Sylvester Stallone Confirms 'Rambo: Last Blood' Films after 'Creed'

Here's the thing about Sylvester Stallone nowadays; so much of his career is about turning back the clock. Even with The Expendables films he's essentially reliving old glories, and a comedy like Grudge Match was all about playing off his Rocky days. But now after what has been a few years of speculation, Stallone is taking a more direct approach by confirming that a fifth Rambo movie is on the way, coming right after he reprises his old Rocky Balboa role.

Stallone took to Twitter to give fans a look at what is shaping up to be a very busy 2015. He's headed to Philly now to begin work on Creed, a spinoff in which he'll again lace up the gloves as Rocky Balboa. The film has Rocky reluctantly agreeing to train the talented grandson of his late friend, Apollo Creed.  Michael B. Jordan stars as the younger Creed, with Tessa Thompson co-starring and Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station) directing.

Once that's over, Stallone will get armed up for Rambo: Last Blood, confirming that to be the franchise's title. This one has been in the works forever and has seen numerous plotlines (including a sci-fi based one) rumored, but the recent update from Splendid Films seemed to nail it a few months ago...

With 'Rambo V' Sylvester Stallone returns in his iconic role. This time he goes up against a Mexican cartel. Stallone, who has also written the screenplay, describes the new Rambo as his version of 'No Country for Old Men.' Like the last film, 'Rambo V' is produced by Avi Lerner ("The Expendables 1-3").

No word on if Stallone will also direct that one as some have guessed. We do know that it will be followed-up by the gangster flick, Scarpa, which Stallone will star in for director Brad Furman (The Lincoln Lawyer) and Goodfellas screenwriter Nick Pileggi. The film will center on mob hitman Gregory Scarpa, who claimed to have committed more than 50 murders for the Colombo crime family before turning FBI informant in 1980. He also supposedly had a hand in helping the FBI crack the Mississippi Burning case by locating the bodies of the slain civil rights activists.

Rumor: Naomi Watts, Chris Evans, and Li Bingbing Sought for 'The Expendabelles'; Stallone and Willis Confirmed

Maybe it was the leak that saw The Expendables 3 viewed by millions weeks before it hit theaters, but Sylvester Stallone's action bonanza (clearly the best of the franchise) tanked hard at the box office..domestically, anyway. Internationally it was a powerhouse, with more than $160M of its $204M total coming from overseas markets. And while there is still some buzz of a fourth film, what's likely to come first is the female-led spinoff, The Expendabelles, and some new names are being rumored for the cast.

Now take all of this with a shot of side eye because the story emerged at The Tracking Board, which says offers have been sent to Naomi Watts, Alan Rickman (?), Chris Evans (??), Marcia Gay Harden, and Li Bingbing. They also "confirm" that Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis will be reprising their Expendables roles, which sounds suspicious given the blow up between the two during The Expendables 3 filming. Remember how Willis walked out on production because of a salary dispute, only to have Stallone rewrite the script and trash his character for the entire movie? Yeah. And with Stallone producing Expendebelles it doesn't seem likely he'd be begging Willis to return.

Anyway, we'll see if any of this shakes out. These are just offers and any of them could (and probably will) refuse, just as Meryl Streep and Sigourney Weaver did. Robert Luketic (Killers) is directing from a script by the Legally Blonde duo of Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith.

New Trailer for Ensemble Drama 'Reach Me' starring Sylvester Stallone, Thomas Jane, and Terry Crews

What you may not know about Sylvester Stallone is that he really has an artist's soul. Sure, in the movies he's either beating somebody's head in with his fists or blowing them to pieces with machine guns the size of small planets, but that's not who he is really. And in the upcoming inspirational drama Reach Me he gets to show that softer side we rarely get to see, for better or worse.

All the B-leaguers in Hollywood make up the Reach Me ensemble, which centers on a group of troubled people who are all helped by a mysterious self-help guru's book. Nobody seems to know who the author is, though, or that he has problems of his own. Tom Berenger, Kevin Connolly, Kyra Sedgwick, Nelly, Cary Elwes, Thomas Jane, Terry Crews, Danny Trejo, Kelsey Grammer, Lauren Cohan, Ryan Kwanten and Tom Sizemore star, with John Herzfield (15 Minutes) directing.

