Sundance Review: 'Mississippi Grind' starring Ben Mendelsohn and Ryan Reynolds

Maybe we're witnessing the rebirth of the modern gambling movie? Just weeks after Mark Wahlberg's remake of The Gambler, Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden are giving us another look at those who like to risk it all in Mississippi Grind, a film about two guys teetering on opposite ends of Lady Luck's scale. Fleck and Boden, who excelled with the Ryan Gosling-led character drama Half Nelson, won modest praise for the documentary Sugar, and were completely ignored for the underrated It's Kind of a Funny Story, have dealt out an enjoyable but not entirely successful road trip story of second chances and the fickle whims of fate.

The ever-busy Ben Mendelsohn stars as down-on-his-luck Gerry, a guy who seems basically born to lose. It's like he's got William H. Macy's character in The Cooler (another great gambling flick) hovering over his life at all times. "I'm bad with money" he admits mournfully, but there's a cheeky smile when explaining that he owes money to "everybody". His losing streak comes to an abrupt end when Curtis (Ryan Reynolds) sweeps into a poker match and wins everybody's admiration, most of all Gerry's. Who is this cool cat, anyway? Curtis is a total pariah but he's slick, charming, funny, and always seems to know the right thing to say. He's got confidence in spades, something Gerry may have once had but hasn't for a very long time. After a thinly veiled threat from his bookie (Alfre Woodard in a surprising turn), Gerry convinces Curtis to go on the grind from Mississippi to New Orleans, hitting all of the action on the way to a high-stakes finale.

While the film has elements of buddy road trip comedies, it owes a much larger debt to the shaggy dog gambling films of decades past, from California Split to James Toback's original The Gambler. To emphasize the point, Toback even shows up in a brief cameo and the scene has all of the musculature one would expect if he were writing the screenplay himself. While we see Gerry and Curtis bond on their journey, ultimately the film is about their self-destructive qualities, especially when it comes to matters of the heart. Curtis travels the country on a lark, stopping to visit the prostitute girlfriend Simone (Sienna Miller) he can't admit to loving. Meanwhile, Gerry is just a complete degenerate. At first we find his sadsack qualities somewhat endearing but that fades as he lies, cheats, and steals to feed his habit. Fleck and Boden fight to make him sympathetic again, but by the time Curtis has had enough of him it's a wonder he hadn't folded already.

The bromantic chemistry between Mendelsohn and Reynolds goes a long way, though, and the film is always worthy of our attentions. The gambling scenes have the energetic spark of high-risk action, and the dialogue runs fast and free like the spin of a roulette wheel. It's the somber, reflective moments that don't quite ring true. We keep hoping they'll find another poker tournament to enter when the guys start wallowing in their self-pity. Backed by a wonderfully bluesy soundtrack and smoky barroom cinematography, the film's aesthetic touches put you right in the moment waiting for the turn of the river and the roll of the dice.

Of course there's the promise of a huge payout at the end of Gerry and Curtis' journey, but Fleck and Boden don't seem to know when to cash out. Instead the film continues to play hand-after-hand, hitting the same themes repeatedly and passing on every natural point to wrap up. Perhaps they were waiting for the big score of a crowdpleasing finish, but it doesn't really mesh with the film's somewhat downbeat tone. Mississippi Grind has a number of strong cards in its favor but barely manages to play a winning hand.

Ryan Reynolds is a Pet-Loving Serial Killer in Trailer for 'The Voices'

For a film that got mostly positive reviews out of Sundance, Marjane Satrapi's (Persepolis) macabre comedy The Voices has been sitting around for awhile. It just goes to show the impact of the "festival bubble" where a film about a serial killer who talks to his pets can be praised, but then probably proved a challenge for Lionsgate to slot as a general release. But the film is on the way now, and with it comes a brand new trailer.

Starring Ryan Reynolds, Anna Kendrick, Gemma Arterton, and Jacki Weaver, the dark comedy centers on a mentally unstable but happy man who gets off his meds and begins hearing voices from his pet dog and cat encouraging him to be a serial killer. When he starts taking his meds again he realizes it may be too late. The trailer isn't as funny as the concept would suggest but hopefully the best and most bizarre stuff is being saved for later.

The Voices opens in theaters and VOD on February 6th.

