Marvel Announces Release Dates for Five Mystery Films Through 2019

And this is how you drum up buzz before blowing the lid off at Comic-Con. A few months ago Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told us he had all of Marvel's movies mapped out through 2028, and while that seemed like a bit of a stretch because things change, we now know there's a plan in place at least through 2019. Marvel has just revealed five release dates for unknown titles starting in 2017 and stretching into 2019.

No word on what the films will be but we can certainly speculate. Guardians of the Galaxy arrives next month, followed by Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1st 2015, then Ant-Man kicks off Phase Three on July 17th 2015. Captain America 3 arrives on May 6th 2016, and then Marvel had two slots ready for unknown films on July 8th 2016, which will likely be for Doctor Strange, and then one on May 5th 2017.

The new release dates are July 28, 2017, November 3, 2017, July 6, 2018, November 2, 2018 and May 3, 2019.

So let's do some guesswork. We know Thor 3 is in the works and has writers lined up, and it makes sense to have that fill the May 2017 slot. July 2017 seems like a perfect date for Avengers 3, and there has been talk of a sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy which will probably fill one spot. What else? Maybe the much talked-about solo Hulk film? Or is now the time for Black Panther to finally get his moment in the sun? There are way too many options out there, including a Black Widow movie, so we're just going to have to wait and see what news breaks at Comic-Con. With seven open dates needing to be filled we could be on the verge of one epic day of announcements.

Zac Efron Rumored for an Unspecified Marvel Role

With Disney owning pretty much every major franchise there's always another big role right around the corner. The rumors of Zac Efron being a part of Star Wars: Episode VII, some of which were pushed by the actor himself, didn't really work out. But now there's a chance he could end up in another major Disney project.

A story over at Latino Review says Efron is up for an unspecified Marvel role, with a script already in his possession. So what is it? Nobody knows, but Disney supposedly saw how successful Neighbors was at the box office and figured it was time to bring their High School Musical star back into the fold.  It's possible he's up for a part in one of the Netflix series coming up, but the likelihood he'd want to do TV now is slim. Efron as Daredevil, maybe? Let's hope not.

Anyway, keep the source in mind and and wait until something concrete comes down. It may turn out this was all a bunch of smoke and no fire.

Interview: Joe and Anthony Russo Talk 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier', 'Cap 3', and Being Marvel Geeks

Never let it be said that Marvel hasn't been doing some out of the box thinking when it comes to building their cinematic universe of superheroes. And part of that was their decision to hire Joe and Anthony Russo, directors best known for comedies like Welcome to Collinwood, You Me & Dupree, and NBC's Community, to helm Captain America: The Winter Soldier. But just like nearly every other gamble Marvel has taken, it was one that paid off in spades. The film thrusts Cap into an unfamiliar world where the good guys and bad guys aren't clearly defined, and the government is willing to sacrifice freedom at the altar of security.

My colleague +Tim Gordon  and I had a chance to sit down with the Russo Brothers and talk about their inspirations for Captain America 2, their comic book geek credentials, and what the future holds for Captain America 3.  Check out the interview below, then check out my review of the film here! Captain America: The Winter Soldier is in theaters now!

Kevin Feige Says Marvel Course Set Through 2028; 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Spinoffs Possible

"I could arguably say what we’re planning for the year 2021. Will that happen? I don’t know. But what we planned for 2015 in 2006 is happening.”

That was what Marvel's top guy Kevin Feige said not too long ago in regards to the future of the cinematic universe he's helped cultivate. It's safe to say that his forward-thinking is a big part of why Marvel is leaps and bounds ahead of Warner Bros., and likely will be for a long time. But it turns out Feige was selling it short when he said plans were plotted out through 2021, because it actually goes much further.

With Captain America: The Winter Soldier playing in theaters right now (my review here), Bloomberg did a thorough feature on Feige, and Marvel's head honcho revealed he has a map of future films plastered on his wall.

“It’s like looking through the Hubble telescope. You go, ‘What’s happening back there? I can sort of see it,’ ” he laughs. “They printed out a new one recently that went to 2028.”

That's awfully far ahead, and obviously nothing is set in stone. But it does show why Marvel always seems to be ahead of the game in finding new stars and directors; it's because Feige is thinking about them well in advance.

And speaking of looking ahead, producer Bob Iger mentions his desire to try and replicate the success of The Avengers with other teams, namely the Guardians of the Galaxy. That means potentially there could be spinoff films for Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Gamora, Drax, and Groot. Not sure how a Groot film would work, but a Rocket solo would be sweet. I'd much rather see other cosmic characters affiliated with the team get their own movies, namely Adam Warlock, Nova, and Captain Marvel.

