A Look at Marvel's Past, Present, and Future in New Video

So while Marvel's presentation at Comic-Con was at least a tiny bit disappointing, one of the highlights was how they kicked off the show. No, we didn't get Tom Hiddleston showing up as Loki or anything like that, or James Spader coming out as Ultron like some thought, but we were treated to this rather awesome video covering the entirety of Marvel's Phase 1 and Phase 2 films, all the way up to Guardians of the Galaxy.

You can now check out that entire video for yourself, but be warned that it could spoil a little bit from Guardians of the Galaxy which is in theaters now.

Gravity - I'm sure everyone had a dream of becoming an astronaut at some point in their lives. Well, Alfonso Cuaron has probably shattered the dreams of many when he made this film, but regardless, Cuaron still makes space that much more beautiful, mysterious, and dark. Ultimately, the movie is the story of survival, perseverance in fear, and humanity, with plenty of suspenseful moments packed throughout. The film stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.

'Thor: The Dark World' Blu-Ray to Include Marvel One-Shot Short 'All Hail the King'

While there is still no official release date for Marvel's Thor: The Dark World blu-ray, the BBFC have gone ahead and rated all of the special features, and there is at least one surprise. While it includes the expected deleted scenes, featurettes, and an "exclusive" look at Captain America: The Winter Soldier, there will also be a new Marvel One-Shot short film titled All Hail the King.

As of now there are no details on what it will be about, but the title suggests something to do with the Asgardians, possibly involving Loki and his father Odin. We know that Ben Kingsley is reprising his Iron Man 3 character in a One-Shot but it wouldn't make much sense included in this particular set, but until we know more nothing can be said for certain. Here's the full list of special features to be found on the Thor: The Dark World home release, which you can pre-order here.

Box Office: 'Desolation of Smaug' Burns up 'Frozen'; 'A Madea Christmas' Opens Small

    1. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug- $73.6M
The middle chapter of Peter Jackson's latest Tolkien trilogy, The Desolation of Smaug, opened strong with $73.6M, performing well in midnight sneaks and IMAX, which accounted for $9M of the total. The film even did well overseas, as the New Zealand-based production was expected to, adding another $53M to the total. So what's the problem? Well, detractors will be quick to point out that the domestic debit is $11M less than An Unexpected Journey last year, although this isn't too surprising. Many considered that film a disappointment, so some hold-over was anticipated. You won't hear Jackson complaining, though, as the film moves into 4th place on the all-time list for December premieres.
    2. Frozen- $22.1M/$164.3M
    3. Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas- $16M
Perhaps creeped out by an ad campaign with kids sitting on Madea's lap, Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas opened to the smallest debut ever for a Madea film at $16M. These movies have long had a very loyal, dedicated audience who turn out annually for junk like Madea's Witness Protection and Madea Goes to Jail to an average $25M opening. And yet somehow Perry couldn't make this work even with the holiday theme, suggesting some of the sheen is coming off his favored character. Still, these movies don't cost much and generally do strong business on DVD/Blu-Ray, so Perry and Lionsgate aren't sweating this.
    4. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire- $13.1M/$356.9M
    5. Thor: The Dark World- $2.7M/$198.1M
    6. Out of the Furnace- $2.3M/$9.4M
    7. Delivery Man- $1.8M/$27.9M
    8.  Philomena- $1.7M/$11M
    9. The Book Thief- $1.67M/$14.8M
    10. Homefront- $1.63M/$18.4M

It was a pretty good weekend for two major movies in limited release. First is American Hustle, the star-studded ABSCAM caper from David O. Russell scoring $690K in only six sites. Disney's Mary Poppins biopic Saving Mr. Banks performed less well, perhaps because its audience was at American Hustle, earning $421K at 15 theaters.