Helen Mirren Reclaims Stolen Art in Trailer for 'Woman in Gold'

It may seem like a long time ago but early this year we saw George Clooney and a team of art enthusiasts retrieve some stolen art from the Nazis. Hitler really got around when it came to stealing some of the world's finest pieces because art world drama Woman in Gold tells a similar story.

Starring Helen Mirren, Ryan Reynolds, Katie Holmes, and Daniel Bruhl, the real-life story centers on Maria Altmann, who joined with a young lawyer to reclaim priceless art the Nazis stole from her family during WWII. At the helm is Simon Curtis, who directed My Week with Marilyn a couple of years ago, but this film doesn't seem to be taking itself quite as seriously. There's a definite Philomena vibe going on here, which is probably why The Weinstein Company is so high on it.

Woman in Gold opens April 3rd.

Ryan Reynolds to Return as Deadpool; Benedict Cumberbatch Confirmed for Doctor Strange

Marvel's cinematic tentacles stretch far and wide, to projects they control and even to some they don't. Ryan Reynolds and Benedict Cumberbatch have been circling the roles of Deadpool and Doctor Strange for awhile, years in Reynolds' case, and while it was always expected a deal would get done neither has been made official until now.

First up, Deadline reports Reynolds is signing on to star in 20th Century Fox's forever-developing solo Deadpool film directed by Tim Miller. Reynolds played the character in X-men Origins: Wolverine, but that version of Deadpool barely resembled the comic book. Nicknamed the "Merc with a Mouth",  Deadpool is a fast-talking mercenary known for cracking jokes and brutal efficiency. Stricken with cancer, Deadpool agrees to be part of the Weapon X program (same one that created Wolverine) and gains a healing factor, although it leaves his body and face scarred.  Production on the film is set to begin in March for release on February 12th 2016, so get your chimichangas ready.

And finally Benedict Cumberbatch will don the Eye of Agamotto and star as Doctor Strange, with Marvel finally making the deal official. Scott Derrickson is directing the film about Dr. Stephen Strange, a vain neurosurgeon who loses everything after a car accident and begins training in the mystic arts, ultimately becoming Marvel's "Sorcerer Supreme". Strange is expected to be a key part of Marvel's future plans, which should include the character turning up in Avengers: Infinity War. Doctor Strange opens November 4th 2016.

Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool Movie Finally Confirmed; Targets February 2016 Release

So you thought 20th Century Fox and Marvel would finally get their crap together on that Deadpool movie which has been brewing for years? You'd be forgiven for thinking that, as the film based on the popular Merc with a Mouth hasn't moved much despite Ryan Reynolds, Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and director Tim Miller championing their R-rated feature. When some test footage leaked a few months ago it only got fans salivating more, and it's largely for that reason the film is now moving forward with a February 12th 2016 release date.

Deadpool got his start in the pages of Marvel's X-force comic (that team has a movie coming, too) and back then (when I dug him most) he was a badass assassin who ran his mouth way too much. He was funny but merciless, although lately he's portrayed more as a comedy character who wants desperately to be a hero. Those unfamiliar with him will recognize Deadpool from the terrible X-men Origins: Wolverine, again portrayed by Reynolds, but that version is NOT any Deadpool fans recognize. Fortunately the one that will be seen now will be closer to the comic, meaning he'll be breaking the fourth wall and probably making fun of how badly he was portrayed before.

Will we see Deadpool as part of Bryan Singer's X-men: Apocalypse which comes out later that same year? Probably not as the Deadpool script has been out there for awhile. Then again that was before the resurgence of Fox's X-men franchise.

Amazing 'Deadpool' Film Test Footage Shows Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth

A film based on the popular Marvel character Deadpool has been in the works forever, and for one reason or another it has simply never happened. At one point the blame was placed on finding the right tone for what had to be an R-rated effort, but really that seems like a minor issue and there must be more to it. Ryan Reynolds, who played a badly-written Deadpool in X-men Origins: Wolverine, has been set to play the Merc with a Mouth since the beginning, with Tim Miller the latest attached to direct. Most recently it was X-men producer Lauren Schuler Donner who said she still really wants to make this movie happen, and now some test footage has emerged that should have Deadpool fans beating down her door to make sure she does.