The amazing thing is that we're only six years removed from the first Iron Man film, and in that time Marvel has literally changed the face of Hollywood blockbusters. And with hundreds, maybe even thousands of characters to choose from, Feige is only just scratching the surface of where Marvel can go.

Rumor: Marvel's Phase Three Includes Doctor Strange, but No 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Sequel

While there's still a good deal of Marvel's Phase Two left, plans are already underway for Phase Three. And that of course means the rumors are already flying around about which films will comprise the next blockbuster line-up. Release dates seem to be locked in place, and we know Ant-Man will be amongst them, with development on Captain America and Thor sequels having begun. But we've also heard promises of a Doctor Strange film and some early buzz about Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Will either of those films make the cut? A new rumor has emerged that claims to have the answer.

According to the guys at Schomes Know (judge accordingly), the "absolute certain" line-up for Phase Three is Ant-Man, Captain America 3, Thor 3, The Avengers 3, and Doctor Strange. Marvel President Kevin Feige has basically been confirming Doctor Strange for awhile, so that's not much of a surprise. But what about 'Guardians 2'? The site's source claims that Marvel always envisioned it as a "one and done", and that continues to be their mindset unless that has suddenly changed in the last couple of weeks. The recent rumors of a sequel would seem to suggest their opinion has changed, but none of this can be taken as gospel until we hear some confirmations. The source continues on by saying...

"They only have so many films they can do each year and they don’t want them all to be trilogies to where they’re just dealing with the same handful of characters for the next 5-10 years."

But that doesn't really make sense considering most of these franchises have been staggered. Iron Man is done; Captain America and Thor are on the verge of completing their trilogies, which would open up room for two more. And in regards to new franchises, Black Panther and Inhumans are still in the pipeline but still a ways off.

Other than the Guardians of the Galaxy bit, none of this is particularly special. They go on to say that an announcement will come at Comic-Con, which is pretty much a given, right?

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Debrief: Episode 1.12, "Seeds"

Trill Believers! We get a whole new episode and S.H.I.E.L.D. is shady status quo, but it’s also back to the adventure of the week. This time there are weird happenings at S.H.I.E.L.D. Science and Technology Academy which Fitz and Simmons have been asked to come and check it out. Ah, but this time it’s different, Coulson and May go off on their own adventure so it's time to split up the kids from the adults for an episode!

So Fitz, Simmons, Ward and Skye all go to, what amounts to basically S.H.I.E.L.D. MIT to go fish out who is setting up freezing bombs with technology Fitz and Simmons created while at school there. Since this is the first time Skye is seeing a S.H.I.E.L.D. academy Fitz, Simmons and Ward explain the differences between the Science and Tech cadets and the Operative cadets like Ward was. It’s kind of explained like it’s a version of super spy Alpha Betas vs. Tri Lambs from Revenge of the Nerds or something though.

During all of this our man Coulson is very bummed out, sitting there looking at his autopsy pictures wondering the whys on his situation to a point that May is worried about him and decides to get his mind on to something else. The something else is the secret past of Skye and why that Agent died while delivering her to that orphanage. May has a lead on that agent’s former partner who went off the grid and he’s in Mexico City. Back at the academy Skye and Ward are going around asking questions of students who might be using Fitz and Simmon's creation, during this Ward is also showing Skye some of the history and culture of S.H.I.E.L.D. The team learns about a young student named Donnie Gill who is a bit of a loner and doesn’t have any friends there. The suspicion of him is cast off during a full student body assembly led by Fitz & Simmons when Donny himself is frozen in place by one of the devices. The team scrambles quickly to save the kid and unfreeze him.

Ward thinks that while they continue the search that Fitz should go check on Donnie and befriend him to make sure he’s alright. So Fitz meets the kid who is a fan of him a bit (note at the academy Fitz & Simmons are like the Zack and Kelly of the place, all the kids sweat them hard) and Fitz notices the kid’s genius. Fitz ends up helping the kid with some problems he was having in upgrading one of Fitz’s old ideas on the freezing machines. Ward and Skye are taken by Simmons to the hangout area of the academy called the boiler room to do some more recon. They learn that Donnie isn’t as alone as they thought and that he’s working with another classmate named Seth. Ward contacts Fitz to put him onto what’s going on so that he would go back and when he does Fitz is knocked out by Seth.

