Sony Kills Rumors of Spider-Man Going to Marvel

Well, that didn't take long. Yesterday the comic book movie community exploded when yet another rumor surfaced that Marvel had struck a deal with Sony to bring in Spider-Man in time for 2018's Avengers: Infinity War.. It's a story that many have been following closely for months, especially when reports of the negotiations surfaced during the Sony leak scandal, but it all appears to have been for naught.

According to Comic Book Resources, who reached out to a source within Sony, there is "no validity whatsoever" to the rumors. They went on to call it an "old rumor" and basically put to bed any hope that this deal was even close to happening. Of course, it could all be smoke and mirrors as a deal like this would have to be extremely sensitive for both parties, but this kind of denial is about as clear as it gets.

As has been discussed numerous times on this site, the desires of the Internet community don't always make great business sense. Sony would have been giving up a lot in future profits, not to mention creative control, while Marvel would have been made to look like an even bigger powerhouse than they already are. The logistics of it simply don't work, and while many of us will continue to hope and pray that something gets done to bring all of Marvel's superheroes into the same universe, now does not appear to be the time for it to happen.

Spider-Man Rumored to Join Marvel with 2018's 'Avengers: Infinity War'

Want to know how to get a comics fanboy REALLY excited, short of showing them photos of Wonder Woman and Supergirl mudwrestling? Get them talking about the prospect of Spider-Man leaving Sony and heading back to Marvel. Rumors that the two sides were trying to come to some sort of deal have been circulating for months, and recently during the Sony leak we learned those talks had fallen through. But now a new rumor has surfaced at Latino Review which claims the webslinger will be hanging out with the Avengers very soon.

Their story says Marvel and Sony have come to a deal that would bring Spider-Man into the Marvel fold in time for Avengers: Infinity War part 1 in 2018. Earlier the report had been that Marvel really wanted him for Captain America: Civil War, which would make sense given the character's central role in the comics storyline, but that doesn't appear to be happening. The site goes pretty in-depth on what will be happening and it involves a major shift in the Avengers roster, clearing room for Spidey to join up. Here's what the say...

"Avengers: Age of Ultron introduces a new group of Avengers lead by Captain America. Still think Hulk’s gonna be in space.

Captain America: Civil War exposes that Bucky killed Howard Stark, Iron Man and Captain America fight, Tony Stark is discouraged (I’m vague on how he ends up at the moment), Black Panther is introduced, Crossbones kills Steve Rogers at the end of the film, giving us a nice big cliffhanger from Marvel Studios’ two most profitable characters (Iron Man and Captain America). Since I’m so vague on what happens to Iron Man, but I’m pretty sure he can’t be flitting in and out of other Phase 3 movies without reducing the impact of his future return, let’s just say he’ll also be in space."

So no Captain America, no Thor, but apparently Spider-Man will be part of the Avengers roster come Infinity War, along with many of the other new heroes like Doctor Strange, Quicksilver, and Scarlet Witch.

Pretty crazy, right? But let's keep in mind this is all a rumor for now. Chances are if this happens it spells the end of Andrew Garfield as Spidey and a new actor would be found to replace him. Garfield did a good job in the role but was let down by Sony's sloppy handily of the franchise. It also wastes a pair of great performances by Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy.

So we'll see if this comes to pass, but it would be a big step in giving Marvel fans everything they've always wanted.

Sony/Marvel Spider-Man Deal would be a Reboot; Russo Bros. Directing 'Avengers: Infinity War'

After getting off to a roaring start Sony has royally botched The Amazing Spider-Man franchise, that much is no longer in dispute. And as we've seen them scramble to formulate some kind of plan, rumors have been growing they may be willing to share the character's rights with Marvel, thus allowing him into the same universe as the Avengers. A leaked email revealed just days ago confirmed those talks had taken place, and while it seemed like a dead idea a new story suggests it could still happen.

According to Latino Review, Sony's parent company has noticed just how badly the Spider-Man movies have done in relation to other comic book franchises and are open to the deal with Marvel. Their hope is to negotiate some kind of 60/40 split that would see Sony retaining creative control, but what are the chances Marvel would run with something like that? Probably slim. If it did happen, though, it would be without Andrew Garfield, or anything relating to Marc Webb or Sam Raimi's films. It would be a completely new franchise, one that would skip out on the origin story we've seen depicted twice in only a few years. Smart move, there.

