of it, especially the design of Godzilla himself. He looks great and there's an incredible level of detail in every movement. Edwards keeps him hidden in a thick haze of smoke, fog, and shadow until the time is just right for maximum impact. The way he builds tension is a thing of pure beauty.  Less impressive are the other monsters, called MUTOs (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Objects) which look hastily thrown together and rather generic. This severely hurts the monster clashes which never quite live up to the exhilarating display they ought to be.

There are good ideas here, and Edwards is a genuine talent and perhaps does the best with a modern Godzilla film than anybody could have hoped for. Godzilla as a character simply doesn't hold a lot of appeal outside of being a force of nature. He's awesome to look at and be in awe of but without human characters audiences can connect with, Godzilla might as well keep that mighty roar to himself.

New Images and Five Clips from 'Godzilla'

By now a handful of top critics have had a chance to experience Gareth Edwards' Godzilla, and while they aren't allowed to reveal their thoughts on it just yet, some early word is beginning to sneak out. For some, the return of the legendary screen monster is one of the most anticipated events of the summer, and apparently even when the film arrives audiences will be waiting awhile for Godzilla to appear on screen. That should have been obvious just based on the marketing campaign that has kept Godzilla largely out of view, but now there's some confirmation of it.

So it seems as if this Godzilla movie will be more of a pot boiler, a tension-filled horror movie rather than just a straight-up disaster film, and we get more of a sense of that in five new clips and some newly released images. The cast is superb with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Ken Watanabe, Bryan Cranson, Sally Hawkins, Juliette Binoche, and David Strathairn all on board to survive the creature's rampage. For me the image of Strathairn and Watanabe together

Godzilla opens on May 16th.

A Force of Nature Awakens in New 'Godzilla' Trailer

The blockbuster season may kick off in a few days with The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but for many (like me) the most anticipated movie of the summer is Godzilla. The king of all monsters has been in desperate need of a comeback for a long time...or at least a competent comeback....and it appears Gareth Edwards has figured out how to make Godzilla awesome again.

A new trailer has been released that takes the creature out of the shadows and reveals his full, terrible power. There's a ton of never-before-seen footage here that shows off the visual effects and the A+ cast led by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe, and Juliette Binoche. Godzilla hits theaters on May 16th.

Helen Mirren Eyes 'Trumbo' Opposite Bryan Cranston

The story of blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo is headed to the silver screen, and it was just a few months ago we learned it would be Bryan Cranston portraying him with Jay Roach (Game Change) directing. Now it looks as if Helen Mirren may be coming aboard to play Trumbo's wife, Cleo.

Variety reports Mirren has entered talks for the role of Cleo, who stood by Dalton's side after he was blacklisted when he refused to testify in front of Senator McCarthy's House Un-American Activities Committee. Trumbo had been considered one of Hollywood's great writers at the time, but continued to work under pseudonyms, winning Oscars for Roman Holiday and The Brave One.

Mirren only recently played Alfred Hitchcok's wife in Hitchcock. No word on when Trumbo will begin filming as it's still looking for a distributor. The combo of Cranston and Mirren should make finding one a lot easier.

Two Chilling New Trailers for 'Godzilla'

As the summer season becomes flooded with blockbusters, it's become more difficult for any of these films to truly separate from the pack. Over the next few months we'll see Transformers: Age of Extinction, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, X-men: Days of Future Past, and while they all look huge, none of them have the level of anticipation Godzilla has earned.

Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. have crafted an ingenious campaign for the movie monster's big screen return, conjuring up the fear usually reserved for horrors while keeping the scale appropriately epic. And now they've done it yet again with two new trailers, one titled 'Courage" that focuses a little more on the humans enduring Godzilla's savage attack. The other is an extended, 2 1/2 minute look with tons of impressive footage.

Directed by Gareth Edwards with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, David Strathairn, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, and Juliette Binoche, Godzilla stomps into theaters May 16th.