In Mexico City we have Coulson and May staked out in Lola (Coulson’s whip of choice) while May is talking an uncharacteristically a lot to which Coulson notices. She keeps bringing up ways for Coulson to disappear and go off the grid. All that talk is ended once they see the man they are looking for and in classic Marvel fashion a fight ensues with May and the former Agent named Lumley which is ended once Coulson uses Lola’s flying ability to follow him and says that that is S.H.I.E.L.D. Coulson and May take Lumley to the Bus and ask him about what happened to his partner and why he went into hiding. He tells them of a mission where a 084 (item of strange origin code as we learned in the episode 0-8-4) and that a whole town of massacred but this one baby. They learned that the baby was the 084 and that their whole S.H.I.E.L.D. team was killed and Lumley and his partner decided to make up a new identity for the baby and while his partner was taking the baby to the orphanage she was killed. Lumley then disappeared. Lumley then asked Coulson was the child ok since if so it was all worth it. Coulson responded yes and decided to drop him off in a random location as they headed back to meet up with their team.

So now that Donnie has his device fixed he and Seth call Ian Quinn (you know the fake James bond villain dude from episode 3) of Quinn Worldwide to sell him this new device. Seth’s father works with Quinn and wants to use this as an in to making a lot of money. He ends up telling Quinn about the investigation and Quinn pulls out but asks the kid to demonstrate anyway. Seth decides to comply while Donnie is leery since it has never been tested. They turn the machine and while it looks like nothing happens what does happen is kind of a rip off of the scene from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs but its all super hail that flies out the giant super storm that machine created. Coulson learns about Quinn’s involvement and Coulson then decides to tell Skye everything he’s learned since he doesn’t want to manipulate people. The team has a plan to get down to where Seth and Donnie are with May using her uber pilot skills to land the plane in the eye of the storm. Donnie tries to figure out how to stop the machine and get Seth to help him but it explodes knocking Seth unconscious and knocking back Donnie with it being destroyed.

They plane lands and the Team tries to help Seth but he dies from cardiac arrest as Donnie is dismayed. Donnie is then sent to the sandbox so that S.H.I.E.L.D. can keep an eye on him. Coulson decides to give old Ian Quinn a call stating that it’s basically ON LIKE DONKEY KONG with Quinn countering with a The Clairvoyant says what’s up.  The post credits scene (still weird they are doing this in TV too) has Donnie Gill sitting in a seat as he drags his finger across the window he notices that it’s freezing as it goes on along. BAM we have our second classic super villain in the show.

Did you Know:

So Donnie Gill is known in the classic Marvel comics as the Blizzard (actually Blizzard #2) an Iron Man villain that wears a suit that gives him freezing powers. He’s also been a member of the Master of Evil and also became hero for a while joining the Thunderbolts. He was recently changed in a big way during the Marvel Comics event Infinity and I’m not going to spoil it.

Also it seems going by the show each time Ian Quinn has showed up a classic Marvel villain is created.

During the big assembly speech by Fitz and Simmons they talk about Hydra, Centipede and AIM. That means my theory that AIM is Centipede has gone kablooey.

Even though it just came back the show is going back on break until the beginning of February. I’m guessing that is where a lot of story and world buildup to Captain America 2 timeframe.

Peaces trill believers.

Ben Kingsley Hints at a Mystery Marvel Project

The response to Marvel's handling of classic villain the Mandarin in Iron Man 3 has been pretty split, with some loving the comedic turn the character takes and others being upset he wasn't more like the familiar version. But what there isn't much debate over is how great Ben Kingsley was in the drunken, overly theatrical role, and now it sounds like Marvel may want to see a little bit more of it.

While talking to The Belfast Telegraph, Kingsley revealed that he's working on a secret Marvel project, and he even dropped a tiny bit of info on it....

Kingsley: "It's a secret Marvel project. I'm not allowed to say any more, you're going to have to wait and see. I was with many members of the crew that were involved in Iron Man 3. It was lovely to see them again. It was great to be with this wonderful family."

So it sounds as if it's already been shot, which means it was likely one of Marvel's series of One-Shot short films, perhaps showing Trever Slattery before he became the global terrorist Mandarin? Or maybe he shot a cameo for a future Marvel movie?  Perhaps we'll get to see Slattery putting his acting skills to good use in a maximum security SHIELD prison? He and the other inmates could put on a great show.

Vin Diesel Confirms Marvel Phase Three Project; Teases a "Merging of Brands"

We've talked a lot on this site about Vin Diesel's adoration and respect for his fans, and how he's used that to keep projects like Riddick going when they no longer seem feasible. Regardless of the film he's working on, Diesel always keeps his loyal followers in the loop, and their enthusiasm seems to affect him as well. That in turn, makes him one of the more open celebrities out there, and a welcome resource now that he's part of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.