Of course, none of this may happen. For now Sony is pushing ahead with their Spider-Man plans, such as they are. That includes a Venom movie, a Sinister Six film, a female-led Spidey film, and an animated comedy series with Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

Meanwhile, the Sony hack continues to be an information goldmine. A Brazilian website dug through the leaked emails and discovered that Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors the Russo Brothers were approached to be Spider-Man producers. That offer may still stand, but the duo revealed to Sony chief Amy Pascal they would be directing Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War, which would confirm a rumor that's been making the rounds.  Keep in mind that due to all of this hacking stuff there are likely to be some big changes at Sony, so who knows how much any of this stuff holds up in the long run.

Sony Hack Reveals Talks with Marvel Over Spider-Man; Animated Spidey Comedy in the Works

The hack currently exposing all of Sony's deepest, darkest secrets hasn't abated in the least, and some important stuff is getting put out there for everyone to see. No, not crap like the employees thinking Adam Sandler movies are terrible (they are), but deals that very nearly happened. The latest leak is one that's bound to drive Marvel and Spider-Man fans up a wall.

A few weeks ago a rumor surfaced that Sony and Marvel were having talks to possibly share the Spider-Man rights, so the character could appear alongside The Avengers during the Civil War storyline. Turns out those rumors were true. The WSJ dug into the most recent leaked emails and made the discovery, revealing execs were discussing a scenario in which Marvel would produce a trilogy of Spider-Man movies that Sony would retain creative control and distribution over. Marvel was into the idea, too, but the discussions eventually broke down. What it doesn't tell us if Marvel would have recast Spider-Man, but I'm guessing they would have.

That means Sony is going to push full steam ahead on their upcoming Spidery slate, which includes Venom, Sinister Six, a female-led spinoff, and apparently an animated Spider-Man comedy from 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller. That information was also part of the leak but there doesn't seem to be much in the way of details. Either way, the combination of Lord, Miller, and Spider-Man sounds pretty awesome.

So shed a tear, True Believers, at what might have been. We were so close to having Spider-Man and The Avengers playing for the same team.

Marvel Holding "Mystery" Event Tomorrow with Potentially Huge Announcement

There's a lot going on at Marvel's "House of Ideas" right now, and some are speculating it has to do with three recent developments. One is Warner Bros. reveal of their massive slate of DC Comics movies, lasting all the way through 2020 and including Justice League, Suicide Squad, and a bunch of solo films. Another is the leaking of the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer, which forced them to put out an official version a week early rather than during tomorrow night's episode of Agents of SHIELD. The show will now feature some additional footage, but clearly Marvel isn't happy about that. And finally, the early release of their Civil War plans regarding Captain America 3.

Tomorrow, Marvel is going to be holding a special press event in LA, and some are expecting some kind of major announcement. Fans have also been invited which seems to indicate this won't just be about business, but something they hope will get the Internet buzzing. Chances are it won't be more footage from the Avengers 2 trailer, because that would be redundant. But what if Marvel is going to pull a WB and announce their entire run of upcoming movies? Could they finally reveal who will be their Doctor Strange? This would make sense if Marvel wants to start ensuring they are in control of when information is revealed, and not those in the film press. This could be the start of a new policy going forward.

Other options could be Marvel finally revealing their plans to do a female-led superhero film. Maybe a Black Panther film is on the horizon, which would be timely given the recent Avengers: Age of Ultron rumors. Or what if Marvel and Sony have finally struck that deal to share the Spider-Man rights? It's definitely something big, and we've still got all day to speculate. What do you think Marvel's announcement will be?

A Look at Marvel's Past, Present, and Future in New Video

So while Marvel's presentation at Comic-Con was at least a tiny bit disappointing, one of the highlights was how they kicked off the show. No, we didn't get Tom Hiddleston showing up as Loki or anything like that, or James Spader coming out as Ultron like some thought, but we were treated to this rather awesome video covering the entirety of Marvel's Phase 1 and Phase 2 films, all the way up to Guardians of the Galaxy.

You can now check out that entire video for yourself, but be warned that it could spoil a little bit from Guardians of the Galaxy which is in theaters now.