The footage has simply appeared on Youtube out of nowhere but it's clearly not a fan film. For one, it has Ryan Reynolds' voice and the CGI is a little too good for your standard fan production. Basically it's Deadpool, breaking the 4th wall in typically hilarious fashion, as he takes down a few thugs in a moving car. I've always said the film that proved Reynolds would be the perfect Deadpool was his Blade: Trinity in which he played the wise-cracking Hannibal King. The tone is exactly on point in here and it looks pretty good, too, so hopefully this is what Miller and Reynolds will be giving us if/when a Deadpool movie happens.

First Clip from Atom Egoyan's Cannes Entry 'The Captive' Starring Ryan Reynolds

Looking to bounce back from the lukewarm response to Devil's Knot (my thoughts weren't mixed at all), Atom Egoyan is showing up at Cannes with his next film, The Captive, which will be in competition at the festival. Ryan Reynolds, who could use a bit of bouncing back himself, stars as the father to a kidnapped girl, with the film following how it destroys not only his life but of those involved.

This clip takes place immediately before the kidnapping, showing father and daughter happily poking fun at one another while driving through a foreboding snowstorm.  It's hard to escape the Prisoners vibe coming through on this one, and this may be the comeback film Egoyan has been looking for. Mireille Enos, Rosario Dawson, Alexia Fast, Kevin Durand, Scott Speedman, and Bruce Greenwood co-star. Check out the clip below along with some new images and a poster.

First Trailer for Atom Egoyan's 'The Captive' Starring Ryan Reynolds

A few years ago Ryan Reynolds had everything at his fingertips. Hot new DC Comics movie franchise, blockbuster films all lined up, and even a couple of buzzworthy indies. And then it all disappeared and Reynolds has kind of slipped into the background. But he may be on the way back, with a notable change-of-pace role in Marjane Satrapi's The Voices debuting at Sundance, and next he'll hit Cannes for Atom Egoyan's The Captive.

As Cannes continues to reveal footage from their full slate of films, the first trailer for The Captive is among them. The dark and foreboding film, reminiscent of last year's Prisoners, centers on a man dealing with the kidnapping of his young daughter, and how her disappearance leads to the destruction of everything around him. This is pretty tough material, and judging by this Reynolds could be up to the task of handling it. He's surrounded y a talented ensemble of Mireille Enos, Rosario Dawson, Scott Speedman, Alexia Fast, and Bruce Greenwood.

John Leguizamo Heads to 'Clarion Road'; Ryan Reynolds and Daniel Bruhl Join 'Woman in Gold'

* John Leguizamo, Lynn Collins (John Carter), and Jim Belushi have joined The Man from Carrion Road, the latest film from Apollo 18 director, Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego. Starring Patrick Wilson and Ian McShane, the story takes place on a Mexican border town where the new sheriff must team up with the guy he replaced to sort out the truth behind a botched drug deal.

* Helen Mirren is going to have plenty to look at while on set of Woman in Gold, her upcoming fact-based drama in which she plays Holocaust survivor Maria Altmann. Ryan Reynolds has joined the cast with Daniel Bruhl negotiating for a role in the Simon Curtis-directed film about Altmann's fight against the Austrian government to retrieve several priceless Gustav Klimt paintings stolen from her family during the war. Reynolds will play her lawyer who helped with the recovery, while Bruhl is his rival. [Deadline]

First Photo and Synopsis for Atom Egoyan's 'The Captive' with Ryan Reynolds

Atom Egoyan's West Memphis Three film Devil's Knot is currently making the festival rounds, but the director already has another film wrapped and ready to go.  Egoyan gathered up Ryan Reynolds, Mireille Enos, Scott Speedman, Rosario Dawson, Alexia Fast, Bruce Greenwood, and Kevin Durand for a dark drama originally titled Queen of the Night. Now it's been retitled The Captive, and not only are we getting the first official photo, but the complete synopsis has been revealed...

