Trouble Comes Around in New 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' Trailer

Tonight the NCAA is televising their first true football playoff championship, and it promises to be right up there with the Super Bowl as one of the most watched sporting events of the year. And since it airs on ESPN, which is owned by Disney, it makes sense they'd want to use it as a platform to deliver a gigantic trailer for this summer's Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Keeping a similarly dark tone as the previous teaser, this one also features a better look at the showdown between Hulk and Tony Stark's Hulkbuster armor. It looks like the team's volatile chemistry has been shaken up even further and only looks to get worse with the robotic villain Ultron (voiced by James Spader) threatening to end humanity. Can they come together as a team and save the day? With Captain America: Civil War promising a standoff between Cap and Iron Man there's a good chance the Avengers won't completely recover.

Avengers: Age of Ultron opens May 1st directed by Joss Whedon.

The Avengers are Unworthy in New Footage from 'Avengers: Age of Ultron'

Those who attended San Diego Comic-Con last summer were treated to the first footage from Avengers: Age of Ultron, and the centerpiece of it was a scene featuring the team lounging around Tony Stark's crib. As they all tried unsuccessfully to lift Thor's hammer, it looked like Joss Whedon was keep the light-hearted tone of the first film. Well, then we got the official trailer last week and it was all doom 'n gloom, but rest assured there is plenty of fun to be had.

Since the trailer leaked before it was to debut on tonight's Agents of SHIELD, Marvel instead released an extended version which features the hammer-lifting scene. The party is quickly interrupted by that wet blanket Ultron (menacingly voiced by James Spader), who proceeds to tell them that nobody in the room is worthy. Opening May 1st 2015, Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, James Spader, Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Paul Bettany, Don Cheadle, Andy Serkis, and Samuel L. Jackson. We'll update this trailer with a better one soon, but for now enjoy this crappy bootleg version.

Hawkeye's Terrible New Costume in 'Avengers: Age of Ultron'; Kevin Feige and Joss Whedon Talk Hulkbuster Armor

Hawkeye is one of the two members of the Avengers who have no superhuman powers. He's there for his incredible archery skills and combat experience, and his costume in the first film reflected that he's a soldier first and foremost. But clearly something has changed in Avengers: Age of Ultron because his costume is pretty ridiculous.

Empire Magazine has released a pair of new set photos that show Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, with Joss Whedon teaching him how to fire his bow. And that costume he's wearing looks like something Magneto might have given away to Goodwill, but certainly it doesn't fit what an agile soldier would want to wear. There may be a storyline reason for it that we don't know about because the Comic-Con posters show him wearing what he wore in the first film.

Hawkeye's not the only one sporting some different duds. The part of the Comic-Con teaser footage that drew the biggest cheers was a brief battle between Hulk and Tony Stark in his vaunted Hulkbuster armor. Kevin Feige and Joss Whedon were asked about the suit's part in the story, and as expected they were pretty vague.

Feige: 'It's a bespoke suit. The back-up plan in case things go awry."

Whedon:  "The Hulkbuster is from after my time [as a reader], but even I knew what a big deal it was. It makes sense because there's no one who can really go up against Hulk, but more importantly, those guys are best friends, so what that battle is and what it means is fascinating to me."

Are we seeing the beginning of a feud that leads to Banner perhaps leaving the Avengers and going off on his own?  Avengers: Age of Ultron opens May 1st 2015.

Comic-Con: Patrick Wilson Exits 'Ant-Man'; Four Major Female Roles in 'Avengers: Age of Ultron'

Comic-Con is in full swing and of course most of the questions making their way throughout have to do with Marvel, specifically Ant-Man and Avengers: Age of Ultron. Both have a lot of question marks surroundings them right now, and even when we get answers they only lead to more questions.

First up, Deadline reports the Ant-Man has gone a bit of a shift with the loss of Patrick Wilson. He's had to split due to scheduling conflicts, and it's not like we really knew his role, anyway. But at least he left of his own accord and not like supporting players Matt Gerard and Kevin Weisman, who had their characters written out in the most recent script. The Ant-Man cast is expected to be on hand tomorrow so we should learn more then. The film opens July 17th 205.