Reach Me hits VOD and gets a limited theatrical run beginning November 21st.

Sylvester Stallone Eyed for Action-Comedy 'Cold Warriors'

Sylvester Stallone has made quite a few stinkers over the course of his career, but the worst are when he intentionally tries to blend his macho action-hero mystique with his questionable comedic gifts. Movies like The Expendables are funny without trying too hard to be so, but a dog of a buddy comedy like Stop! Or my Mom will Shoot is legendarily awful. And now Stallone is reportedly circling another such laugher in Cold Warriors, a film that combines video games and Vladimir Putin. Well, sorta.

According to a story at The Tracking Board, Stallone is set to star in Cold Warriors, based on a script by Todd Berger. Berger is the multi-talented guy who wrote, directed, and starred in the hilarious apocalyptic comedy It's a Disaster, plus 2003's The Scenesters, so he's someone who may be able to make a fairly awful premise work out better than it sounds. And in this case Cold Warriors would have Stallone as an ex-CIA agent who is reactivated to complete an old mission in Russia. Unfortunately, his new stepson, a video game nerd, is along for the ride.

The film was originally titled "Back in the USSR" when it was making the rounds a couple of years ago, but I guess they figured it sounded too much like a Yakov Smirnoff sketch.

Review: 'The Expendables 3' Starring Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Mel Gibson, and More

Through two movies Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables has been nothing but unfulfilled promises. The mandate for the franchise was pretty simple: gather the greatest action heroes of the '80s and indulge in every silly cliché the genre had to offer. Action movies today are pretty terrible but their stars are even worse, so it should have been easy to have fun hyping the old guard while bashing the current one. For a lot of reasons Stallone was never able to make things click, but with The Expendables 3 he finally gets it right. This is the explosive old school flick we have been waiting for all this time.

One of the major problems was the bloated cast never really added anything of value. What good were the creaky bones of Chuck Norris and Jean Claude Van Damme? Especially when there were so many characters neither really did much, anyway? The Expendables 3 fixes that with the inclusion of Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Kelsey Grammer (!!!!) and Mel Gibson, all of whom attack their roles like they've been waiting for just this opportunity. Even the screenplay, which is rife with all the terrible one-liners we'd be disappointed not to hear, actually resembles a real story. Wha??? Heaven forbid somebody remember to give these muscled behemoths something to do.

And what they do is make blowing stuff up and killing folks look like more fun than it should. A daring train assault springs free Doc (Snipes), an original Expendable locked away for years after a botched mission. He's keen with a blade (how ironic that Blade is good with a blade! Oh, Sly aren't you clever?) and makes good with the quips, which makes him perfect to rejoin Barney (Stallone) and his team of grunting old mercs. And this time it's perfectly okay to call these guys a bunch of old fogeys because that's essentially what this film is all about. After taking down some random, vaguely Middle Eastern bad guy, the Expendables are shot to crap by international arms dealer Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), leaving Hale Caesar (Terry Crews) in a coma. Stonebanks, who probably has the worst name in Expendables history, has an old beef with Barney that stretches back to the group's formation. He's dangerous; so dangerous that Barney decides to leave his aging team in the dust and recruit some new blood.

The junior league of modern hot shots consists of failed-Hercules Kellan Lutz, sexy UFC champ Ronda Rousey, boxer Victor Ortiz, and Glen Powell. With the exception of Rousey the new squad isn't nearly as interesting as the old crew and watching their recruitment is a serious drag. But it does afford us the chance to see Banderas as the chatty pest, Galgo, a mercenary nobody seems to want on their team. Banderas knows the score on movies like this (he was just in Machete Kills) and he's never been funnier. While he's too old for it now but he would have made for one Hell of a Deadpool twenty years ago, based on this badass and hilarious performance alone.

