The Party gets Crashed in New 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' Image

Disney has an incredible slate of blockbuster films coming in 2015, and right at the center of it is Avengers: Age of Ultron. While showing off their lineup they've released a new image from the superhero film, and it's one that should be familiar to the millions of people who watched the trailer.

The photo shows the entire team's astonished faces as Ultron (James Spader) crashes a party at Tony Stark's swanky crib. They're about to get a verbal smackdown from the newly-sentient android about "strings" and such, just before launching an all-out assault. This'll teach Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) and Jim Rhodes (Don Cheadle) to hang out with the Avengers during off hours. It could get dangerous.

Directed by Joss Whedon and starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Paul Bettany, Samuel L. Jackson, and Elizabeth Olsen, Avengers: Age of Ultron opens May 1st 2015.

'Avengers: Age of Ultron' Extended Trailer Features New Footage

The trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron has been out there for awhile now, and still the Internet is buzzing over it. Part of the reason is excitement over Marvel's recent announcements of Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Civil War, and more that are expected to tie into the larger franchise.. The other reason is that it's just a damn good trailer with all of the superhero spectacle fans expect from Marvel, not to mention that haunting rendition of "I've Got No Strings". Well now there's even more reason to get pumped up with the release of an extended version of the trailer, which offers up some footage we haven't seen before, including a glimpse at Korean actress Claudia Kim as Tony Stark's colleague. Apparently she's important enough to make the big Avengers party at Stark's crib.

Avengers: Age of Ultron opens May 1st 2015.

Musings: What romantic-comedy mockery does “They Came Together” do best?

You can tell that director David Wain wants his new film, They Came Together, to be as iconic as his most famous work, Wet Hot American Summer. The intent soaks the film, manifesting in every crazy aside, every use of Christopher Meloni, and every bizarre sex scene. They Came Together is Wain’s attempt at recapturing the weird magic of Wet Hot American Summer, but it doesn’t quite work—you can’t strike ridiculous lightning twice. (Check out Travis's review here.)

Nevertheless, stars Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler—as Joel and Molly, respectively—give it their all, and for as much as the film feels like an overly long sketch jammed before the 1 a.m. cutoff on Saturday Night Live, there are moments here as memorable as Meloni and his can of vegetables. If you’re going to end up seeing or renting They Came Together this weekend, do it for these five moments.

+ “He’s handsome but in a nonthreatening way; vaguely but not overly Jewish.” “Molly is the kind of cute, klutzy girl that sometimes will drive you a little bit crazy, but you can’t help but fall in love with her.” One of the first things They Came Together does well is introduce the main characters played by Rudd and Poehler, and could they have been more spot-on in their generalizations of romantic-comedy protagonists? Absolutely not. Especially if you’ve ever seen Rudd play a romantic lead, like he did way back when in Baz Luhrmann’s “Romeo + Juliet” – Paris basically defined “handsome but in a nonthreatening way.”

+ Amy Poehler shaving her face. In an early sequence, a split-screen shows Rudd and Poehler getting ready for their days in a similar fashion—singing along to the same song in the shower, for example—and then Rudd shaving his face … while Poehler also shaves her face. It’s so stupid, but her cutesy, grinning face as she smears shaving cream all over it has stuck with me since.

+ Jason Mantzoukas’s beard. The thing should get its own IMDB credit. Whether he’s trying to tame it down as a candy-company executive or letting it look all crazy while he’s in costume as a vampire, it’s a thing of beauty. Bless this man’s commitment to growing, and keeping, insane facial hair. It’s almost as important to the film as Michael Ian Black’s greasy sideswept hair and orange tan—because if you’re a romantic-comedy villain, that’s just how you look. That’s just true.

+ “That’s the point of view I represent!” says Kenan Thompson, who plays the token married and token black friend to Rudd’s Joel. If only all movies were this upfront about their casting quotas.

+ That time Joel pulls a cheeseburger out from behind the ear of Molly’s-never-before-mentioned son, who immediately calls him “Daddy.” We’re so used to seeing romantic-comedy protagonists try to charm children onto their side, but at least Wain abandons the change route—who even uses coins anymore?—and goes straight for the grilled-meat option. I keep hoping someone will pull this move on me someday. I would love them for the rest of my life.

