First Clip from Atom Egoyan's Cannes Entry 'The Captive' Starring Ryan Reynolds

Looking to bounce back from the lukewarm response to Devil's Knot (my thoughts weren't mixed at all), Atom Egoyan is showing up at Cannes with his next film, The Captive, which will be in competition at the festival. Ryan Reynolds, who could use a bit of bouncing back himself, stars as the father to a kidnapped girl, with the film following how it destroys not only his life but of those involved.

This clip takes place immediately before the kidnapping, showing father and daughter happily poking fun at one another while driving through a foreboding snowstorm.  It's hard to escape the Prisoners vibe coming through on this one, and this may be the comeback film Egoyan has been looking for. Mireille Enos, Rosario Dawson, Alexia Fast, Kevin Durand, Scott Speedman, and Bruce Greenwood co-star. Check out the clip below along with some new images and a poster.

Review: 'Devil's Knot' Starring Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth

The story of the West Memphis Three has garnered a ton of media attention over the last two decades, and for good reason. It's a classic mix of elements that attract news outlets like bees to honey: murder, satanic cults, corruption, miscarriages of justice, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Since the murdered bodies of three young boys were discovered in an Alabama creek twenty years ago, the case has become a "cause celebre" due to the apparent false imprisonment of accused murderers Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley Jr. and Jason Baldwin, seemingly railroaded by a system and town swept up in hysterics. The story was chronicled fully in three incredible Paradise Lost documentaries and the Peter Jackson-produced West of Memphis, leaving little room for Atom Egoyan's narrative feature Devil's Knot to forge its own path.

Given the wealth of material already out there about the West Memphis Three case, Egoyan's decision to take on a dramatic interpretation of events is a mystery. It's a no-win scenario if there ever was one. Get it right and people will say the film basically wrote itself; get it wrong and you get Devil's Knot, which is flimsy, unnecessary, and manages to turn a compelling true story into something dull.

There doesn't seem to be much that co-writers Scott Derrickson (of Sinister fame) and Paul Boardman have done other than take what we already know and get A-listers like Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth to reenact it. Witherspoon takes on the role of Pam Hobbs, who one normal day in 1993 allows her son Steve to go out and play with his friends, warning him to be back in time for her to get to work. But when the boy doesn't show up, it begins a firestorm of rage and accusations that consume this small, devout Southern town. Not that you really get a sense of all that as the film focuses mainly on Hobbs and Colin Firth as southern investigator Ron Lax, who Damien Echols described as a bit player in the whole ordeal. Actually, Echols has been pretty open in his disdain for the movie and it's pretty easy to see why. In overly sentimental, movie-of-the-week fashion it skips over crucial details in the case; particularly troubling when one thinks how a lack of attention to detail is largely what doomed Echols, Jessie Misskelley, and Jason Baldwin to serve years behind bars for a crime they likely didn't commit.

And so what we get is a thumbnail version of events and the players involved. Firth's Lax is particularly underserved, and the actor struggles to find anything to do with him. If he's truly "obsessed" over the case and making sure the accused go free, then why don't we ever see that passion? Instead we get characters, including the usually-amazing Amy Ryan as his ex-wife, talking at us about it. We get such an idealized, perfectly home-spun version of Hobbs that Witherspoon is left with nothing to do but be sad. There's a lot more to Hobbs' part of this story than this film is willing to portray, and the same goes for her skeevy husband Terry Hobbs (Alessandro Nivola), who in reality DNA evidence fingers as being involved in the murders. But the film tip-toes around that issue and in anything that steers too far away from a narrow and incomplete narrative that only encompass a small piece of a much larger canvas. Dane DeHaan is sorely wasted as a key witness, joined by other top actors who flit in and out without leaving much impact; Mireille Enos, Kevin Durand, Stephen Moyer, and Bruce Greenwood among others. Each of their characters is as thinly drawn as the dubious circumstances surrounding the police investigation, which was driven by religious zealotry, political gamesmanship, and flat-out ignorance.