Whereas Harrison Ford, yes Han Solo himself, isn't given a whole lot to do he has a good time while doing it. Whooping and hollering while manning a rescue copter, with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jet Li spraying bullets dementedly by his side, it's easy to see that this is what The Expendables always should have been. Another bright spot is Gibson, clearly indulging in yet another chance to play a ridiculous bad guy (he was also in Machete Killsin a similar role) who resembles the maniacal Martin Riggs if he went full-on nuts.  It's great stuff, slickly directed by Patrick Hughes who keeps the pace moving while edging out the gory stuff that would have upset the MPAA apple cart. For once the PG-13 rating didn't seem like an obstacle to be overcome, and that's with more action than in the first two films combined. The final sequence alone, a massive tank onslaught where every Expendable struts their stuff, is a cornucopia of violence, terrible jokes, and amazing vehicular feats that would make the Fast & Furious cast blush. Jason Statham (kind of in the background this time) and Snipes measure their...knives...in the middle of a firefight, Banderas hits on Rousey while she just hits people, and Stallone is still somehow faster than artillery fire. Even the final showdown lives up to expectations with Stallone delivering one truly amazing, groan-worthy catchphrase that is destined to end up on t-shirts. In short, it's pretty awesome.

So what are the odds of there being an Expendables 4? Hopefully there won't be any passing of the torch going on but with Stallone finally finding the winning formula these can go on as long as his aging bones will allow. There are still too many stars out there who need their moment in the napalm. One guy you won't ever see is Bruce Willis, who had a very public spat with Stallone over money and quit the movie after appearing in the first two. For a good time, count the number of occasions in which a character calls Willis' character, Mr. Church, an a-hole or disparages him in some way. Clearly the smoke has not cleared on that feud and hopefully the smoke hasn't cleared on The Expendables just yet.

The Honest Trailer for 'The Expendables' is a Little Too Perfect

When Sylvester Stallone first started putting together The Expendables he made it clear what his mandate for it was. Action heroes of today were soft compared to the rugged stars of his glory years, and the plan was to bring back some of the tough guy machismo of the '80s into the present. But as he rounded up a literal army of aging stars, which was admittedly pretty cool to see altogether (it's not so cool anymore), he forgot to prove exactly why those old movies were so awesome to begin with. The result was The Expendables, a film with a lot of star power and the worst aspects of the bad action movies from yesteryear, and only a few of the good qualities.

Just in time for this weekend's The Expendables 3, the Screen Junkies have delivered another of their hilarious Honest Trailers, this time for The Expendables. And they pretty much nail EVERYTHING the film got wrong. While I find the awful one-liners kind of endearing, the plot is ridiculous by any measure, and there's no excuse for the severe lack of action. But what's really funny about this are the little details which mainly revolve around Stallone's facial hair and incomprehensible dialogue. The description of Terry Crews nearly made me piss myself so I'll leave that for you to discover. And dude, I totally forgot Charisma Carpenter was in the first one! Damn these movies treat women like crap.

The Summer Gets Explosive in 'The Expendables 3' Final Trailer

One thing that can definitively be stated about the first couple of 'Expendables' flicks is that they don't hold a lot of mystery. It's pretty obvious these movies are about bad one-liners, big guns, big muscles, big explosions, and probably big egos (just ask Bruce Willis!) with so many action movie legends in one place. But The Expendables 3 does have one gigantic question mark surrounding it, and that's whether the film will be affected by the recent online leak of the entire movie. The same thing happened with The Expendables and it still did pretty well, but it does throw a potential monkey wrench in Sylvester Stallone's plans to end the trilogy on top.

It's perhaps more crucial than ever now for the marketing push to get ramped up a few gears, and that's exactly what the latest trailer does. Stallone and his version of the Dirty Dozen are back with a few "new" faces like Wesley Snipes (who really wants a Blade 4), Harrison Ford, Kelsey Grammer, Mel Gibson, Antonio Banderas, Kellan Lutz, and Ronda Rousey. This is more of what you'd expect but in the midst of stuff getting blowed up there are a few gems, like Rousey kicking butt in a sexy dress and Ford having an "Oops" moment. This should be a lot of un.