Box Office: "Frozen' Freezes Out 'Catching Fire' and 'Out of the Furnace'

    1. Frozen- $31.6M/$134.2M
Traditionally, the post-Thanksgiving is a barren one for new releases, and this year is no different. Frozen took advantage and topped the chart with $31M, slipping 53% in its second weekend, slightly lower than Tangled's 55% dip back in 2010.  Internationally the film has hauled in another $55M for a $190M worldwide total, so Disney has to be pretty happy all around. With Oscar buzz swelling for it in the Best Animated Feature category there's little reason to think Frozen will go away any time soon.
    2. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire- $27M/$336.6M
    3. Out of the Furnace- $5.3M
Hey, dark and moody films just don't do well this time of year as folks are wrapped up in the holiday spirit. Oddly enough it's also awards season when movies like this tend to garner significant critical acclaim. Out of the Furnace didn't have the benefit of glowing reviews, though, despite an A-list cast of potential Oscar contenders Christian Bale and Forest Whitaker. Audiences have no interest in a brooding movie like this right now, and there's no guarantee it will make back the $20M+ production budget. Probably not, actually.
    4. Thor: The Dark World- $4.7M/$193.6M
    5. Delivery Man- $3.7M/$24.7M
    6. Homefront- $3.3M/$15.2M
    7. The Book Thief- $2.7M/$12M
    8. The Best Man Holiday- $2.6M/$67.2M
    9. Philomena- $2.2M/$8.2M
    10. Dallas Buyers Club- $1.4M/$12.4M

Maybe folk music isn't as dead a musical form as we thought? The Coen Brothers' Inside Llewyn Davis, riding a ton of Best Actor heat for star Oscar Isaac, opened like gangbusters with $401K in only 4 locations. You can do the math on that one, but it obviously bodes well for a much larger expansion.

Box Office: 'Catching Fire' and 'Frozen' Break Thanksgiving Records; 'Oldboy' Flops Hard

    1. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire- $74.5M/$296.5M
In what is generally a fairly soft holiday weekend, 'Catching Fire' set the box office alight with a whopping $74.5M, which grows to $110M if expanded to include Wednesday. That breaks the record previously held by Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, which hit the $82M mark in its second weekend twelve years ago. Worldwide the film has amassed $573M in a mere 10 days.
    2. Frozen- $66.7M/$93.M
As Catching Fire burns, Frozen is putting all of Disney's box office records on ice with a $93M five-day haul that ranks it as the studio's highest-grossing debut of all-time. The total more than trumps the $68M total for Tangled, which opened on the same weekend a couple of years ago and went on to earn more than $600M worldwide. The interesting thing to note is that Disney had planned for Tangled to be their final "princess" movie until it performed so well, and now they're on the verge of Frozen possibly becoming their top-grossing animated movie ever.
    3. Thor: The Dark World- $15.4M/$186.7M
    4. The Best Man Holiday- $8.4M/$63.4M
    5. Homefront- $6.97M/$9.7M
Not even Jason Statham could best the might of this week's top two flicks, as Homefront opened to a dismal $9.7M, which admittedly is average for his solo films of late.
    6. Delivery Man- $6.93M/$19.4M
    7. The Book Thief- $4.8M/$7.8M
    8. Black Nativity- $3.8M/$5M
Not even an obvious holiday family musical like Black Nativity, with an absolutely glowing cast, had any room to manuever this week. The Kasi Lemmons' adaptation of Langston Hughes' play earned $5M over the five days, but it may stick around for awhile as we inch closer to Christmas.
    9. Philomena- $3.7M/$4.7M
Bumping up more than 800 theaters and riding Oscar buzz for star Judi Dench, the real-life dramedy Philomena should stick around for the long haul as awards season rolls along.
    10. 12 Years A Slave- $3M/$33.1M

It's hard to figure out exactly what FilmDistrict was thinking in their treatment of Spike Lee's Oldboy. After a brilliant, extremely creative art campaign emphasizing the film's more twisted aspects, they go and dump it in only 583 theaters with little in the way of TV promotion. The results are to be expected, $1.25M earned over the five-day holiday, making it unlikely the $30M feature will recoup its budget.

