DVD Review: 'The Wonder Years' The Complete Series

The first thing I said upon receiving StarVista/TimeLife's gorgeous packaging for The Wonder Years Complete Series ($249.99) boxed set was "this is too beautiful to open." And I wasn't kidding. It sat on my shelf for days without being touched, eyed from across the room like a glistening trophy too special to be handled. The 26-Disc set comes in a replica school locker (with functioning lock), with magnet stickers for personal customization. On its own it would make for a perfect keepsake and conversation starter. But that would be depriving myself of one of my childhood favorites. The Wonder Years had a profound impact on me and millions of others growing up, but can the set live up to the incredible demand by fans? And does the show still hold up over time?

Well, the answer is "yes" and "heck yes". Included with the 26 discs are a whopping 23 hours of bonus content, which include the expected number of featurettes, commentaries (including one on Kevin and Winnie's first kiss), and B-roll footage. But you also get the incredible cast reunion (interestingly, it's Jason Hervey who may have had the best post-career). Authentic class binders, notebooks, and other items  will thrust you deeper into Kevin Arnold's school experience during the turbulent '60s and '70s. You can tell that a lot of love and care went into the entire package. While the remastering isn't perfect, that nostalgic "home movie" quality remains and looks terrific. Nearly all 300 classic rock tracks have been secured to keep the experience as authentic as possible. It must have been a costly effort securing all of those licenses but it was well worth it. Most other DVD packages swap in new music or bland renditions and hope you don't notice, but fans of The Wonder Years would never stand for that here. The music is too essential.

But what about the show itself? I was only eleven years old when the show debuted and I remember it fondly. It was one of the few times I stayed up late because it was after the 1988 Super Bowl, and right away it was obvious The Wonder Years was unlike any other show. Sentimental and nostalgic without being glossy or sugary, the show was brutally tough and instantly relatable. While every kid of a certain age could see something of themselves in Kevin Arnold (Fred Savage), they also secretly wished they could have a best friend like Paul Pfeiffer (Josh Saviano) and a girl in their life like Winnie Cooper (Danica McKellar). Everybody loved Winnie, although I will admit to always having a thing for Becky Slater (played by Danica's sister, Crystal), who memorably punched Kevin in the gut and became his part-time nemesis for awhile. "Friends? I'll give you friends"! The show was able to tackle serious issues (season four episode "The Accident" is still powerful) and show that the problems we face are universal. There's a reason The Wonder Years won its first Emmy after only a handful of episodes. What's a little bit surprising is how well they have held up over the years, especially the bittersweet final episode, presented here in its original broadcast form. Talk about a finale that perfectly encapsulated how daring the past six seasons had been, it was a truly daring move to not give fans the "happily ever after" ending we were all expecting. The Wonder Years was a show that touched a lot of hearts, and through this set will continue to touch a lot more.

Review: 'Axel: The Biggest Little Hero' with Ed Asner, Matthew Lillard, and George Takei

I’m a big cartoon guy, I still watch cartoons on Saturday morning and have my TiVo record all the current series on Cartoon Network. I’m pretty open to watching animated films also. Even though I’m open I’m also pretty critical of them. Now when this new one came to me I was a bit surprised. I’ve never heard of the studio or the movie at all. I was sitting here thinking just who or what is Axel The Biggest Little Hero standing on top of robot bird with sunglasses on. Well I just popped it in and gave it a watch.

So here we have Axel The Biggest Little Hero as a pretty simple hero adventure story. What’s interesting with this is that it has a very '80s feel in terms of howcompletely all over the place the world and characters look, yet it is never explained. The story is about a young boy named Axel who considers himself a hero while the rest of his little town just see a rambunctious nuisance. To be completely honest the whole set up of this story felt very much like the early parts of Naruto (a long running Japanese anime). One day while Axel was “saving” a small bug on a branch he has a vision of a mystical far away grove of Cacti that could save his people from ever worrying about hunger. He’s told this by the voice of their great hero, Bunta, that he must complete this quest to become a true hero. Being that he fell from that branch and got hurt he then spends the time as he heals up telling everyone what he saw and they all just roll their eyes at his claims. Axel then decides to pack up and go off on this journey into the unknown to find this grove. Following him on this journey is his best friend, Jono.

