Ryan Reynolds is a Pet-Loving Serial Killer in Trailer for 'The Voices'

For a film that got mostly positive reviews out of Sundance, Marjane Satrapi's (Persepolis) macabre comedy The Voices has been sitting around for awhile. It just goes to show the impact of the "festival bubble" where a film about a serial killer who talks to his pets can be praised, but then probably proved a challenge for Lionsgate to slot as a general release. But the film is on the way now, and with it comes a brand new trailer.

Starring Ryan Reynolds, Anna Kendrick, Gemma Arterton, and Jacki Weaver, the dark comedy centers on a mentally unstable but happy man who gets off his meds and begins hearing voices from his pet dog and cat encouraging him to be a serial killer. When he starts taking his meds again he realizes it may be too late. The trailer isn't as funny as the concept would suggest but hopefully the best and most bizarre stuff is being saved for later.

The Voices opens in theaters and VOD on February 6th.

Dylan Baker Joins 'Selma'; Gemma Arterton Goes 'One Square Mile'; Ken Jeong Causes 'International Incident'

* Character actor Dylan Baker (remember he was The Lizard in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies?) will play J. Edgar Hoover in Ava Duvernay's MLK biopic, Selma. Hoover, who was last portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio a couple of years back, used the power of the FBI to keep tabs on King (David Oyelowo) and his followers in an effort to undermine the civil rights movement. [Deadline]

* Gemma Arteron has joined Idris Elba in the gritty, South West London drama One Square Mile, written by Leon Butler and directed by Michael Caton-Jones. Elba will also produce the multi-tiered story previously described as centering on "four people, four extraordinary stories, all lived out within one square mile." Arterton adds to that saying “it’s about ‘love, action and gangsters in London.’”. [DailyMail]

* Ken Jeong is set to star in the Steve Carell-produced comedy, International Incident, from The Daily Show writer David Javerbaum. Jeong will play one of five United Nations delegated who go on a road trip to find their former loves. Carell and Javerbaum know one another from the actor's time as a correspondent on The Daily Show. After a string of supporting roles and voice acting gigs this will be Jeong's first time leading a major studio project. [THR]

Review: 'Runner Runner' Starring Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck

Wait a second! How can a film that combines Batman, Sean Parker, a Bond Girl, and online gambling possibly turn out as dull and mediocre as Runner Runner? Pretty darn easily, apparently. Directed by Brad Furman, whose legitimately terrific The Lincoln Lawyer set Matthew McConaughey on his career resurgence, the film packs mucho star power, boasts a gorgeous Costa Rican locale, and yet lacks the one thing that every thriller needs to succeed: actual thrills.

It's tough to find a reason to care a lick about the terribly-named Richie Furst (Justin Timberlake), a Princeton student getting his hustle on as a recruiter for an online gambling site. A Wall Street washout hoping to get back in the game after securing his degree, Richie has seen first-hand how the system can screw the little guy. "Everybody gambles", he tells himself, a mantra he probably learned from his loser, gambling addict father. When no longer able to rely on his gig to keep up with the hefty tuition payments, Richie does what any reasonable person would do and risks it all pulling an all-night session of online poker.  After losing every penny of the $17000 he had in the bank, Richie discovers that he may have been cheated, and makes the rash decision to fly off to Costa Rica to confront the site's owner.

Make sense? Only about as much as raising on a 7-2 off-suit in a game of Texas Hold 'Em. The site is run by Ivan Block (Ben Affleck), an American who runs his gambling enterprise the way Don Corleone ran the Mafia. Even the site's name, Midnight Black, sounds like the moniker some gangster would give his favorite gun. Block keeps the Costa Rican gaming officials off his back through a combination of lucrative payoffs and violent threats, living the lavish life that Richie has always desired for himself. Impressed by Richie's gravitas, Block hires him as his right-hand man and numbers cruncher, putting the Princeton education to good use. Richie gets a taste of what living in style is really like, and that includes scoring with Block's ex-girl (Gemma Arterton) and business partner.

