Review: 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and Bradley Cooper

It's hard to imagine that this run of Marvel Studios dominance has only been going on for six years. Think about that for a moment. In that short amount of time they have completely revolutionized the way Hollywood works, and established comic book movies as the new standard by which blockbusters are measured. But in 2008 when this all began with Iron Man, the characters Marvel still held the rights to weren't that big of a deal. Certainly they weren't on the level of Spider-Man or the X-men. Clearly, that has changed in the years since but Marvel's shining achievement may be what they have been able to accomplish with Guardians of the Galaxy, an odd assortment of unknown heroes that may be poised to overtake The Avengers as today's most popular super-team.

One of the great things about Marvel's films is their combination of action, operatic drama, and humor, but Guardians of the Galaxy is the first that leans heaviest on laughs; fitting for the offbeat mind of writer/director James Gunn. Gunn, who has ventured into the world of superheroes before with The Specials and Super, has done what many thought would be extremely difficult if not impossible; expand the Marvel universe into the far reaches of space while still making it feel cohesive as ever. With its quirky humor, weirdly lovable characters, and eclectic soundtrack, there is no other Marvel film quite like Guardians of the Galaxy. Once that may have seemed like a reason for worry, but it turns out to be a very good thing.

With a tone set somewhere between Star Wars and Joss Whedon's Firefly, the film begins in 1988 when a young Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) witnesses the death of his mother, and fleeing to get distance from the emotional pain is suddenly abducted by a space ship. Now older and going by the ridiculous name of Star-Lord, Quill has been working alongside his abductors, a group of intergalactic scavengers led by Yondu (Michael Rooker). Well, he had been working with them before betraying them to collect the reward on a mysterious McGuffin orb that has attracted the attention of some unsavory folks.

One of those folks is the green-skinned assassin Gamora (Zoe Saldana), who has also betrayed her family by turning her back on half-sister Nebula (Karen Gillan) and their fanatical employer, Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace). Ronan is willing to tear the universe to shreds in order to find the orb and appease his boss, the mad villain Thanos (voiced by Josh Brolin), who happens to be Gamora's "father". As if that wasn't bad enough, Yondu has put a bounty on Yondu's head, which forces a disastrous encounter with gun-obsessed raccoon Rocket and walking tree creature Groot (voiced by Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel). Captured by the universal police force known as the Nova Corps (with John C. Reilly and Glenn Close turning in memorable performances), they are thrown into a space prison where they crash headlong into inmate Drax the Destroyer (WWE superstar Dave Bautista), an alien fueled by rage for Ronan and Thanos.

So what you have is a seemingly incompatible, rag-tag group of loners forced together by circumstance and mutual enemies, and if that sounds like The Avengers and Star Wars all rolled into one then you're right. Clearly both were influences in some manner but Gunn and co-writer Nicole Perlman give the film its own signature voice to stand out from the pack. Bruce Banner may call the Avengers a "ticking time bomb" but the Guardians are that on a galactic level, and part of the fun is how these characters' personalities hilariously clash as they rocket from one breakneck battle to the next. The laughs and action never slow down for a moment and what is a two-hour film feels like half that by the time it's over.

There are a lot of balls in the air for Gunn to juggle and while the plot is a bit messy he skillfully steers his first major blockbuster effort. Each of the Guardians get their moment to shine, but a superstar has truly been made in Chris Pratt, the funnyman who was probably the least likely yet the most perfect choice to play the irreverent Star-Lord. Fans have obviously taken to Rocket and Groot, two extremely popular characters in the comics who are now going to be very popular with moviegoers. You'd be hard-pressed to even know that was Cooper's voice, while Diesel's job is tougher than people will care to admit. Sure, Groot's single "I am Groot" phrasing is repetitive but there is nuance there for those who listen out for it....and it makes for some great gags. His performance will remind many of his soulful voice work on The Iron Giant. Bautista admirably channels much of the rage and aggression he employs in WWE rings to the role of Drax, while Saldana is probably the most experienced at playing grim and bad ass. She kind of gets the short end of the stick character-wise but Gamora is an important character with the closest ties to Thanos, and she should be more important in future movies. Speaking of Thanos, you can sense a straining to fit him into this story simply because he's going to be the big bad guy down the line. It should have been much easier considering his beef with practically every single member of the Guardians, but instead pushing him into the background leads to some awkwardly irrelevant scenes that diminish him as a universal threat. Ronan proves to be a mostly unimpressive villain, too, and his quasi-religious rantings don't hold much weight as a result. And despite a rousing, crowd-pleasing finale full of awesome aerial dogfights and beautifully choreographed fight sequences, the lack of a compelling enemy really hurts.

Fortunately, the team is so engaging and diverse that we just want to hang out with them, anyway. Guardians of the Galaxy takes us to a vibrant, dangerous, and funny corner of the Marvel universe that we've never seen before, and by the time the film comes to an end you'll be eager for a return visit.

 Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Kit Harington and Andy Samberg Serve Up '7 Days in Hell'; Allison Williams is Peter Pan

Being a part of the HBO family comes with many perks. Not only are you a frequent target for Emmy nominations, but it also leads to some pretty big opportunities outside of the network. And now we're seeing two members of the HBO fam taking on new projects, one that sounds potentially awesome and another that could be disaster in the waiting.

First up, Game of Thrones star Kit Harington will team up with Andy Samberg for the star-studded tennis mockumentary, 7 Days in Hell. Check out the cast being assembled for this one: Fred Armisen, Lena Dunham, Will Forte, Karen Gillan, Howie Mandel, Soledad O’Brien (!!!), Michael Sheen, Mary Steenburgen and Oscar nominee June Squibb. Samberg and Murray Miller developed the story with Miller writing the script, and it follows two fierce tennis rivals during an epic 7-day match at Wimbledon. SNL's Jake Szymanski is directing. [Deadline]

And then there's Allison Williams, who plays vocally-challenged wannabe singer Marnie Michaels on Girls. She'll kind of get her wish in a sense as Williams has agreed to play the boy who wouldn't grow up in NBC's Peter Pan Live. She'll sing and dance alongside Christopher Walken as Captain Hook, and hopefully this won't be as terrible as their live version of The Sound of Music. Ratings be damned, that thing sucked.

'Guardians of the Galaxy' Character Posters Feature Villains Nebula, Ronan, and Korath

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy continues the ramp up to next month's debut, and following yesterday's reveal of three new character posters for some of the supporting cast, today sees the villains getting their time in the spotlight. The images feature Djimon Hounsou as Korath, he of the infamous "Who?" we've seen in a thousand trailers and TV spots, Karen Gillan as Nebula, and Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser. With the exception of Hounsou everyone here is virtually unrecognizable, a credit to the Marvel make-up team.

Directed by James Gunn and starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Josh Brolin, and Benicio Del Toro, Guardians of the Galaxy opens August 1st.

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team – the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits – Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand – with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” is presented by Marvel Studios. The film releases August 1, 2014, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

New 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Extended Trailer, Photos, and More

Today is turning out to be a big one for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. By now thousands of eager Marvelites have had a chance to attend a 17-minute preview of the film, three weeks before it hits theaters. And James Gunn has hit Facebook to announce that he's wrapped up post production and is getting ready to start spreading the word about the space-faring adventure...

Gunn: ”Well, other than finalizing the 3D, I’m officially wrapped on Guardians of the Galaxy and on my way to the airport to fly to Singapore to begin the press wing of this journey. I saw some amazing VFX shots today to wraps things up. I couldn’t be feeling more gratitude and love for all the people who have helped create this film. However the audiences take it, there’s not a single dishonest or impure bone in Guardians’ cinematic body – and that’s a hell of a thing for a spectacle film of this size with so many people involved. Best experience of my life. Thank you all.”

Marvel is jumping into the marketing in another way, as well, by releasing a ton of new photos (some via Empire) and an extended trailer with plenty footage we've never seen. The photos give us a look at Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, and Lee Pace as villain Ronan the Accuser. We also get a glimpse at Ronan's ship, the Dark Aster, not to mention John C. Reilly and Glenn Close as members of the Nova Corp and Michael Rooker as Yondu.

Guardians of the Galaxy opens August 1st.

Karen Gillan, John Travolta, Ethan Hawke, and Taissa Farmiga Join 'In A Valley of Violence'

One of the keys to the small-budget success of Blumhouse Productions, beyond just selecting genre films that are inexpensive and have wide appeal, is their penchant for perfect casting. We've seen the success they've had with Ethan Hawke on The Purge and Sinister, doing well enough that both have sequels on the way. And now as horror maven Ti West prepares his next film, In A Valley of Violence, Blumhouse is again turning to Hawke and another repeat castmember to fill out the cast.

Hawke is set to lead In A Valley of Violence and he'll be joined by Karen Gillan, who recently starred in Blumhouse horror, Oculus. Also coming aboard are John Travolta and Taissa Farmiga (The Bling Ring) in what is being described as a revenge Western. Hawke will play a drifter with nothing to lose by seeking revenge on the thugs who killed his friend. Farmiga and Gillan are sisters running the town hotel and help Hawke's character with his plan. Nothing on Travolta's character yet but we have to assume he's one of the villains, right?