Diesel has spoken before about what happened at this past Comic-Con, when we were all expecting the announcement of his Marvel role, only to have him promise it in a few weeks after being put on the spot by a questioning fan. In a conversation with the lovely Maria Menounos (transcribed by Bleeding Cool), he goes even further, and reveals something that could be incredibly huge on the horizon...

"When I met with Marvel it wasn’t for anything immediate, it was to talk about a film that would be introduced in the Phase 3 part of Marvel, not for a few years. You wouldn’t be able to see it for a few years. In my mind, Marvel were doing it right, they were enrolling me at the ground level which is the best way to enrol me.

I had heard people over the last year, people saying on the social media page saying “What’s up Vin? Why aren’t you going to Marvel? Why aren’t you doing anything with Marvel? It would be a crime of cinematic history for you not to be in [Marvel movies]”

So I was thinking “This Marvel thing is really becoming really important for these people. What can I do? What should I think about?”

I get the call, I go down to Marvel. A great meeting. It was even talking about something so big I can’t even talk about because it’s like the merging of brands in a way, which I won’t get into. That was something way, way, way, way, way down the road."

So what is this "merging of brands" he's talking about? He doesn't really say, but he does confirm that the Phase 3 project Marvel wanted him for is happening, likely around 2016....

"The next Monday, Marvel talks to me and says “We’re going to send something over in two weeks. We want to focus on the 2016 but we also want to, if possible, answer this growing request for something now.” I don’t have six months to play a character in the immediate future, it’s all booked… there was no way I was going to be able to deliver… after Comic-Con, we were at a stalemate…"

It was at that point he joined 'Guardians' as the voice of Groot, meaning Diesel could very well be a part of two Marvel franchises at the same time while only appearing on screen in one. But a merging of brands suggests properties that aren't currently connected suddenly occupying the same space. While he could just mean that Guardians of the Galaxy will be teaming up with Doctor Strange and Ant-Man, the speculation that will emerge from this is that Marvel, Sony, and 20th Century Fox have struck some sort of crazy deal to crossover characters. Isn't that what everyone is dying to see? Whatever the case, it's another reason to continue being excited about what Diesel could mean for the future of Marvel.

You can watch the interview in full below.

Kevin Feige Says Marvel's Movies Planned Out Through 2021

You don't get to be the envy of every studio in Hollywood by waiting around until the last second to formulate a plan, and Marvel has been looking forward in planning their cinematic universe since before 2008's Iron Man. Already we've seen them putting the pieces in place for Phase Three, with a trio of open mystery dates in 2016 and 2017 that fans are eager to see filled. Movies like The Avengers don't just happen overnight, and seeing how intricately Marvel builds to the big payoff is just one reason why audiences love them.

Marvel Studios' chatty president Kevin Feige spoke to Wired and, while he didn't go into details, suggested that they have their entire film slate mapped out through 2021.

Feige: “I could arguably say what we’re planning for the year 2021. Will that happen? I don’t know. But what we planned for 2015 in 2006 is happening.”

While it should hardly come as a surprise, considering we've already heard talk of Doctor Strange and Black Panther receiving their own films, Feige does talk about expanding the cinematic universe in the future...

Feige: “Five years ago, looking at our plan, we knew that if Avengers was going to work, the movies had to stand alone. Now we have to prove to the studio that we’re more than just these five characters, these five franchises.”

Edgar Wright's Ant-Man will kick off Phase Three in 2015, and we can expect to see The Avengers 3 a couple of years after that or possibly in 2018. The mystery dates could be filled by sequels to Thor or Captain America, and maybe Guardians of the Galaxy if it proves to be a hit. Doctor Strange and Black Panther could fit in there somewhere, possibly taking one of the mystery dates, but there's a chance that Marvel is holding something secret up their sleeve. A lot could change depending on the market, the new TV series Agents of SHIELD, and other unforeseen issues , but it sounds like Marvel is ready to go for a very long time. The big question is whether or not Robert Downey Jr. and Iron Man 4 factors into the equation.

What Marvel hero do you hope makes it to the big screen? Personally I'm hoping for Luke Cage, Moon Knight, and the New Warriors. Probably fat chance on two of those.

Is Vin Diesel About To Join The Marvel Universe?

Few can work the magic of Facebook better than Vin Diesel. The social networking actor regularly keeps his fans in the loop, and it's largely due to those efforts that got Riddick off the ground. In other words, he doesn't put anything on his Facebook page lightly, which makes his latest post very interesting.

In his latest comment, Diesel says that Marvel wants to meet with him soon, although he has no idea why....

