Review: 'Life After Beth' Starring Dane DeHaan and Aubrey Plaza

NOTE: This is a reprint of my review from the Sundance Film Festival.  Life After Beth is available now exclusively on DirecTV.

It seems like so long ago that zombie movies were cool, but eventually the market became so flooded with the undead that they became as stale as their rotted flesh. That's led to a number of twists on the zombie genre designed to give it a fresh look; make them funny (thank you Shaun of the Dead), make them romantic parodies (lookin' at you Warm Bodies), make them something other than scary flesh-eaters. And already we've seen so many of these films that the update is in dire need of an update, best evidenced by Life After Beth, an indistinguishable and messy zombie comedy with a lot of talent but not a lot of laughs.

Written and directed by Jeff Baena, co-writer of David O. Russell's wonky I Heart Huckabees, Life After Beth is just as scattered tonally, and doesn't seem to have a clear point to make about relationships. An ominous shot of a girl hiking through the woods introduces us very briefly to Beth (Aubrey Plaza), who had just recently dumped her ex-boyfriend Zach (Dane DeHaan) to "see other people". When she dies suddenly under mysterious circumstances, Zach is understandably broken up and reaches out for any connection to her he can find. That means spending a lot of time with her parents (John C. Reilly and Molly Shannon), and pining for a second chance to do things over.

Miraculously, he gets his wish when Beth shows up at her home with zero recollection of anything that had happened. She doesn't remember the break-up or any of the problems that led up to it; all she recalls are the happy times. At first Zach comes to believe she's a zombie, but is unable to convince Beth's parents who want to act as if their daughter's return is perfectly normal. Eventually Zach just decides to go with it and take this opportunity to fix their relationship. It's like a really screwed up version of The Vow as they go out to their favorite spots and even have sex (ewwwww), while her fractured memory continues to deteriorate. But when she starts to decompose and give in to fits of rage, not even Zach is able to ignore it for long.

Ostensibly about our need to hold on to an ugly but comfortable past rather than moving on to something new, the Baena never takes this idea seriously enough for it to hold any significance. Nor is there any consistency to Zach's reaction to Beth's return. At first shocked and a little horrified, he goes in a flash to loving her again, only to fall out of love just as quickly. As he attempts to move on with an old acquaintance (Anna Kendrick), Zach just looks like a jerk, and a wish-washy one at that. No wonder Beth dumped him in the first place.

With a supporting cast that also includes Paul Reiser and Cheryl Hines, there a number of funny comic touches, but laughs never come consistently. The best gags come as Beth begins to exhibit zombie behavior for the first time, subtly snapping her jaws and growing more feral. The film makes the most out of zombie indestructibility, and sight gags involving a car and a giant weight strapped to Beth's back are truly inspired. It's unclear whether we're supposed to take this zombie threat (yes there are other undead walking around) seriously or just brush it off as genre silliness. If Baena wants us to take something meaningful from this story it's not readily apparent.

Safety Not Guaranteed offered a small glimpse of the sweeter side of Aubrey Plaza, but we see it fully on display here. She actually gets to cover the entire spectrum as Beth goes from Zach's excitable lover to drenched in blood and screaming at the top of her lungs in anger, confusion, and ultimately hunger. DeHaan is perhaps too cerebral of an actor for a role that requires him to be lighter on his feet comedically, and we get some solid work from the reliable John C. Reilly. Life After Beth doesn't compare to the best the zom-com genre has to offer, but nor is it the absolute worst. It lies somewhere in the unimpressive middle, and maybe it's time for other movies such as this to stay buried for awhile.

New 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Posters Feature Yondu, Nova Prime, and Corpsman Dey

Hard to believe it has been a full year since Marvel revealed the first Guardians of the Galaxy footage at Comic-Con, and it looked fantastic even though filming had only been going on for about a week. Obviously it has improved significantly since then and is now one of the most anticipated event movies of the summer, and it has been treated as such with tons of trailers, TV spots, and images featuring the motley cast led by Chris Pratt, Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, and Dave Bautista. But we haven't seen much from the colorful supporting cast until today with the release of three new character posters.

Giving Glenn Close's Nova Prime, Michael Rooker's Yondu, and John C. Reilly's Corpsman Dey their moment in the spotlight, the images suggest the Nova Corps will be crucial to the story, possibly as a set up to a solo Nova film. The same goes for Yondu, who is the one that raises Peter Quill aka Star-Lord (Pratt) as part of the Ravagers, an intergalactic biker gang of criminals.

Directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy opens August 1st.

Michael Cera, Tye Sheridan, and John C. Reilly Give 'Entertainment'

Whatever one thinks of Rick Alverson's last film, titled The Comedy purely for ironic reasons, it was enough to gain him a lot of attention for whatever he tackled next. And that apparently includes Hollywood because some big names have already come aboard his new film, Entertainment.

John C. Reilly, Tye Sheridan, and Michael Cera will join Angeliki Papoulia (Dogtooth), and Dean Stockwell in the film, which will star comedian Gregg Turkington, who was also featured in The Comedy. Alverson co-wrote the script with Turkington and Tim Heidecker, which follows "a broken and aging comic, known only as “The Comedian,” who travels across the Southwestern United States to meet his estranged daughter while attempting to revive his dwindling career. Along the way, his identity begins to deteriorate amid a series of encounters with the desert populace and a string of dead end shows."

So another "laugh riot" from Alverson and one I hope isn't quite as shamelessly pretentious as The Comedy was. Filming on Entertainment is going on now.  [Deadline]

New 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Extended Trailer, Photos, and More

Today is turning out to be a big one for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. By now thousands of eager Marvelites have had a chance to attend a 17-minute preview of the film, three weeks before it hits theaters. And James Gunn has hit Facebook to announce that he's wrapped up post production and is getting ready to start spreading the word about the space-faring adventure...

Gunn: ”Well, other than finalizing the 3D, I’m officially wrapped on Guardians of the Galaxy and on my way to the airport to fly to Singapore to begin the press wing of this journey. I saw some amazing VFX shots today to wraps things up. I couldn’t be feeling more gratitude and love for all the people who have helped create this film. However the audiences take it, there’s not a single dishonest or impure bone in Guardians’ cinematic body – and that’s a hell of a thing for a spectacle film of this size with so many people involved. Best experience of my life. Thank you all.”

Marvel is jumping into the marketing in another way, as well, by releasing a ton of new photos (some via Empire) and an extended trailer with plenty footage we've never seen. The photos give us a look at Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, and Lee Pace as villain Ronan the Accuser. We also get a glimpse at Ronan's ship, the Dark Aster, not to mention John C. Reilly and Glenn Close as members of the Nova Corp and Michael Rooker as Yondu.

Guardians of the Galaxy opens August 1st.

First Trailer and Posters for Zombie Comedy 'Life After Beth' with Aubrey Plaza and Dane DeHaan

Zombie movies have been a largely overused facet of the horror genre for decades without much deviation, but lately we've started to see filmmakers take the idea in some fun new directions. Of course there was Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland which played up the familiar aspects of zombie movies in a comedic way, and last year's Warm Bodies gave us a romantic twist on the formula. Following a similar path is Jeff Baena's zombie rom-com Life After Beth, which debuted at Sundance and has now just released its first trailer.

Aubrey Plaza and Dane DeHaan play the couple at the center of this one, with him as a guy who desperately wants to get back together with his ex-girlfriend, Beth. Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on how you look at it, he gets that opportunity when she is killed and returns as a slowly deteriorating zombie with total amnesia. Baena has pulled together a great supporting cast with Paul Reiser, John C. Reilly, Anna Kendrick, Molly Shannon, Cheryl Hines, and Matthew Gray Gubler, but it's Plaza who really steals the show in what I believe is her finest work since Safety Not Guaranteed. Overall the film was too inconsistent to make the best use of such a fun idea, saying in my review it "lies somewhere in the unimpressive middle" of the growing zom-com genre.

Life After Beth hits theaters on August 15th.

New 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Trailer Strikes a Serious Note; Plus New Image

The trailers we've seen for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy have largely played down any threat the quirky band of heroes are facing. Considering this is more likely to be a comedy than any other film from Marvel thus far, it makes a certain degree of sense to make light of the combustible team dynamics, and taking that approach certainly didn't hurt The Avengers' bottom line.

But the latest trailer, cut for U.K. audiences, strikes a slightly serious tone as we see glimpses of Star-Lord's (Chris Pratt) origin, followed by a desperate plea for help in saving the universe. So we are thankfully spared the overused "Who?" sequence that has been the centerpiece of the marketing up to this point, in favor of a trailer that highlights the space opera aspects and big Star Wars-style action. It's probably a wise move to show there's more to this film than meets the eye. And speaking of that comedy scene, Marvel has released a new image from it featuring Djimon Hounsou as Korvath.