International 'Godzilla' Trailer Offers New Footage

Is there a more anticipated film right now than Godzilla? Every trailer, poster, and viral promo has been right on the mark, re-introducing the king of all monsters as the badass he was always meant to be while forging new territory. Throw in an ominous mood and a stellar cast of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, David Strathairn, and Juliette Binoche, and what you have is a summer blockbuster that could best anything Marvel has to offer. And now another look at the film has arrived with a new trailer, offering some never-before-seen footage.

Godzilla stomps into theaters on May 6th.

New Full Trailer for 'Godzilla' Roars to Life

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures knew they had something special with Godzilla right from the very beginning, with the roar of the Comic-Con crowd cheering the very first announcement. And as the film has rounded into shape, adding a talented cast that blockbusters of this size don't usually warrant, the anticipation for the return of the king of all monsters has only grown. The first teaser trailer was impressively moody; the viral campaign has been solid; and now a new full-length trailer has been unleashed.

Directed by visual wiz Gareth Edwards, making his first foray into big-budget filmmaking, he's joined by a stellar cast of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, David Strathairn, and Juliette Binoche. But the real star is obviously Godzilla, and this footage takes us just a little bit deeper into his origin spurred on by man's utter arrogance towards nature. And when Mother Nature gets angry, you get Godzilla stomping through the city causing havoc and bellowing his mighty roar.

Basically this looks like it may be the biggest, baddest action film of the summer, so watch out. Godzilla hits theaters on May 16th.

Bryan Cranston & Edgar Ramirez Head to Errol Morris' 'Holland, Michigan'

Way back in 1991, Errol Morris made his only narrative directorial effort, an adaptation of The Dark Wind. Ever since he's continued to focus on the many investigative documentaries for which he has become synonymous. But a return to narrative films is on the way with Holland, Michigan, and now he's just added two big names to join the already-cast Naomi Watts.

While on Reddit talking about Oscar-nominated documentary The Act of Killing, for which he is a producer, Morris revealed that he's cast Bryan Cranston and Edgar Ramirez in Holland, Michigan. Andrew Sodroski's Black List script has Watts as a woman who begins an affair after suspecting that her husband has been cheating, only to learn that he's actually a serial killer. Oops!

Described as a combination of dark comedy and thriller, this should be right in Morris' wheelhouse, and obviously the cast is superb. Filming on Holland, Michigan begins this April.

Bryan Cranston is Blacklisted Writer Dalton Trumbo In New Biopic

It's not as if Bryan Cranston has been waiting for Breaking Bad to wrap up before lining up his next gigs. He's been arguably the most sought after character actor in Hollywood over the past year, appearing in six films over that time while lining up a prominent role in Godzilla. Now he'll move on from playing one bad guy to one who was banned from Hollywood.

Cranston will play famous screenwriter Dalton Trumbo in Trumbo, a new biopic with Jay Roach (Game Change) at the helm. Trumbo was once the highest paid screenwriter in Hollywood, but it all fell apart in 1950 when he was hauled in front of the infamous House Un-American Activities Committee. Refusing to testify, he was sent to prison for eleven months then blacklisted from Hollywood. He kept on working, though, moving to Mexico City and sending in scripts for Spartacus, Gun Crazy, and the Oscar-winning screenplays for The Brave One and Roman Holiday.

John McNamara will adapt Bruce Cook's book, Dalton Trumbo, and it should offer a chance for some intense personal drama. The Communist witch hunt of the era devastated a lot of friendships and ruined many careers, and Trumbo, who was a member of the Communist Party, was right at the center of it. Filming should begin in 2014.  [Deadline]

Bryan Cranston Denies Lex Luthor Rumors

The Internet echo chamber spread like wildfire an unsourced story about Bryan Cranston being confirmed as Lex Luthor in the Man of Steel sequel. It was one of those stories that I only posted because so many emails had been sent to me asking why we weren't reporting it. So I did, and gave it the amount of snark and skepticism it so richly deserved. Those same sites that ran with the false story have since backtracked, but to throw a little more salt in the wound, Cranston recently spoke to Boston.com and shoots the rumor down once and for all.