A recurring Marvel demand from fans is for one of their female heroes to get a solo film, with many thinking Black Widow is the most likely choice. But there are plenty of kick ass females to be found Avengers: Age of Ultron besides her. In fact, Joss Whedon told HeyUGuys there were four prominent female roles in the film. So who do we think they are? Obviously, Black Widow is one. Scarlet Witch would be another. Maria Hill? Is she going to be that much of a fixture with SHIELD basically disbanded? Okay, so who is the fourth? Janet van Dyne aka the Wasp? Ms. Marvel? Or is there someone else we don't know about yet? Your guess is as good as mine.

Details on Vision, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver in 'Avengers: Age of Ultron'

Who says we need to wait until Marvel's Comic-Con panel for news on Avengers: Age of Ultron? Thanks to EW the floodgates have opened with early images and plot details on the film's robotic villain. Now there's even more info, only this time it deals with the sibling duo of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, played by Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and the android Avenger known as the Vision.

Joss Whedon's plans for the brother/sister combo harken back to their earliest appearances in the comics when they were on the side of evil, only now rather than being a part of Magneto's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants (20th Century Fox owns the rights to Magneto, so he's out.), they'll be aligned with Ultron...

Whedon: "They’re on Team Ultron, which makes things really hard for the Avengers because all of sudden they’re dealing with powers that they’re not used to....With the [first] Avengers, everybody pretty much had the power of being able to punch somebody. And now we have a woman who can get inside your head and move objects, and a boy that can move faster than anything, and a robot [Ultron] who can self-replicate and is out of his mind. So all of sudden, it’s a darker, weirder, tougher world that they’re living in.”
Because of his hyper speed powers, Quicksilver is known to be arrogant, irrational, and totally impulsive, but he's also fiercely protective of his sister. All of these traits will come into play in the film, as well.

Taylor-Johnson: "There's a lot of clashing. He's quick tempered. He gets agitated. He's impatient. But he's super protective. They're very yin-and-yang in that twin sense. In his power, he's physical and she's psychological. My character is very much on the frontline, but he can be quite emotional. You see this beautiful tenderness between them."

Another new character being introduced is the android Vision, only he'll be played by Paul Bettany, the voice of Tony Stark's computer system, JARVIS. Is there a connection? Of course there is. Is Whedon going to tell us anything about it? Of course he's not.

Whedon: "It's not coincidence. And I'm not going to tell you any more about The Vision."

Vision and Scarlet Witch become lovers in the comics and even have a pair of children together (don't ask how that worked out), and it will be interesting to see if that's a route Marvel takes further down the line. Avengers: Age of Ultron opens May 1st 2015.

'Avengers: Age of Ultron' Plot Details Reveal Ultron's "Path to Peace"

The logical assumption after The Avengers was that Thanos would be the villain of the movie's sequel, but obviously that wasn't the case when Avengers: Age of Ultron was announced. The purple-skinned harbinger of death will probably be a factor in a third film, but for now it's the sentient robot Ultron the Avengers have to contend with, and after revealing the first official images yesterday EW now has spilled some major plot details, including a little bit of dialogue.

As we learned yesterday, Tony Stark has basically hung up his Iron Man suit and has begun letting his remote armored drones do the job, one of which will turn out to be Ultron. But it goes a little bit deeper than that...

The Avengers sequel begins with Stark’s latest plan to fix the world: Ultron will be an all-seeing, all-knowing captain of a planetary police force known as the Iron Legion, a team of robotic beat cops who resemble blue-and-white versions of the Iron Man suit but have no human core—and less soul than a Carpenters album. If it all works out, the superheroes can rest easy.