Directed by James Gunn with Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper co-starring, Guardians of the Galaxy opens August 1st.

Robert De Niro Drives 'Bus 757'; John C. Reilly Joins 'Tale of Tales'; Adrien Brody is the 'Emperor'

* Robert De Niro has added another potentially junky film to his slate, joining the boringly-titled Bus 757. Directed by Scott Mann (The Tournament), the story follows "a casino card dealer who puts together a crew to simultaneously rob a bank and hijack a bus full of hostages to use as collateral. De Niro will play “The Pope,” a casino owner with illegitimate business practices whose assets are the targets of the heist." This has "Wal-Mart $5 bin" written all over it, but we'll see. [Deadline]

* The always reliable John C. Reilly and Toby Jones (Capote) have joined Tale of Tales, the latest film from Gomorrah director, Matteo Garrone.  This is shaping up to be a major project with Oscar winner Alexandre Desplat providing the score and a four month shoot planned. Salma Hayek, Vincent Cassel,  Alba Rohrwacher will star in the film based loosely on Giambattista Basile's Tale of Tales, and is described as "a giant fresco of the baroque period, told through stories of three sovereigns ruling under different dynasties." [Cineuropa]

* We haven't seen anything from director Lee Tamahori since 2011's The Devil's Double, but now he's back and set to helm Emperor with Adrien Brody starring. He'll play Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, "trying to hold together a fragmented Empire, in a 16th century world of wealth, debauchery, violent retaliations, sex, manipulation and treason."  The Devil's Double scribe Michael Thomas III penned the first draft while Jeffrey Hatcher (The Duchess) giving it a rewrite.  [Deadline]

Hear Vin Diesel's Groot in New 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Trailer

By the time Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters it will be the fourth Marvel movie of the summer, and arguably the one with the most questions surrounding it. Can a team only the most die-hard fanboy has heard of be the centerpiece of a new franchise? How will the quirky intergalactic comedy mesh with the rest of Marvel's successful Avengers flicks? And what about the unproven cast of Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and Dave Bautista? Will audiences be too tired of superhero flicks to turn up?

Those questions aren't going anywhere but now, after a weekend full of teasers, a new full trailer has been released. This one proves just how in-sync writer/director James Gunn is with fans in that he gives them everything they expect from the Guardians of the Galaxy. Not only do we get Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper) itching for a fight, but we finally get to hear Vin Diesel's "I am Groot!!" Plus there's the romantic tension between Star-Lord and Gamora, silly hijinks, crazy aliens, plus Glenn Close (!!!) sporting a wild haircut. Yep, this looks like fun.

Guardians of the Galaxy opens August 1st.

Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly will Keep America Safe as 'Border Guards'

While a Step Brothers sequel remains a pipe dream, and there don't appear to be any Talladega Nights follow-ups on the way, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly are finding new ways to work together, which is to all of our benefit. The duo are set to join Adam McKay for Border Guards, a comedy that puts them in the unlikely position of America's protectors. We're all doomed.

Ferrell and McKay will produce with the latter eying the director's chair for the film penned by Jesse Armstrong, Oscar-nominated writer of In the Loop. And this has the potential for the same level of biting satire. Ferrell and Reilly play hapless friends who decide to do something with their lives by defending the U.S. border from illegal immigrants. In the process they wind up getting stuck in Mexico without identification, and must sneak back across the border into the U.S.

Reilly recently had a brief but awesome cameo in Anchorman 2, and anything that gets these guys together is a good thing. No word on when filming on Border Guards begins, but hopefully it will be soon. [Deadline]

Norman Reedus Joins 'Triple Nine'; Shia LaBeouf Exits 'Rock the Kasbah'; John C. Reilly Nets 'The Lobster'

* Fresh off The Walking Dead scoring the highest season finale ratings in the show's history, Norman Reedus aka Daryl Dixon is joining the all-star cast of John Hillcoat's Triple Nine. He'll be starring alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor, Casey Affleck, Teresa Palmer, Gal Gadot, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Winslet, Aaron Paul, Woody Harrelson, and Michael Pena in the cop thriller penned by Matt Cook. Affleck plays a rookie cop targeted by a group of dirty cops blackmailed by the mob into committing a near-impossible heist. For the plan to work they need to create a '999', police code for a downed officer, to distract from their illegal activities. No word on Reedus' role, but this is already one of the most anticipated films of 2015. [Deadline]