West's latest film, The Sacrament, opens in June which is when In A Valley of Violence begins shooting. Gillan will be seen next in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy as Nebula. [Deadline]

Review: Oculus starring Karen Gillan and Brenton Thwaites

For every ten standard horror films there’s one that breaks the mold, these are your SCREAMs and A Nightmare on Elm Street (believe it or not that movie was pretty groundbreaking when it came out).  I’m not saying Oculus is on the level of those genre-changing films but it’s definitely right up there. On the surface you have a movie about an evil mirror that kills those who look on it, past that you have a movie that seriously treads the line on “Is this all just a figment of a disturbed imagination?” Let’s do some plot, Alan Russell (Rory Cochran) buys a mirror without checking the provenance, which would have told him the prior owners had a nasty nack for dying badly. What follows is a long bit of “All Work and No Play Make Alan GO CRAZY” leading up to the sound of some shots going off and Alan and his wife Marie (Katee Sackoff) dead and all things looking like Alan just went nuts. Their children, Tim and Kaylie, are both shipped off to different places with Tim going to a mental institution after receiving the blame for his father’s death. After he is released Tim (Brenton Thwaites) meets up with his sister Kaylie (Karen Gillan). Tim has spent years learning that the mirror was only a creation of his mind to deal with his father’s descent into madness, while Kaylie has been able to focus her time directly into believing in an evil mirror.

This is where the film really takes off, horror movies always play with the idea that “It’s all in your head”, but usually it’s in the form of some distrusting authority figures who we’re not supposed to take seriously, this movie has one of the main characters casting doubt. If that doesn’t make the water murky enough the trip results in the telling of the back story intercut with real time in such a way that the two begin to overlap and we really do begin to question the motive of the movie. The non-linear storyline is a touch that really makes you feel what the characters are feeling, it pulls you in to such a jarring state that you can understand the heights they are willing to go to and that they are having a hard time trusting their own eyes. Isn’t that everyone’s deepest fear, really? To not be able to trust your own senses knowing that you’re so sure of something but there’s an outside chance that you may just be losing your mind.  That’s a downright amazing touch right there…because it’s only when you feel truly safe that you can be properly scared.

This sounds like a very non-traditional horror movie, where are the scares? Don’t worry about that, there are more than enough creepy faces where there shouldn’t be and standard jump scares as well…but done in the right way. I’ve really found that jump scares are a necessity in horror films but you have to do them properly, in a not completely obvious way. Honestly though, it’s the psychological impact of Oculus that will leave you with the lights on, not the cheap scares.

I think Oculus, while not for everybody, is a must for all fans of the horror genre. This flick is the next in a progression of smarter horror films like Drag Me To Hell, or Cabin in the Woods. There is so much more to the film than I’ve even listed here, for the sanctity of spoiler-free, but as you slowly find yourself learning the truth of what happened that night you only go further down the rabbit hole. You’ll want to come back for more which, box office depending, was left wide open in the most clichéd part of the film…the final shot sequel establisher!

First 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Clip; Zoe Saldana and Karen Gillan Clash in Set Image

For months, the common wisdom has been that Guardians of the Galaxy would be Marvel's most challenging film to market yet. The team has no recognizable characters, an unproven lead in Chris Pratt, and there seems to be little connection to The Avengers members many are familiar with. Now that we've seen three straight Marvel movies break records and hit franchise highs, any concerns we may be on the verge of a let-down are disappearing, and a large part of the reason are clips like this one.

MTV has released what is sort of a trailer-clip combo, beginning with a look at the familiar scene between Chris Pratt's Star-Lord and Djimon Hounsou's Korath. From there it's a mash-up of action footage featuring the "bunch of a-holes".

Is there any way this film wasn't a blast for everyone to make? In fact, they're having so much fun that James Gunn has called the cast back in for some additional shooting, and part of that involves a major fight scene between Zoe Saldana's Gamora and Nebula, played by Karen Gillan. Gunn hit Instagram to give fans a look at the two ladies preparing for battle.
Guardians of the Galaxy opens August 1st.

Beware the Killer Mirror in New Trailer and Poster for Horror 'Oculus'

A few years ago there was a mid-level horror film called Mirrors, that rang up a pretty decent box office on the strength of its cast led by Kiefer Sutherland and Paula Patton. It wasn't especially memorable, but the one thing it did right was impart a valuable lesson that mirrors are not to be trifled with, and it has nothing to do with seven years of bad luck. But apparently that message wasn't learned by everybody, which is why movies like Oculus exist.

A new trailer, poster, and a handful of photos have been released for Oculus, a horror which generated some solid buzz among the TIFF midnight crowd. Directed by Mike Flanagan with Karen Gillan, Brenton Thwaites, Rory Cochrane and Katee Sackhoff starring, the film centers on siblings whose lives were ruined by a malevolent force unleashed through an antique mirror. Some folks never learn.

Oculus will hit up SXSW soon before opening in theaters April 11th.

New 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Photos Offer Look at Benicio Del Toro as The Collector

Late last night Marvel finally dropped the first, hilariously weird trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy, and it seems they may have another big franchise on their hands, assuming earlier rumors are true. Now a handful of new photos have been released that give us a look at a ripped Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as the fierce warrior (and villain Thanos' adopted daughter) Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, plus the CG-duo of Rocket Racoon (he's not actually a raccoon) and Groot voiced by Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel. Plus, Benicio Del Toro dons some crazy hair and fur as The Collector, and Karen Gillan goes blue as Nebula, who in the comics claims to be Thanos' granddaughter.  Something tells me there will be some family rivalry between her and Gamora.

Guardians of the Galaxy opens on August 1st.