Comic-Con: Marvel Announces Yet Another Film for 2018

Well, if ever there was a time for Marvel to make a splash, Comic-Con week is it. Just a few days ago they revealed five new release dates for mystery titles that we hope will be announced during their Hall H panel this weekend. But because this is Marvel and they do everything bigger than their "Distinguished Competition", they have suddenly revealed one more.

A third Marvel movie will be hitting theaters in 2018, opening on May 4th, and your guess is as good as mine what it could be. It's clear that Kevin Feige and the big wigs at Disney are playing around with their usual pattern of two movies per year because now they have three set to release in 2017 and 2018. Here is their updated slate...

August 1, 2014 — “Guardians of the Galaxy”
May 1, 2015 — “The Avengers: Age of Ultron”
July 17, 2015 — “Ant-Man”
May 6, 2016 — “Captain America 3″
July 8, 2016 — Unconfirmed
May 5, 2017 — Unconfirmed
July 27, 2017 — Unconfirmed
November 3, 2017 — Unconfirmed
May 4, 2018 — Unconfirmed
July 6, 2018 — Unconfirmed
November 2, 2018 — Unconfirmed
May 3, 2019 — Unconfirmed

So that's now eight movies we have no clue about, although there are some logical guesses to be made. Doctor Strange will probably take that July 8th 2016 slot, and there has to a spot for third Avengers and Thor movies. A Guardians of the Galaxy sequel could be on the cards, but everything else is potentially something brand new. Black Panther? Inhumans? The possibilities are endless.

Is there that much of an appetite for this many movies, though? Or is Marvel pressing ahead on too much too fast? I think those questions may get answered with Guardians of the Galaxy, a film with no recognizable heroes even amongst comic book fans. If that does as well as some think, Marvel could be doing the right thing by pressing ahead harder.

'The Middle' Actress Eden Sher Has Met with Marvel About Something....Possibly Nothing

Guaranteed that Google searches for 'Eden Sher' just went up about 200%. The 22-year-old actress currently stars on ABC's sitcom, The Middle, but mostly she's still a talent many are unfamiliar with. That could be about to change, though, as Sher recently tweeted that she's taken a meeting with Marvel for an undisclosed role.

And Marvel aren't being shy about it, tweeting an image of her in the "House of Ideas" where she went to supposedly pick up comics and talk about The Middle's season finale. Yeah, right....

The Internet has been going crazy with rumors she's being eyed for the Ms. Marvel role in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Sher added fuel to the fire by tweeting back-and-forth with the comic's editor, Sana Amanat.

@MiniB622 literally mad that walking is keeping me from starting Ms. Marvel rn. TYVM 4 the issues. Promise next time I see you I won't cry.
She seems a bit young to play Carol Danvers, and it's doubtful Marvel would want her to play the current Muslim version of the character, Kamala Khan. There's always the possibility they want her for one of their upcoming Netflix series, possibly as Jessica Jones, but that seems doubtful given her commitments on The Middle. Maybe she's being eyed for Agent Carter? Or for a role in an upcoming film we don't know about yet?  It's unlikely she spent three hours there just to pick up comics and chat with a few editors, but until we know more all we can do is speculate. It might turn out to be nothing.

Disney and Marvel's Animated 'Big Hero 6' Reveals First Images

Captain America and the Guardians of the Galaxy aren't the only Marvel heroes on the big screen this year. In the fall Disney Animation will release Big Hero 6, an obscure team that was very loosely affiliated with the X-men in their earliest appearance (the former X-man Sunfire was on the team back then), but have no such ties in this movie. The trailer arrives this Thursday but for now we have the first official images featuring the team's teen leader, Hiro Hamada.

Maya Rudolph, TJ Miller, and Jamie Chung lend their voices to the film, although surprisingly nobody has been found to voice Hiro yet. Hiro is a teen robotics prodigy in the futuristic city of San Fransokyo, who along with his robot pal, Baymax, join a reluctant team of crime fighters consisting of Honey Lemon, Go-Go Tomago, Wasabi-No-Ginger, and Fred aka Fredzilla. The animation is similar to what Disney has done with their Planes movies, and should be appealing for kids and fans of the Marvel comic, which used more of an anime-style approach.

Big Hero 6 opens November 7th.

Zac Efron Rumored for an Unspecified Marvel Role

With Disney owning pretty much every major franchise there's always another big role right around the corner. The rumors of Zac Efron being a part of Star Wars: Episode VII, some of which were pushed by the actor himself, didn't really work out. But now there's a chance he could end up in another major Disney project.