Review: David Wain's 'They Came Together' Starring Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler

Normally, when David Wain is at the peak of his comedic powers he's also at his most bizarre.  His seminal comedy hit Wet Hot American Summer is incredibly ridiculous, offbeat, and distinct in the way that many consider it a classic, while others will probably never get it. Most recently, Wain has been dabbling in more mainstream efforts such as Wanderlust and Role Models, but his latest film They Came Together is a poor attempt to reclaim his indie cred by tearing to shreds the most conventional genre of all: the romantic comedy.

That's right, the old rom-com, which everybody can admit is stale and painfully formulaic. That seems to be the entire point of Wain's film, which stars the bulk of his 'Wet Hot' cast, with Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler in the lead roles as a couple whose love follows a familiar step-by-step path. The problem is that Wain isn't especially clever in pointing out the silliness behind the infamous "meet cutes", contrived romantic obstacles, and phony emotional entanglements that litter romantic comedies. We're all in on the joke right from the beginning, and Wain struggles to make that one joke fly for more than 20 minutes, much less the 83 minute run time.

The whole set-up is basically ripped from You've Got Mail; perhaps the stick by which all formulaic rom-coms will forever be measured. Molly (Poehler) and Joel (Rudd) are at a restaurant on a double date with a bored married couple (Bill Hader and Ellie Kemper), when the dinner conversation turns to how they met and fell in love. All the standard genre tropes are rolled out in a fashion that is initially hilarious because we all recognize them: Molly is an awkward but lovable candy shop owner, so innocent and pure and she gives all of her profits to charity. Joel is nominally her perfect match, but he works for a huge corporation planning to open its own store right across the street and put Molly out of business. When the two meet, of course they are instant enemies despite the obvious physical attraction, but soon they overcome the tension with the help of their stereotypical ethnic best friends.

It's obvious that Wain and his talented cast are having a lot of fun with this, and the film is at its best when it ventures into ludicrous tangents that feel separate from the rom-com shaming. Wain favorite Christopher Meloni co-stars as Joel's money-grubbing boss, and his embarrassing toilet misadventures at a costume party are a highlight. Joel has his group of racially diverse buddies (including SNL vet Kenan Thompson and The State'sKen Marino) who all play basketball (badly) and act as Joel's voices of reason. While these scenes are funny and clever in their own way, you can almost hear the gears grind to a halt during a torturous, repetitive sequence between Joel and a bartender over the phrase "You can say that again". It's one of those scenes that starts off funny, becomes tiresome, but never goes back around to being funny again, and you know that's what Wain was hoping for. The film's weak double-entendre of a title should tell you there's nothing subversive going on here; every joke is pretty obvious.

Unfortunately, there are too many moments just like that one. There comes a point when Hader and Kemper's characters begin to grow weary of the overlong tale, and it's a pretty good reflection of how the audience will feel at that point. Satire is a tough beast to tame, and while some of Wain's jokes are obviously meant to be terrible, surely not so many were designed to fall as flat as they do. Rudd, who has been in more than his share of lame romantic comedies, plays along with the gags and pokes fun at himself most of all. He and Poehler make for a great pair, one that wouldn't be too surprising if they were in a straight-up rom-com at some point, but they just don't have enough material to work with. As a fan of The State and Wet Hot American Summer, They Came Together feels like Wain flailing desperately to reclaim that old magic but finding it simply isn't there.

Cobie Smulders, Guy Pearce, and More to Star in Andrew Bujalski's 'Results'

After its premier at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, people couldn't stop talking about Andrew Bujalski's peculiar little film, Computer Chess. The oddball movie, which sortof resembled a nerd biography done in the style of Wild Kingdom, played into Bujalski's "mumblecore" roots while showing he was capable of doing more. And now we're going to get a chance to see what "more" is in his next film.

Bujalski will have a chance to work with recognizable stars for once as Guy Pearce (via the New York Times) will be part of his next film, Results. Not only that, but according to ThePlaylist he'll be joined by Cobie Smulders, Anthony Michael Hall (!!!), Kevin Corrigan, Constance Zimmer (Entourage), Brooklyn Decker, and Giovanni Ribisi. As for the story, it follows "Kat and Trevor, personal trainers, and what happens when out-of-shape and newly wealthy Danny enters their lives."