And because Stark can't leave well enough alone, he takes things one step too far by giving Ultron elements of his own personality, specifically his cynicism but lacking in any ability to sympathize. He becomes what can't be described as a villain per se, but something that wants to bring about world peace, and like all artificial intelligences we've seen in movies, he figures the best way to go about it is to wipe out humans. It's all summed up pretty good in this piece of actual dialogue from the film, so just imagine this in the snarky voice of James Spader....

"I know you're 'good' people, I know you mean well… but you just didn't think it through… There is only one path to peace… your extermination."

All of this is preceded by a party scene that plays out just as prior stories said it would, with the team at Stark's penthouse home celebrating a victory. The only difference is that the festivities are interrupted by Ultron and his Legionnaires...

That’s when all hell breaks loose. The Legionnaires have suddenly activated, and are inexplicably trying to kill the heroes. In the chaos, Ultron—in one of his first, metallic forms—announces his new plan to bring peace to the planet—by eradicating the most destructive thing that walks on it: humans.

In the midst of the assault scene, Downey finds himself suspended 50 feet above the set, riding piggyback on an actor in a motion-capture suit who will be digitally replaced with a hovering, hostile Legionnaire.

With no armor at his disposal, Stark grabs the only weapon handy—a fondue fork—and jams it into the robot soldier’s neck as they bang around the ceiling. “The deadliest fondue fork in all the land!” Whedon jokes. “From Odin’s melted cheese, I shall destroy thee!”

Avengers: Age of Ultron is filming now for release next year on May 1st.

Marvel Shake-Ups: Drew Goddard Reportedly Exits 'Daredevil'; More on Edgar Wright Leaving 'Ant-Man'

After all of these years that Marvel has been running like a well-oiled machine, suddenly it seems that the brakes are starting to fly off. Last night came the shocking news that Edgar Wright had exited Ant-Man, a film he had been attached to for eight years (!!!), over creative differences. And while there's more information on that coming out, Marvel may have just been smacked again as Latino Review reports Drew Goddard has departed the upcoming Dardevil series to air on Netflix.

So what the heck is going on? Let's start with Daredevil, although there isn't much else to report as of yet. Goddard, who co-wrote and directed The Cabin in the Woods with Joss Whedon and is attached to a Sinister Six film over at Sony, has left the project he was expected to be the showrunner for. He was also to direct and write the very first episode. Is this his way of lodging a protest over Wright's exit? It could just be that Sinister Six is eating up more time than he expected. Only time will tell but this is probably not how Marvel expected to go into the holiday weekend.

And more from Latino Review, who are reporting that massive rewrites on the Ant-Man script are what caused Wright to bolt.  Marvel execs far above Kevin Feige, who worked with co-writers Wright and Joe Cornish to fit the story closer with the cinematic universe, apparently gave the script to a number of other low-level writers in the Marvel bullpen. The result was a "homogenized" story that Wright couldn't put his name on, and so he met with Marvel on Friday and the formal announcement was made hours later.

The big question is why Marvel and Disney would suddenly feel they needed to run Wright off the project, and considering they are expecting to reveal a new director soon it suggests they saw this coming. My thought on the subject is this: Edgar Wright is too unique of a personality for a film Marvel sees as only a cog in the machine.  It's one thing to have Whedon directing the mothership Avengers films, but look at the other movies. Thor 2, Captain America 2, Guardians of the Galaxy, and even Iron Man 3, all directed by those who are either TV directors, guys looking for their big break, or those looking to make a comeback. Chances are that Wright's version still didn't quite gel with the larger universe, and Marvel already has one "black sheep" film in Guardians of the Galaxy. Why risk another so soon? Feige was apparently in Wright's corner on this one, and so is Whedon who showed his dissent in symbolic fashion on his Twitter page...

So there you have it. As of now Ant-Man is still on target for a July 2015 release and Daredevil should begin shooting soon for air next year.

New Trailer for Joss Whedon-Scripted Supernatural Romance ' In Your Eyes'

Oh, and you expect Joss Whedon to do a traditional romance movie? Of course not, and he's taking a couple of different tracts with In Your Eyes, a supernatural romance he wrote with Brin Hill directing. The film only just debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival a few days ago, and yet it's already available for purchase On Demand through Vimeo. Is it worth the $5 price tag? Check out the trailer and judge for yourself.