A story over at Latino Review says Efron is up for an unspecified Marvel role, with a script already in his possession. So what is it? Nobody knows, but Disney supposedly saw how successful Neighbors was at the box office and figured it was time to bring their High School Musical star back into the fold.  It's possible he's up for a part in one of the Netflix series coming up, but the likelihood he'd want to do TV now is slim. Efron as Daredevil, maybe? Let's hope not.

Anyway, keep the source in mind and and wait until something concrete comes down. It may turn out this was all a bunch of smoke and no fire.

Disney and Governor Cuomo Strike Major Deal Bringing Marvel's Netflix Shows to NYC

Unlike DC Comics which use fictional places such as Gotham City and Metropolis as locations for their stories, Marvel sets the bulk of their action smack dab in the heart of New York City. So it makes sense that they'd want to set their upcoming Netflix series' there, and now they've struck a major deal with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to make that happen.

Disney, Marvel, and Cuomo have announced that all of Marvel's upcoming Netflix shows featuring Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Daredevil will filmed in New York City as part of a major $4M tax incentive. The Wrap adds that these will be 60 one-hour episodes, 13 for each individual character, followed by a four-to-eight episode miniseries titled The Defenders. Drew Goddard's Daredevil will be the first to take advantage of this deal with filming to being this summer. That means we should be learning soon who will be playing the "Man without Fear".

Daredevil will be followed by Melissa Rosenberg's long-developing Jessica Jones series, leading into Luke Cage and a solo series for his kung-fu partner, Iron Fist. We're even starting to get some promotional art thanks Marvel's Agent M, who released the above image on Tumblr.

Marvel's 'Jessica Jones' Netflix Series Lands 'Twilight' Writer Melissa Rosenberg

Joss Whedon's been talking about it for a few months, but Marvel has been trying to develop new female-centric projects for years. The most prominent of those was AKA Jessica Jones, which was to be Marvel's first drama series at ABC, based around the popular superhero character created by Brian Michael Bendis. The series never came together, but its architect screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg is about to pick up where she left off.

Deadline reports Rosenberg will pen the new adventures of Jessica Jones in one of Marvel's upcoming Netflix series. Rosenberg is best known for writing the Twilight franchise, and now she'll move on to a considerably more complicated heroine than Bella Swan. Jessica Jones first appeared in the pages of Alias (one of my favorite comics ever, by the way), and was a troubled former Avenger who gave up superheroics to become a private eye. She had an off/on relationship with Luke Cage, and a supervillain stalker in the form of the Purple Man. The series was cancelled after a couple of years but Jessica is still a prominent character, marrying Cage and keeping close ties to the Avengers.

Jessica Jones is one of a handful of new Marvel shows in the works, with others centered on Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. The 13-hour series' will lead up to a new miniseries titled The Defenders. Marvel is also planning a spinoff series based on Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter character from Captain America: The First Avenger.

Marvel Announces Live-Action Netflix Shows Featuring Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage & Iron Fist, and The Defenders

Marvel's domination over all forms of media is now complete. A couple of weeks ago a story emerged that Marvel Studios and Disney were shopping around a package of four TV series and a miniseries to cable and digital streaming networks. It didn't take long for them to find a buyer, either, as a deal has now been struck with Netlix to stream the Marvel Universe right into your home.

The ambitious plan has Marvel producing four 13-episodes series, and the most awesome thing about it is they involve characters we've been expecting to see on the big screen forever. The first series will center on the newly-acquired Daredevil. Next up is Jessica Jones, who in the Marvel comics is a former superhero-turned-detective. She's also married to Luke Cage aka Power Man, who is next up to get his own series, which will then be followed up by his pal, Iron Fist. All of this will culminate in an epic miniseries titled The Defenders.

It's a pretty shrewd move for Marvel, and as long as they find a way to make each series capable of standing on their own, there should be no risk of fans experiencing superhero fatigue. This also gives Marvel the chance to do go in some darker directions than they may have been able to on public television or in the movies. For instance, Jessica Jones' comic series Alias (one of the best written comics ever, IMHO) explored some of Marvel's nastiest corners and dug into the personal lives of heroes in ways that would potentially turn off general audiences looking for something less weighty. And let's be honest, we all just hope they turn out better than Agents of SHIELD, right?