New Clip from 'Agents of SHIELD' Crossover with 'Thor: The Dark World'

After dropping numerous references to Marvel's flicks, Agents of SHIELD is will properly crossover with Thor: The Dark World in this week's episode. Well, "crossover" in the sense that Agent Coulson and his Scooby gang will be cleaning up the mess left after the #1 box office smash, although there won't be any Chris Hemsworth or Tom Hiddleston sightings. The first clip from tomorrow night's episode, titled 'The Well', has been released and it opens with some clever voice-over by Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge, quickly becoming my favorite on the show), followed later by two mysterious backpackers making a powerful discover in the forests. This episode seems to have a lot in common with the Marvel One-Shot, Item 47, so we'll see if there are any other ties to keep an eye out for.

"In the aftermath of the events chronicled in the feature film Marvel's "Thor: The Dark World," Coulson and the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. pick up the pieces--one of which threatens to destroy a member of the team."

Box Office: 'Thor: The Dark World' Hammers Its Way to #1

    1. Thor: The Dark World- $86.1M
There's a reason why other studios don't put other films opposite of Marvel Studios' superhero projects, and its because of opening weekends like this. Thor: The Dark World somewhat surprisingly crushed the box office to the tune of $86.1M, the fourth highest of the year behind Iron Man 3, Man of Steel, and Fast & Furious 6. It's also a significant jump over the $65M the first film made a couple of years ago. This was set up somewhat by last week's foreign haul of $109M, and worldwide the film has already tallied $327M. So that $170M production budget? A thing of the past. That bump all of Marvel's films seem to be getting after The Avengers? Still very much intact.
    2. Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa- $11.3M/$78.7M
    3. Free Birds- $11.18M/$30.1M
    4. Last Vegas- $11.11M/$33.5M
    5. Ender's Game- $10.2M/$44M
    6. Gravity- $8.4M/$231.1M
    7. 12 Years A Slave- $6.6M/$17.3M
    8. Captain Phillips- $5.8M/$90.9M
    9. About Time- $5.1M/$6.6M
    10. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2- $2.8M/$109.9M

Review: 'Thor: The Dark World' Starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, and Natalie Portman

At one point in Marvel's superhero sequel Thor: The Dark World, the devious Loki (Tom Hiddleston) exclaims confidently "If it was easy, everybody would do it!" That sentiment could describe Marvel's genius construction of their cinematic universe, a perennial cash cow that only seems to be getting more lucrative by the film, especially in the wake of the $1.5B-grossing The Avengers. While an assemblage of Earth's Mightiest Heroes was always a shoe-in to be a hit, the solo films have been more of a challenge, and none more so than Thor. And while that first movie did well despite its many problems, the sequel surpasses Iron Man 3 in terms of scope and focus to be one of the most entertaining superhero movies yet.

The mandate is pretty clear for this one from the beginning: Do everything bigger!! The sheer spectacle of Thor: The Dark World stands on par with The Avengers, and while nobody is going to say the film is better, it's impressive the number of elements director Alan Taylor is able to juggle successfully. A Lord of the Rings-style flashback, complete with dark elves that look like orcs battling Asgardians with swords and axes, introduces us to the villain Malekith (Christopher Eccleston). There's a bit of mumbo jumbo about the alignment of the Nine Realms and Malekith's desire to plunge the universe into eternal darkness using a powerful destructive force known as the Aether. Defeated, Malekith is forced into slumber and the Aether hidden away where it can never be found, until of course it is found years later quite accidentally by Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) while searching for Thor (Chris Hemsworth), who has been missing for months.

So where exactly does one hide a blond chiseled slab of godly beefcake, anyway? Well, you don't, and in the wake of the attack on New York City in The Avengers, Thor is seen delivering Loki to an Asgardian prison where he'll sit for the rest of eternity. But even when behind mystical prison walls Loki is good at getting under one's skin and that includes his mother Frigga (Rene Russo), who gets a greatly expanded role this time as the mediator between her two sons. As Thor gets on with the business of protecting Asgard and the Nine Realms, while also catching the eye of his warrior colleague Sif (Jaime Alexander), he's still torn by his love for Jane. Returning to Earth to find her, he's greeted by a couple of nice slaps to the mug, but after discovering she's been bonded to the Aether it's off to Asgard they go. Before she can finish awkwardly meeting Thor's parents, Malekith is awoken and stages a devastating attack that leaves Thor, Loki, and the almighty Odin (Anthony Hopkins) struck to their core.