Sounds pretty good, and it will be interesting to see what approach Bujalski takes with a little more attention on him.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Debrief: Episode 1.20, "Nothing Personal"

Only three episodes left before the first season of Agents of SHIELD is over and while most of the folks around are feeling better about the show I’m still in the same "this isn’t that good" camp. With last night’s episode titled 'Nothing’s Personal' really not changing my feelings either. I think after the first spoilery episode 4 days after the release of Cap 2 the show kind of settled back into its kind of average state of being again with every one being just a bit too cute. This episode continues directly where the last one left us with team back at the base, May out in the cold, and Skye in a terrible scary boyfriend movie plot with Ward.

The episode starts with us seeing Maria Hill (now a Stark employee sorry for more Cap 2 spoilers) in Washington dealing with Congressional hearings about what happened with HYDRA and SHIELD. She's snuck up on by Agent May who’s still on the hunt for who was in charge of T.A.H.I.T.I. with Hill not having much for her she dips away as Hill is taken into custody by FBI. Back at the hidden base bunker left over team Coulson is checking and sees from tapes that everyone left. Simmons ends up finding Koenig’s body with Fitz finding a message from Skye warning that Ward is HYDRA. After everyone gets over their shock at the betrayal they start to get angry and make a plan, only to have the base entered by Talbot (aka the #2 Hulk hater in existence) and his troops. Wondering how they got in Coulson finds out that Maria Hill snitched.

As Talbot starts questioning Fitz, Simmons and Triplett, Coulson is talking to Hill about what’s going on. Hill cut a deal to not go to jail and tells Coulson to get in on it. He’s like "naw", Ward is HYDRA, they done murdered Hand and broke out the fridge, took all the good stuff and he has to take out Garrett. Once Hill hears that she becomes extra gully again and with Coulson beats up Talbot and his troops and escapes to hunt down Ward and get Skye back.

So meanwhile the lovers Skye and Ward are in L.A. She tells him that the place to decrypt the drive is the diner where she first met Mike Peterson aka Deathlok. So she’s running the immaculate game on Ward feigning ignorance over the sudden arrival of cops, and just waiting for the moment to tell Ward she knows he’s HYDRA and that she brought the cops to the spot. He flips out and starts beating up cops and somehow doesn’t get shot by the LAPD while Skye gets kind of arrested and then as the cops are taken out drives the squad car away until the dude Deathlok jumps on the car punches through the windshield and grabs her up by the throat. Now with the supreme muscle that is Deathlok they all go back to the Bus with Skye really getting into Ward and hurting his feelings. An annoyed Deathlok who has no time or gives no damn anymore about these people tells Skye to give up the info or as he shoots Ward with a weird chest device that stops Ward’s heart. Skye has to give up the info or Ward dies. So because she is a good person she tells him and Ward doesn’t die. She tells them that the position to decrypt the data is high in the sky so as they try to take off the plane is stopped by Hill and Team Coulson.

It’s really just a stalling tactic so that Coulson can sneak aboard the plane. Ward takes off with Coulson now on the plane. He reaches Skye and Skye all happy to be saved asked him how he took out Deathlok. A shook looking Coulson is like Deathlok is here? Now Deathlok sees Coulson and begin pursuit. Coulson and Skye run to Lola (the flying car) open the Bus’ loading door and escape the clutches of Ward and Deathlok using Lola to not die. Ward being Ward is all salty and thirsty can’t let them escape and plans to pursue with Deathlok telling him to chill since they have the drive and the info but of course no one listens to him. The team now at a lowly motel 6 looking place is just now taking a rest and dealing with Ward’s betrayal. Skye tells Coulson in another one of their father-daughter like heart to hearts that she left a trap in the hard drive. So with things bad but not too terrible Coulson goes to his motel room to find Agent May standing there in the dark.

See during the episode she decided to go to Coulson’s “grave” and dig up the casket. There she found a flash drive with some video on it. She then brings it to Coulson and gets him to sit down and watch it since it will give him the answer to who ran the T.A.H.I.T.I. project. Guess what trill believers it was Coulson. Coulson was put in charge of project that was designed to bring an Avenger back to life if they just so happened to have died in battle. But what they learned is that the side effects were just too great unless you wipe a person’s mind so that they do not remember anything of the process. The video is Coulson explaining this to Fury and resigning all to which Coulson just says “huh”.