Diesel: “Marvel has requested a meeting… no idea what for… haha, you probably know better than me…”

Meaning nobody knows anything, but the obvious speculation is that Marvel wants him to be a part of their cinematic universe. Diesel would seem like an obvious pick to play a comic book hero of some sort, but he doesn't readily fit into the roles we're expecting to open up when Marvel reveals their latest line-up of films. Three mystery dates have been announced, two in 2016 and one in 2017, and it's presumed that Doctor Strange and Black Panther would be two of those. Or maybe Diesel is in line to play a Phase Two character, possibly the villain Thanos? My guess is Marvel wants him to voice Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy. For the record I'd kill to see the Internet uproar if Marvel cast him as Doctor Strange or Ant-Man. It would simply be too delicious. I seem to recall a lot of rumors before about Diesel possibly playing the android Avenger, Vision. Maybe they weren't so far-fetched, after all?

We'll see what comes of all this. Perhaps we'll have a chance to see Diesel stride across the stage at Comic-Con next month?

Two Mystery Marvel Projects Dated for 2016 and 2017

Marvel's second phase only just began with last month's Iron Man 3 (it was only a month ago???), and doesn't end until The Avengers 2 in May 2015. Disney and Marvel didn't get this far by waiting around, though, and already they're setting the stage for Phase Three by dating two mystery projects.

In the midst of a sudden flurry of activity today, Disney has set aside May 6, 2016 and May 5, 2017 for two unknown Marvel movies. Making this announcement now all but guarantees we'll learn more during the inevitable Marvel panel at Comic-Con next month, but speculation about what these movies could be has already begun. The most obvious candidates are Dr. Strange and Black Panther, with rumors about both picking up of late. There's also been talk of an Inhumans film, or these spots could be reserved for Captain America, Thor, or Guardians of the Galaxy sequels. If they stick by the usual schedule, expect at least one more film to hit in those years.

The next film on the slate is Thor: The Dark World, coming up this November 8th.

Marvel eyes John C. Reilly for 'Guardians of the Galaxy' as plot details emerge

When Marvel's Kevin Feige began talking about adding the quirky team of intergalactic heroes known as the Guardians of the Galaxy to their cinematic universe, it signaled a definite change in tone and scope. The film is shaping up to be wildly ambitious, and the opening salvo in what could be many set in the outer reaches of deep space. As production gears up, the cast is still being finalized and the many offbeat story threads tied together, and now we're learning details on how Marvel plans to bring the action from the comics to the silver screen.

According to HitFix, the character Rhomann Dey will be a major part of the story, but not quite like he was in the comics. Dey is essentially like the Abin Sur character in the Green Lantern mythos. He was a leader in the elite Nova Corps, who after crashing on Earth and near death, chose the human Rich Rider to become the new Nova. Marvel has made an offer to John C. Reilly to play the part, and if he does it will essentially make him the "Agent Coulson" of the 'Guardians' team. Basically, the character has been completely retooled to be the human go-between, informing SHIELD of their various activities.

Does this mean that we can expect to see Nova in the film? Not exactly, but we do already expect to see the Nova Corps in there somewhere, although it's unclear in what capacity.  What's more, Dey is expected to have a peer or liaison on Earth, and the names being kicked around for the role are Alan Rickman, Hugh Laurie, and Ken Watanabe. So basically someone commanding with an international flavor.

Chris Pratt may have seemed like an unlikely choice to play Peter Quill aka Star-Lord, the team's leader, but Marvel have plans for him to be their new Robert Downey Jr. Quill isn't the billionaire playboy that Tony Stark is, but he's funny, heroic, and has a way with the ladies (alien or otherwise), all traits Pratt should be more than able to fill.

We've heard Zoe Saldana talking quite a bit about her role as the green-skinned warrior, Gamora, but HitFix suggests she has yet to fully commit to the role. If that's true, then it's probably just a matter of time. Like practically every member of the team, Gamora has a strong connection to Thanos, and it sounds like they are making some small changes to tie her in even more. In the film version, she is the last of her kind after Thanos wiped out her planet when she was an infant (in the comics it was the alien Badoon who did it). Raised and trained by Thanos to be a superhuman blade-wielding warrior in his service, she eventually turned on him when his evil nature became clear.

Drax, who will be played by ex-WWE star Dave Bautisa, seems to be virtually unchanged. He was still a saxophone player on Earth named Art Douglas who was killed by Thanos in the Mojave Desert. His spirit is then taken by the Titan known as Kronos and placed within a powerful new body and christened Drax the Destroyer, whose only purpose is to destroy Thanos.