Of course it isn't long before we discover that Block is into some really dirty stuff, and that bullish FBI agent Shavers (Anthony Mackie) will break the rules to take him down. That means putting Richie in a tough spot between his loyalty to Block, his love of the high life, and the most obvious need to not go to jail. There aren't many twists and certainly few turns in a familiar, mid-level crime yarn that sadly has little to do with gambling. You'd expect more insider lingo and poker insight out of writers Brian Koppelman and David Levien having written one of the great gambling movies ever in Rounders. Runner Runner quickly becomes just another story of excess, with all the requisite hot babes, wild parties, and falls from grace we've come to expect. There's never a hint of danger, less urgency, and absolutely zero stakes. That is unless we're meant to care if Richie graduates and becomes some hot shot Wall Street big wig? Not even Timberlake can sell that to the audience right now.

It doesn't help that the normally likable Timberlake is a flavorless dud as Richie. He never quite nails the bad boy persona he's looking for, and his chemistry with the gorgeous but equally-flat Arterton is nowhere to be found. Only Affleck scores as the evil, homesick, and sullen Block, adding color to a character that could have turned out to be a complete joke. Sure, his Pittsburgh accent sounds exactly like his Boston, but you won't care when he's dropping most of the film's best one-liners. In Block we see a guy who probably started out with the best of intentions, but has been changed by the pervasive corruption he helped foster. It's a meatier role than the trailers suggest, and Affleck proves he can rise above pedestrian material such as what Runner Runner provides.

The Talent Show: Gemma Arterton

Not so revealing on the opening picture, I know...but there in lies the beauty (literally) of Gemma Arterton, she's simply breathtaking. One of the most underrated beauties in Holllywood, Arterton's recent filmogrophy can easily be described as prolific. At home playing a badass leather-clad with hunter in Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters as she is playing a newly beautiful temptress in Tamara Drewe we've yet to see her put out a less than great performance. You can catch the immensely hot Gemma Arterton in next week's Runner Runner with Ben Affleck, Justin Timberlake and Anthony Mackie.

So, talent...check. Hotness...check, but if you are still undecided on Ms. Arterton's sexability I'll present to you the scene that put her in my top 10.

For the naysayers, here's a few more.

New Trailer for Gambling Thriller 'Runner Runner' with Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake

Now that the fervor has mostly calmed down about Ben Affleck playing Batman, it's a good time to look at the films he actually has coming out this year. The dark knight will be teaming up with the voice of Boo-Boo aka Justin Timberlake for Runner Runner, an online gambling thriller looks like it could either be a dark horse this Oscar season, or a forgettable entry on everyone's resume.

A new trailer for the film has been released, and unfortunately it plays like more of the latter than the former. Affleck plays the head goon at an online gambling outfit that screws a college student (Timberlake) out of tuition. When the kid comes looking for answers, he's instead offered a job and begins to experience just how seedy the operation is from the inside. While this looks potentially corny and maybe even terrible, there's reason for optimism with Brad Furman (The Lincoln Lawyer) directing, plus a script by Rounders scribes Brian Koppelman & David Levien.

Co-starring Gemma Arterton and Anthony Mackie, Runner Runner shows its hand on October 4th.

Ben Affleck Lays Down the Law in New 'Runner Runner' Clip

I suppose in a world of online gambling, you'd want Ben Affleck as your mentor. But Justin Timberlake looks pretty damn sure that that's not who he wants on his side at all. Last week, a new clip was released of Timberlake and Affleck, the latter welcoming the younger into the folds of black market gambling.

Another clip has been released from their new film Runner Runner, giving us more insight into what seems like a very turmoil-filled relationship between the two. This time around, Affleck throws all his supposedly welcoming arms out the window and gets angry when confronted by Timberlake about an event gone wrong.

You can watch the clip below!

Runner Runner also stars Gemma Arterton and Anthony Mackie. The film hits theaters October 4.

New Clip From Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck Movie 'Runner Runner'

The announcement of Ben Affleck officially slated to play Batman sent everyone into a frenzy. Some people were ecstatic, others were appalled, some didn't really care either which way. Regardless of your opinion on the matter, it looks like it's happening.