* Well, now that unpredictable Shia LaBeouf won't get a chance to screw up Barry Levinson's comedy, Rock the Kasbah. Perhaps that whole retirement thing is true (wouldn't bet on it, though) because he's dropped out of the film, which has a pretty stellar cast consisting of Bill Murray, Zooey Deschanel, Danny McBride, Bruce Willis, and Kate Hudson. Perhaps Shia didn't feel comfortable being at the bottom of the bill? He was set to play half of a military duo in the film about a washed-up rock manager stranded in Kabul who discovers a new singing talent on the reality show, Afghan Star. Filming is set to begin in June so there's plenty of time to recast Shia's role. [THR]

* As shooting kicks off on Yorgos Lanthimos' (Dogtooth) next feature, The Lobster, the cast surrounding Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Ben Whishaw, and Lea Seydoux has been rounded out. John C. Reilly, Ashley Jensen (Extras), and Jessica Barden (Hanna) have joined the ensemble, set in a dystopian future and follows "a desperate man who breaks with the rules of The City where single people are arrested and obliged to find a matching mate in 45 days at The Hotel. If they fail, they are transformed into an animal of their choosing and released into The Woods."

First Trailer for 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Gets Obscene

There's no other way to put it, really: Guardians of the Galaxy is Marvel's riskiest gamble yet. The team of misfit intergalactic heroes aren't generally known by those who don't read comics on a regular basis, and the cast is an odd assortment of supporting players thrust into leads. But for all of that, the film also looks like Marvel's most unabashedly weird and fun yet. And how could it not be with a gun-wielding raccoon and giant tree creature as part of the team?

The first trailer has finally arrived, and it's definitely not intended to be taken seriously. Chris Pratt is Star-Lord, the team's goofball team leader, giving the actor a chance to be an action star while putting his comedic gifts ("Obscene Gesture Alert!") to good use. Zoe Saldana plays the green-skinned warrior Gamora, WWE superstar Dave Bautista is Drax the Destroyer, but what people really want to see are Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel as Groot and Rocket Raccoon. Fortunately, you get plenty of both in this footage, as well as a good deal of John C. Reilly as a Rhomann Dey of the Nova Corps.

This is essentially the same footage Marvel premiered at Comic-Con, only with the visual effects well in place. Those who are familiar with director James Gunn's prior work (The Specials, Slither, Super) will recognize the offbeat tone right away.

Guardians of the Galaxy launches on August 1st, and if it does well a sequel could be on the way.

John C. Reilly Confirmed as Rhomann Dey in 'Guardians of the Galaxy'

I'm hard pressed to find another superhero movie production more fascinating than Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. With every announcement the film gets more offbeat and flat out weird than before, sometimes giving the impression that casting decisions are made by throwing darts at an array of photos. One of the more interesting rumors emerged a month ago when John C. Reilly was targeted for the role of Nova Corps leader, Rhomann Dey, and now Deadline confirms him for it.

The Nova Corps are essentially intergalactic space cops, not unlike the Green Lantern Corps, which would make Rhomann Dey sort of like GL's Abin Sur. At least that's who he is in the comics, granting his Nova powers to the human Rich Rider just before dying. But previous reports suggests that his cinematic incarnation will be different, described as the Agent Coulson of the Guardians movies, who also has a human liaison on Earth. Marvel had been looking at Alan Rickman, Hugh Laurie, or Ken Watanabe for that liaison role, assuming nothing has changed in the last few weeks.

Directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy opens on August 1st 2014 and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Glenn Close, Michael Rooker, Lee Pace, Ophelia Lovibond, Benicio Del Toro, and Karen Gillan.

Marvel eyes John C. Reilly for 'Guardians of the Galaxy' as plot details emerge

When Marvel's Kevin Feige began talking about adding the quirky team of intergalactic heroes known as the Guardians of the Galaxy to their cinematic universe, it signaled a definite change in tone and scope. The film is shaping up to be wildly ambitious, and the opening salvo in what could be many set in the outer reaches of deep space. As production gears up, the cast is still being finalized and the many offbeat story threads tied together, and now we're learning details on how Marvel plans to bring the action from the comics to the silver screen.