There just doesn't seem to be much of a reason for this film to exist. It literally says nothing new and what it does say is poorly executed. The film ends with a lousy update that tells us everything that happened with the case over the years, but it only serves to highlight how unfinished Devil's Knottruly is. If someone is looking for a better, far more compelling walkthrough of the unbelievable West Memphis Three story, either hit Wikipedia or rent one of the documentaries instead.

Christopher Plummer to 'Remember'; Dakota Fanning Leads 'Brain on Fire'; Connie Britton Joins 'American Ultra'

* Screen vets Christopher Plummer, Dean Norris, Bruno Ganz, and Martin Landau have joined Atom Egoyan's latest film, Remember. Egoyan's follow-up to the disappointing West Memphis Three film, Devil's Knot, is a thriller "in which the darkest chapter of modern history collides with a contemporary mission of revenge." Vague enough for you? [THR]

* Charlize Theron is set to produce an adaptation of Susannah Cahalan's memoir, Brain On Fire: My Month Of Madness, with Dakota Fanning place to star. The story chronicles 24-year-old Cahalan's month-long descent into madness at a hospital, until a new doctor discovered the illness that was attacking her brain. [Deadline]

* It's Sharon Stone out, Connie Britton in for the action-comedy, American Ultra. Production began last month on the film which stars Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart as a stoner couple whose lives are turned upside down when it's discovered he is really a highly-trained sleeper agent in a secret government program. Britton will play Victoria Lasseter, the creator of the program. Directed by Nima Nourizadeh, the film also stars Topher Grace, Walton Goggins, Tony Hale, John Lequizamo, and Bill Pullman.

First Trailer for Atom Egoyan's 'The Captive' Starring Ryan Reynolds

A few years ago Ryan Reynolds had everything at his fingertips. Hot new DC Comics movie franchise, blockbuster films all lined up, and even a couple of buzzworthy indies. And then it all disappeared and Reynolds has kind of slipped into the background. But he may be on the way back, with a notable change-of-pace role in Marjane Satrapi's The Voices debuting at Sundance, and next he'll hit Cannes for Atom Egoyan's The Captive.

As Cannes continues to reveal footage from their full slate of films, the first trailer for The Captive is among them. The dark and foreboding film, reminiscent of last year's Prisoners, centers on a man dealing with the kidnapping of his young daughter, and how her disappearance leads to the destruction of everything around him. This is pretty tough material, and judging by this Reynolds could be up to the task of handling it. He's surrounded y a talented ensemble of Mireille Enos, Rosario Dawson, Scott Speedman, Alexia Fast, and Bruce Greenwood.

New Trailer for West Memphis Three Drama 'Devil's Knot'

The story of the West Memphis Three has been told many times in multiple documentaries, but their 20-year ordeal is finally being given the narrative treatment thanks to Atom Egoyan. A new trailer has been released for Devil's Knot, a dramatic recreation of the events surrounding a small town's response to the murder of three little boys. That response included a flawed and biased judicial system that put three misfit teens behind bars for a crime they didn't commit.

Despite a cast that includes Reese Witherspoon, Colin Firth, Dane DeHaan, Mireille Enos, Amy Ryan, Stephen Moyer, and Alessandro Nivola, response to the film has been lukewarm to say the least. Part of the reason can be seen in this footage which is extremely flat and lacking the power a compelling story such as this should have. It all feels perfunctory, but maybe the performances can save it.

Devil's Knot opens on May 9th, but I'd probably just recommend Peter Jackson's amazing documentary, West of Memphis.

New Trailer for Atom Egoyan's West Memphis Three Drama, 'Devil's Knot'

From the Paradise Lost trilogy to Peter Jackson's comprehensive documentary West of Memphis, the incredible saga of the West Memphis Three has been chronicled on the big screen numerous times. And yet it seems every time the subject is approached there is something new and unbelievable to learn. Will the same hold true for Atom Egoyan's narrative take on the material, Devil's Knot?

A new trailer for the film has been released, and it certainly boasts a cast that any director would be envious of. Starring Colin Firth, Reese Witherspoon, Mireille Enos, Dane DeHaan, Amy Ryan, Stephen Moyer, and Elias Koteas, it depicts the fallout of three child murders in West Memphis, Arkansas, and the subsequent arrest of three local boys. Presumed guilty because of their pasts and "outsider" status, but also because of political and public pressure, they were quickly convicted, but the odyssey to discover the truth about what happened would take more than twenty years.