But before Ben Affleck puts on the famous cape and cowl, he must first go head-to-head with Justin Timberlake in the new movie Runner Runner. The movie pits Timberlake, who believes he being swindled out of his money in online gambling, heads to confront Affleck in order to get his money back.

In the new clip released, we see Timberlake and Affleck meeting. Affleck gives him back his money but offers Timberlake a chance to make seven figures in three months and even more over the course of several years. Of course the younger man accepts, because there aren't flashing signs that scream "don't do it, this is bad!" everywhere.

You can watch the clip below! Runner Runner also stars Gemma Arterton and Anthony Mackie. It hits theaters September 27. And if you haven't seen the trailer yet, you can watch it below the clip!

Anna Kendrick and Gemma Arterton hear 'The Voices' with Ryan Reynolds

Anna Kendrick and Gemma Arterton's names have been mentioned a lot recently, as they both seem to be keeping themselves plenty busy. Arterton, who recently starred in Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, recently finished shooting Runner Runner with Ben Affleck, and signed up to star in an adaptation of Gemma Bovery. Kendrick is part of Robert Redford's terrific The Company You Keep ensemble, and a sequel to her hit Pitch Perfect just got a green light. Now the two will team up for the first time on The Voices, a psychological thriller starring Ryan Reynolds.

The film marks a serious change-of-course for Persepolis and Chicken with Plums director, Marjane Satrapi, venturing away from the usual tales of her childhood in Iran. Written by Michael R. Perry (Paranormal Activity 2), the strange story follows a lonely bathtub factory employee named Jerry Hickfang, who kills the woman he's in love with and then begins taking advice from his evil "talking" cat Mr. Whiskers and benevolent dog Bosco who lead him on a path to salvation.

Filming is set to begin soon in Berlin. [Deadline]

'Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters' sequel in the works

After getting kicked around the schedule like a soccer ball for months, Paramount Pictures dropped Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters on us in January with few expecting it to amount to very much. Shocker of shockers, it actually performed pretty well, but where it really did the most damage was overseas. All told, the film has crossed the $200M mark, and that means it's time to start talking sequel.

Paramount Pictures, along with MTV, Will Ferrell's Gary Sanchez Productions, and MGM are all pitching in for a follow-up to the campy, bloody action film about grown up versions of the fairy tale siblings. The big question is whether Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton would return or move on. They signed on for the film when their careers were in very different places, but at the same time the film has only raised their global profiles.

Writer/director Tommy Wirkola is currently working on a Dead Snow sequel, and it's unclear if he'll be asked to return.  My gut tells me this goes straight-to-DVD with a brand new cast, but I expect we'll hear something more concrete soon. [Deadline]

Review: 'Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters'

Historically the classic fairy tales have not had the best of luck being adapted to live action films. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters has broken the mold. I'm not saying this flick is an Oscar contender with broad appeal, but in many ways it is changing the game for movies of it's kind. Let me not get ahead of myself, you'd probably like to know what the movies about first. Hansel (Jeremy Renner) and his sister Gretel (Gemma Arterton), as you probably already know, were kidnapped by a witch as children. A witch that they then killed as it prepared to cook and eat them in a house made of candy. The story, by way of a very cool intro that seems to be what the intro of Jonah Hex was supposed to be, jumps forward to an unspecified number of years later. Hansel & Gretel are now much older and have dedicated their lives to eradicating the world of witches. We catch up with them as they are called to a town that has been plagued by a grand witch (Famke Janssen) who's been taking all of the children. The pair then gear up and head out to find the witch and her coven all while dealing with a jerk of a sheriff (Peter Stormare) who would like nothing more than for them to leave and some rather ground shaking insights to their past.

I had little to no hope for this movie. After last year's Red Riding Hood I didn't think Hollywood was capable of producing a new take on an old fairy tale that would actually be enjoyable. I was wrong in so many ways. Let me be very clear on something...this is not a "quality" film, it's cheesy, obvious at times, and more often than not quite over the top. HOWEVER, it knows just how to do these things in an enjoyable way. I'll be honest, I was never quite sure why people complained so much when a studio made cuts or changes to a movie to achieve a PG-13 rating over an R. It's just smart business and it's not like the enjoyment factor of the film can suffer because you don't see blood splatter or here someone drop a well timed F-bomb. Apparently I was wrong. Hansel & Gretel comes with a solid R rating. Liquefied heads, potty mouths and even an errant booby, the film hits all the points necessary and for some reason it's actually better for it...to say it feels more real that way seems like a dumb thing to say with regards to a movie about witch hunters but somehow everything just works on a level higher than that which would have been achieved with a "clean" version.