Honestly, the main thing that's surprising to me is just how good it looks. There have been some CG films in the last year, some even released in theaters with modeling, character design, lighting, textures and such that are just so bland and subpar, almost like cut-scenes for Playstation 2-era games.  This movie though is quite interesting to look at with what I see as a keen eye for detail, characters, and settings.  The one thing that really holds this back is that the story doesn’t seem to bemade for a movie at all. There are parts of the story that are very slow and drags, and feels more suited to an animated series.  Another thing lacking is the big bad villain of the story. While it’s a great visual there isn't a true foe that is going to try and stop Axel from getting his ultimate prize. Instead it's more of a situation Axel falls into while on the journey, and that lacking hurts the story.

In the end , while I think the story will be really interesting for younger kids to watch I feel it’s going to leave everyone wanting. The story in all felt like watching that Clone Wars movie that was just the first three episode of the show. You’ll get to end and feel like "That's it? But where’s my ending"? Who knows if we’ll ever get it? It might just end up being something you can put on to keep the kids quiet for an hour.

DVD Review: 'Sweetwater' Starring January Jones

January Got a Gun. Or at least that would be a more interesting title for the moribund Western, Sweetwater, which somehow manages to screw up having Mad Men's sexy star January Jones as a gun-toting harbinger of vengeance. But then again writing/directing duo Noah and Logan Miller show utter incompetence merely getting the look and feel of the Old West right, and their haphazard attempts to add a touch of comic madness leave this version of the tumbleweed era totally flavorless.

Jones' ice queen demeanor may work on AMC's hit show but they make for a dull and lifeless heroine. In a grim and ugly New Mexico border town, she plays Sarah, a steely ex-prostitute now hooked up with Miguel (Eduardo Noriega), a wimpy landowner who absolutely doesn't wear the pants in that relationship. When he runs afoul of maniacal and murderous Mormon priest (Jason Isaacs) and winds up taking a dirt nap, Sarah is left alone to fend for herself, which she's more than capable of doing.

Literally dancing to the beat of his own drum is Ed Harris as Sheriff Jackson, who makes his comical entrances twirling like a ballerina before kicking the old lawman in the ass. It's a far cry from the more traditional gunslinger roles we've seen Harris play in the past, and perhaps is inspired in some small way by the off-kilter anti-genre flick Walker he starred in years ago. As the Sheriff and Josiah trade religious verse (and acts of violence) on their way to an inevitable showdown, Harris and Isaacs go waaaay over the edge in their performances to spruce up fairly generic roles. It may suit the off-beat tone of the film somewhat, but all of that is negated by how stiff and disinterested Jones seems to be. Her character suffers the most of them all; she's a town pariah, her husband's been killed, she becomes pregnant, gets raped, and much more happens to her along the way. But do we see any of that reflected in Jones' face or demeanor? She misplays nearly every emotional beat; even her quest for violent retribution is strangely dispassionate. Jones does get one terrific scene, though, using an umbrella to penetrate a would-be "peeping tom".

The west has never been less gritty, less pulpy than it is here, with the locale fading into the background when it should be a character in its own right. A more skillful hand could add a touch of stylized flair to the violence, and perhaps ratchet up the deadly slow pace which makes Sweetwater's 90 minute runtime feel like an epic wagon train.

Sweetwater hits DVD/Blu-Ray on Tuesday, December 31st.

'Gravity' Tie-In Short Film to be Released On the DVD/Blu-Ray

Alfonso Cuaron's long-awaited sci-fi thriller Gravity is in theaters right now, and critics have already judged it as a groundbreaking masterpiece. It currently sits at 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, and my own review was certainly laden with a few superlatives. The story is pretty simple, with George Clooney and Sandra Bullock as astronauts attempting to get home after being left adrift in deep space. But there is more to their journey than we get to see on the big screen, so if you don't want to have any part of the film spoiled it's probably a good idea to stop reading now.

Jonas Cuaron, Alfonso's son and co-writer, directed a short film titled Aningnaaq, which serves as a Gravity companion piece. At a certain point in the film, Bullock's character Dr. Ryan Stone is left alone and, while in a space station attempting to reach Mission Control, she ends up making contact with Aningnaaq (Orto Ignatiussen), an Inuit ice-fisher in Greenland. The two don't speak the same language, and all we really pick up on are the sounds of babies crying and dogs barking in the background, but Stone and Aningnaaq do end up communicating in a sense. It's one of the most touching moments in a film full of numerous triumphs.