Starring Zoe Kazan (Ruby Sparks) and Michael Stahl-David (Cloverfield), the story centers on the metaphysical connection between a bored east coast housewife and a New Mexico ex-con, sparking a long-distance romance that defies description. Whedon's usual wit and charm seem to be at play here, and Kazan is an actress who has an endless amount of appeal.

In Your Eyes also stars Nikki Reed, Steve Harris, Jennifer Grey, Mark Feurerstein and Steve Howey.

'The Avengers 2' Video Reveals Captain America's New Costume; Joss Whedon Apologizes to South Korea

Filming on Avengers: Age of Ultron has moved to South Korea, where filming will cause the poor people there no end of troubles. In fact, Joss Whedon understands just how much damage a major production such as this can do, which is why he's already come out and apologized ahead of time to Seoul's residents...

Apparently there's so much destruction that a certain Avenger will be in need of some fresh threads to get through it. A leaked set video shows Captain America in various action sequences, including one atop a movie truck. He also seems to be sporting a brand new outfit, which he'll need after everything that went down in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Avengers: Age of Ultron opens May 1st 2015.

New Footage In Latest 'Agents of SHIELD' Preview

In just a few hours Marvel and Joss Whedon will begin their domination of the small screen with Agents of SHIELD. There have been an exhaustive number of teasers up to this point, but with the debut right around the corner, we're now getting a look at what the entire season has in store, assuming the show is taken to series. Which it undoubtedly will. Right? Surely a Marvel live-action show can't fail?

The latest trailer or preview is taken from the first few episodes, and shows some of the early dissension in the team, and Agent Coulson's return from the grave. Coulson seems to be the great uniter of the Marvel Universe, as it will be his job again to bring a bunch of combustible personalities together into a cohesive force. What stands out most to me is that this will be a series with its feet planted in multiple genres: cop procedural, X-files paranormal investigation, and of course superheroes.

Agents of SHIELD premieres tonight at 8pm on ABC, and our own +Julian Lytle will be recapping it every Wednesday morning. Will you be tuning in tonight or what?

Joss Whedon Helped Rewrite Scenes in 'Thor: The Dark World'

Marvel already has Joss Whedon running around all over the place trying to maintain the cohesiveness of their superhero universe. Aside from prepping The Avengers: Age of Ultron, he also wrote and directed the pilot to next week's Agents of SHIELD, and serves as consultant to all of the studio's projects. Part of that job includes swooping in to save the day when a director needs his help on a film, and it appears that's exactly what he had to do with Thor: The Dark World.

While talking to SFX, director Alan Taylor revealed that he had a handful of troublesome scenes that he just couldn't get a handle on, and so Whedon was flown to London to give them a shot. Sounds like it worked out pretty well, at least from Taylor's perspective....

Taylor: “Joss came in to save our lives a couple of times,” laughs the director. “We had a major scene that was not working on the page at all in London, and he basically got airlifted in, like a SWAT team or something. He came down, rewrote the scene, and before he got back to his plane I sort of grabbed him and said, ‘And this scene and this scene?’ And he rewrote two other scenes that I thought had problems. Then finally we let go of him, he took off again, and we shot the scenes; and they were just much better and much lighter on their feet. Much more fun, much more surprising than what we had been trying to do. I can relate to guys who come out of the TV world, since that’s where I come from. And being able to land and work and solve a problem quickly… I really was grateful.”

Reshoots had been taking place to add in more of Tom Hiddleston's Loki, because there can never be too much of a great thing, but it's unclear if Whedon's involvement had anything to do with it. I guess we'll know if the phrase "mewling quim" turns up.  This isn't the first time Whedon has helped out on another Marvel project, as he pitched in on the Captain America: The First Avenger script.

Thor: The Dark World opens November 8th.