Also starring Jason Statham, Terry Crews, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, The Expendables 3 opens August 15th.

Sylvester Stallone to Star as Infamous Mobster in Brad Furman's 'Scarpa'; May Appear in 'The Expendabelles'

A film on infamous mobster Gregory Scarpa, who became known as the "Grim Reaper" for the dozens of murders he committed over three decades, has been in the works over at Millennium Films for years. At one point Bruce Willis was eyed to take the title role in Scarpa, but recently it was his ex-buddy in The Expendables, Sylvester Stallone, who began circling the part. And now with Stallone on board the film is now moving forward with Brad Furman coming on to bring the mob assassin's life to the big screen.

Furman helped sparked the McConaissance with The Lincoln Lawyer a couple of years ago, only to follow it up with the abysmal gambling flick Runner Runner. Scarpa already sounds promising with Stallone and Furman on board but then you factor in a script by Nick Pileggi, the Oscar nominated screenwriter of Goodfellas, and there's even greater potential. Scarpa was a notorious hitman for the Colombo crime family, allegedly committing more than 50 murders until he became an FBI informant in 1980. Although the FBI continues to deny it, a popular theory is Scarpa helped them locate the bodies of three civil rights activists murdered in Mississippi by the KKK.

Filming is set to begin in Bulgaria later this year, and that happens to be the same place where 'Expendables' female spinoff, The Expendabelles, will be shooting. Some sources are reporting director Robert Luketic's claims of Stallone and Harrison Ford making an appearance but until the ladies are cast it's probably early to assume anything. We've heard talk of Meryl Streep, Milla Jojovich, Cameron Diaz, Zoe Bell, and others joining as candidates with nothing confirmed yet. [TheWrap]

Sylvester Stallone, Nelly, and Terry Crews Look for Answers in 'Reach Me' Trailer

"There's no stopping someone that will stop at nothing", begins the trailer for Reach Me, a dramatic ensemble that features Sylvester Stallone in the rare role that doesn't require him to blow anything up or punch someone in the face. It's been nearly two decades since Stallone put on his drama hat in Cop Land, a film that was ripped at the time but has since been recognized as one of the actor's finer performances....at least compared to his latter Rocky, Rambo, and The Expendables efforts. And now Stallone is ready to show what he can do again but the trailer suggests the film may not be up to par.

Stallone is surrounded by a cast that immediately pegs this as something headed for Redbox with the quickness. Kelsey Grammer and Terry Crews (Sly's buds in The Expendables 3), Cary Elwes, Thomas Jane, Ryan Kwanten, Tom Sizemore, Tom Berenger, Kevin Connolly, The Walking Dead's Lauren Cohan, Agents of SHIELD's Elizabeth Henstridge, Kyra Sedgewick, ex-New York Giants fullback Jarrod Bunch, Nelly, and Danny Aiello star as a group of people who are all connected by a self help guru's book, but little do they know he's just a reclusive former football coach with his own problems.

John Herzfeld (15 Minutes) directed and wrote the script so if it looks like a poor man's Crash then he's the one to hold responsible. Reach Me will open on October 24th.

Sylvester Stallone Gearing Up for Fifth 'Rambo' Movie

The last time there was talk of another Rambo project it was when a television series was being developed, one that would see someone other than Sylvester Stallone take on the iconic character. That was nearly a year ago and with no movement at all on it, it looks like plans are again moving forward on a fifth Rambo movie.

Splendid Film dropped the news earlier today they've acquired the rights to Rambo V, which Stallone will write the script for as well as star in, presumably for the last time but you never know. Here's a translation of the German company's statement:

With 'Rambo V' Sylvester Stallone returns in his iconic role. This time he goes up against a Mexican cartel. Stallone, who has also written the screenplay, describes the new Rambo as his version of 'No Country for Old Men.' Like the last film, 'Rambo V' is produced by Avi Lerner ("The Expendables 1-3").

