Review: 'The Immigrant' Starring Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix, and Jeremy Renner

The American Dream isn't so much hopeful as it is ugly and costly in James Gray's bleak and mildly affecting period drama, The Immigrant, a film that boasts a stellar cast doing top notch performances. Gray, who directed the melancholy Two Lovers and crime stories like We Own the Night and The Yards, paints a bleak picture of America in the 1920s, a time when immigrants were arriving on our shores by the droves, wrapped in the embracing shadow of the Statue of Liberty. This is how Gray's film begins, when that promise of a brighter future still burns, only to be extinguished in ugly and melodramatic fashion.

Marion Cotillard is Ewa, a Polish immigrant arriving in America along with her sickly sister, Magda. When Magda is taken away due to her illness, Ewa is left alone to fend for herself. But with reports from the ship claiming she is a woman of loose morals, the threat of deportation looms. Joaquin Phoenix is the instantly-shady Bruno, who arrives in the nick of time and just happens to be able to get Ewa out of her predicament. He smiles the smile of a wolf, but she is too desperate and naive to notice, at least initially. Ewa is a survivor, that much is clear, and she'll do anything to secure her future and rescue Magda. Unfortunately, Bruno recognizes that, too, and soon forces her into his employ as a prostitute.

But there's more to Bruno than just wanting to cash in on her beauty. He's fallen in love with her, yet still has no problem pimping her to his rich clients. It's another complicated and tightly-wound performance by Phoenix, who seems to find newly dark corners of the human psyche with every turn. Bruno is jealous and dismissive, quick to violence and to comfort; he values her as possession but not as a person, while all Ewa wants is escape. She finds a potential lifeline with the arrival of Orlando (Jeremy Renner), a spirited magician and Bruno's estranged cousin. The rivalry between both men ignites quickly and threatens to consume everything Ewa has been degrading herself for.

Co-written by Gray and the late Ric Menello, the high-wire script is best when exploring the volatile dynamic between Ewa and Bruno, which is probably more hate-hate than love-hate. The late arrival of Orlando into the mix is just one of many contrived developments that sap the film of its energy and distract from a great opportunity to really dig into an ugly and rarely discussed corner of American history. Cotillard can say more with her expressive eyes than others can with their entire bodies, and she gives more depth to Ewa than the screenplay provides.  Forgiveness and redemption are the themes at play here, seen through the lens of characters who have known neither for too long. There's little room for faith or hope in Gray's version of America, the gloom captured in disheartening tones by cinematographer Darius Khondjil. Gray's willingness to indulge in that dreariness prevents The Immigrant from being all that should be.

New U.S. Trailer for 'The Immigrant' with Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Renner, and Joaquin Phoenix

It's crazy to think that six years have passed since James Gray's vastly underrated Two Lovers, and in that time there has been a definite void left by his absence. Last spring he returned to Cannes with the star-studded period drama, The Immigrant, receiving mixed reviews and what looked like a VOD release from Weinstein. But fortunes have changed; a proper theatrical release is on the way and now a domestic trailer to go along with it.

Starring Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Renner, and Joaquin Phoenix, this look at the American Dream follows a polish immigrant (Cotillard) who arrives in this country with her sister only to be left alone. In desperate straits, she's forced into prostitution by the charismatic Bruno (Phoenix), until a suave magician (Renner) offers her a way out. The historical trappings are richly detailed and the performances seem dead on, as one might expect from this cast, so it's a wonder why there has been so little buzz.

The Immigrant gets a limited release on May 12th.

International Trailer for 'The Immigrant' with Joaquin Phoenix, Marion Cotillard, and Jeremy Renner

For a film that boasts the talents of Joaquin Phoenix, Marion Cotillard, and Jeremy Renner we've heard surprisingly little about James Gray's The Immigrant. The roaring period piece debuted at Cannes to strong reviews, as one might expect, and when it was snatched up by The Weinstein Company the thought was it would be a sure entry into the Oscar season. However, that didn't happen and the film will instead open next spring when it will likely fly under the radar. It's unfortunate, because the new NSFW trailer is exquisite.

After some stirring words about the American Dream, the 1920-set film then begins to show why our shores aren't always so inviting. Marion Cotillard is Ewa, a Polish immigrant who arrives with her sister, only to be left alone and stranded. Desperate to be reunited with her sister, she falls under the sway of Bruno (Phoenix) and is forced into prostitution. Renner is Bruno's cousin Orlando, a suave magician (hence the heavy guy-liner) who may be Ewa's only hope for a better life.

The Immigrant opens in France next month and is expected to arrive here next spring. Fingers crossed.

New clip from James Gray's 'The Immigrant' with Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix, and Jeremy Renner

It's been five years since Cannes favorite James Gray last hit the festival with his searing romance, Two Lovers, and now he's making up for lost time in a big way. Along with co-writing Guillaume Canet's star-studded crime film, Blood Ties, tomorrow sees the debut of Gray's period drama, The Immigrant, starring Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix, and Jeremy Renner. Not too shabby.

The 1920s-set story features Cotillard as Ewa Cybulski, a Polish immigrant who arrives at Ellis Island with her sister in search of the American Dream. Separated from her sibling and alone in the mean streets of Manhattan, Ewa falls victim to Bruno (Phoenix) a seemingly nice man who forces her into a life of prostitution. Renner plays Bruno's cousin, Orlando, who may be her only chance for salvation.  The first clip has appeared and looks to be of Ewa and Bruno's first meeting, captured beautifully in a vintage, sepia hue.

The Weinstein Company snapped up the rights awhile ago, and will likely drop it into the thick of the Oscar season.