'Iron Man 3' and 'The Avengers' Animatics Reveal New Ending and The Wasp; Joss Whedon Talks Killing Characters

Those who read Marvel comics regularly probably have recognized that at times it seems they enter into major crossover events with the question "Who can we kill off?". It doesn't necessarily make for the most organic of stories coming from perspective, and thankfully Joss Whedon doesn't subscribe to that approach when it comes to the Marvel movies he's spearheading. While he's already killed off the popular Agent Coulson, it didn't really stick as the character will be back for Agents of SHIELD. So what would it take for him to off an Avenger for good? While talking to EW, he revealed that it would take a major whopper of a story...

Whedon: "I'd have to have a really good reason, a really great sequence for [Marvel executives] to go, 'We'll cut off a potential franchise, that's fine!' They know as any good studio does, that without some stakes, some real danger, how involved can we get?" We don't just rule it out across the board, but neither is the mission statement 'Who can we kill?' We try to build the story organically and go, 'How hard can we make it on these people?' You go to the movies to see people you love suffer-that's why you go to the movies."

Unless they're Uncle Ben or Bruce Wayne's parents, nobody really stays dead in comics anyway. So I'd love it if Whedon would "kill off" a few heroes, only to bring them back later. And they should make it a character fans really love, too, like Iron Fist. Have him pop up in the beginning of Avengers: Age of Ultron and get vaporized in the span of seconds. That would be awesome.

Anyway, storyboard artist Federico D'Alessandro, who has been working with Marvel ever since Thor, has released a number of the unused animatics for Iron Man 3 and The Avengers. The Iron Man 3 ones show an alternate version of the final battle, concluding with a more complete "ending" for Ben Kingsley's Mandarin. Whedon has spoken frequently about his early plans to include Janet Van Dyne aka Wasp as part of the Avengers roster, before settling on Black Widow, and a close look at one of these animatics show Wasp in the frame. Keep an eye out for her around the 17 second mark.

Joss Whedon Talks Ultron in 'The Avengers' Sequel

Joss Whedon hit us with a little misdirection when it comes to the big baddie for Phase Two of Marvel's cinematic universe. The conclusion of The Avengers led us to believe it would be the mad Titan Thanos who would be making our heroes' lives miserable, but the Comic-Con reveal that it would actually be Ultron took everyone by surprise. Ultron is arguably the Avengers' most consistent and dangerous threat, with a hatred for them that runs deep, and those seem to be the reasons why Whedon fell in love with the invincible android.

While talking to EW, Whedon talked a little bit about The Avengers: Age of Ultron, and what differences we can expect from the comic book version of Ultron...

Whedon: “I knew right away what I wanted to do with him. He’s always trying to destroy the Avengers, goddamn it, he’s got a bee in his bonnet. He’s not a happy guy, which means he’s an interesting guy. He’s got pain. And the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff. So we’ll take away some of those powers because at some point everybody becomes magic, and I already have someone who’s a witch.”

The "witch" he's referring to is the Scarlet Witch, Wanda Maximoff, a mutant sorceress gifted with chaos magic that allows her to basically do anything she wants. Because of a deal struck with 20th Century Fox, Whedon can use her even though she's also part of the X-men universe, but her mutant heritage can't be referenced at all. Elizabeth Olsen is said to be the frontrunner for the role right now, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson as her brother, Quicksilver.

As for Ultron, in the comics he was invented by Hank Pym, the Avenger known as Ant-Man and Giant Man. Pym implanted him with his own brain patterns, and when Ultron gains sentience he develops an irrational hatred towards his "father" and everything he loves. Built out of adamantium, he's virtually indestructible and has a number of powers ranging from super strength, speed, mind control, and more. He's a definite bad ass, and I can't wait to see what Whedon does with him.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron arrives on May 1st 2015.