And what a battle it is. Really, Malekith's attack on Asgard is the film's biggest set piece, and it looks absolutely incredible. It benefits by the impressive direction by Taylor, the Game of Thrones vet giving Asgard a more grounded, recognizable look than the fake, comic book look favored by previous director, Kenneth Branagh. This Asgard actually looks like a place people could inhabit, which fits with Marvel's clear mandate to make Thor fit into a realistic world. Since the bulk of the action takes place away from Earth this time, it also affords the chance to really dig into the Shakespearean drama that is Thor's family line. Bad blood continues to boil between Thor and Loki, with Hemsworth and Hiddleston both playing their parts extremely well. Let's face it, Hiddleston has been the rock star of the entire Marvel Universe up to this point, and every time he's on screen the film has a dangerous vibe that is undeniably fun. We're presented different shades to Loki's scorned child selfishness that were missing in the first film, and mark him as more than someone out for vengeance. Hemsworth too has really grown into a solid actor, as we saw recently in Ron Howard's Rush, and this version of Thor is one who is feeling the weight of responsibility and family obligation wear him down. The family dynamics of the Thor movies are unlike anything else Marvel's movies can offer and they are consistently fascinating.

Less interesting is pretty much everything that has to do with Jane Foster and her irritating pal, Darcy (Kat Dennings), who had been a scene-stealer the last time around. Less is more with a snarky character like Darcy, and she's around so much that eventually one starts to wish Malekith would pay her a personal visit. For what it's worth, Portman gives her all imbuing Jane Foster with a measure of strength, but she's still basically a damsel in distress waiting to happen. She gets a few moments to flash her intellect alongside the returning Dr. Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard), but any explanation of the overly-complicated plot just sounds like gobbledygook ripped from an episode of Doctor Who. Idris Elba gets a little more to work with as the fierce protector Heimdall, including a brief but thrilling action sequence that was probably designed just for his fans. One problem that continues to trouble Marvel films are their lackluster villains, and Malekith is another in a long line of them that don't feel all that important.

Effortlessly combining sci-fi, supernatural, and fantasy elements, anything can and often does happen in Thor: The Dark World, and that unpredictability is a big part of why Marvel has struck gold (or is it lightning?) one more time.

'Agents of SHIELD' to Crossover with 'Thor: The Dark World'

It still happens every time November sweeps rolls around, but remember how this time of year you can always count on shows like Friends and Will & Grace flooding each episode with as many celebrity cameos as possible? Well, the Marvel version of that is teasing a connection between Agents of SHIELD and one of their major feature films, in this case Thor: The Dark World. Marvel has announced that the November 19th episode titled 'The Well' will crossover with the Thor sequel, which opens on November 8th. But fans who are now rejoicing over that news might want to slow their roll.

First of all, nobody from the film will actually be in the episode, so don't expect to see Chris Hemsworth or Tom Hiddleston to pop up anywhere. And the plot description doesn't read like there will be any direct connections either....

In the aftermath of the events chronicled in the feature film Marvel's "Thor: The Dark World," Coulson and the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. pick up the pieces--one of which threatens to destroy a member of the team.

On the extremely positive side, the episode will be directed by Jonathan Frankes, who Star Trek: The Next Generation fans will know as Commander William Riker. It'd be cool if he could guest star, also, but instead we'll get Peter MacNicol as Professor Elliot Randolph, Michael Graziadei as Jakob Nystrom, Erin Way as Petra Larsen, Toby Wilson as Neils, Alex Neustaedter as Maynard and Sylvia Brindis as Elena.

Be sure to keep an eye out for +Julian Lytle's weekly recap of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD. Here's a teaser for the upcoming episode, "FZZT".