The story is actually a well worked addition to the classic fairy tale, but that's not even what it's all about. This movie hinges on the charisma of it's leads and the cool way in which they dispatch the witches. The gear is very steam punk but the focus lies more on how they use it than on how it looks and that, my friends is where the difference lies. Jeremy Renner continues his streak of being one of Hollywoods most likable stars and Gemma Arterton attains a whole new level of hotness and adds a layer of bad-ass on top. Seriously...I think she's taken #1 on my list of women to lose an arm for....just wow. While I could go on praising the cast I'll jump to the last thing I want to give some real praise to and that's the visual effects. I thought Van Helsing had a tremendous amount of potential but the unbelievable over use of CG totally ruined the movie for me, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters seems to have learned from that, while the CG is certainly utilized at a high level the filmmakers show us a promising level of restraint. The witch makeup and most notably the huggable troll Edward both look amazing for a January release action film. For Edward they either developed some amazing new way to use CGI or they went the route of Where the Wild Things Are and used a CGI hybrid. No matter how advanced CGI characters get they will always look slightly off, using this apparent hybrid method allows for an amazing looking creature with a believable and, if need be, sympathetic face. The witches, well honestly I don't know how they achieved the look, but it appears to be makeup and it looks awesome. Frightening on a level reminiscent of The Exorcist you can easily tell the level of evil your dealing with at even just a quick glance.

Generally I grade the movies I see on a seasonal curve. Movies in the January to March time frame are usually the least of what Hollywood has to offer for that year with April to early August being the top tier. I honestly can tell you that Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters would not seem completely out of place during the summer blockbuster season. Should you go into thinking you're going to see something akin to The Avengers? Certainly not, but you should expect to see a fun and exciting 90 minutes of adventure. Are there problems with the movie? Of course, the 3D for one is good but completely useless and there are a few points in the story that serve no purpose other than to allow a moment later in the story...Hansel's apparent diabetes for one. These are all things that don't slow the story down and certainly don't take away from the fun factor.

PS. If you are going to see it in 3D you are in for a huge treat in the form of a four minute clip from GI Joe: Retaliation. Simply amazing Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow fight is featured.

New 'Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters' red band trailer

There's actually a really cool and inventive premise at the heart of Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, which is that the fairy tale kids who survived getting cooked in an oven grew up as well-armed soldiers in the fight against covens everywhere. But as last month's trailer proved, just having a great idea doesn't always mean it'll translate effectively to the big screen, as the finished product directed by Tommy Wirkola(Dead Snow) looked flat out ridiculous.

If you thought it was bad before, take the same shoddy CGI effects and awful one-liners, throw in buckets of bad digital blood and you've got the newly released red band trailer. Starring a bored-looking Jeremy Renner and a practically comatose Gemma Arterton("My...name..is..Gretel...zzzzz") as the titular duo, the film takes place fifteen years after the story we all remember from our childhood, as they use technologically advanced weaponry to take out witches wherever they may be hiding.

This could end up being a fun, guilty pleasure, but right now it just looks ugly and laugh-free. Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters opens in 3D on January 11th 2013....[IGN]

New trailer for 'Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters' with Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton

Well, not every Jeremy Renner franchise can work out like gangbusters, can it? Already part of The Avengers, Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol, and The Bourne Legacy, Renner looks to have gone to the well one too many times in the first trailer for Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, directed by Dead Snow's Tommy Wirkola.

