Rza's Blacksmith Returns in Trailer for 'The Man with the Iron Fists: Sting of the Scorpion'

There's something Rza and Vince McMahon share a knowledge of, and it's if you need a movie sequel done cheap and quick, Roel Reine is your guy. He's the director behind such WWE gems as The Scorpion King 3, The Marine 2, and 12 Rounds 2: Reloaded, and now he's also the dude responsible for The Man with the Iron Fists 2 which you had no idea was an actual thing.

The Man with the Iron Fists: Sting of the Scorpion has Rza returning as the Blacksmith, with Rick Yune, Andrew Lin, and others reprising their roles, although you won't find Russell Crowe anywhere near this one. So what's the plot? Who knows? Does it matter? The first one was incomprehensible and damned boring, which nobody would have expected from a kung-fu enthusiast like Rza. The trailers were off the chain, though, and this first one for the sequel is good, too. Perhaps the experienced Reine can deliver on the martial arts promise that Rza couldn't?

The Man with the Iron Fists has yet to gain a release date but is expected to go straight-to-DVD.

RZA meets 'Mr. Right'; Aubrey Plaza goes to 'Fresno'; 'Ant-Man' Adds Martin Donovan in Pivotal Role

RZA's Fox series Gang Related may not have lasted as long as he hoped, but the rapper/filmmaker has plenty to do on the big screen. He's joining Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick in Mr. Right, a comedy about a woman who falls in love with the perfect guy....except that he's a hitman. Paco Cabezas, who directed the dreadful Nicolas Cage thriller, Rage, is behind the camera for this one, but the script was written by Max Landis, who penned Chronicle.

The film Fresno already had a great pair of stars in Judy Greer and Natasha Lyonne, but now the cast has gotten even better with the addition of Aubrey Plaza. She joins the Jamie Bobbitt-directed film along with Molly Shannon, Fred Armisen, Clea Duvall, and Ron Livingston. The story centers on "two co-dependent sisters who work as hotel maids in Fresno."[Variety]

Martin Donovan, who is normally seen alongside Mary Louise Parker in everything from Saved! to Weeds, has just landed a "pivotal" and very secret role in Marvel's Ant-Man.  Filming is already underway so one would think the role is pretty small, which begs the question how important it can really be to the story? Perhaps the character he plays will go on to bigger things in future Marvel movies? Only time will tell. Peyton Reed is directing Ant-Man with Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Corey Stoll, Evangeline Lilly, Bobby Cannavale, Judy Greer, T.I., and John Slattery starring. [THR]

Review: 'Brick Mansions' Starring Paul Walker, RZA, and David Belle

A few months ago, the arrival of Brick Mansions would have only meant something to fans of the original film, Luc Besson's rather incredible District B13. But now the film has been given added weight due to the passing of its star, Paul Walker, making this his final completed work. It's impossible not to get a little teary-eyed at the sight of him in the action-genre he became such a part of. Sure, he'll appear to some degree in next year's Fast & Furious 7 but this is it as far as finished features go. And that only makes it that much sadder the film is a total disaster, one that will also have those District B13 fans crying for an entirely different reason.

The original film eschewed traditional martial arts action for the parkour craze that was sweeping the world at the time, led by star and parkour legend David Belle. There was so much wall-jumping and energetic acrobatics, Belle and his co-stars made Jackie Chan look like he has been standing still his entire career. Because of that, there was concern over this remake toning things down to accommodate Walker who, whatever his talents may be, is not the most fluid of screen combatants. Besson, back penning the screenplay for this one with protégée Camille Delamarre directing, recognizes this and tries to frame the story as more of a comedy than a straight-up brawler. But without the one thing that made the story work, the parkour, there's nothing of note here for the film to hang its hat on.

Besson has always had a...well, let's call it a tenuous grip on class and social issues in his movies, but Brick Mansions dumbs them down to crazy levels. The slums of Paris are replaced by a militarized ghetto version of future Detroit that looks a lot like modern day Detroit.  Things haven't gotten so bad that the city's crime-ridden housing project, known as Brick Mansions, has been cut off from the city by a giant barrier manned by armed soldiers. Rich white fat cats plot ways to wring every dollar from the bankrupt city, and the evil mayor's plan is to simply raze Brick Mansions to the ground and start some high-end housing. Wu-Tang Clan member RZA juggles a sketchy Jamaican accent as Tremaine, the chief drug kingpin ruling the city (wait for it) "with an iron fist". The obvious nod to RZA's directorial debut is just one of many such distracting script contrivances. Does RZA actually use the phrase "Cash rules everything around me"? Yes he does. Walker plays Damien, an honorable cop living in the shadow of his slain father, who is recruited to bust into Brick Mansions and put Tremain down. But to do it, he'll need the help of Lino (the returning David Belle), the slum's vigilante hero. Lino is motivated to help when Tremain kidnaps his spicy Latina ex-girlfriend. To make matters worse, she's tied up to a nuclear weapon which will be launched into the city unless a ransom is paid.