The Team Assembles in New 'Agents of SHIELD' Poster

The premiere of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD is only about six weeks away, and even to the select few who caught the pilot episode at Comic-Con there are still a great many questions about what the series will be. Although it will fit in some way to the larger Marvel cinematic universe, it also has to work as a standalone network series, and thus will have to endure the same growing pains that all episodic television must go through. Watching how it evolves over time should be fascinating, and I expect that it will look very different by the season finale than it will in the first few episodes.

A new poster for the show has been released, and it's notable only because it features most of the principle cast, including Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, whose return from the dead will be one of the driving mysteries. But it sounds like there will be plenty of others, and audiences shouldn't expect each episode to look or feel the same as the last, at least not according to Joss Whedon, who will direct the pilot before handing the creative reins over to his brother Jed and Maurissa Tancharoen. Speaking at the Television Critics Association press tour, Whedon said...

Whedon: “Every week, it’s not going to be some new hero. There could be a device. There could be a mystery. There are so many aspects to what’s happened since everybody in the world found out that there is a superhero team, and there were aliens that invaded New York, and we want to be able to change it up every week. We want to be able to deal with every aspect: the spy stuff, the hero stuff, the heartfelt stuff. We want to make sure that … every week, you get something that feels a little bit different so it’s not just, you know, turkey every day.”

Marvel's Agents of SHIELD debuts on ABC at 8pm on September 24th.

Agent Coulson Won't Be Appearing in 'The Avengers: Age of Ultron'

It was a big deal when the beloved Agent Coulson took a Loki spear to the chest and died in The Avengers. His death rallied the team, but at the same time devastated fans who loved Clark Gregg's portrayal. Fortunately, he's alive and well in ABC's Agents of SHIELD TV series, but does that mean we'll be seeing him on the big screen again? Possibly in The Avengers: Age of Ultron?

While talking to the AP, Joss Whedon revealed that Coulson isn't part of the story for his sequel to The Avengers, and he has some pretty good reasons why....

Whedon: "Right now it's not something I'm pursuing because I have so much going on in 'Avengers 2.' Finding out that Coulson is alive would be an entire B story. And I already have too much movie. That's better than the other thing."

He didn't completely write off the idea of Coulson appearing in a future movie, but it sounds as if he wants to make sure there isn't too much character crossover...

Whedon:  "But we also have the movies and we have TV and we need to make sure there's some crossover, but not so much that people go, 'Well, I don't need to see that movie. I saw it on TV.' If we do that (Marvel Studios President) Kevin Feige is going to come after me with a pitchfork."

Marvel's Agents of SHIELD premieres on Tuesday September 24th at 8pm.

Joss Whedon Talks 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' and Why Hank Pym Isn't In It

There was really only one Internet-crushing reveal during the Marvel Studios panel at Comic-Con, but what it was has had journos buzzing for the last two days. Joss Whedon announcing The Avengers: Age of Ultron is the title of his upcoming Marvel sequel set off a whirlwind of possibilities, but mostly it let us in on who the primary villain for the film would be. The Age of Ultron storyline in the comics is about as recent as they come, only concluding less than two months ago, and while nobody expects Whedon's story to resemble that time-traveling plotline, it sounds as if major elements of Ultron's origin are going to be changed.

Ultron is an evil, sentient android who is basically unstoppable because he evolves after every battle. He was created by Hank Pym, the Avenger known as Ant-Man (or Giant-Man or Yellowjacket), who has his own film coming from director Edgar Wright. Ultron was also responsible for the creation of Vision, the android Avenger who is rumored to be on the team in the sequel, possibly played by Vin Diesel. But the Ant-Man film doesn't open until months after 'Ultron', and Whedon insists Pym isn't really needed for this particular story. He tells i09...

Whedon: “We don't have to have him. It works very simply -- this is Marvel cinema, not Marvel comics. One thing [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige has a genius for is knowing what to hold onto and what to let go of. You can invoke the feeling you had and play with the characters you love and remain true to the needs of the film.”

He would clarify it further while talking to HeyUGuys, saying outright that Pym won't be in the film at all...