Jaime Alexander Promises Third 'Thor' Film; Confirms 'Batman vs. Superman' Talks

Marvel's Thor: The Dark World opens in just under a week, and already analysts are projecting it to be do significantly better than the first film. Not surprising given the $1B+ haul of The Avengers and Iron Man 3, and we can probably expect to see bigger numbers for all Marvel films for awhile longer. The cast has been out and about making the press rounds (we should have an interview up in just a few days), and Jaimie Alexander, who promises to see an expanded role as Sif in the film, revealed some information that will have the rumor mill buzzing.

Alexander took part in Stan Lee's Comickaze Expo as part of the Movie Talk panel, where she basically confirmed what we already knew; there WILL be a third Thor movie. No shocker there. The bigger question is whether or not it will be the final Thor film.

Those who have seen Alexander as Sif know she's a definite bad ass, and it's fueled a lot of fan hopes that Warner Bros. would consider her for a future Wonder Woman movie.  She's definitely got the look and physicality for it, and when a recent casting sheet for Batman vs. Superman was calling for a tall, athletic, physically fit actress in her late 20s for a mystery role, it read like the search for Wonder Woman was on. The description basically describes Alexander to a tee.

While she didn't directly address playing Wonder Woman, Alexander revealed that she has had "conversations" with both Marvel and Warner Bros. about future superhero films, and that she "knows thing" about the Batman vs. Superman storyline. While we know that it's very loosely based on The Dark Knight Returns, the exact details would only be known to those who are in the film or are trying out for a major role.

Forbes caught up with her for a follow-up, and she was a little more measured in her words. Here's how they captured it...

Alexander laughed slyly, saying, “I would love for DC to put Wonder Woman in one of their upcoming flicks, either in her own movie or Batman vs. Superman, or just something even to introduce her.” Getting more to the point regarding her earlier comments, Alexander explained carefully, “Being in the comic book world, we know a lot of the same people at DC and Marvel, so we hear a lot of things, but it’s all speculation right now. But I would absolutely love that [Wonder Woman appearing in one of the upcoming films]. Thankfully and gratefully, I’m appreciative to the people who ask my opinion of the character, and that’s been pretty amazing.”

Alexander's a die hard comic book fan and she's spoken in the past about what her version of a Wonder Woman would look like. She told Screen Crush earlier this year....

Alexander: “If you’re going to make Wonder Woman, make it like The Bourne Supremacy. You know, let’s do something awesome like that. Alias was a fantastic show. Why can’t we do that? Why does she have to be in hot pants and spandex and all this stuff? And yeah, I get it, it’s visually stunning for…half of people. But at least make her grow a pair. All she does is eat ice cream while she’s crying over a boy. I know it never aired but that’s what the script said.”

So we'll see what happens, but it definitely looks like Alexander is a star on the rise. With Joss Whedon and Kevin Feige talking often about their desire for more female superhero movies, could we perhaps see a Sif spinoff or Marvel One-Shot? And if there's any doubt that Alexander doesn't have the look to play Wonder Woman for Warner Bros., just check out this fanmade photo, which the actress herself tweeted her approval of!

Check Out 'Thor 2' in 3D for 5-Minute Preview of 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier'

We already know there isn't a studio that cross-promotes better than Marvel and Disney, and it looks like they've found a way to make sure when audiences buy their tickets for Thor: The Dark World next week, they'll be paying a bit extra.

Fandango has learned 3D screenings of the Thor sequel will come with more than the usual post-credits sequence. A five-minute sneak preview of next year's Captain America: The Winter Soldier will also accompany the film, but exactly what footage will be shown is anybody's guess. If I were a betting man (and I am) I'd say it will be the elevator sequence, glimpsed in the recent trailer, in which Cap is betrayed by his own men and a close-quarters battle ensues. The scene played at Comic-Con and got the crowd hyped more than anything, so it's a pretty solid choice and the run time is just about perfect.

So there ya go. Thor: The Dark World opens in 3D on November 8th.

Bad Dates and Space Ships in Two 'Thor: The Dark World' Clips

Marvel has always been pretty good at injecting humor into their superhero movies, at least when it comes to Iron Man and The Avengers. But it's been sort of lacking in the other films, and for something like Thor: The Dark World, which deals with Norse gods, dark elves, and apparently space ships, it's silly enough that the jokes should write themselves. And now we've got two clips that show the film will have a decent sense of humor about it.