So what do you think? Is this a good idea? Which show are you looking forward to most?

Marvel Expanding TV Presence with Four New Series and A Miniseries

Now that Marvel's Agents of SHIELD is a bonafide hit and has been picked up for a full season order (no surprise there), the studio has already begun looking for ways to expand their influence on the small screen. Recently we learned of plans of an Agent Carter spinoff, based on the popular Captain America: The First Avenger character, but that may be just the tip of the iceberg. A report from Deadline says Marvel are quietly shopping a package of 60 episodes, to include four dramatic series and one mini-series, to cable distributors and VOD services.

Specific details are being held at the highest levels of Marvel secrecy, but an initial order of 60 episodes is practically non-existent in this business, especially for VOD and cable. Amazon, WGN America, and Netflix are said to be the likely candidates to strike this sort of deal because it would give them basically a full slate of programming and make them an integral piece of the popular Marvel machine. It wouldn't be surprising if there was some level of crossover between the five series, as well.

So what Marvel properties do you think deserve their own TV series?

*UPDATE* 'Daredevil' film rights reverting back to Marvel

* UPDATE* Joe Carnahan has released the sizzle reel he presented to Fox for what he called his "Serpico-styled" take on Daredevil. The footage is a slick combination of grindhouse, kung fu, and blaxploitation, intercut with scenes from the Daredevil comic and the 2003 film starring Ben Affleck. I love it, but I can also see why Fox wouldn't want to go in such a retro direction. You can check out his pitch at the bottom of the story. *

Well, this isn't really coming as a shock, not after this summer's developments. Fox had been trying to get a relaunch of Daredevil off the ground in a hurry, due to the fact that they would lose the film rights to the character in October. David Slade had been set to direct it for awhile, but he dropped out, only to have Joe Carnahan emerge as as last second replacement. With Carnahan recently revealing that his take on the character had been rejected, it was up to Fox to try and either find a replacement or let the character go back to Marvel. Turns out it's going to be the latter.

We had heard this may be the direction Fox was leaning, anyway, especially after they denied a supposed plan that would have seen them trading a couple of characters back to Marvel in exchange for an extension. This makes Daredevil the third major character to revert back to Marvel's control, and the second since Disney bought the company in 2009. The others are The Punisher and Blade, neither of which have any films in development.

The obvious question now is what impact this will have on Marvel's plans going forward? They've pretty much laid out their plans for The Avengers 2, which will likely run all the way through 2015. But from there all bets are off. Daredevil doesn't fit naturally with the team dynamic, and in the comics only recently became a member. The 2003 film did well, but was considered a disappointment by many overall. Obviously, with the Marvel marketing machine behind him, it's not inconceivable to think Daredevil could be part of a successful reboot somewhere down the line. It just likely won't be any time soon. [Variety]

Has Joe Carnahan's 'Daredevil' plan been rejected by Fox?

Uh oh, it looks like we may be talking about Daredevil reverting back to the Marvel Universe, after all. That's certainly where things seemed to be headed, as the Man Without Fear's film rights were on the verge of expiring over at 20th Century Fox, with the studio scrambling to find someone to get a production up and running before then. With David Slade out, Joe Carnahan(The Grey) emerged as the frontunner, and in recent days we've seen him talking up the project a little bit on Twitter...

@manwithoutfear DD fans would be very pleased if they saw the things I've seen of late. Very, VERY pleased...

But now it appears the tables have turned. Carnahan again took to tweeting the film's progress, and his mood certainly changed.....

Joe Carnahan @carnojoe Think my idea for a certain retro, red-suited, Serpico-styled superhero went up in smoke today kids.

The most recent update said that Fox may be willing to let the character go, rather than getting involved in some complicated horsetrading with Marvel to earn an extension. Fox's rights lapse on October 10th, and even if Carnahan or some other director were to get the job today, it would be a tough turnaround in that short a period of time. It's always possible Fox has another director in mind, but it's doubtful. Carnahan would have made for a perfect fit for the character, and if they were truly serious about holding on to Daredevil, they'd probably be amenable to any halfway decent idea that crosses their desks.

So does this mean we could see Daredevil as part of The Avengers in the future? Probably not right away, as Marvel also has regained the rights to popular heroes, The Punisher and Blade, and up to this point they haven't done anything with them.

Fox willing to let 'Daredevil' go back to Marvel?