According to HitFix, the character Rhomann Dey will be a major part of the story, but not quite like he was in the comics. Dey is essentially like the Abin Sur character in the Green Lantern mythos. He was a leader in the elite Nova Corps, who after crashing on Earth and near death, chose the human Rich Rider to become the new Nova. Marvel has made an offer to John C. Reilly to play the part, and if he does it will essentially make him the "Agent Coulson" of the 'Guardians' team. Basically, the character has been completely retooled to be the human go-between, informing SHIELD of their various activities.

Does this mean that we can expect to see Nova in the film? Not exactly, but we do already expect to see the Nova Corps in there somewhere, although it's unclear in what capacity.  What's more, Dey is expected to have a peer or liaison on Earth, and the names being kicked around for the role are Alan Rickman, Hugh Laurie, and Ken Watanabe. So basically someone commanding with an international flavor.

Chris Pratt may have seemed like an unlikely choice to play Peter Quill aka Star-Lord, the team's leader, but Marvel have plans for him to be their new Robert Downey Jr. Quill isn't the billionaire playboy that Tony Stark is, but he's funny, heroic, and has a way with the ladies (alien or otherwise), all traits Pratt should be more than able to fill.

We've heard Zoe Saldana talking quite a bit about her role as the green-skinned warrior, Gamora, but HitFix suggests she has yet to fully commit to the role. If that's true, then it's probably just a matter of time. Like practically every member of the team, Gamora has a strong connection to Thanos, and it sounds like they are making some small changes to tie her in even more. In the film version, she is the last of her kind after Thanos wiped out her planet when she was an infant (in the comics it was the alien Badoon who did it). Raised and trained by Thanos to be a superhuman blade-wielding warrior in his service, she eventually turned on him when his evil nature became clear.

Drax, who will be played by ex-WWE star Dave Bautisa, seems to be virtually unchanged. He was still a saxophone player on Earth named Art Douglas who was killed by Thanos in the Mojave Desert. His spirit is then taken by the Titan known as Kronos and placed within a powerful new body and christened Drax the Destroyer, whose only purpose is to destroy Thanos.

The CG characters like Rocket Raccoon and Groot will have major parts to play as well. We can expect to run into Rocket and his first mate Wal Russ, a talking walrus of course, as they are guards in the intergalactic Keystone Quadrant, an asylum for the mentally insane. Groot's actions on Earth will put him in the crosshairs of a familiar face, one Nick Fury, who convinces the plant creature not to experiment on humans but to become their protector instead.  If Fury's around, the door is definitely open to see other characters from previous films.

Just because the bulk of the cast is associated with Thanos does not make him the villain of the piece. Instead, it looks like it will Michael Rooker as Yondu, who in the comics was a founding member of the original Guardians of the Galaxy squad from the far-flung future. He's billed as being some sort of space pirate, which doesn't exactly fit, so there may some major reworking of his character being done for the benefit of the film.

Perhaps most intriguing of all is Lee Pace, who came aboard in a mystery role a few months ago. He's set to play a villain, at least at the early stages of the story, but will eventually switch over to the side of good. All of this would be in the setting up of his own spinoff film, which makes the question of his character's identity all the more interesting. Could he be the all-powerful Adam Warlock, who began as an evil creation but was transformed by the power of the Infinity Gems, Thanos' weapon of choice? It would seem to make sense from a storyline standpoint, but it's unlikely that Adam Warlock would be considered spinoff material.  So what about Vance Astro, otherwise known as Major Victory? He was a member of the same Guardians team as Yondu, and would later become a member of the modern day version, utilizing Captain America's shield and adopting a similar attitude. The most obvious choice, though, is that Pace would be playing Mar-Vell, the superhero known as Captain Marvel. One of Marvel's most iconic characters, his involvement would lead pretty easily to the introduction of Carol Danvers aka Ms. Marvel, who many expect to be part of The Avengers 2 in some capacity.

Having worked on three Marvel movies already, the duo of Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have come on to do a final touch up on the script. So...Nova....Nick Fury...spinoffs...Guardians of the Galaxy is shaping up to be a huge, unpredictable new chapter in Marvel's cinematic gameplan. We'll see how it all comes together on August 1st 2014.