The first clip gives us our first footage of Chris O'Dowd's cameo appearance as a date for Natalie Portman's character, Jane Foster. There was some speculation he would be playing a version of Thor's human host Donald Blake, but that's not the case and he appears to just be a guy who sees his one shot at scoring with Foster ruined by her best friend, Darcy.

The second clip has more of a Star Wars feel as Thor and Loki make a daring escape aboard a space ship while their pursuers attempt to shoot them down. Of course, Loki can't help but be a backseat driver the whole time and it's a wonder Thor doesn't just shoot him out the air lock.

Starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Christopher Eccleston, Idris Elba, Jaimie Alexander, Stellan Skarsgard, Anthony Hopkins, and Kat Dennings, Thor: The Dark World opens November 8th.

Thor gets Slapped Around in New 'Thor: The Dark World' Clip

As far as excuses for standing up your girlfriend go, defending the world form alien invasion and being trapped in a mystical realm are pretty darn good. However they don't stop Thor from getting slapped across his godly grill by Jane Foster in the latest clip from Thor: The Dark World. Set some time after The Avengers, the scene features the lovers' reunion and Jane's obvious anger over being left behind. There's a pretty good chance Thor will take harder blows later in the film, but few will be quite as personal.

Starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba, Christophr Eccleston, and Jaime Alexander, Thor: The Dark World opens on November 8th.

Thor Takes the Battlefield in New 'Thor: The Dark World' Clip

The addition of Game of Thrones director Alan Taylor seems to have emboldened Marvel to go bigger with Thor: The Dark World. Kenneth Branagh's film featured plenty of action, but it never hit the battlefield in as grand a scale as Taylor's sequel appears to, at least according to this latest clip. Following on yesterday's footage centering on villain Malekith the Accursed, the latest has Thor fighting alongside Sif (Jaime Alexander) and the Warriors Three. It's a scene that resembles Game of Thrones in more ways than one, except for the flying hammer, of course.

Starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Christopher Eccleston, Natalie Portman, and Idris Elba, Thor: The Dark World opens November 8th.

First Look at Chris O'Dowd in 'Thor: The Dark World'

Considering the fervor that erupts around all of Marvel's casting decisions, it's kind of interesting that Chris O'Dowd's cameo in Thor: The Dark World has largely been ignored. Or at the very least it's already been forgotten. It was a few months ago that O'Dowd tweeted he'd filmed a brief date scene in the Marvel sequel, and now Empire has provided our first look at it.

The image shows O'Dowd opposite Natalie Portman as Jane Foster and Kat Dennings as her best friend. Thor and Foster appear to be on the outs in this film, at least initially, so we could be looking at her agreeing to meet her ex-boyfriend, Donald Blake, with Dennings' character there as support. It's all just speculation but expect O'Dowd to be funny and undeniably likable for however long he's on screen.

And in case this isn't enough Thor hype for you, USA Today has unveiled a new poster done up in Lego style, all for the release of the Lego: Marvel Super Heroes game that I'll be indulging in on October 22nd. Thor: The Dark World hits theaters on November 8th.

New Posters for 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire', 'Thor: The Dark World', 'Filth', and 'Ride Along'

We haven't done a poster update lately, so let's make up for lost time. Lionsgate has released a new poster for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire which comes with the tagline "Remember who the enemy is". In this case the enemy is the backlash heaped upon YA adaptations of late, and it's unclear if the success of the first film will be enough to keep it from a similarly poor box office fate. Eh, probably not with Jennifer Lawrence back as Katniss Everdeen, thrust back into the life-or-death struggle by President Snow (Donald Sutherland) as payback for her victory last time around. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opens November 22nd in IMAX.