For those who don't recall, one of the added details in the piece was that Cranston had signed for a total of six movies, making him an integral part of Warner Bros. superhero plans. Not that Cranston has heard of any of this...

Cranston: “Six? This is all news to me. I think that maybe my name is bandied about because I’m known to be bald. ‘What bald guy can we get?’ The reality is they can take any actor and shave his head or put a bald cap on him.”

Of course, he could be pulling our legs, and technically he doesn't really deny anything but the six-picture deal, but he does seem to be writing himself out of the story. Assuming Cranston is indeed out, the only other option that has been put out there is Mark Strong, who recently hinted he may have an edge on the role.

We'll see what happens. Man of Steel 2, Superman vs. Batman, or whatever it will be titled is expected to open on July 17th 2015.

Fan Made 'Superman vs. Batman' Trailer with Ben Affleck and Bryan Cranston

Let the fan made madness again! We've got Ben Affleck all suited up as Batman for the Man of Steel sequel, and Bryan Cranston rumored (he's still not confirmed, people!) for Lex Luthor, and the comic book geeks are already dreaming up how the film will look with them on board. We're huge lovers of fan made posters and trailers around here, and this one by Youtube user solyentbrak1 is pretty cool. It's a trailer for Man of Steel 2 using old Ben Affleck footage to present a decent picture of how he could be as Batman. But what's even better is the use of Breaking Bad (as well as some others) to depict Cranston as an especially menacing Luthor.

The actual Man of Steel 2 hits theaters on July 17th 2015.

Mark Strong Hints at Lex Luthor Role in 'Superman vs. Batman'; Bryan Cranston Rumored

We never saw the bald head of Lex Luthor in Man of Steel, but there were enough LexCorp sightings to know that Superman's nemesis is in Metropolis somewhere. That's led many to expect that he'll turn up in the sequel, a Superman vs. Batman film announced at Comic-Con and inspired by Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. While most of the attention has been focused on who will play Bruce Wayne, rumors have begun to spring up about Lex Luthor, as well.

One of those rumors has involved Mark Strong, who has some familiarity with DC superhero movies having played Sinestro in Green Lantern. Digital Spy caught up with Strong and asked him about the possibility of playing Luthor, to which he replied...

"All I can say is... watch this space."

It's possible he's having a bit of fun with the interviewer, because it's unlikely he'd risk getting the job by being quite so obvious. But there's no question that Strong, who has made a career of playing strong, commanding bad guys, would be a worthy addition to the cast and a great fit for Luthor. It would also go a long way in getting some distance from the Green Lantern film, confirming once and for all that it's not a part of the universe Zack Snyder is putting together.

Meanwhile, Latino Review's El Mayimbe suggests that Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston is up for the Luthor part. Although anything that site says should be taken with a bucket of salt, it does make some sense considering Cranston's relationship with Warner Bros. on Argo and Godzilla. So it seems like a natural fit, but it's likely that a number of candidates are being considered. Filming is expected to begin early next year for release in the summer of 2015.

Elizabeth Olsen and Bryan Cranston eying 'Godzilla' reboot

Ignoring all of the legal snafus going on in the background, Legendary Pictures is still rolling on with Gareth Edwards' Godzilla reboot. After the phenomenal reaction just the announcement received at last summer's Comic-Con, they aren't going to let a little thing like a couple of upset producers stand in the way. While casting has proven to also be a bit of a hurdle, two more big names have entered the picture.

Variety reports that Bryan Cranton and Elizabeth Olsen are circling roles in the film, which is obviously based on the classic monster known for stomping his way through Tokyo. Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption) is still hammering out a script rewrite, and no deals will be finalized until that part of it is done. When Aaron Johnson was approached for the lead role last month, he stated pretty much the same thing. Caleb Landry Jones, Henry Cavill, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Edwards favorite Scoot McNairy were also in the running, and may still be.

The talents of Cranston and Olsen speak for themselves. Obviously they'd be great additions. He's coming off turns in the Oscar-nominated Argo and the less well-regarded Total Recall. She will be seen next in Spike Lee's Oldboy remake.

Godzilla is slated to open on May 16th 2014.
