New Trailer for 'Seventh Son' starring Julianne Moore, Jeff Bridges, Kit Harington, and More

In a few days Julianne Moore will make her first foray into the YA field with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay. Oh wait, that's not exactly true. Nearly three years ago she filmed a role in Seventh Son alongside an impressive cast of Jeff Bridges, Ben Barnes, Djimon Hounsou, Kit Harington, and Alicia Vikander. So where has the film been all this time? Stuck in release date Hell, that's where, but the oft-delayed project is finally headed to theaters next winter, and a new trailer for it has been released.

Based on the first book in Joseph Delaney's The Wardstone Chronicles series, Seventh Son follows a young farmhand (Barnes) who is taken in by Master Gregory (Bridges) and trained in the dark arts in order to stop the evil witch Mother Malkin (Moore).  The most recent trailers have been superior to some of the earlier ones but this still looks like a film that will have  hard time finding a niche in a crowded genre.

Directed by Sergei Bodrov, Seventh Son opens February 6th 2015.

Trailer for YA Adaptation 'Seventh Son' that You Probably Forgot About

Figure this: Jeff Bridges will be starring in just as many YA adaptations as Jennifer Lawrence and Shailene Woodley over the next year. "The Dude" finally got his forever-developing adaptation of The Giver off the ground earlier this month, not that anybody saw it, and next year he'll star in Seven Son, which has been plagued with behind the scenes troubles. More than a year after the first trailer hit a new one has arrived and it looks like a new approach is being taken.

So what's the deal? Seventh Son is based on the first book in The Wardstone Chronicles series, and it began life at Warner Bros. but now falls under the Legendary/Universal banner. That was partially the reason for a nearly two-year delay, although the main reason is the film just didn't have any notable buzz. And clearly producers paid attention to that because this latest trailer is cut in a completely different way, emphasizing the big action and monsters while hyping the studio's success with Godzilla. It's a smart strategy, and with a cast that includes Ben Barnes, Julianne Moore,  Alicia Vikander, Djimon Hounsou, Antje Traue and Olivia Williams it's not hurting for star power.  Here's the official synopsis:

In a time of enchantments when legends and magic collide, the sole remaining warrior of a mystical order (Oscar® winner Jeff Bridges) travels to find a prophesized hero born with incredible powers, the last Seventh Son (Ben Barnes). Torn from his quiet life as a farmhand, the unlikely young hero embarks on a daring adventure with his battle-hardened mentor to vanquish a dark queen (Julianne Moore) and the army of supernatural assassins she has dispatched against their kingdom.

Directed by Sergei Bodrov, Seventh Son opens in 3D February 6th 2015.

'Warcraft' Escapes to 2016; 'Seventh Son' Delayed A Year; 'The Mummy' Reboot Dated

Now that Universal and Legendary Pictures are a tag team combo (the latter was formerly with Warner Bros.), they have a slew of major projects that are looking for release dates. Some are getting bumped around, and at least one is fleeing for its life from the Star Wars juggernaut.

First up, and the only one I really care about, is Duncan Jones' Warcraft film, which has moved from December 18th 2015 to March 11th 2016. Why? Because opening opposite Star Wars: Episode VII is a fool's errand. Right now we know that Paula Patton and Travis Fimmell are set for two of the leads, with Colin Farrell, Paul Dano, and others possibly joining.

It's rarely a good thing when a film that is only a few weeks from release is suddenly delayed by more than a year, but that's the case with Seventh Son. The YA adaptation directed by Sergei Bodrov and starring Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore has been moved from January 2014 to February 6th 2015. Potential disaster in the making? The trailer released some time ago didn't exactly make a lot of waves, so maybe the year will be spent retooling.

Michael Mann's long-developing untitled cyber crime thriller with Chris Hemsworth has been set for January 16th 2015. The film co-stars Viola Davis and "follows a furloughed convict and his American and Chinese partners as they hunt a high-level cybercrime network from Chicago to Los Angeles to Hong Kong to Jakarta." The January date is troubling, to say the least, because it means perhaps there isn't a lot of confidence in it being any good.

And finally, that reboot of The Mummy that probably could've stayed buried has been dated for April 22nd 2016. Produced by Star Trek's Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, the film will be directed by Andres Muschietti (Mama) with a script by Jon Spaihts, writer of Prometheus.

'Seventh Son' Moves to Universal; 'Foxcatcher' gets Award Season Date; 'Ninja Turtles' Bumped Two Months

Lots of release date house cleaning going on all of a sudden, and while I don't normally concern myself with stuff like this, these are all pretty significant moves. The biggest involves Seventh Son, the upcoming fantasy adaptation from director Sergei Bodrov and starring Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore. Now that Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have officially split, with the latter signing a distribution deal with Universal all that's left was to decide who got which projects.

Just days after Legendary opted out of working on the Man of Steel sequel in favor of Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, they've now been given the rights to Seventh Son. That means it will no longer maintain the January 17th release date set by Warner Bros., and will be given a new one by Universal, although it's unclear when that will be. Legendary isn't completely leaving Warner Bros. behind, as they're still involved with Godzilla and 300: Rise of an Empire. They're also moving a few other major projects over to Universal, including Warcraft, a Hot Wheels picture, Mass Effect, and Michael Mann's Cyber thriller.

Next up is Foxcatcher, a film that sounded like a potential Oscar contender from the very beginning thanks to Moneyball director Bennett Miller, and a cast that includes Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo, Steve Carell, and Sienna Miller. Sony Pictures Classics certainly has awards season hopes for it, which is why they've slotted it for release on December 20th, when it will likely get the prestige treatment customary for the studio's Oscar hopefuls. The film tells the weird but true story of John du Pont (Carell), a multimillionaire schizophrenic who built an Olympic-class training facility called Team Foxcatcher on his massive estate. In 1996 he suddenly murdered his longtime friend, gold medal-winning wrestler David Schulz (Ruffalo), accusing him of being part of a major international conspiracy.

And finally, the Michael Bay-produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is getting bumped yet again, but at least this time it's only two months rather than six months. It will now hit theaters on August 8th 2014, apparently because Paramount and Bay want to get some distance between it and Transformers 4, which opens on June 27th. What it sounds like is they want more time to develop some hot new TMNT action figures, while selling more hot new Transformers toys. Whatever, it may be a minor nuisance but it's completely understandable looking at it from the studio perspective. With so many blockbusters cannibalizing one another it's a wise course of action getting some distance between two high-profile films as these. [Deadline]