This would be Stallone's return to the character after 2008's Rambo, which at the time seemed like a fitting end for the franchise. But when it cleared over $100M worldwide and was relatively inexpensive, that opened up the door for at least one more. And we've heard numerous ideas for what the story could be about, including Stallone talking about it as a "passing the torch" film.  At other times Stallone has shot down the idea of doing more so who knows what his motivation will be like a few months from now. Comparing this upcoming project to the Coen Brothers' Best Picture-winner is a good way to guarantee a lot of attention, so clearly the intention is there at this moment to send Rambo into battle one last time.

New 'The Expendables 3' Trailer Goes on One Last Ride

The summer is here and that means Sylvester Stallone has emptied out his Rolodex for The Expendables 3, the third and final entry in the big guns, big muscles, bigger explosions flick. The usual crew of Jason Statham, Terry Crews, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, and Arnold Schwarzenegger are back again, joined by Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Ronda Rousey, Kellan Lutz, and Kelsey Grammer (!?!?). What's the plot? Who knows? The first two movies didn't really have much of a story behind them, so why attempt something new now?

The latest trailer certainly doesn't offer much except the undeniable coolness of seeing Wesley Snipes back in action and alongside Stallone for the first time since Demolition Man. Mel Gibson is the bad guy here as that's apparently all anyone will hire him for, as a former Expendable who has gone to the dark side. Looks like the old guard will be rushing to the aid of the young upstarts, an aspect Stallone probably requested himself, but not before dropping lots of bad one-liners and firing lots of oversized weapons. Patrick Hughes is directing and it does have a more polished look than the previous films.

The Expendables 3 opens August 15th.

New Roll Call Trailer for 'The Expendables 3'

"Hang on for one last ride". Could this be the last we see of Sylvester Stallone and the aging action stars of The Expendables? Are they finally hanging up their machine guns and fatigues and putting the franchise out to pasture? With the last film banking more than the first, and seemingly no end to the big names looking to cash a quick pay day, it's not likely The Expendables 3 will be the last of anything.

After revealing 16 character posters that looked like weird yearbook photos yesterday, the first teaser trailer has been released. Basically it's a roll call showing off the star power this one brings to bear, although it's still crazy that Kelsey Grammer and Kellan Lutz are considered on the same level as everyone else. Schwarzenegger. Stallone. Ford. Gibson. Statham. Snipes. Li. Lutz.  Yeah, one of these things is not like the other.

The plot involves arms trading, old grudges, and some other nonsense nobody cares about. When's the next explosion and bad one-liner? The Expendables 3 opens August 15th.

'The Expendables 3' Goes Big with 16 New Character Posters

Guys like Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Jason Statham can't do much on their own anymore, but when they unite for The Expendables everything just comes together....sortof like The A-Team. The first two flicks in the tough-guy franchise have delivered exactly what they promised: over-sized action, and so it makes sense they'd go full-on overkill with the release of 16 posters for The Expendables 3.

These aren't your standard one-sheets of the expanding (both in cast size and waist lines) roster of heroes, instead giving us behind-the-scenes style looks at a cast consisting of the returning Stallone, Statham, Schwarzenegger, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Dolph Lundgren, and Jet Li. Also enlisting for the next Dirty Dozen mission are MMA champ Ronda Rousey, Wesley Snipes, Harrison Ford (still !!!), Glen Powell, Kelsey Grammer (still ???), boxer Victor Ortiz, Antonio Banderas, Kellan Lutz, and Mel Gibson. Gibson, of course, is playing the bad guy who happens to be a former partner of Stallone's Barney Ross.

The Expendables 3 is directed by Patrick Hughes and opens August 15th. Hopefully this means a trailer is right around the corner. [Comingsoon/IGN/Joblo/Collider]

Review: 'Grudge Match' Starring Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro

There's something that feels so right about Sylvester Stallone and a boxing movie. Seriously, the Rocky star has always been at his absolute best when starring in films where the squared circle features prominently, even when he wasn't in tip-top fighting shape. And that streak continues with Grudge Match, which puts Stallone in the ring with fellow boxing warhorse Robert De Niro, honoring and stripping away at their pugilist pasts.