So that’s it. A little more mystery and more douche bag Ward ahead with hopefully more I don’t really care but I have to do this Deathlok in the next two weeks. Oh and Maria Hill named dropped the Man-Thing this past week. That was nice.

Comic-Con: First 'Agents of SHIELD' Cameo; J. August Richards' Role Revealed

The Agents of SHIELD panel has just wrapped up showing the pilot episode of the anticipated Marvel series, and the response to it already has people here at Comic-Con buzzing. Along with the enthusiastic response, there came a couple of surprising tidbits of info, including the very first cameo.

We've all expected that there would be cameos from other Marvel characters and some crossover between them, and the first will be none other than SHIELD agent Maria Hill, played by Cobie Smulders. In fact, she appears in the very first episode alongside the resurrected Agent Coulson, played by Clark Gregg.

The other big secret has revolved around the mystery character played by J. August Richards. He was seen in the promos with some form of obvious imperviousness and super-strength, which had many suspecting he was Luke Cage. Turns out that's not the case, as he will actually play Mike Peterson, a character in the Marvel Universe comics who has no powers at all. He's the best friend of a mostly unknown hero known as Slapstick, a member of the New Warriors. Other than being smart enough to figure out his best friend was a superhero, Mike has no abilities, which means the character is going to be significantly different on the show. It wouldn't be a total surprise if this were a way to introduce the New Warriors into the Marvel cinemative/TV universe. Richards was also rumored to be playing the character Rage, who was one of Slapstick's best friends in the New Warriors. [EW]

Frank Grillo confirmed as Crossbones; Cobie Smulders to appear as Maria Hill in 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier'

Barely a week since the story first emerged that Frank Grillo was testing for the role of villain Crossbones in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Variety reports he has now been confirmed. Crossbones is a pretty important character to the story The Russo Brothers appear to be telling, which involves Cap's sidekick Bucky(Sebastian Stan) all grown up and programmed to kill. Crossbones is a henchman of the Red Skull, who was played by Hugo Weaving and will likely be forced back because he's contractually obligated to. Weaving has been pretty vocal about not wanting to return.

Also, Cobie Smulders will reprise her role of S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill, and with Samuel L. Jackson confirmed to appear as Nick Fury, I'm hoping we'll get to see a little bit more dissension in the ranks of the world's foremost espionage unit. I think Marvel's long term goal is to do some sort of mini-Civil War, with government sanctioned heroes(possibly War Machine??) brought in to take down The Avengers. All speculation on my part, but it seems like a logical move.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier stars Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie, Scarlett Johansson, and opens on April 4th 2014.

Watch the depressing alternate opening to 'Marvel's The Avengers'

That's Marvel's hand in your pocket right now, digging in there for another handful of your hard-earned cash. After scoring the biggest hit of the summer, and one of the biggest of all-time with The Avengers, Marvel is coming around for another pass when the film hits DVD/Blu-Ray next month. While we've already seen a glimpse of the numerous special bonus features the package will include, we're now getting a look at what could have been the opening sequence to the film. Thank goodness they didn't go with it.

In this version of Joss Whedon's film, we don't get any of quippy dialogue, magical energy, or Loki's prattling that we saw in theaters. Instead we get what is really a depressing, slow moving re-telling of events by Maria Hill(Cobie Smulders) after what she describes as the "Tesseract event". Other than showing us a little more of the defiant attitude towards Nick Fury that we'll hopefully see more of later, this is a pretty terrible scene and worthy of being thrown in the junk pile.

Check it out below, and be sure to pre-order your copy of The Avengers before it hits stores on September 26th....

Maria Hill and Nick Fury get heated in new clip from 'The Avengers'

I know everybody loves them some Scarlett Johansson, but it's Cobie Smulders who does it for me. Her role as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill is one of the main reasons to get excited about The Avengers, and I'm convinced she'll be a bigger factor in later movies.  Last night she was a guest on David Letterman's show to talk about the superhero flick,  where she of course said it was really good. She also introduced a new clip which shows the cracks forming in Hill's working relationship with Nick Fury(Samuel L. Jackson) already forming....

Serious stuff, indeed. Marvel's The Avengers(that's the official title although nobody will call it that) is set to open on May 4th! Do you really need a run down of the cast? Didn't think so.

A surprise Marvel character returns in the Japanese trailer for 'The Avengers'!