MATTHEW is driving his massive logging truck and leaves his precious daughter sleeping as he ducks into roadside washroom. When he returns she is gone.
In the following years, his wife TINA visits the police station where she has formed a relationship with the detective, NICOLE. Each year on CASS’s birthday, NICOLE gives TINA a report on how the search for her missing daughter is going. Lately, the police have identified the girl on the internet, but have had no success in tracking down her physical presence. CASS has aged 8 years since her disappearance. She is being held somewhere, but what is she doing there? The disturbing nature of her “broadcasts” is gradually revealed. Can CASS use these “broadcasts” to her advantage to plan her own escape?
THE CAPTIVE is a drama about how this kidnapping destroys two relationships—that of MATTHEW AND TINA, who blames her husband for all that has happened, as well of that of NICOLE and her co-‐worker JEFFREY. NICOLE AND JEFFREY work intensely with the horrors of internet child abuse crimes from day to day. Surprisingly, they find they have a good relationship despite their horrific work and are attracted to each other. They have a strong connection until the moment when Jeffrey’s obsession with work crosses an ethical line.
Years after the kidnapping, MATTHEW is driving a truckload of nursery trees to a remote destination. On his way, he stops for an overnight stay at a motel. When he wakes the next morning his truck is gone. A single tree is left in its place. In the far distance he sees another stolen tree planted on the side of  the  road. Approaching  it,  he  sees another and another. The Trees are leading him somewhere. Is this a nightmare, or is he confronting a disturbing dream come true?
The theme of THE CAPTIVE is that great evil will not go unpunished, but the twisting nature of this evil creates an unpredictable and complex story.

It sounds like it could have the potential to have the same gut-wrenching impact of Prisoners, but as of now there's no firm release date. Perhaps we'll see it pop up at Sundance? Fingers crossed.

Ryan Reynolds Gives An Update On the Deadpool Movie

A few years ago Ryan Reynolds was on top of the world, and he looked like the guy who was going to be at the forefront of the next wave of comic book movies. Not only did he have Green Lantern and R.I.P.D. coming up, but he had just starred as Deadpool in X-men Origins: Wolverine, with plans underway for a spinoff featuring Marvel's popular "Merc With A Mouth". It's been four years, and even though Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have been on board since the beginning, and Tim Miller is set to direct it, the Deadpool film is no closer to happening.

Reynolds addressed the situation back in March, expressing frustration over the delays and constant rewrites, and now speaking with Total Film he's given another brief update...

Reynolds: “That movie is alive and kicking, and then it’s dead as a doornail. Then it’s alive and kicking and then it’s dead… it’s like the worst relationship I’ve ever had! The character knows he’s a comic-book character, he knows he’s in a film, he knows who the executives are at the studio making the movie. In the current iteration of the script, Deadpool is aware of the Wolverine movie. He doesn’t say anything disparaging about it but he does at one point play with the Deadpool action figure with some curiosity.”

I won't talk about how Marvel has ruined Deadpool in the comics, but a feature film still holds tremendous appeal. Done right, an R-rated Deadpool movie could tap into fans of more traditional superhero flicks and those who appreciate the comic violence of Kick-Ass. And Reynolds has shown he can be a great Deadpool, more through his performance as Hannibal King in Blade Trinity than in the awful Wolverine movie.

Reynolds' R.I.P.D. hits theaters on July 19th.

Ryan Reynolds Does 'Mississippi Grind'; Christopher Plummer Will 'Imagine'; Joel Edgerton Joins Jeff Nichols' Sci-Fi Film

*It looked for awhile like Ryan Reynolds was going to be the next big thing, but that never quite panned out, did it? He's on the comeback trail, though, with the Men in Black-esque R.I.P.D. coming up this summer, and upcoming films directed by Marjane Satrapi and Atom Egoyan. Now he's joining Mississippi Grind, the next project from Half Nelson duo, Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden. He'll be replacing the previously cast Jake Gyllenhaal in the story of a struggling gambler facing mounting debt, who teams up with a gambling addict (Reynolds) to try and change his luck by going on a road trip with plans of winning back everything he lost. [Deadline]

*While it's always disappointing when a project loses the talents of the great Michael Caine, replacing him with fellow screen legend Christopher Plummer is definitely a lateral move. That's what has happened on the true life drama, Imagine, with Caine forced to drop out due to scheduling. The film stars Al Pacino as an aging rock 'n roller who discovers an old letter from John Lennon prompting him to slow down and reconnect with the son he never knew. Bobby Cannavale plays the son, with Jennifer Garner as Pacino's daughter-in-law, Annette Bening as a love interest, and Plummer as Pacino's longtime manager. Crazy Stupid Love writer Dan Fogelman is making his directorial debut, with filming set to begin next month. [Deadline]