Whedon: "We’re doing our own version of the origin story of Ultron. The other thing is, in the origin story, there was Hank Pym. So a lot of people assumed that he was going to be in the mix, but he’s not. Because we’re basically taking the things from the comics for the movies that we need and can use. A lot of stuff has to fall by the wayside. Ultron was their chief villain. He’s been the Avengers villain for so long. I was amazed anybody was surprised that it was going to be him in the movie. We are crafting our own version of it where his origin comes more directly from the Avengers we already know about.”

The biggest change coming from the Ultron news was that it changed our view of Thanos, who has been assumed to be the main villain. But now the always chatty Feige has confirmed he'll be shifted over to Guardians of the Galaxy, which consists of characters who all have a personal score to settle with him. We also won't be seeing Ultron anywhere until The Avengers: Age of Ultron. But will there be clues popping up in the other films? That much we still don't know.

Joss Whedon Reveals 'The Avengers: Age of Ultron'; 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Cast Confirmed

The Marvel panel has just wrapped at Comic-Con, and Marvel dropped a ton of news, but not what everybody was expecting. Introducing the Guardians of the Galaxy cast, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed that Djimon Hounsou is playing Korath the Pursuer, a cybernetic member of the alien Kree empire and typically an ally of Ronan the Accuser, who will be played by Lee Pace. Hounsou leaked that Korath will be an ally of Thanos in the film, but who knows if that's going to hold up. Also confirmed was Karen Gillan as Nebula, a space pirate and potentially Thanos' granddaughter. Benicio Del Toro will also play the Elder of the Universe known as The Collector, the first to recognize the threat of Thanos.

The big news came right at the end, as Joss Whedon hit the stage floor right at the end of the show, and teased a promo video. The footage featured a metal object being pounded from all sides, with prophetic words in the background about the team's demise. But then the object revolves, and it's revealed to be the face of Ultron, the android enemy of the Avengers, created by Hank "Ant-Man" Pym. The title of the film was then revealed to be The Avengers: Age of Ultron, arriving in the summer of 2015.

So the big news to take from this is that it will be Ultron in The Avengers sequel, and not Thanos. It looks like Thanos will be appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy, which makes sense considering every character has close ties to him. Age of Ultron is also a fairly recent Marvel comics crossover storyline, only completing about a month ago. It had Wolverine going back in time to kill Hank Pym before he could create Ultron, because in the present the android has wiped out nearly all of the superheroes. It's a storyline that closely resembles Xmen: Days of Future Past, ironically.

Benicio Del Toro's 'Guardians of the Galaxy' role revealed? No 'The Avengers 2' for Joss Whedon without Robert Downey Jr.

The pace has definitely picked up as Marvel plunges further into their Phase Two plans. We've learned a great deal already about Joss Whedon's sequel to The Avengers, with the mutants Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch likely to appear, assuming this little squabble with 20th Century Fox gets ironed out. And the casting for the offbeat Guardians of the Galaxy has been one of the more fascinating things to watch over the last couple of weeks. But now we've got updates on both films, one a strong rumor, and the other a rather bold pronouncement.

The latest addition to the Guardians of the Galaxy cast was Benicio Del Toro, and his role is still being kept a mystery. What we know is that he's signed on for multiple movies, making him a fairly important piece of the overall landscape. Sources over at CBM are saying that Del Toro's role is actually that of Taneleer Tivan aka The Collector, one of the powerful Elders of the Universe. You may recall that the character was mentioned when Ophelia Lovibond came aboard, with the speculation that she would be playing an assistant to his scheme of "collecting" rare objects and species. He's run afoul of the villain Thanos many times, so his inclusion in the film would make a lot of sense.  If Marvel has bigger plans for him, that suggests that a huge intergalactic crossover of sorts is in the works, and may stretch beyond The Avengers 2 and into Phase Three. Nothing's been confirmed, but this rumor at least has some legs under it.  Starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Michael Rooker, Ophelia Lovibond, John C. Reilly, Enzo Cilenti, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, and Glenn Close, Guardians of the Galaxy begins filming soon for release on August 1st 2014.