Why is it every other country gets the best versions of our biggest movies? In the case of The Avengers that's been especially true, and this latest Japanese one is no different. Not only do we get tons of new footage, including a better look at Loki's army of alien warriors, but a character who was assumed to not be in the film at all makes a surprise cameo. Keep your eyes peeled during the beginning moments. Otherwise it's more of superheroes squabbling and looking unbelievably cool while doing it.

One thing worth noting is the increased presence of Cobie Smulders as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill in this trailer, indicating she may be more of factor in the film than expected. Hill is too important of a character to simply stand in the background looking pretty.

The Joss Whedon written and directed film opens on May 4th....

Two new photos of Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill in 'The Avengers'!

The presence of Maria Hill in The Avengers has always struck me as an odd move. In the world of Marvel Comics she's a relatively new character, albeit an important one, who took on the leadership of S.H.I.E.L.D. after Nick Fury was basically branded a traitor, and then she took on Captain America himself when he stood against government orders. Let's just say she's not a character to be taken lightly, and while her role in Joss Whedon's film may be small right now, there's a pretty good chance it'll get bigger when the inevitable sequels arrive.

Marvel has released a couple of new images of the super hot Cobie Smulders(How I Met Your Mother) as Maria Hill. Nothing major here, but it's nice to get a little something different than the usual shots of Iron Man or Thor.  The Avengers will finally assemble into theaters on May 4th!

Three new images from The Avengers; trailer debuts next week

Told you it was just the tip of the iceberg. If you got sick of all the promo images, the clips, the Captain America Slurpee™ cups, and all the other crap Marvel buried us in over the summer, then The Avengers is going to be a slice of Hell on earth. Sorry, it's just a fact. Now that that marketing blitz has begun waaaaay ahead of the film's May 4th 2012 release, it's not going to stop or even hit the breaks.

Three more images have been released, and while they aren't anything special, the set photo does give us our first look at Cobie Smulders as SHIELD agent Maria Hill. She's so much hotter than Scarlett Johansson it's not even a close race. Check those out below, and keep an eye out for the trailer, which should hit the internet on Tuesday...

The Avengers press release confirms Loki will be in the film; 1st set photo revealed

Joss Whedon's The Avengers just started shooting yesterday, with the plan for the big superhero romp to hit theaters on May 4th, 2012. While we pretty much know most of the cast that will be involved, one character we've been less certain of is Loki, the trickster god and brother to Thor. Tom Hiddleston, who plays Loki, has been teasing lately that he won't be in The Avengers at all, but there have been conflicting stories on that one. Marvel Studios has just issued a press release which not only confirms that Hiddleston will be in the film, but also confirms the presence of Stellan Skarsgard as Professor Erik Selvig. Marvel also included the first set image, which while not really showing anything in particular, is still sorta cool.  You can check out that shot above, with the press release below.

As for plot details, it's still pretty thin. Basically an "unexpected enemy" emerges that threatens the world and forces the heroes to unite. That could be anything from the Skrulls to the Hulk himself.

Production has commenced today in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated movie “Marvel’s The Avengers,” directed by Joss Whedon (“Serenity”) from a screenplay by Whedon. The film will continue principal photography in Cleveland, Ohio and New York City. Robert Downey, Jr. (“Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2″) returns as the iconic Tony Stark/Iron Man along with Chris Hemsworth (“Thor”) as Thor, Chris Evans (“Captain America: The First Avenger”) as Captain America, Jeremy Renner (“Thor,” “The Hurt Locker”) as Hawkeye, Mark Ruffalo (“The Kids Are Alright”) as Hulk, Scarlett Johansson (“Iron Man 2″) as Black Widow, Clark Gregg (“Iron Man,” “Thor”) as Agent Phil Coulson, and Samuel L. Jackson (“Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2″) as Nick Fury. Set for release in the US on May 4, 2012, “Marvel’s The Avengers” is the first feature to be fully owned, marketed and distributed by Disney, which acquired Marvel in 2009.

Continuing the epic big-screen adventures started in “Iron Man,” “The Incredible Hulk,” “Iron Man 2,” “Thor,” and “Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Marvel’s The Avengers” is the super hero team up of a lifetime. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster.