The 7-minute film played at the Venice Film Festival, inexplicably in front of We're the Millers (!?!), and chances are those who saw it had no idea it was connected to Gravity.  While it won't be appearing on the big screen, we can expect the short to be a part of the Gravity DVD/Blu-Ray special features. Here's the official synopsis:

Aningaaq, an Inuit fisherman camping on the ice over a frozen fjord, talks through a two way radio with a dying astronaut who is stranded in space, 500 kilometers above earth. Even though he doesn’t speak English and she doesn’t speak Greenlandic, they manage to have a conversation about dogs, babies, life and death. [RopesofSilicon]

Blu-Ray and DVD Deals: Up to 70% off everything Joss Whedon

Amazon is showing Joss Whedon some serious love this week, and now sort of seems like the perfect time, doesn't it? His indie Much Ado About Nothing has received nothing short of fantastic reviews out of SXSW, so why not remind people of the many other projects featuring his unique voice?

The deal this week encompasses pretty much everything he did on the TV side of things. You can get the complete series of Firefly  on Blu-Ray for only $18.49, so there's absolutely no reason not to own it. You can get both seasons of Dollhouse on Blu-Ray for less than $35, which is half the cost of buying the complete set. The awesome Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie with Kristy Swanson is only $8.99 on Blu-Ray.  But the real steal may be getting the complete series of Buffy the Vampire Slayer for only $64.99, a whopping 68% off. The discount on Angel is just as good, 60% off for a low price of $55.99. If I didn't already own them I'd buy them all right now.

You can check out the full list of Whedon titles on sale here!

Win a copy of 'Pitch Perfect' on Blu-Ray/DVD!

In case you couldn't tell from my review or by how excited I was to learn about the sequel, Pitch Perfect is a personal favorite. We love this movie so much around here that we want to make sure you see it as well.

We're offering four of our readers a Blu-Ray/DVD copy of Pitch Perfect, with winners to be selected on December 24th.  To enter, you MUST be a fan of Punch Drunk Critics on Facebook, so if you haven't "Liked" us yet then please do so now. Since we consider Pitch Perfect to be one of this year's surprise films, to win you'll need to leave a comment here with the one movie that took you by surprise in 2012, and you can't say Pitch Perfect! Check out the 90-second trailer for 'The Dark Knight Rises' Blu-Ray!

Now that we've all got our copies of The Avengers sitting neatly on our shelves, is there any other Blu-Ray more anticipated than The Dark Knight Rises? Hell no there isn't, and Warner Bros. is taking advantage of it by releasing multiple versions in different packaging and each with their own unique special features. Kind of a cheap ploy to make you buy them all, but you know there will be more than a few who do.

A new 90-second trailer has been released to hype the December 4th release, and along with reliving some of the film's most thrilling moments, it also gives us a taste of the bonus material that all of the Blu-Rays will include. A history of the Batmobile is one of the features I'm most looking forward to, along with the featurette on the making of the film, titled Ending the Knight.

You can order The Dark Knight Rises on Blu-Ray/DVD combo right now for $24.99 by going here. Or if you're a real die hard like I am, then you're going to want the version with the collectible limited edition Bat Cowl, yours here for only $35.99. Check out the trailer below....

Watch the depressing alternate opening to 'Marvel's The Avengers'

That's Marvel's hand in your pocket right now, digging in there for another handful of your hard-earned cash. After scoring the biggest hit of the summer, and one of the biggest of all-time with The Avengers, Marvel is coming around for another pass when the film hits DVD/Blu-Ray next month. While we've already seen a glimpse of the numerous special bonus features the package will include, we're now getting a look at what could have been the opening sequence to the film. Thank goodness they didn't go with it.

In this version of Joss Whedon's film, we don't get any of quippy dialogue, magical energy, or Loki's prattling that we saw in theaters. Instead we get what is really a depressing, slow moving re-telling of events by Maria Hill(Cobie Smulders) after what she describes as the "Tesseract event". Other than showing us a little more of the defiant attitude towards Nick Fury that we'll hopefully see more of later, this is a pretty terrible scene and worthy of being thrown in the junk pile.

Check it out below, and be sure to pre-order your copy of The Avengers before it hits stores on September 26th....