*Between Shotgun Stories, Mud, and Take Shelter, the combination of filmmaker Jeff Nichols and General Zod...er, Michael Shannon, has proven to be one of the most exciting in the business. Fortunately we won't be seeing them split up any time soon, as we recently learned of an upcoming sci-fi film being set up at Warner Brothers. While details on that remain non-existent, we do know that Joel Edgerton will be starring alongside Shannon. Possibly titled Midnight Special, the film marks Nichols' first stab at a big studio project, so it'll be interesting to see how his style translates with a sizable budget behind it. [Variety]

There Can Be Only None as Ryan Reynolds Exits 'Highlander' Reboot

For the longest time, the Highlander mantra "There can be only one" held true when it comes to Summit Entertainment's reboot. Ryan Reynolds had been the only one attached to the long-developing picture for quite some time, even though the film has had numerous other creative talents attached at various stages. Justin Lin and most recently Juan Carlos Fresnadillo eyed the director's chair, while a plethora of writers, including Twilight scribe Melissa Rosenberg, have taken a crack at the script. But now that "one" is down to "none", as The Wrap reports Reynolds has departed the project.

Losing a star of Reynolds' status is typically a bad thing, but this is being looked at as a positive step in the right direction. When Fresnadillo left, the studio promised to find his replacement quickly, yet that has never happened. The feeling is that a new director would rather come aboard with a totally clean slate, rather than being saddled by Reynolds in the role of immortal swordsman Connor MacLeod. Maybe, but this film is clearly in dire straits and probably won't ever happen, anyway. And if it does it won't be for a damn long time, so oh well! It's probably for the best.

Reynolds has more than enough to fill up his calendar. He'll be making the press rounds for R.I.P.D., which opens this summer, as well voicing the lead snail in Dreamworks' Turbo. He recently wrapped Marjane Satrapi's psycho-thriller, The Voices, and has completed Queen of the Night for Atom Egoyan. He'll next begin filming Tarsem Singh's thriller, Selfless.

Ryan Reynolds teams up with Tarsem for 'Selfless'

The knock on visual auteur Tarsem Singh has always been that his films are certainly breathtaking and imaginatively constructed, but that the stories never quite measure up. I would take issue with that when it comes his incredible sophomore film, The Fall, but certainly think the criticism applies to Mirror Mirror and Immortals. He'll get another shot to put his creative eye to good use helming a film with a far out premise that should be right up his alley.

Tarsem will team up with Ryan Reynolds on Selfless, which features a script by Alex and David Pastor (Carriers), that is simply bazarre...

"An extremely wealthy, elderly man dying from cancer undergoes a radical medical procedure that transfers his consciousness to the body of a healthy young man but everything may not be as good as it seems when he starts to uncover the mystery of the body’s origins and the secret organization that will kill to keep its secrets."

So it's kind of like what Reynolds was doing in The Change-Up, only much darker and hopefully a lot more entertaining? Sounds just crazy enough to work, actually, especially if the script is strong enough to support what  Tarsem will surely bring behind the camera. No word on when this will roll as Reynolds is currently filming Marjane Satrapi's The Voices. Tarsem has been attached to a major Marco Polo biopic that we haven't heard anything about since Gong Li came aboard last year.  [Deadline]

Anna Kendrick and Gemma Arterton hear 'The Voices' with Ryan Reynolds

Anna Kendrick and Gemma Arterton's names have been mentioned a lot recently, as they both seem to be keeping themselves plenty busy. Arterton, who recently starred in Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, recently finished shooting Runner Runner with Ben Affleck, and signed up to star in an adaptation of Gemma Bovery. Kendrick is part of Robert Redford's terrific The Company You Keep ensemble, and a sequel to her hit Pitch Perfect just got a green light. Now the two will team up for the first time on The Voices, a psychological thriller starring Ryan Reynolds.

The film marks a serious change-of-course for Persepolis and Chicken with Plums director, Marjane Satrapi, venturing away from the usual tales of her childhood in Iran. Written by Michael R. Perry (Paranormal Activity 2), the strange story follows a lonely bathtub factory employee named Jerry Hickfang, who kills the woman he's in love with and then begins taking advice from his evil "talking" cat Mr. Whiskers and benevolent dog Bosco who lead him on a path to salvation.