Speaking of The Avengers 2, there's been a good deal of concern that Robert Downey Jr. was finished donning the Iron Man armor. Contract talks with him, and the majority of the film's cast, had turned ugly as they all demanded a larger piece of the piece of the pie. Considering the roughly $50M Downey was able to earn last time, while his co-stars were stuck in low ball deals, it got contentious pretty quickly. It's been suggested that Iron Man could be treated like James Bond, simply put another actor in the role and everything will be fine. Joss Whedon vehemently disagrees with that idea, and won't stick around if that's the route Marvel takes...

Whedon: "He is Iron Man. He is Iron Man in the way that Sean Connery was James Bond. I have no intention of making 'Avengers 2' without him, nor do I think I’ll be called upon to do that. I don't think it's in my interest, Marvel's interest, or his interest, and I think everything will be fine."

There's a good chance Downey is done making Iron Man solo films, but Marvel will do everything in their power to bring him back every time the Avengers get assembled. They won't risk their $1B franchise over a simple salary dispute.

If there's one thing that Whedon is known for it's crafting strong, female heroines for pretty much every project he's undertaken, and he gave us a little bit of that with Black Widow although she was a little underutilized. Last year he hinted at more female heroes joining the Avengers for the follow-up, and now he continues to push for that to happen. He even hints at possibly making a superheroine movie himself during a conversation with The Daily Beast...

Whedon: "Toymakers will tell you they won’t sell enough, and movie people will point to the two terrible superheroine movies that were made and say, You see? It can’t be done. It’s stupid, and I’m hoping The Hunger Games will lead to a paradigm shift. It’s frustrating to me that I don’t see anybody developing one of these movies. It actually pisses me off. My daughter watched The Avengers and was like, 'My favorite characters were the Black Widow and Maria Hill,' and I thought, Yeah, of course they were. I read a beautiful thing Junot Diaz wrote: 'If you want to make a human being into a monster, deny them, at the cultural level, any reflection of themselves.....And back to the female-hero thing, I’m not going to let nobody do it. It doesn’t have to be me, but it could be."

He's off to a pretty good start by adding the Scarlet Witch to the roster, and the rumors of Carol "Captain Marvel" Danvers and The Wasp appearing have been floating around for awhile. My vote is that they not only add a female, but mix in a bit more ethnic diversity by using another Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, who now goes under the name of Pulsar. Not only was she a member of  the Avengers, she was their leader for a time.

The Avengers 2 is still a long ways off, due to open on May 1st 2015.

Is that Luke Cage in the extended 'Agents of SHIELD' trailer?

The return of Agent Coulson isn't the only mystery circulating around Marvel's Agents of SHIELD. There's also the question of who Angel alum J. August Richards is playing. His is the only character not to be fully revealed, and if there's one thing we know about Marvel and Joss Whedon, it's that nothing is hidden without very good reason. That has led to speculation that he may be Luke "Power Man" Cage, or possibly Rage of the New Warriors. Last Sunday's teaser didn't tell us all that much, but the new extended cut is going to get those rumors buzzing again.

A full two minutes longer than the teaser, the footage re-introduces Coulson (Clark Gregg) in snappy Whedon fashion, with Agent Ward (Brett Dalton) claiming to not know all of the details of his death because he's only Level 6 clearance. In steps Coulson who boldly proclaims "Welcome to Level 7". Ooooooohhhhh mysterious! We see more of Ming-Na Wen as the butt-kicking Melinda May, who is obviously much more than "just a pilot".

But it's the footage of Richards that could be the most revealing. In his couple of appearances we see him rescuing a civilian from a burning building, demonstrating not only some level of super-strength, but also durability. Both are attributes possessed by Luke Cage, but of course he could be playing someone entirely new. If that were the case, though, why keep it a secret?

Marvel's Agents of SHIELD will air on Tuesday nights on ABC.