Despite all of the talent involved in front and behind the camera, the film was trounced after its Toronto premiere. That may explain why there's no firm release date yet, although it's expected Devil's Knot will open later in 2014.

First Photo and Synopsis for Atom Egoyan's 'The Captive' with Ryan Reynolds

Atom Egoyan's West Memphis Three film Devil's Knot is currently making the festival rounds, but the director already has another film wrapped and ready to go.  Egoyan gathered up Ryan Reynolds, Mireille Enos, Scott Speedman, Rosario Dawson, Alexia Fast, Bruce Greenwood, and Kevin Durand for a dark drama originally titled Queen of the Night. Now it's been retitled The Captive, and not only are we getting the first official photo, but the complete synopsis has been revealed...

MATTHEW is driving his massive logging truck and leaves his precious daughter sleeping as he ducks into roadside washroom. When he returns she is gone.
In the following years, his wife TINA visits the police station where she has formed a relationship with the detective, NICOLE. Each year on CASS’s birthday, NICOLE gives TINA a report on how the search for her missing daughter is going. Lately, the police have identified the girl on the internet, but have had no success in tracking down her physical presence. CASS has aged 8 years since her disappearance. She is being held somewhere, but what is she doing there? The disturbing nature of her “broadcasts” is gradually revealed. Can CASS use these “broadcasts” to her advantage to plan her own escape?
THE CAPTIVE is a drama about how this kidnapping destroys two relationships—that of MATTHEW AND TINA, who blames her husband for all that has happened, as well of that of NICOLE and her co-‐worker JEFFREY. NICOLE AND JEFFREY work intensely with the horrors of internet child abuse crimes from day to day. Surprisingly, they find they have a good relationship despite their horrific work and are attracted to each other. They have a strong connection until the moment when Jeffrey’s obsession with work crosses an ethical line.
Years after the kidnapping, MATTHEW is driving a truckload of nursery trees to a remote destination. On his way, he stops for an overnight stay at a motel. When he wakes the next morning his truck is gone. A single tree is left in its place. In the far distance he sees another stolen tree planted on the side of  the  road. Approaching  it,  he  sees another and another. The Trees are leading him somewhere. Is this a nightmare, or is he confronting a disturbing dream come true?
The theme of THE CAPTIVE is that great evil will not go unpunished, but the twisting nature of this evil creates an unpredictable and complex story.

It sounds like it could have the potential to have the same gut-wrenching impact of Prisoners, but as of now there's no firm release date. Perhaps we'll see it pop up at Sundance? Fingers crossed.

Sure Shots: Malin Akerman; Ryan Reynolds; 'The Hobbit'

* Ok, it's really time to start paying attention to Breacher, and stop dissing it just because it's a David Ayer-joint. Already with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sam Worthington, Joe Manganiello, Terrence Howard, and Dawn Olivieri, the cop thriller is now about to add the sexy Malin Akerman to the cast. Akerman has been steadily improving over the last couple years, hitting a new high in last year's happythankyoumoreplease, and making for a charming addition to Rock of Ages. Akerman will play a member of the DEA task force who rob a drug cartel for millions, only to get picked off one-by-one once they think things have quieted down. [Variety]

* Remember Ryan Reynolds? Hey, he's not dead yet(although his 2011 nearly finished him), and he's still someone directors seem to be keen on working with. He's got the undead cop flick, R.I.P.D coming up, and now he's set to join Atom Egoyan's next film, Queen of the Night. Reynolds will play the father whose daughter is kidnapped eight years prior. Now a series of clues point to her possibly being alive, and...well, that's the mystery, I suppose. Egoyan wrote the script along with David Fraser, with production set to begin in February. Just another thing to stand in the way of that Deadpool flick, which I'm gonna say will never happen. At least not in the form we've come to expect. Egoyan is currently shooting his West Memphis Three film, Devil's Knot.