Filming is set to begin soon in Berlin. [Deadline]

Tim Burton to direct Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz in 'Big Eyes'

There's quite a bit of backstory involved with the production of Big Eyes, a film that has been in development for more than five years. A biopic of American artists Margaret and Walter Keane, who were famous for their oil paintings of doe-eyed children, the film has had a number of stars attached to play the married couple. Last year Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Reynolds came aboard, succeeding the original pair of Thomas Haden Church and Kate Hudson. Tim Burton was circling a producer role, but instead it appears he's decided to direct it himself, while also bringing aboard a new pair of leads.

Deadline reports that Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz will now star in the film, joining Burton in what looks like a welcome change-of-pace for them all. Written by Ed Wood scribes Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewsk, who were originally going to co-direct, the story will follow the couples' rise to fame in the 1950s an 60s, until their divorce and ensuing legal battle as Walter attempted to take credit for paintings done by Margaret. The case turned into a circus, as Walter was challenged to paint in front of the court, but declined due to a sore shoulder. Margaret would easily prove she was the artist and win the decision, destroying Walter's career.

There's no word on when filming would begin, but with Adams and Waltz coming off recent Oscar success it's likely that The Weinstein Company will want to fast track it as a potential awards contender.

Ryan Reynolds done with Green Lantern for now; talks Deadpool film

At this point, Ryan Reynolds has starred in three superhero films, and it can be argued that none of them amounted to all that much. While Blade: Trinity is pretty damn good in my opinion, the box office for it was the weakest. X-men Origins: Wolverine was atrocious, and featured Reynolds as the worst version of Deadpool ever, nearly ruining the character for good. And of course there's that emerald stink pot Green Lantern, one of the biggest flops of 2011. Reynolds could be forgiven for not wanting any part of superheroes for awhile, but he's still interested in a solo Deadpool film, while also shrugging off the possibility of joining a Green Lantern sequel or Justice League.

Empire spoke to him during press for The Croods, and the conversation inevitably turned to the idea of Reynolds playing Green Lantern again in any capacity. He doesn't sound the least bit interested, but could change his mind with the right director...

Reynolds: "I saw how difficult it is to make that concept palatable, and how confused it all can be when you don't really know exactly where you're going with it or you don't really know how to access that world properly. That world comic book fans have been accessing for decades and falling in love with. So at this point I have very little interest in joining that kind of world. [A] great script and a good director can always turn that around. I believe that Joss Whedon is the guy that just nails it and Christopher Nolan obviously nails it. So if they were gonna do it like that, it would be an interesting thing to do."

As for Deadpool, the popular Merc-with-a Mouth was badly mishandled in Wolverine's solo film, which is why fans were so hyped when talk of a spinoff started years ago. While directors have come and gone, with Tim Miller currently attached, the R-rated and extremely violent script by the writers of Zombieland has remained in place. Reynolds clearly has hopes of the film happening, even as he runs down a list of reasons why it never will...

Reynolds: "I love Deadpool and there is a script that’s in development. But it’s so, so far into the R-rated zone… it’s a nearly NC-17 world and I just don’t know if the studio would ever risk their reputation doing it. We’ve been developing it and we would never wanna do it unless you could it that R-rated way, so…You could do it for a pittance compared to the modern sort of epic scale superhero movies, but it’s about a guy who knows he’s in a movie and knows he’s in a comic book who is deeply mentally disturbed and hyper violent. And that’s tough to get by a studio."

One other reason is that Deadpool's constant "breaking of the fourth wall" mostly consists of him insulting the Wolverine film, specifically his awful appearance in it....

Reynolds: "The script is one rewrite away from Deadpool jumping across the desk at the studio executive and attacking him... In the current iteration of the script, it doesn’t address Wolverine – though it does address Deadpool’s appearance in 'Wolverine'. Deadpool was not happy with Deadpool in Wolverine. He has a sort of a WTF!? moment with that."

Wha!? You mean the studio doesn't want to spend millions of dollars to pay for their own public humiliation? That's crazy! Oh well. Reynolds isn't done with comic book movies, though. He'll appear in R.I.P.D. opposite Jeff Bridges later this year.

Ryan Reynolds and Jon Favreau join forces to 'Battle for Bonneville'

This year has seen Ryan Reynolds and Jon Favreau trying to put a disastrous 2011 behind them. After a series of high profile flops, Reynolds bounced back with Safe House, which was a big enough hit to warrant a developing sequel. Favreau lost the Iron Man 3 directing gig(although he'll still appear as Happy Hogan), and saw Cowboys & Aliens land with a thud. But he's coming back having been signed to direct an adaptation of the Broadway hit, Jersey Boys.