The CG characters like Rocket Raccoon and Groot will have major parts to play as well. We can expect to run into Rocket and his first mate Wal Russ, a talking walrus of course, as they are guards in the intergalactic Keystone Quadrant, an asylum for the mentally insane. Groot's actions on Earth will put him in the crosshairs of a familiar face, one Nick Fury, who convinces the plant creature not to experiment on humans but to become their protector instead.  If Fury's around, the door is definitely open to see other characters from previous films.

Just because the bulk of the cast is associated with Thanos does not make him the villain of the piece. Instead, it looks like it will Michael Rooker as Yondu, who in the comics was a founding member of the original Guardians of the Galaxy squad from the far-flung future. He's billed as being some sort of space pirate, which doesn't exactly fit, so there may some major reworking of his character being done for the benefit of the film.

Perhaps most intriguing of all is Lee Pace, who came aboard in a mystery role a few months ago. He's set to play a villain, at least at the early stages of the story, but will eventually switch over to the side of good. All of this would be in the setting up of his own spinoff film, which makes the question of his character's identity all the more interesting. Could he be the all-powerful Adam Warlock, who began as an evil creation but was transformed by the power of the Infinity Gems, Thanos' weapon of choice? It would seem to make sense from a storyline standpoint, but it's unlikely that Adam Warlock would be considered spinoff material.  So what about Vance Astro, otherwise known as Major Victory? He was a member of the same Guardians team as Yondu, and would later become a member of the modern day version, utilizing Captain America's shield and adopting a similar attitude. The most obvious choice, though, is that Pace would be playing Mar-Vell, the superhero known as Captain Marvel. One of Marvel's most iconic characters, his involvement would lead pretty easily to the introduction of Carol Danvers aka Ms. Marvel, who many expect to be part of The Avengers 2 in some capacity.

Having worked on three Marvel movies already, the duo of Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have come on to do a final touch up on the script. So...Nova....Nick Fury...spinoffs...Guardians of the Galaxy is shaping up to be a huge, unpredictable new chapter in Marvel's cinematic gameplan. We'll see how it all comes together on August 1st 2014.

Sony considers parting ways with Spider-Man; Could Marvel swoop in?

At one point or another, every comic book fan has lamented that many of Marvel's biggest properties are scattered amongst numerous studios. While the publisher and Disney hold the rights to The Avengers and the vast majority of their funnybook heroes, Fox maintains control of the X-men and Sony has the popular Spider-Man franchise under their belt. But what if Sony were to sell off their rights to the webbed wallcrawler? Would Marvel/Disney swoop in to save the day?

That prospect may be unlikely, but it's not completely off the table, as Sony chief Kazuo Hirai informed Reuters and other outlets that they are considering a radical proposal from investor Daniel Loeb to publicly sell off 20% of their entertainment business. That would include letting go of Spider-Man and the Resident Evil series. The goal would be to raise capital for their electronics arm which continues to struggle against the likes of Apple and Samsung.

Hirai: “Third Point’s proposal involves the way we manage a core business of the Sony group and the direction of our management. So the Sony board will give it thorough consideration before replying to Mr Loeb."

This would obviously be a huge deal and would open up the possibility of Spider-Man swinging his way onto the Avengers.  There aren't many who would be able to match Disney dollar for dollar, so basically if they want Spidey back, they'll get him. This is something worth keeping an eye on. For now, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is still under Sony's watch, and hits theaters on May 2nd 2014.

Patton Oswalt's epic 'Star Wars' rant gets animated

My only question is: What took the Internets so damn long? It was more than a month ago that footage of Patton Oswalt's incredible 8-minute spiel on Star Wars: Episode VII hit the web, and while we did get this cool fanmade poster, it was only a matter of time before somebody with too much time on their hands took it a step further. That guy turns out to be Isaac Moores, who has gone ahead and brought the epic rant to life in animated form, throwing in all of Oswalt's ridiculous and hilarious Star Wars/Marvel crossovers. It's pretty slick, and definitely worth a watch.

Zoe Saldana and Kevin Feige talk 'Guardians of the Galaxy'; 'Ant-Man' needs a rewrite

Iron Man 3 is currently smart-bombing the Hell out of the box office, and just as Tony Stark is a forward thinker, it's time to start looking ahead to what Marvel has in store. One of their biggest Phase 2 gambles is Guardians of the Galaxy, which follows a quirky team of intergalactic heroes based on one of Marvel's more obscure comics.  In keeping with the offbeat tone of it, the cast is an oddball assortment consisting of Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Michael Rooker, Ophelia Lovibond, and Lee Pace, along with Slither director James Gunn. In an interview with EW, Marvel President Kevin Feige talked a little about how he plans on making the team, which consists of the talking Rocket Raccoon and the plant creature Groot, accessible to audiences...