As you probably figured out from the on-the-nose title, the film expects us to take seriously that those two witch-killing brats from the Brothers Grimm fairy tale grew up, found an armory of futuristic weapons, and set out on a path of slaughtering those who ride brooms for a living. Better hope they never find Hogwarts. Renner and Gemma Arterton look downright silly in their ridiculous outfits, and it's simply impossible to buy them as hardened warriors with names like Hansel and Gretel. All I envision are little kids in overalls eating gingerbread cookies. The special effects are sketchy at best, and neither star appears to be having very much fun. No wonder Paramount kept kicking the film around the schedule before finally plunking it down in the January wasteland.

It's always possible this could turn out to be great, and I sincerely hope it does. Renner and Arterton are usually very good, and the supporting cast is pretty good with Famke Janssen, Thomas Mann, Peter Stormare, and our girl Zoe Bell in a tiny role. Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters will cast its spell on January 11th 2013....

Gemma Arterton joins gambling drama, 'Runner Runner'

Already with Ben Affleck, Justin Timberlake, Oliver Cooper, and Anthony Mackie, the online gambling drama Runner Runner is about to get even better and a whole lot sexier. Variety reports that Gemma Arterton(Tamara Drewe) is the latest to join the film, to be directed by Brad Furman(The Lincoln Lawyer).

Based on a script by David Levien and Brian Koppelman(Rounders), the story has Timberlake as a Princeton student who loses his tuition playing online poker, but ends up the right hand man of the site's corrupt boss, portrayed by Affleck. Arterton will play Timberlake's love interest.

Arterton was last seen in Tarsem Singh's Immortals, and is probably best remembered for getting drowned in oil as Strawberry Fields in Quantum of Solace. Filming on Runner Runner is set to begin next month.

'Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters' bumped to January 2013

Those who thought the release of the first image from Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters meant that we'd be seeing a trailer or anything for the fairy tale action flick are going to be sorely disappointed. Initially set to be released in March, Paramount has now pushed the movie back almost an entire year, all the way to January 11th 2013. Any confidence I had this would at least be a decent popcorn flick have now been dashed.

Directed by Tommy Wirkola(Dead Snow), the film stars franchise whore Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton(Conan the Barbarian) as the fairy tale characters who survived becoming witch food as children, and grew up to become bad ass killers armed with ridiculous weaponry.

While the move is troubling, there may be a method to Paramount's madness. By the time the film hits, Renner's popularity should be at an all-time high after The Avengers and The Bourne Legacy. If those two movies pan out the way some expect, Hansel & Gretel may turn out to be a January box office heavyweight.

1st look at Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters

It may seem crazy, but three franchises(possibly four) aren't nearly enough for Jeremy Renner. Let's see...he's got The Avengers....Mission: Impossible....oh, and The Bourne Legacy. And let's not forget that his Hawkeye character could be spun off into his own series at any time.  No, the guy just isn't busy enough, so he's got one more in Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.

Directed by Tommy Wirkola(Dead Snow), and produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, the film features Renner and Gemma Arterton(Quantum of Solace) as the two folk tale icons all grown up, armed to the teeth with some badass weapons, and taking their knack for offing witches to a whole new level. Instead of pushing the old hags into ovens, they'll probably get roasted by a flamethrower or something.

Arterton sounds pretty excited about it, and revealed that we will revisit the duo's first adventure chronicled in the Brothers Grimm story...

Arterton: "You see a series of flashbacks with their experience of killing that first witch, which is brilliant... The heart of it is that these kids grow up to be bloodthirsty witch hunters."

"It’s also very, very dark, and bloodthirsty and there’s a lot of cursing. It’s kind of got a [Quentin] Tarantino feel, really,"

Expect his one to be pretty campy, mainly because that seems to be Wirkola's style(Dead Snow is gory and cheesy as heck), but also because of the March  2nd release date, which tends to be a dumping ground for easy action flicks.

Look for a trailer to be released some time next week. [EW]

Two of these actresses will likely star in The Dark Knight Rises, but which two?

The gymnastics going on at some entertainment sites to try and keep up with all rumors surrounding The Dark Knight Rises is funny to watch. Not that I'm any different, but let's just say sometimes it helps to sit on any story for a little while to see how things actually shake out. When it comes to the casting of the next Batman flick, it's almost a must to just wait and see.  So take yesterday. Two big time stories about the same thing: the lead female roles in TDKR. Both wildly contradictory, with one complaining that the roles have been cast and the next story only minutes later announcing a bunch more contenders for the same parts.  Huh?