Could we be seeing Daredevil back under the Marvel umbrella, after all? A couple of months ago we learned that 20th Century Fox was on the verge of losing the rights to the blind lawyer superhero if they couldn't get a film rolling soon enough. With David Slade out, Joe Carnahan's name emerged yesterday as a possibility to direct, but with the rights set to lapse on October 10th, it appeared that Fox was willing to send Marvel/Disney the use of Galactus and the Silver Surfer in order to get an extension. Now Deadline is hearing those reports are untrue. So what's the real deal?

The site says the story is being "strenuously denied" by sources, and that the latest news has Fox being cool on the idea of doing a Daredevil reboot, maybe even to the point of letting the character revert back to Marvel. It never really made much sense for Fox to give up on two such crucial characters for the sake of saving Daredevil, especially with the studio putting all their chips on a Fantastic Four reboot with Josh Trank(Chronicle) at the helm. But it sounded as if Marvel had them by the balls, and it seemed logical their desire to gain the use of two universal threats like Galactus and Silver Surfer during a time when their Phase 2 plans involve the space-faring Guardians of the Galaxy and Thanos.

So where does that leave things for now? Fox still has until October to get a Daredevil film into gear, meaning they'd need to hit the ground running like right now. Or they could possibly go into a co-financing deal with Marvel, which is apparently being discussed. I can't figure out why Marvel would want to go along with that, though. It would be more beneficial to them having the character back in the fold, because he represents a side of the Marvel Universe that they've left practically untouched. They already have Punisher and Blade available for use again, and by adding Daredevil they could really begin to tackle the dark and violent side of the superhero business.

Marvel's Phase Two Master Plan rounds into shape

A few months ago in the wake of Marvel's $1B+ grossing The Avengers, we took an early look at what the studio may be planning for for the future. Let's face it, what Marvel Studios accomplished in the previous four years has been unprecedented. Not only did they take a B-level character like Iron Man and build him up to lead the biggest franchise this side of Gotham City, but they set about on an ambitious course that led up to the dream team-up that was The Avengers. Introducing us to Captain America, Thor, S.H.I.E.L.D., and the Hulk along the way, their intricately constructed road map led them all the way to The Avengers being the third highest grossing movie of all-time. Not too shabby.

In the wake of attending Marvel's spectacular Hall H panel this Saturday at Comic-Con, it's clear to me that Marvel is looking to up the ante in a major way. But they also face some potential hurdles with untested properties, unproven filmmakers, and the ever-growing risk of saturating the already bloated comic book movie market. So now that the curtain has mostly been lifted on Phase 2, let's reset things and see where the path to The Avengers 2 may take us.

The first movie coming out of the gate is Iron Man 3, which is currently filming in North Carolina before heading off to China for awhile. After Robert Downey Jr. finished showing off on his way to the floor of Hall H, we were treated to an incredible sizzle reel of footage that showed off Tony Stark's new golden armor, and proved once and for all that Ben Kingsley is in fact playing The Mandarin. Co-written and directed by Shane Black, we know the film will be based in part on the Extremis storyline, which involves Iron Man facing off against foes powered by nanobots.

Shane Black had been adamantly against using The Mandarin because he was created as something of a Chinese stereotype, and with China co-financing the film it seemed less likely the character would be used. The character has evolved considerably over the years into more of a technological terrorist and business nemesis of Stark's, equipped with ten rings of incredible power. Due to hit theaters on May 3rd 2013, Iron Man 3 will be the first feature film to tackle the repercussions of The Avengers.

After talking with some of my colleagues, I'm pretty much alone in thinking that the Marvel One-Shot short film, Item 47, is going to have some impact during Phase 2. I was lucky enough to attend a sneak screening of the film last week, and there is one major idea introduced of some importance. I won't spoil it, as you can see it for yourself as part of The Avengers Blu-Ray on September 25th, but the story involves a hard luck couple(Lizzy Caplan and Jesse Bradford) who find the last remaining alien weapon after the concluding war in The Avengers. They proceed to go off on a little crime spree, which gets S.H.I.E.L.D. involved to put a stop to it. My only tip is to just pay attention during the closing credits sequence. That's all.