* Back before all this trilogy stuff, the big deal surrounding The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was that Peter Jackson shot the film with a frame rate of 48fps. Revealing a few bits of footage a few months ago at Cinemacon, the response to it was...."meh". So maybe that's why Warner Brothers has made the decision to only release the 48fps version of the film on a limited basis, only hitting a small number of theaters. Honestly, most theater chains aren't equipped for it, anyway, and most people don't give a crap one way or another about frame rate. The film hits theaters on December 13th, so we should expect a list of participating theaters soon. [Variety]

'True Blood' star Stephen Moyer lands lead role in 'Devil's Knot'

The current season of True Blood hasn't been so hot, as there are just far too many characters to keep track of.  Most of them aren't even all that interesting, but Stephen Moyer's performance as vampire Bill Compton remains as wonderfully complex as ever. Hopefully he can bring a little bit of that to Atom Egoyan's Devil's Knot, which Deadline reports Moyer has just joined.

He'll be taking the lead role of prosecutor John Fogelman in the narrative take on the true story of the West Memphis Three.  The film will follow the wrongful conviction and imprisonment of Jason Baldwin, Damien Echols and Jessie Misskelley for the murder of three young boys in West Memphis, Arkansas. The film stars Reese Witherspoon, Colin Firth, Alessandro Nivola, Amy Ryan, Mireille Enos, and many more.

In order to fit it around his True Blood filming schedule, Moyer will jump into the production immediately. Expect to see Devil's Knot hit theaters in 2013.

Colin Firth to tie 'The Devil's Knot' with Reese Witherspoon

We all know how Hollywood likes to chase it's own tail sometimes. If a film is a surprising hit, then you can expect to see a number of copycats looking to cash in. It's just not often that we see it with a real life event, such as with the controversial case of the West Memphis Three. Released from prison last summer after nearly 20 years in prison, Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley, Jr. and Jason Baldwin found themselves convicted of the murders of three young boys, despite some sketchy evidence.

The Paradise Lost trilogy of films covered the investigation, trial, imprisonment, and ultimate release. Peter Jackson has his own documentary on the subject, West of Memphis, which just premiered at Sundance. Atom Egoyan(The Sweet Hereafter) is currently prepping The Devil's Knot, a narrative approach to the subject which already has Reese Witherspoon attached to star. Now Deadline reports she'll be joined by Colin Firth.

Based on the book, Devil's Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three, Colin Firth will play private investigator Ron Lax, who works on the side of Damien Echols and discovers some crucial information about his arrest and trial. Witherspoon is Pam Hobbs, the mother of one of the victims who goes from believing the accused are guilty to becoming one of the fiercest advocates of their innocence.

Egoyan is currently assisting in a rewrite of the script by Scott Derrickson and Paul Boardman, so it may still be awhile before this one kicks off. It's expected that other big names will be tapped to fill what should be a fairly large cast.

Atom Egoyan adds Reese Witherspooon to his West Memphis Three film

Even though the West Memphis Three were finally released from prison earlier this year after serving more than a decade, their story won't be leaving the spotlight anytime soon. Accused of murders many believe they didn't commit, Hollywood has already had no shortage of films both supporting their innocence and refuting it. There are more on the way, with the third Paradise Lost documentary due to appear on HBO soon. Peter Jackson is developing his own doc on the subject, as well. Atom Egoyan(The Sweet Hereafter) is prepping his own film on the subject, titled Devil's Knot, and it probably has the best shot at making it to the big screen.

Egoyan's film will be an adaptation of Mara Leveritt's book, Devil's Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three. Unlike the others, it will look less at the case itself and more on the devastating impact the crime and subsequent trials had on the community. The script was written by Scott Derrickson and Paul Boardman, with Egoyan doing his own rewrites. As for who might star? Deadline reports that Reese Witherspoon is the first to officially come aboard. She'll play Pam Hobbs, the mother of one of the victims who began to openly question the guilty verdict. In 2007 she joined those requesting the case be re-opened.

Filming is set to begin next summer, and now that Witherspoon is aboard expect there to be a lot of eyes on this one.