So clearly, this isn't to be taken all that seriously, which is good because the script is laughably atrocious. They try to make some campy headway out of the mismatched cop pairing, with Damien watching in slack-jawed awe as Lino soars through the air and slithers through narrow crevasses with impossible ease. Parkour was a big deal when the first film came out, and Belle was one of the guys who created the art form, but other than an amazingly kinetic opening sequence he doesn't get a chance to show much. Most of the action is of a pace Walker can handle, shot unimaginatively by Delamarre. Not that a film like this demands a lot of critical thinking from the audience, but the conclusion is a boondoggle of implausibilities where all character logic goes out the window like one of Belle's signature leaps.

And it's especially sad because we all want to see Walker's final films show him in the best possible light. We want him to go out on top, don't we? There's already a discomfort in that his final two movies will be chock full of speeding car wrecks. Can't he at least go out in something that will be fun for audiences to watch him in? Unfortunately, Brick Mansions needs to have a wrecking ball taken to it.

DC Readers See 'Brick Mansions' TONIGHT!

We have a last second screening opportunity for any of our readers in and around Washington, DC. Tonight at the AMC Georgetown, 7PM there is a special screening of Paul Walker's final complete film, Brick Mansions also starring David Belle and Rza! All you need to do is click here, and redeem your passes.

In a dystopian Detroit, abandoned brick mansions left from better times now house only the most dangerous criminals. Unable to control the crime, the police constructed a colossal containment wall around this area to protect the rest of the city. Undercover cop Damien Collier (Paul Walker) is determined to bring his father’s killer, Tremaine (RZA) to justice and every day is a battle against corruption. For Lino (David Belle), every day is a fight to live an honest life. Their paths never should have crossed, but when Tremaine kidnaps Lino’s girlfriend, Damien reluctantly accepts the help of the fearless ex-convict, and together they must stop a sinister plot to devastate the entire city. With stylized action featuring thrilling Parkour stunts (David Belle is the co-founder of this physical training discipline), Brick Mansions puts an entertaining twist on the action genre.

New Trailer for 'Brick Mansions' Starring Paul Walker and RZA

A new trailer has been released for Brick Mansions, a remake of the parkour fighting flick District B13, which we have frequently referred to as one of the best action flicks in recent memory. The film is also the final completed performance by the late Paul Walker, starring as an undercover cop who teams up with a local to bust inside a crime lord's high-rise HQ and find a weapon of mass destruction. Think a less brutal version of The Raid: Redemption and you have a pretty good idea of what to expect. There have been some changes to the story by adding a revenge element and tweaking the fighting for Walker's sake, but for the most part this looks very faithful.

RZA co-stars along with David Belle, the parkour king and star of the original film. Directed by Camille Delamarre with a script by Luc Besson, Brick Mansions opens April 25th.

Tony Jaa Throws Some Bows in New Trailer for 'The Protector 2'

As the martial arts excitement continues to build for The Raid 2 (and for damn good reason), let's not forget that there's another genre film that will be hoping to match it in terms of sheer violence. After nine years, Muay Thai superstar Tony Jaa returns for The Protector 2, which finds his character under assault from the cops, rival fighters, and the nieces of a dead mob boss.

Although we've seen a couple of trailers already, a new one has been released which gives us our best look yet at RZA hamming it up as a crime lord running an underground fighting ring that Jaa gets roped into. Meanwhile, Jaa must also find his missing elephant. Yeah, it sounds crazy but the plot is secondary to the fighting, which looks faster and more deadly than the prior film. Let's just say that it doesn't look like Jaa has lost a step, in fact he looks better than ever. Now that he has a key role in Fast & Furious 7, Jaa could making moves in America just as Jet Li did years ago.

The Protector 2 hits theaters on May 2nd, but can be seen March 27th On Demand.

Trailer for Paul Walker's Final Completed Film, 'District B13' Remake 'Brick Mansions'

The original District B13 hit with a ton of impact when it arrived a decade ago, pumped up by the parkour craze that was trendy at the time. The film remains enough of a cult favorite that there wasn't a lot of hope for the American remake, Brick Mansions, even though it brought back wall-jumping master David Belle and teamed him up with the late Paul Walker for his final completed movie. And now that the first trailer is here, those who were skeptical will be happy to see that it looks like a faithful translation.

Co-starring RZA and directed by Camille Delamarre, the story taking place between all the acrobatics centers on a straight-laced cop (Walker) who must stop a Detroit crimelord from unleashing a WMD on the city. To do it he'll need to fight his way through waves of enemies while keeping tabs on his high-flying partner.

If it looks like a Luc Besson film, well, that's because he produced and co-wrote the script just as he did on the first movie.  Brick Mansions hits theaters April 25th.