Feige: “It’s a huge story on a massive canvas. We can take it to all those crazy places as long as all the characters respond in an emotionally truthful way. That’s why I believe people are going to respond to Chris Pratt and to an alien Zoë Saldana—because they did respond to that one time before [with 'Avatar']. And to a tree and a raccoon who, it is certainly our intention, will steal the whole movie.”

As for how the film will fit into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, Feige suggests that there may not be any direct links....

Feige:  "Guardians takes place within the continuity of the [other movies] but it’s on the other side of the universe. We’ve always wanted to do a space movie. I’m obsessed with Star Wars, I’m obsessed with Star Trek.”

Zoe Saldana was cornered at the London premiere of Star Trek Into Darkness, and was asked about her role as the green-skinned badass Gamora, arguably the most lethal member of the team. She had nothing but high praise for Gunn, and revealed that she hadn't heard of Guardians of the Galaxy before she won the role...

Kicking off Marvel's Phase Three is Edgar Wright's Ant-Man, and believe it or not it's the film that has been in the works the longest. In fact, it's been around since the Marvel Cinematic Universe was just a twinkle in fanboys' eyes. We first learned about it back in 2006 (!!!), two whole years before Iron Man hit theaters. Because of that, the script by Wright and Joe Cornish (Attack the Block) is need of a little tweaking to make sure it plays nicely with the rest of Marvel's big screen heroes...

Feige: "Frankly, now we have to re-write it to put it a little bit more into the [Marvel Cinematic Universe] because it was written before it existed."

Fans have been throwing around a lot of names to take on the title role, with Nathan Fillion (Firefly) seeming like the most popular choice. Feige says casting will get underway later this year, but they don't have any clear ideas on who they're going to target....

Feige: “We’ve talked about various names over the past eight years but as you can imagine they keep changing as time goes by. But towards the end of this year, we’ll buckle down and start casting and start refining the script, which is great and which is very Edgar. He has done a great job being incredibly true to the comics but is putting his own spin on it, so we’ll be drawing on multiple mythologies for this one.”

It's that "multiple mythologies" bit that is most interesting. There have been a few characters under the Ant-Man mask, and Wright has said his script includes both Hank Pym and Scott Lang.

EW has also released a new image from Thor: The Dark World, and what looks like concept art from Captain America: The Winter Soldier. You can check those out below.

Ant-Man hits theaters on November 6th 2015. Guardians of the Galaxy takes off on August 1st 2014.

Want to see that 'Ant-Man' Comic-Con test footage?

Arguably the most buzz-worthy thing to emerge out of last year's SDCC was Edgar Wright's reveal of some test footage for Ant-Man. While it was hardly finished and featured no known actors, it gave us a glimpse of what he was planning to do with the Marvel superhero. As someone who was there when it debuted, I can say that it was incredible back then, and it still looks pretty good today.

Wright mentioned months ago that the footage could end up online at some point, and now it has, only not in the form he probably had in mind. Showing at a London event recently, it appears that a fan has recorded it and posted it online. You can see now see for yourself what all the fuss was about in bootleg form. Hopefully we'll get a proper version before too long.

Ant-Man is expected to kick off Marvel's Phase 3 when it opens on November 6th 2015. [via BleedingCool]

The Hulk will be back for 'The Avengers 2', but Mark Ruffalo says no solo film

It seems like those deeply connected to The Avengers films can't stop swatting down rumors about the Hulk. You may recall a recent story saying the "Jade Giant" would be getting his own solo film after The Avengers 2, with a storyline that closely resembled Planet Hulk. It was debunked twice soon after, including once by Joss Whedon. Now the guy who actually plays the Hulk, Mark Ruffalo, has stepped in to address the issue personally.

Taking to his Twitter page, Ruffalo shot down any idea of a solo Hulk film, but did confirm when we'd see him next...

"A lot of folks have been asking about the Next Hulk. The next time you see my Hulk it will be in the Avengers 2. No plans for stand alone."

"I am not giving up on another stand alone HULK. But it’s not in the works right now. One never knows what the future will bring."

So it sounds like a solo spinoff is something Ruffalo definitely wants, and I'm betting he gets his wish at some point. The Hulk, at least in the comics, never sticks around on the Avengers roster for very long. He's too much of a danger and loose cannon, often going off to do his own thing. Marvel's Kevin Feige actually made a comment recently to SFX about the team and its ever-shifting roster, saying he and Joss Whedon are big fans of it....