One can't blame the studio for hyping this as some sort of Rocky vs. Raging Bull showdown, but there's an actual plot to be found beneath all the obvious Ben-Gay jokes. Stallone is Henry "Razor" Sharp with De Niro as his longtime rival Billy "The Kid" McDonnen, who fought in two epic matches 30 years earlier, each winning one. But the rubber match never happened as Razor suddenly up and quit the fight game, choosing to live a quiet life in blue collar anonymity. Kid has hated him for it ever since, even as he's moved on to own a successful chain of businesses cashing in on his name. When the obnoxious Dante (a game Kevin Hart), the son of Razor's old promoter, shows up with a plan to make some quick helping out on a boxing video game, the ensuing brawl between Razor and Kid is captured on YouTube and goes viral. There's money to be wrung from these old pros yet, and after some arm-twisting Razor is convinced to come back and battle Kid one last time.

Stallone and De Niro, on the other hand? It's doubtful they put up much of a fight agreeing to this film. Let's be honest, neither has been all that choosey over the years but they both find something in these characters worth investing in. Stallone seems to be channeling the same beleaguered pride he brought to those later Rocky flicks, while De Niro is having fun as a hopeless braggart looking to prove his alpha male status hasn't been dulled by old age. Speaking of old age, can we call a moratorium on grouchy supporting turns by Alan Arkin? Here he plays Razor's Burgess Meredith-style trainer (all he needs is the cock-eye and appropriate snarl) in dire economic straits.
Fortunately it's not all road work and punching the heavy bag, there are plenty of secrets that emerge to complicate matters. Kim Basinger, still gorgeous as ever, shows up as the woman both men fell in love with, and Jon Bernthal plays Kid's adult son who only recently learned his father's identity.

Unless you're already punch drunk from blows to the head it's probably obvious that broad-minded director Peter Segal isn't going to focus too much on anything other than getting his two stars in the ring. The subplots don't really click, Basinger lacks chemistry with both actors, and the rapid fire jokes range from comments on De Niro's jiggling man boobs to Arkin's wildly offensive racial comments towards Hart. More of these hit than miss, though, and one can't deny the twinkle in the eye of Stallone and De Niro, especially when they finally start throwing blows. Ok, so the fight itself is slower than cold molasses and lacks energy but were we expecting Rocky II? All that matters is that we give a care about who gets their hand raised in victory. Grudge Match may not have the goods to be a champion, but it's certainly a worthy contender.

Check out the First Official Teaser Trailer for 'The Expendables 3'!

If there's been a mantra for The Expendables franchise from the very beginning, it's "go big or go home". And we've seen them do exactly that with the sequel; bigger names, bigger explosions, bigger muscles, and bigger egos in the case of Bruce Willis. So why should we expect anything less for The Expendables 3?

The first teaser trailer is here and it doesn't offer much, but does it really have to? What it does do is show off the ensemble of action heroes with Sly Stallone and the usual favorites coming back for more, plus some stellar new additions in Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes, Ronda Rousey, Antonio Banderas, Kelsey Grammer and Kellan Lutz. Wait, wha? Kelsey Grammer!?!? As for the plot? Who knows? The whole whistling thing and walking slowly with guns is cool enough, story be damned.

The Expendables 3 is directed by Patrick Hughes and opens August 15th 2014.

Review: 'Homefront', Starring Jason Statham and James Franco

James Franco played a creepy drug lord earlier this year in Spring Breakers to great effect. He has a very similar role in Homefront, though a lot of the creepiness is substituted for angry yelling. Sylvester Stallone writes a script that's aimed at cramming as many testosterone-fueled confrontations as possible without giving the film a backbone to hold it up when it falters.