Judging by the trailers we can expect to see Idris Elba have a bit more to do as Heimdall in Thor: The Dark World than just guarding the Rainbow Bridge. He's too good of an actor to be relegated too far into the background. But guard that bridge is exactly what he's up to in this latest one-sheet, joined by another that gives us a solid look at Christopher Eccleston as the dark elf Malekith the Accursed. To me, Malekith seems like a stop-gap villain and one that doesn't push Thor's story forward, so I'm guessing somebody bigger is actually pulling the strings. Is it Thanos? Or does Loki's inevitable treachery run deeper than we know at this point? I'm betting on the latter. We'll find out when Thor: The Dark World arrives November 8th.

"Sordid" and "sleazy". It takes a very special sort of film to see that as high praise, and Filth is definitely one of those. Perhaps that's why distributors haven't climbed aboard to bring it to the U.S. yet? Hopefully it has nothing to do with James McAvoy hardly being a bankable star over here (Trance did okay business), even though the film is based on a book by Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh. Isn't that enough? Apparently not. Anyway, McAvoy plays an offensive, drug-addled, sex-obsessed cop investigating a murder. Or at least he's supposed to be if it weren't for all of his vices getting in the way.

Ice Cube and Kevin Hart side-by-side in a cop comedy? Sign me up. The trailer for Ride Along was as hilarious as a pairing of these two should be, but the first poster could use a little bit of work. Hart plays a security guard who wants to marry Ice Cube's sister, and agrees to go on a ride along with the hard-ass cop to prove his worth. Formulaic? Absolutely, but as a buddy comedy like The Heat proved earlier this year; sometimes the old tricks work best.

Joss Whedon Helped Rewrite Scenes in 'Thor: The Dark World'

Marvel already has Joss Whedon running around all over the place trying to maintain the cohesiveness of their superhero universe. Aside from prepping The Avengers: Age of Ultron, he also wrote and directed the pilot to next week's Agents of SHIELD, and serves as consultant to all of the studio's projects. Part of that job includes swooping in to save the day when a director needs his help on a film, and it appears that's exactly what he had to do with Thor: The Dark World.

While talking to SFX, director Alan Taylor revealed that he had a handful of troublesome scenes that he just couldn't get a handle on, and so Whedon was flown to London to give them a shot. Sounds like it worked out pretty well, at least from Taylor's perspective....

Taylor: “Joss came in to save our lives a couple of times,” laughs the director. “We had a major scene that was not working on the page at all in London, and he basically got airlifted in, like a SWAT team or something. He came down, rewrote the scene, and before he got back to his plane I sort of grabbed him and said, ‘And this scene and this scene?’ And he rewrote two other scenes that I thought had problems. Then finally we let go of him, he took off again, and we shot the scenes; and they were just much better and much lighter on their feet. Much more fun, much more surprising than what we had been trying to do. I can relate to guys who come out of the TV world, since that’s where I come from. And being able to land and work and solve a problem quickly… I really was grateful.”

Reshoots had been taking place to add in more of Tom Hiddleston's Loki, because there can never be too much of a great thing, but it's unclear if Whedon's involvement had anything to do with it. I guess we'll know if the phrase "mewling quim" turns up.  This isn't the first time Whedon has helped out on another Marvel project, as he pitched in on the Captain America: The First Avenger script.

Thor: The Dark World opens November 8th.

Thor and Loki Featured In Two 'Thor: The Dark World' Character Posters

These images of a thunderous Thor and scheming Loki were part of a recent Empire magazine cover spread, but now Marvel has released them as new character posters. Thor: The Dark World picks up where The Avengers left off and has Thor (Chris Hemsworth) forced to team up with his conniving brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) to defend Asgard from the threat of dark elf Malekith. As we've seen from the trailers, Thor will be pulled in many different directions at once. Not only must he watch for the inevitable knife in the back from Loki, but his lover Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) is also in harm's way.

Thor is probably my least favorite Avenger ever, he's simply not interesting to me. But I found the first film entertaining, and the sequel looks amazing thanks to Game of Thrones director Alan Taylor coming aboard. I'm a little sad this may be the last we see of Loki for awhile, but hopefully he goes out with the bang he deserves.

Thor: The Dark World opens on November 8th.