The next two movies are still mostly under wraps, but we can draw some conclusions based on the new titles Marvel has given them. The Thor sequel is now known as Thor: The Dark World, and is scheduled to hit theaters on November 8th 2013. Most of the original cast is expected to return, with the exception of Zachary Levi taking on the role of Fandral of the Warriors Three, replacing Joshua Dallas. Most of the attention has focused on the villain, with Mads Mikkelsen initially set for the role before dropping out last week. Speculation has been that he would play Skurge The Executioner, which would certainly mean Amora the Enchantress would be along as well. Both are longtime Thor rivals, with Amora frequently attempting to seduce the thunder god while also trying to destroy him. The film's title doesn't really give us any clues, but it could mean two things. Either Thor will be journeying to Hel, the realm of the dead; or he could be transported to Svartalfheim, where the Dark Elves lives. We also know that Thor is dragging along his half-elf brother, Loki, and that he's got the powerful Cosmic Cube with him. It's the Cube, also known as the Tesseract, which has caught the attention of of the death obsessed Thanos, seen during the closing credits of The Avengers. And let's not forget that Thanos' weapon of choice, the Infinity Gauntlet, is still holed up in Odin's throne room.

We can pretty much tell exactly what Marvel is planning based for the Captain America sequel based on the new subtitle, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. For those who don't know, The Winter Soldier is the name given to Bucky Barnes, Cap's buddy who we last saw falling to his death during the previous film. Sebastian Stan played Bucky before, and looks to be having an expanded role now, but whether they will stick to the comic book interpretation of the character or go a different route is unclear.

In the comics, Bucky is a child sidekick to Captain America, but after his apparent demise during an explosion, his body is recovered by Russians who turn him into a soldier for their cause and keeping him in cryostasis so his aging is slowed. With a total loss of memory, he would spend decades performing assassinations and other black ops work, and along the way has a brief relationship with another Russian operative, Black Widow. Does that mean Scarlett Johansson could turn up in the film? Possibly. We've learned previously that the sequel will be set in the present, so she could join Cap in trying to bring Bucky down. Now, in the comics, Winter Soldier eventually becomes Captain America after Steve Rogers is killed, but the chances of that happening in the film are zero. No chance. What we don't know is who will be pulling Winter Soldier's strings in the movie, so assume the Red Skull will be making a return visit. He also would have more than a passing interest in the fate of his precious Cosmic Cube. We've also learned that Anthony Mackie will be taking on the role of Falcon, another of Captain America's sidekicks who was granted his powers from the Red Skull, making it even more likely the villain will be back. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is directed by the Russo Brothers and is set to open on April 4th 2014.

The full brunt of Thanos' schemes will likely be levied against the Guardians of the Galaxy. We've known for weeks that Marvel was planning the film as one of their mystery 2014 projects, so it wasn't a surprise when they unveiled it at Comic-Con. Setting it for release on August 1st 2014, the space faring team has a number of ties to Thanos that will undoubtedly come into play. There have been a number of members over the years, but Marvel was nice enough to provide a handy piece of concept art revealing which ones made the movie cut. Peter Quill aka Star-Lord is the leader, a character with an unusual background who grew up to be an astronaut and stealing the job of intergalactic police officer from a colleague. Groot is a plant creature who initially arrived on Earth to capture and study humans, but was destroyed. He would eventually grow back thanks to his powers, and become a part of Nick Fury's monstrous version of the Howling Commandos. The most popular character by far is Rocket Raccoon, an anthropomorphic raccoon and the guardian of the Keystone Quadrant, hailing from the planet Halfworld. He's fiercely loyal, a master military strategist, and is basically like the team mascot. He'll have to be rendered in CGI, much like the rest of the film, I imagine. Gamora is the last of her species, found by Thanos who raises her to be an assassin. Why he'd need one is beyond me considering he's one of the most powerful being in the entire Marvel universe. Anyway, when she figures out that Thanos is planning to wipe out all life in the universe, she turns on him and joins the Guardians of the Galaxy, wielding one massive sword to smite her foes. Lastly, Drax the Destroyer started out as the human, Arthur Douglas, who is killed along with his wife by Thanos. He is reincarnated in a new super powerful body and christened Drax the Destroyer, with the sole purpose of killing Thanos. He can also sense the presence of Thanos across vast distances.

