DVD Review: 'Sweetwater' Starring January Jones

January Got a Gun. Or at least that would be a more interesting title for the moribund Western, Sweetwater, which somehow manages to screw up having Mad Men's sexy star January Jones as a gun-toting harbinger of vengeance. But then again writing/directing duo Noah and Logan Miller show utter incompetence merely getting the look and feel of the Old West right, and their haphazard attempts to add a touch of comic madness leave this version of the tumbleweed era totally flavorless.

Jones' ice queen demeanor may work on AMC's hit show but they make for a dull and lifeless heroine. In a grim and ugly New Mexico border town, she plays Sarah, a steely ex-prostitute now hooked up with Miguel (Eduardo Noriega), a wimpy landowner who absolutely doesn't wear the pants in that relationship. When he runs afoul of maniacal and murderous Mormon priest (Jason Isaacs) and winds up taking a dirt nap, Sarah is left alone to fend for herself, which she's more than capable of doing.

Literally dancing to the beat of his own drum is Ed Harris as Sheriff Jackson, who makes his comical entrances twirling like a ballerina before kicking the old lawman in the ass. It's a far cry from the more traditional gunslinger roles we've seen Harris play in the past, and perhaps is inspired in some small way by the off-kilter anti-genre flick Walker he starred in years ago. As the Sheriff and Josiah trade religious verse (and acts of violence) on their way to an inevitable showdown, Harris and Isaacs go waaaay over the edge in their performances to spruce up fairly generic roles. It may suit the off-beat tone of the film somewhat, but all of that is negated by how stiff and disinterested Jones seems to be. Her character suffers the most of them all; she's a town pariah, her husband's been killed, she becomes pregnant, gets raped, and much more happens to her along the way. But do we see any of that reflected in Jones' face or demeanor? She misplays nearly every emotional beat; even her quest for violent retribution is strangely dispassionate. Jones does get one terrific scene, though, using an umbrella to penetrate a would-be "peeping tom".

The west has never been less gritty, less pulpy than it is here, with the locale fading into the background when it should be a character in its own right. A more skillful hand could add a touch of stylized flair to the violence, and perhaps ratchet up the deadly slow pace which makes Sweetwater's 90 minute runtime feel like an epic wagon train.

Sweetwater hits DVD/Blu-Ray on Tuesday, December 31st.

New Posters for 'Oldboy', 'Sweetwater', and 'Ender's Game'

Josh Brolin brings the hammer down in the latest poster for Spike Lee's Oldboy. Opening on November 27th, the film is a remake of Park Chan-Wook's surreal and hyper-violent classic about a man imprisoned in a hotel for twenty years, only to be released and set on a course for revenge. It's just the first of Chan-Wook's revered "Vengeance Trilogy" getting a fresh coat of paint as remakes of Lady Vengeance and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance are in the works.

Scathing reviews and a poorly-received trailer haven't stopped the January Jones-led western Sweetwater from finally gaining distribution. Saddling into town on October 11th, Jones play a widow in 1886 New Mexico packin' heat as she seeks revenge for the murder of her husband by a rancher. Jones has a solid cast of Ed Harris, Jason Isaacs, and Stephen Root working alongside her, but the response out of Sundance was pretty brutal. Honestly I'm a little bit intrigued, though, if only because it will be a nice change of pace to see a twist on the usual western formula.

They've been phoning it in on most of these Ender's Game one-sheets, producing fairly generic Photoshopped images and tweaking them for different regions. Here's the latest boring poster for the adaptation of Orson Scott Card's sci-fi classic, which seemed to have a great deal of hype a few months ago. Now it seems to be getting lumped in with all of the failed YA films, and perhaps that was inevitable considering the cast and premise. Asa Butterfield is Ender Wiggin, a young boy recruited into Battle School where he and others his age are trained to become humanity's greatest military leaders in order to fight off an alien threat. Starring Hailee Steinfeld, Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, Viola Davis, Moises Arias, and Abigail Breslin, Ender's Game opens November 1st.

First Trailer for Western 'Sweetwater' Starring January Jones

So we've just seen two trailers for under-the-radar Sundance films The Lifeguard and Austenland, and even though those movies don't have much in the way of buzz around them, they're The Avengers compared to Sweetwater. Directed by Logan Miller and starring Betty Draper...er, January Jones, the film received some of the harshest reviews at the festival and then completely vanished, with no U.S. distribution date in place even as the first trailer arrives before it hits some international markets.

The blood flies fast and often in the otherwise generic trailer, which has Jones as a pioneer woman in 1886 New Mexico seeking revenge against a religious zealot (Jason Isaacs) for the murder of her husband. Ed Harris grits his teeth and revisits his Appaloosa days as an ornery lawman, and Jones gets a chance to revisit the genre for the first time since The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. Other than having a woman in the typically male role of the vengeance-seeker, there's little about this that looks good at all.

Chances are Sweetwater, which may go by the title of Sweet Vengeance, will end up going straight-to-DVD at some point. Check out the trailer below...