Feige: “I think it’s not a secret that Joss and I and all of us at Marvel think that part of the fun of Avengers is the rotating team, for sure."

Don't be surprised if the the team looks vastly different by the time The Avengers 3 rolls around.

Rumor killer: No Simon Pegg in 'Star Wars'; 'Ghostbusters 3' not animated; No 'Planet Hulk' movie

A lot of rumors for some big films have  cropped up over the last few days, and all at once they seem to have been given the smack down. The biggest by far had Simon Pegg lined up to join his Star Trek Into Darkness director J.J. Abrams for a future Star Wars film. Alfonso Cuaron's name was also put out there as a potential director, but there was no credible source given as to where any of this came from. Now Pegg has taken to Twitter to cleverly shoot rumors of his involvement down...

"No idea where this silly rumour about me attached to the new 'Star Wars' film came from but I can confirm that it's absolute Bantha poodoo"

It made at least a little bit of sense, but right now there will be no Darth Sidious Pegg running around Star Wars: Episode VII.

Ghostbusters 3 has had more than its share of problems, which we all know, and for the most part I've decided to stay out of the rumor-mongering that's been going on. Without Bill Murray there's no reason to care, anyway. But the ongoing development took an interesting turn when Bloody Disgusting suggested that Sony may want to make it an animated feature. Now that I might not be so upset about, and it seems like a more natural fit than just another live-action film with older stars. There was some meat to the rumor, as well, as Sony did in fact have plans to make an animated film back in 2007, but it evolved into the 2009 console video game.

Comingsoon had a chance to speak with the studio, though, and they say there are no plans to animated Ghostbusters 3. So we're going to be stuck with Ivan Retiman, Dan Akroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson in whatever the story is going to entail. They'll likely be passing the torch to a younger generation of ghostbuster.

Earlier this month we were stunned by a huge story that suggested Marvel was planning to center their Phase 3 agenda around The Hulk. This would have included a version of the Planet Hulk storyline, in which he's left stranded in space by his friends, landing on a gladiatorial world where he must fight to survive. This would include a possible Hulk solo film, and a starring turn in The Avengers 3 when he returns to Earth and seeks revenge on his old colleagues. It was a remarkable story, if true, but AICN has now tapped into their sources who say none of that is remotely true....

"According to my source, this just isn't happening - not as long as Marvel's got Mark Ruffalo committed to a six-picture deal as Bruce Banner. And that's the primary issue with PLANET HULK: Banner isn't in it at all (unless you count the WHAT IF... story where Banner is immediately killed upon reaching Sakaar).

To make sure, I went to a another source for confirmation, and they backed up every detail. PLANET HULK isn't happening."

It makes sense they'd want to put an emphasis on Banner with an actor like Ruffalo on board, so the logic seems sound. I still think at some point we may see elements of Planet Hulk/World War Hulk play out in different ways, though.

How will Rocket Raccoon and Groot be animated in 'Guardians of the Galaxy'?

So we already know that Chris Pratt will be taking on one of the live-action human characters in Guardians of the Galaxy, playing team leader Star-Lord after a lengthy casting search. But the quirky team of galactic warriors also includes a talking raccoon, Rocket Raccoon to be exact, and a sentient tree creature named Groot. One of the big questions has been how Marvel plans on animating them both.

My speculation has been that both would be totally CG creations, and that's not completely off the mark. While talking to CinemaBlend (via Bleeding Cool), Marvel's visual effects wiz Victoria Alonso revealed that a combination of approaches will be required...

Alonso: "We’re going to do a combination. You can’t do any motion capture with a raccoon – they won’t let you put the suit on [laughs]. But we will do rotomation, probably, for some of the behavior. Rocket will have his own personality, of course, and clearly we can’t do mocap on a tree, per say, but we definitely will have performers to emulate what James Gunn will lead to be the behavior and the performance. He’s very clear on where he wants to take the characters"

If you've seen Richard Linklater's Waking Life, then you know what rotoscoping looks like, and this is basically a form of animation using that technique, likely involving some form of live performance.  I doubt it'll look exactly like what Linklater did, though. As for Groot, it sounds like some form of performance capture will be involved. Maybe they can get Andy Serkis? Eh, probably not.

We're still waiting to find out who will do the voice acting on both characters, but we've heard the names Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler rumored. They'd certainly add to the offbeat tone, that's for sure. I've always envisioned Rocket Raccoon with the voice of a 1940s-era gangster. Not sure why. Maybe it's the giant gun he carries around?

Guardians of the Galaxy lands in theaters on August 1st 2014.