Now the two are pairing up on a very different project for both of them. Favreau is set to direct Reynolds in Battle for Bonneville, which tells the story of half-brothers Art and Walt Arfons, who began as partners but ultimately became competitors in trying to break the world landspeed record. The script comes from Dan Gilroy, who just co-wrote The Bourne Legacy with his brother, Tony.

This one's still pretty early on as New Regency just secured the rights to the story, so we'll see how this shapes up over the next few months. Both Reynolds and Favreau are plenty busy, so things may change. [Deadline]

Sure Shots: Ben Affleck; Rebel Wilson; Ryan Reynolds

* Back in April we learned that Crazy Stupid Love directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa were set to bring back Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling for Focus, marking the third time the two actors would star together after next year's Gangster Squad. Well, we haven't heard much about it since, and in the meantime both have dropped out, with Ben Affleck stepping into Gosling's shoes. Or at least he will if a suitable female lead is found. Focus follows an experienced con man who enters into a relationship with a newcomer to the criminal world, only to find their romantic past come back to haunt them when they meet again years later. Ficarra and Requa will also write the script. The Gosling/Stone pairing would have been guaranteed fun, so it's a little disappointing they're no longer involved. [Deadline]

* Who's been the breakout star of 2012 so far? If you ask me it's Rebel Wilson. After making a scene-stealing supporting turn in last year's Bridesmaids, she's far and away been the best part of Pitch Perfect, What to Expect When You're Expecting, and Bachelorette in just the last few months. As her star continues to rise, Universal is keen on staying in the Rebel business. They plan to develop an untitled original comedy project which Wilson will write, produce, and star in.  No details are available yet, but any chance to see more of Wilson is okay with me. She'll be seen next in the indie comedy Struck by Lightning, and then in Michael Bay's crime caper Pain and Gain. [Deadline]

* I continue to be blown away the by the extreme shift in gears Marjane Satrapi(Persepolis) is attempting with her next film, The Voices. Veering wildly away from the deeply personal stories of growing up in Iran, The Voices is instead a psychological thriller centering on Jerry Hickfang, a lonely bathtub factory employee who murders the woman he's become infatuated with, then begins taking advice from his evil "talking" cat and benevolent dog who lead him on a fantastical path to salvation. Ryan Reynolds has now entered talks to star as Hickfang, adding to a weird upcoming slate that includes the supernatural R.I.P.D., the upcoming Highlander remake, and the animated comedy The Croods. [Deadline]

Sure Shots: Malin Akerman; Ryan Reynolds; 'The Hobbit'

* Ok, it's really time to start paying attention to Breacher, and stop dissing it just because it's a David Ayer-joint. Already with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sam Worthington, Joe Manganiello, Terrence Howard, and Dawn Olivieri, the cop thriller is now about to add the sexy Malin Akerman to the cast. Akerman has been steadily improving over the last couple years, hitting a new high in last year's happythankyoumoreplease, and making for a charming addition to Rock of Ages. Akerman will play a member of the DEA task force who rob a drug cartel for millions, only to get picked off one-by-one once they think things have quieted down. [Variety]

* Remember Ryan Reynolds? Hey, he's not dead yet(although his 2011 nearly finished him), and he's still someone directors seem to be keen on working with. He's got the undead cop flick, R.I.P.D coming up, and now he's set to join Atom Egoyan's next film, Queen of the Night. Reynolds will play the father whose daughter is kidnapped eight years prior. Now a series of clues point to her possibly being alive, and...well, that's the mystery, I suppose. Egoyan wrote the script along with David Fraser, with production set to begin in February. Just another thing to stand in the way of that Deadpool flick, which I'm gonna say will never happen. At least not in the form we've come to expect. Egoyan is currently shooting his West Memphis Three film, Devil's Knot.

* Back before all this trilogy stuff, the big deal surrounding The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was that Peter Jackson shot the film with a frame rate of 48fps. Revealing a few bits of footage a few months ago at Cinemacon, the response to it was...."meh". So maybe that's why Warner Brothers has made the decision to only release the 48fps version of the film on a limited basis, only hitting a small number of theaters. Honestly, most theater chains aren't equipped for it, anyway, and most people don't give a crap one way or another about frame rate. The film hits theaters on December 13th, so we should expect a list of participating theaters soon. [Variety]