Based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1963, “Marvel’s The Avengers” brings together the mightiest super hero characters as they all assemble together on screen for the first time. The star studded cast of super heroes will be joined by Cobie Smulders (“How I Met Your Mother) as Agent Maria Hill of S.H.I.E.L.D., as well as Tom Hiddleston (“Wallander”) and Stellan SkarsgĂ„rd (“Angels & Demons,” “Mamma Mia!”) who will both reprise their respective roles as Loki and Professor Erik Selvig from the upcoming Marvel Studios’ feature “Thor.”

“Marvel’s The Avengers” is being produced by Marvel Studios’ President, Kevin Feige, and executive produced by Alan Fine, Stan Lee, Louis D’Esposito, Patty Whitcher, and Jon Favreau. Marvel Studios’ Jeremy Latcham and Victoria Alonso will co-produce.

The creative production team also includes Oscar nominated director of photography Seamus McGarvey (“Atonement”), production designer James Chinlund (“25th Hour”), Oscar winning costume designer Alexandra Byrne (“Elizabeth: The Golden Age”), Oscar winning visual effects supervisor Janek Sirrs (“Iron Man 2,” “The Matrix”), visual effects producer Susan Pickett (“Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2?), stunt coordinator R.A. Rondell (“Superman Returns”), and four-time Oscar nominated special effects supervisor Dan Sudick (“Iron Man,” “War of the Worlds”). The editors include Oscar nominated Paul Rubell (“Collateral”) and Jeffrey Ford (“Crazy Heart”).

Marvel Studios most recently produced “Iron Man 2″ which was released in theatres on May 7, 2010. The sequel to “Iron Man,” starring Robert Downey, Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow as well as Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson and Mickey Rourke, took the number one spot its first weekend with a domestic box office gross of $128.1 million. To date the film has earned over $620 million in worldwide box office receipts.

In the summer of 2008, Marvel produced the summer blockbuster movies, “Iron Man” and “The Incredible Hulk.” “Iron Man,” in which Robert Downey, Jr. originally dons the super hero’s powerful armor alongside co-stars Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow, was released May 2, 2008 and was an immediate box office success. Garnering the number one position for two weeks in a row, the film brought in over $100 million its opening weekend and grossed over $571 million worldwide. On June 13, 2008, Marvel released “The Incredible Hulk” marking its second number one opener of that summer. The spectacular revival of the iconic green goliath grossed over $250 million in worldwide box office receipts.

Cobie Smulders to play Maria Hill in The Avengers

When Samuel L. Jackson was spilling his guts about The Avengers to Jimmy Fallon the other day, the most interesting thing he mentioned was that he was screen testing some ladies to play his assistant in the film.  My immediate reaction was that this character could be Sharon Carter, formerly Agent 13 in SHIELD and future love interest of Captain America. The real question though, was who would take on the role?

Then we heard exactly who was reading for the part, and some interesting names popped up like Mary Elizabeth Winstead(Death Proof), Morena Baccarin(V), and Cobie Smulders(How I Met Your Mother). Winstead was soon ruled out, and Baccarin was assumed the frontrunner due to her close association with Joss Whedon. The two worked together on the short-lived TV show, Firefly, and then again on the spin off movie, Serenity.  Turns out those past ties didn't amount to much, because now Deadline is reporting that Smulders looks to be the pick, and she won't be playing Sharon Carter. Instead she'll be Maria Hill, Nick Fury confidant and one-time leader of SHIELD.

Hill is actually a fairly recent character in the Marvel Universe, having only debuted back in 2005 during the Secret War storyline which saw Nick Fury go into hiding. She took over as head of SHIELD during that time, leading them through the superhero Civil War and a massive Skrull invasion before losing her job to Norman Osborne. Yes, THAT Norman Osborne. She is currently the leader of one team of Avengers.

Smulders is an actress I've dug for a long time, and I think she's more than capable of making a good Maria Hill. When Joss Whedon was trying to string together a Wonder Woman flick, Smulders was on his list and she would've been great for that, too. She's got some pretty hot Maxim spreads, also. Just sayin'.

It remains to be seen what kind of role Maria Hill really takes on, because it's not likely she'll be leading SHIELD, but more likely she'll be a recognizable, semi-important face who might get a couple of moments to shine. Since SHIELD is involved in nearly every Marvel movie, if her character gets a good reaction it's possible her role could expand.