Marvel surprised us all by having Edgar Wright show up on stage, Ant-Man comic book in hand, to announce that they were moving forward with the pint-sized hero's movie adventures. Wright then showed off some amazing test footage he shot weeks ago, showing Ant-Man using his shrinking/growing abilities to beat the snot out of two random agents in a hallway. While obviously very raw, and with a stuntman under the mechanical helmet, the footage looked solid and more intense than you'd expect from an Ant-Man movie. We didn't get a release date, or any casting info, so we're obviously in very early days here. We know it will be based to some degree on the Marvel Premier issue titled 'To Steal an Ant Man', and if the footage is anything to go by it will be full of action. Assuming all goes well with The World's End, which Wright begins directing in October, he could be off and running on Ant-Man by the middle of 2013. Since there are already two Marvel movies in 2014, we probably won't see it until 2015, likely just before The Avengers 2 opens.

Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man mark the biggest risks Marvel faces. Much of the former's success will depend on the director, and I'd love to see them reach out to someone with a proven sci-fi track record like Duncan Jones(Moon, Source Code). Hey, wasn't he up for The Wolverine at one point?  Edgar Wright, for as much as fans love him, is still mostly an unknown quantity to American audiences. He's constantly overshadowed by his frequent collaborators, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, and the one time he ventured out totally on his own he produced a major box office flop in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

Marvel only has themselves to worry about at this point. Warner Brothers and DC are still in the infancy stages of their plans, and by the time they get into full swing Marvel will already be well into Phase Three.

Marvel moves mystery 2014 movie to August

With Marvel set to have a major presence at Comic-Con starting next week, they're firming up the release dates for one of their future films. With Captain America 2 set for April 4th 2014, there's been that mystery film occupying the May 16th slot. Just last week we learned it may be the space-faring Guardians of the Galaxy, and while nothing has been confirmed yet, Marvel has taken that release date and bumped it to August 1st.

Whether it's Guardians of the Galaxy or not, this is a smart move for Marvel. We've already talked about how the upcoming Ninja Turtles film would have released on May 16th, which would have split the audience of comic book fans. But also it gives Marvel some separation from The Amazing Spider-Man sequel which arrives on May 2nd. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes would have arrived on May 23rd, and Pixar's The Good Dinosaur on May 30th. That's a 'Murderer's Row' of flicks that would take a bite out of any studio's bottom line. Don't be surprised to see some of these movies shuffled around as well.

We'll find out probably in the next few days if the film is Guardians of the Galaxy, but let's just go ahead and assume it is. August is usually the weakest month of the summer, and since the team is generally unknown to most people, a wide open release date is a must. Marvel will likely tie the film in pretty heavily to The Avengers, and with Thanos lurking as the big baddie, they have a built-in association.

Disney Animation to tackle Marvel's 'Big Hero 6'!

You probably don't recognize the name Scott Lobdell, but if you were a fan of X-men comics in the 90s then you know he was the longtime writer of mutant adventures for Marvel Comics. He's also a terrible writer, in my opinion, but he had occasional flashes of brilliance. One of those was a silly little comic book series featuring a Japanese cast title Big Hero 6. Not many remember it, and it's certainly not at the top of Marvel's list of big name properties, but they may be headed to a theater near you real soon, courtesy of Walt Disney Animation.

We'd heard rumors that Marvel and Pixar could be teaming up on an animated film at some point, but it looks like it'll be Disney Animation that takes on the job first. The report first surfaced over at It's On the Grid, and then was backed up by Blue Sky Disney. Even better? The film will be directed by Don Hall, who did such a bang up job on last year's Winnie the Pooh.

So who are Big Hero 6? They're a quirky and fun combination of Japanese movie stereotypes all rolled into one. Their members include the Silver Samurai, Sunfire, GoGo Tomago, Honey Lemon, Hiro Takachiho, Fred, and Baymax. Hiro is a boy genius with a robotic guardian, while Fred can transform into giant Godzilla-type creature. They became semi-popular after their appearance in the Alpha Flight comic, leading to a great limited series written by Lobdell. He didn't create the characters, but he made them fresh and funny and unlike any other hero team out there.

The film is expected to arrive some time in 2014, but there is one problem. Sunfire is basically an X-men, which means he would fall under the rights held by 20th Century Fox. The same goes for the Silver Samurai, who we know will be appearing in Hugh Jackman's The Wolverine. So that means some changes are going to have to be made. Still, this is great news, and promises we'll see more of Marvel and Disney putting their unique relationship to good use.