First Poster for 'Brick Mansions' Starring Paul Walker and RZA

One of the final movies completed by Paul Walker before his death was Brick Mansions, a remake of District B13, a film we have praised here on this site as one of the best modern fight flicks. The first poster has been released featuring Walker, RZA, and parkour master David Belle, who starred in the original flick.

Directed by Camille Delamarre, the film shares some surface similarities to The Raid, and has Walker as a cop who teams up with a vigilante outsider to fight through a drug lord's goons before he can unleash a WMD. Brick Mansions opens April 25th and hopefully we'll get a trailer soon.

The RZA won't be in 'Django Unchained' after all

The list of names that have dropped out of Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained would make for a damn impressive cast all on its own. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Kevin Costner, Sacha Baron Cohen, Kurt Russell, Anthony LaPaglia, and now you can add his buddy RZA to the list.

RZA and Tarantino have worked together plenty in the past, and the director is even "presenting" his directorial debut The Man with the Iron Fists, so this comes a s surprise. ThePlaylist had a chance to speak with RZA and here's what he had to say on the subject....

RZA: "I'm not in 'Django Unchained.  "I gave my role up to a buddy. Can you believe that?"

As for who the "buddy" is, RZA says it's just someone who trained with him, which means it's not likely to be Raekwon or Method Man, folks. Also, those thinking there's some sort of beef between RZA and Tarantino can calm down, as he attributes his departure to being bogged down in the editing room. Makes sense to me.  The Man with the Iron Fists emerges on November 2nd, while Django Unchained hits theaters on December 25th.

The Rza's 'The Man with the Iron Fist' currently shooting in China

According to Twitch, The Rza is currently in China shooting his martial arts vanity project, The Man with the Iron Fist. Eli Roth(Hostel) is along for the trip as co-producer/co-writer/advisor/scary dude. The Rza is starring, his first real leading role, as a blacksmith who forges weapons for a small town in feudal China. They eventually get attacked and are forced to defend themselves. I'm sure there's a ancient, sacred text involved somewhere. There's always a sacred text in these old martial arts flicks.

Last I had heard, there was a rumor that Russell Crowe was coming on board as well, but that's still yet to be confirmed. Crowe and Rza recently worked together in American Gangster, and I guess they shared a love of old kung fu flicks and UTFO or something.

Rza somehow managed to secure $20M of funding from Universal to produce the film, which I think is roughly $20M more than anything the Rza's ever directed before.  I've seen enough clips of Rza's Wu-Tang vs. the Golden Phoenix to know that he can certainly present the feel for those old movies exactly right, but he's clearly very green as a filmmaker. So it's a good thing that Roth is on hand to assist. Regardless of Crowe's involvement, I'm very excited to see how this one turns out. It's the Rza. It's kung fu. It's crazy high-wire fights. How could I not love it already?

Russell Crowe reteams with The Rza in The Man with the Iron Fist

The Rza must've made a pretty cool impression on Russell Crowe while shooting American Gangster together, because this casting news has come completely out of left field. We've known for months that Rza was developing his own martial arts epic, The Man with the Iron Fist, with himself behind the director's chair and Eli Roth(Hostel) co-producing. We don't really know much else. Now we do, as Crowe has signed to play the "baddest man alive", as described by the Wu-Tang Clan member. He told EOnline...

"I won't spoil it for you, but Russell's gonna be the baddest man alive," he told me yesterday at the VMAs. "That man is in fighting shape. That man will knock you out."

Rza and Crowe will be seen together again in Paul Haggis's upcoming film, The Next Three Days.  As for "Iron Fist", details are still slim. Rza will be playing a weaponmaking blacksmith. Not much else is known. Considering the genre and Rza's sensibilities, I'm guessing it'll follow the plot of many of the old Shaw Brother martial arts flicks. An ancient text will get stolen...a lone warrior seeks revenge....whatever.

The fact that Crowe is involved almost guarantees that other big names will follow. Who wouldn't want want to be a part of this production now?

Rza Presents Wu-Tang vs. The Golden Phoenix trailer!

What's the Rza been up to lately? The Wu-Tang Clan producer/rapper/artist extraordinaire has been hella busy. Not only is he co-producing the upcoming remake of The Last Dragon, but he's been cast in the upcoming Todd Phillips comedy, Due Date alongside Robert Downey Jr. Not to mention he's still got that Man with the Iron Fist project he's been rumored to be writing and directing alongside Quentin Tarantino and Eli Roth.

Somehow in the midst of all that, the Rzarector has found time to craft together a project that has been in the works for more than 10 years. The Rza just recently released the trailer for his upcoming kung fu flick, Wu Tang Clan vs. The Golden Phoenix, a film to commemorate his 20th year in the hip hop industry. The Rza stars, and of course the score will be handled by him as well. The high wire stuntwork and choreography features the work of Robert Tai, who worked on the classic The 5 Deadly Venoms. The Jackie Chan Stunt Team and the U.S. Shaolin Team also feature prominently. This one looks awesome. Check out the full trailer below and let us know what you think!