Phil Broker (Jason Statham) is a DEA agent who quits after a drug ring bust doesn't end happily. That's the only reason given for Broker's "retirement" and it doesn't really make sense, but the script's by Sylvester Stallone, so apparently we're supposed to let it slide.

Broker ends up in a very small town in Louisiana where everyone practically bullies him or his daughter Maddy (newcomer Izabela Vidovic). Honestly, everyone Statham comes across wants to either threaten him or beat him up. So much for small-town hospitality.

Cassie Bodine (Kate Bosworth) is angry that her son gets taken down by Broker's daughter when the kid bullies her at school for no reason. Pissed off that no one's doing anything about it, she seeks help from her brother Gator (James Franco) to put some fear in Broker. Everything changes when Gator finds out that Broker is ex-DEA and he and his girlfriend Sheryl (Winona Ryder) plan a way to hand Broker over to the drug lord he took down on his last case so that Broker doesn't find out about Gator's own meth-cooking ways.

The main cast is impressive, but the story is lacking. So why is that actors like Winona Ryder and Kate Bosworth are in this film? These are two talented women cast in a movie that undermines their talents as well as their presence. They're left as side characters who don't do anything for the movie as a whole and we're left sitting there wondering why the hell they're in this movie in the first place.

Ryder looks great for her age, but her character tries to pass for a girl half her age in attitude and in representation. Bosworth's character is quick-tempered, but there's no real bite to her aggression, and beyond that there's really nowhere left for her character to grow.

Statham plays the usual kick-ass character that he's played in the past, though with a baseball hat on this time around. The main problem with the movie is that no one in it can go up against Statham and legitimately win. Everyone in the film gets their asses handed to them and not once do we fear for Statham's life because we know that he can take the person down. Franco isn't scary enough or physically equal to rise to the occasion. Even the final showdown is pretty anticlimactic.

As mentioned earlier, Franco's character in Spring Breakers is much more appealing in terms of being the creepy drug dealer he should have probably been in in this film. In fairness, the story is weak and the script doesn't seem to want to give time to expand on the world its created.

Instead, it jumps from point A to point B methodically and without any real backbone. There are hints to Statham and Rachelle Lefevre's characters becoming romantically involved. There are instances of character depth when Vidovic talks about the pain of missing her mother. In the end though, these things never amount to anything other than minutes of screen time.

While the story does lack and actors are underutilized, the action is fantastic. Director Gary Fleder puts more focus on the hand-to-hand combat instead of blowing things up, and it looks great. It's the only thing that's worth any merit in a film that's full of missed opportunities. And if you're a fan of Statham and Franco, Homefront is a movie best served on DVD.

Review: 'Escape Plan' Starring Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger

If this were twenty years ago, Escape Plan would be pretty awesome. Oh wait, no it wouldn't, because then audiences would be expecting the explosive big guns and bigger pecs action a film starring Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger should provide. Even at an advanced stage of their careers (and physical shape), they can still open a cinematic can of whoop ass in The Expendables, and individually they've done a pretty good job of reliving their youthful glory days. But Escape Plan, which sees them sharing top billing for the first time ever, is a creaky and nonsensical prison drama that emphasizes their brains over brawn. Who in the world wants to watch that?

Stallone is really the lead guy here as Ray Breslin, a security expert and modern day Houdini whose job is to go undercover in maximum security prisons, then break out to expose their flaws. Yeah, it's all sorts of stupid, and the suggestion that he's some sort of genius is less than convincing.  His mental acumen is thrown further into question when he's approached by a shady CIA liaison who offers $5M for him to break into an off-the-books facility full of the world's worst criminals. Breslin's team, which consists of the lovely Amy Ryan and 50 Cent (as a menacing tech geek!) are skeptical, as anybody with half a brain should be. Vincent D'Oonfrio plays Breslin's twitchy boss, who sees a quick pay day and pushes him to take it. Although it's clearly a dangerous set up, Breslin's ego leads to him taking the job, and it isn't long before he's kidnapped and shipped off to a prison he doesn't recognize. Oops. Probably should have put that intellect to better use, Hoss.