The first story came from Collider, and I honestly hope it's the one that wins out. It states that Eva Green(The Dreamers) and Naomi Watts(Fair Game) have been cast as the two primary female roles in the film. Green would be Talia Al Ghul, the daughter of Ra's Al Ghul(played by Liam Neeson in Batman Begins) who reportedly would be seeking revenge for her father's death. The Al Ghul connection has been a rumor floating around for awhile, so it makes some sense. Watts, who had been mentioned on a shortlist of possible actresses back in November, would be stepping into the high heels of sexy photojournalist, Vicki Vale. Kim Basinger played Vale back in the Tim Burton directed Batman film back in 1989. Why they insist on using her character is beyond me.

But here comes the fun contradiction, as THR produced a whole new list of contenders for the very same roles Collider said have already been filled. What they've got includes some names we've already heard before, such as Keira Knightley and Anne Hathaway, but also includes Jessica Biel, Gemma Arterton, Charlotte Riley(who co-starred with Biel in Easy Virtue), and Kate Mara(Transsiberian).

With principle photography set to begin in May, you can bet we'll know who's correct soon enough. I think it's best to assume that both stories have some things right and some things wrong, with perhaps Green and Watts not being as locked down for the parts so much as in discussions. I'd love to see Anne Hathaway involved somehow, but if it's between her and Watts I'll take the Mulholland Drive star every single time.

Punch Drunk DVDs

Eat Pray Love
As much as I adore Julia Roberts, this would've been a much more enjoyable film if it were titled Eat Prey Love about a killer who stalks candy givers on Valentine's Day. But it's not, and the adaptation of Elizabeth Gilbert's famous ode to female empowerment and enlightenment is mostly warmed over schlock. Beautiful warmed over schlock, featuring a wonderful performance by Roberts, but schlock nonetheless. Do yourself a favor and don't even attempt to watch this on an empty stomach like I did. Big mistake.

The Expendables
The best thing about Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables wasn't the film itself, it was the year long build-up to it's release. The on set interviews and clips painted a hilarious picture of action hero comraderie that we all hoped would spill over on screen. Did that happen? Well, yes and no.There's no doubt that seeing greats like Sly, Bruce Willis, and Schwarzenegger together for the first time ever is hella fun. But does that scene work like you want it to? Probably not. In fact I think people might be surprised by exactly how much blistering action is actually involved. This one was a game time decision for me but ultimately I landed on the side of buying it with hopes that the sequel lives up to all my lofty expectations.

Madea's Big Happy Family: The Play
Tyler Perry continues to be entirely too comfortable in that getup.

Crank/Crank 2
One of these insane, juiced up action flicks starring everybody's favorite grim faced hero is really awesome. The other is Crank 2: High Voltage. For that price it's a steal, though.

Flipped
How bad have things gotten that we can't get a national theatrical release for a Rob Reiner coming-of-age film? The man practically invented them! Flipped flew in and out of theaters before most people even knew it existed, but hopefully now they'll find this sweet tale of childhood romance.

The Disappearance of Alice Creed
You'd think that a Brit crime thriller featuring the scorching hot Gemma Arterton(Clash of the Titans) could find at least a little bit of traction here in the States but it mostly vanished without so much as a peep. This twisty crime caper features the gorgeous redhead as a woman who is kidnapped by a pair of ex-convicts. I certainly hope the reluctance to push this film further had nothing to do with the open homosexuality of the two perpetrators.

I'm Still Here
Ultimately I had to ask myself "What was the point of all that, really?"  Joaquin Phoenix and Casey Affleck's self destructive mockumentary gained a ton of national attention for the former's supposed fall into terminal neuroses. Phoenix became a public pariah, ruined a perfectly good flick's chances of success(Two Lovers), and then out of nowhere he just reveals it was all a big fake and that he's perfectly normal again. Huh? But as with all movies of this sort, the only thing that matters is whether or not the film is entertaining, and it's definitely one of the most engrossing and disturbing docs I've seen in quite some time. For that reason alone I simply have to recommened it.

