Josh Brolin Talks Thanos' Battle in 'Avengers: Infinity War'

He's been teased since The Avengers and seen putting his plan into effect in Guardians of the Galaxy, but Thanos won't become a palpable threat until the two-part Avengers: Infinity War. Before those films arrive in 2018 and 2019 we'll have plenty of chance to see the guy who plays Thanos, Josh Brolin, in other projects. He's currently making the press rounds talking about his role as "Bigfoot" Bjornsen in Inherent Vice, and of course Brolin was asked about playing Thanos, too...

Brolin: “It’s different man, it’s just different.  I don’t have a thing like, “I only do small art films” or “I only do this.”  I just read a story and go, “wow.  That’s cool.”  It’s not, “I want to get into this genre or that genre.”  So Thanos came along.. and I had a good friend Louis D’Esposito who used to be a first AD and is now the co-president of Marvel, and he and I used to train together.  We did Hollow Man together.  He called me up and started talking about this thing.  It was nice because I could intimately talk to him about it.  What I liked. What I didn’t like about the whole idea of it.  But I love the idea of Thanos.”

And who will Thanos be facing? Well, when the film is being split into two parts, plus a whole new crop of Avengers is emerging, it's safe to say Thanos will be very busy...

Brolin: “Ultimately it’s Thanos against everyone.  So why wouldn’t you do that?  I was more nervous doing that than I think I’ve been in long time. I was in front of thirty-two little cameras and I had a face sprayed with iridescent paint.  It’s really exciting, the possibilities of what it could become.”

Brolin will be seen next in Inherent Vice, which opens in select cities on December 12th. [Collider]

Details On How Much Thanos You'll See in 'Guardians of the Galaxy'

Marvel has the market cornered on post-credits sequences consisting of smirking villains only die-hard fanboys will recognize on sight, and the most prominent of these was the emergence of Thanos at the end of The Avengers. His arrival was a pretty big deal and signified something major down the line, so big that the story will build beyond Avengers: Age of Ultron and likely through to The Avengers 3. The next step in Thanos' plan will be seen in Guardians of the Galaxy, and now we have more information on just how much he will factor into the story. Spoilers beyond this point, folks.

With Josh Brolin now set to voice the Mad Titan Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vulture is spilling what they know about what the villain will be doing in the film. He won't be popping up in another secret credits scene, rather he'll appear in holographic form right from the start and will be as such through the majority of the film. The primary villains of the story will be his lieutenants, Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) who will be following his orders and likely trying to acquire the gems to Thanos' most powerful weapon, the Infinity Gauntlet. We'll see at least one more of the gems, probably the one gained by The Collector (Benicio Del Toro) at the end of Thor: The Dark World. As we've talked about numerous times before, the Gauntlet is on Asgard right now in Odin's care. Because most of the Guardians team have ties to Thanos, some familial like Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and others like Drax (Dave Bautista) seeking revenge, the villain is mentioned frequently throughout.

And all of this should lead quite nicely to one epic showdown in the third Avengers, meaning Guardians of the Galaxy is far more important than Marvel has been letting on up to this point.

James Gunn Says 'Guardians of the Galaxy' "Definitely Connected" to 'Avengers 3'

If there's anything Marvel is known for at this point, it's the meticulous plotting of their interconnected Avengers universe. We've seen how one film bridges into the next, often in ways that are unexpected. So with Kevin Feige recently stating that he's got plans laid out well into the future, it should come as no surprise that Marvel's next film, Guardians of the Galaxy, will have an impact on everything that comes next.

While Guardians of the Galaxy is largely a one-off film, with no sequels confirmed at this point, there is at least one aspect that will definitely be carrying over. The villain Thanos, who shares a connection with every member of the team and was first revealed at the end of The Avengers, will appear in the film according to James Gunn. That's not much of a surprise, really, and nor is Gunn telling EW that 'Guardians' is "definitely connected to Avengers 3". Gunn refers to Thanos as "the head of the snake", which is an interesting turn of phrase given all the HYDRA stuff going on in the Marvel world right now. And if you've seen Captain America: The Winter Soldier, HYDRA may be in possession of something Thanos is interested in. Basically, it sounds as if Thanos may be a total no-show for Avengers: Age of Ultron, but he'll be the reason they assemble next time. At this point all we know about him is that he'll be motion-captured, and it'll be interesting to learn who gets that job. Vin Diesel would have been perfect but he's busy playing a raccoon.

Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters on August 1st.

Marvel Unveils the Infinity Gauntlet; The Avengers villain revealed?

After all the hubbub over seeing the cast of The Avengers on stage together for the first time had died down, Marvel still had one more trick up its sleeve. It rolled out a bulky, golden glove, encrusted with shining jewels onto the floor. Comic heads immediately knew what it had to be: The Infinity Gauntlet.

For those that don't know, the Infinity Gauntlet is a glove with six powerful gems embedded within. Each gem posesses complete control over a certain aspect of the universe: space, time, mind, soul, reality, and power. The gauntlet has nearly always been in use by the mad Titan, Thanos, who used it in a grand scheme to appease the personification of Death by killing half of the universe.

We've known for some time that all of Marvel's upcoming movies would tie-in in some way leading up to The Avengers. Does that mean a common enemy in each of them? If so, Thanos seems like the likely guy for the job. Then again, Thor's brother Loki has been involved with the Infinity Gems as well, although I don't think he's a large scale enough character to be the main villain. Tom Hiddleston, the actor portraying Loki, has sortof hinted that he may be in The Avengers as well. To me, that means Loki and Thanos teaming up in some fashion.

Whatever the case may be, I love every story that involves Thanos. He's one of Marvel's most intriguing and unique characters, and a genuine badass. I'd kill to see him represented on the big screen.