Waking up in a glass cell like something out of Silence of the Lambs, Breslin soon comes to realize that he's actually a prisoner with no easy way out. For a facility that's supposed to be state of the art, boasting more than $1B of impenetrable security, it barely reaches above the level of HBO's Oz. But what's perhaps most hilarious is a suggestion that the facility, a blatant human rights violation if there ever was one, was designed as a back-up because the CIA had ended extraordinary rendition. Oh yeah? That email must be in my spam folder.  This isn't a smart enough movie to really go down that road, nor its thin allusions to our country's reliance on for-profit prisons. There are documentaries for that stuff, guys. Somebody throw a grenade or something.

In his first legit acting role since he pretended to govern California, Schwarzenegger is the only one who seems to notice what a piece of schlock this movie actually is. He plays Emil Rottmeyer, a convict Yoda who agrees to help Breslin mount a prison break. In the process he becomes the target of a dainty/maniacal prison warden played by Jim Caviezel. We know he's crazy because he collects butterflies and carries a handkerchief, sure signs of mental instability.

Directed by Mikael Hafstron, the film has all the energy of a bloated cadaver, and stinks just as bad. There was a time when Hafstrom was a director on the rise, helming the effective hotel thriller 1408, but lately his films have been a total snore. His bland direction hamstrings what should be entertaining exchanges between Stallone and Schwarzenegger, but instead most of their early encounters prove underwhelming. Even during the one time they come to blows, Hafstrom shoots it in such a haphazard way that it's a little too obvious neither man is really there and are probably down the street having lunch. Not even Hafstrom is able to completely nullify the action heroes' easy chemistry, though, and once we start getting them in the same frame later on the film begins to improve somewhat.

Stallone isn't what one would call the most emotive of actors, but he's practically comatose as Breslin, and Hafstrom's constant close-ups on his waxy face doesn't help. Schwarzenegger is better, and it's good to see him not only acting his age, but putting his considerable size (he's still massive) to good use in presenting an air of authority. It would have been interesting to see how the results would have been if the roles were reversed, as they were in the film's earliest stages of development.  Other than Schwarzenegger, the only one having any fun is Caviezel, who years after The Passion of the Christ, gets more religious puns than any actor should be allowed. Either the role was written for him or Bill Maher turned it down.

Logic is repeatedly thrown out the window as the two inmates plot their escape, which doesn't seem any more difficult than what Breslin experienced before. For some reason the warden doesn't seem to wonder why the two biggest troublemakers keep whispering and plotting stuff. Isn't it kinda obvious? And yet the story is needlessly complicated, overstuffed with filler material to pad out a lagging two-hour runtime. Ryan and 50 Cent's characters are pointless, and a subplot involving a mysterious criminal with a bounty on his head seems tacked on. Worse is the unfortunate Sam Neill as a prison doctor suffering from an ethical dilemma, and literally has to look up the Hippocratic Oath as a reminder. By the time Hafstrom remembers who his stars are and begins cranking up the action it's far too late. Any chance we get to see Stallone and Schwarzenegger should be nothing less than memorable, even in a terrible movie, but Escape Plan is an utterly forgettable entry on both actors' resumes.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone Fight in First 'Escape Plan' Clip

We've seen Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone team up over the last couple of years in The Expendables, but how many times have we seen them brawl? Well....you kind of get to see it in this first clip from Escape Plan, in which they play both play prisoners inside a maximum security prison. A keen eye on the editing will show that most of it was done by stunt doubles, but left to the imagination it's cool to see these two aging war horses come to blows.

Directed by Mikael Hafstrom, the film centers on Ray Breslin (Stallone), a security expert framed and sent into an impenetrable prison of his own design. Needing help to escape, he turns to longtime inmate Emil Rottmayer (Schwarzenegger), and this footage seems to be of the first phase in their plan.

If Escape Plan starred anybody else we'd be gauging exactly how much it would go for in the DVD bin, but instead we'll see it in theaters on October 18th. Check out the clip below, and if you're dying for more there's also a couple of TV spot.