The Winning Season
This well-regarded sports drama from last year features a killer cast that would be great in anything other than a flick about girls' basketball: Sam Rockwell, Emma Roberts, Shareka Epps, Emily Rios, and Rooney Mara. Pretty hard to ignore that.

Story details emerge about Ridley Scott's prequel to Alien(SPOILER!!!)

I hate spoiling anything about any movie, no matter how insignificant it might be. So just know that what you're about to read, if true, gives a lot of details about the plot to Ridley Scott's Alien prequel. I'm not giving spoiler space, so from here on out you've been warned.

Whatsplaying.au supposedly got a copy of the script, penned by Lost's Damon Lindelof. I say "supposedly" but now that the site has taken everything down at the request of the studio, I'm going to assume everything they had was legit.  So what I'll be describing is being pulled mainly from Slashfilm. In fact, I might as well quote them.

The story follows a group of terraforming aliens the script calls ‘Growers’ — these are seemingly of the race from which comes the original film’s ‘space jockey.’ There’s a strange sequence in which the Growers use a bit of mind control to instigate a homosexual encounter between Fin and Karik, two male human slave farmers. The aliens, you see, are a single-sex species and don’t understand the male-female breeding requirements of humans.

The title — the xenomorph — is a creature used by Growers as part of the terraforming process, and at a point in the script it develops into the creature we know and love. So we won’t see it in the form we know right off; this will be a payoff later in the script.

Into the group of Growers and human slaves comes a ship crewed by “the usual misfits” complete with a female character that sounds like Vasquez from Aliens, and another woman named Truks that is reportedly the role for which Gemma Arterton was considered. Ridley Scott has also reportedly met with Lance Henricksen, though how the guy who fit into the established storyline might work in this film, I can only conjecture. (I’d guess he’d appear only towards the end, as the xenomorphs are out of control, in a story thread that would point right towards the original .)

The summation is that this script is “a deep movie — part science-fiction, part psychological drama, part, dare I say, romance.”

If all this is true, I'm seriously digging it already. Looks like we could be getting some of the best of everything that made the first two Alien flicks great. A lot of action with the arrival of the human combatants in the second half, along with some tense psycho drama in the first half.

Alec Baldwin, Sharlto Copley, Gemma Arterton to join Men in Black 3?

Man, they're pulling out all the stops just to get me interested in Men in Black 3, aren't they? Clearly this is all just for me. First they bring in Emma Thompson(whom I love) to play the modern day boss of MIB, and now reports are Alex Baldwin is negotiating to play the boss back in 1969. Remember, this third installment of Barry Sonnenfeld's sci-fi comedy series is basically a time travel story.

Along with Baldwin, Sharlto Copley(District 9) and Gemma Arterton(Clash of the Titans) are in talks for roles. Copley will once again be playing an alien, so he's pretty much trying to corner the martian market. Arterton will reportedly be Baldwin's secretary, which sounds like a cameo and far beneath her at this point. I'm sure there's more to it than that. She'll probably end up a love interest of some sort, and hopefully not drowned in oil.

Men in Black 3 reunites Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones as agents J and K. When a villanious alien(played by Jemaine Clement) goes back in time to kill K, agent J travels back and teams up with a younger version of K(Josh Brolin) to put a stop to it.

MIB 3 is set to begin principle photography in just a few days in New York, lasting until May of next year.

Trailer Time: Tamara Drewe, starring Gemma Arterton

I'll be the first to admit that I know next to nothing about Tamara Drewe the movie. I know a bit more about the comic strip series it's based on, written by Posy Simmonds. Created in 2005, it follows a shy girl who returns to her childhood hometown and transforms herself into a stunning bombshell, which turns her neighborhood upside down.  The comic is based in part on the 19th century novel, Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy. The film is being directed by Stephen Frears, who I'm hoping will bounce back after last year's disastrous film, Cheri. As for the trailer? Eh, doesn't really seem like my cup of tea, but anything starring the sexy Gemma Arterton is going to get my attention.
