Will Smith runs the Con Game in New Trailer for 'Focus'

Before Will Smith dives into his first comic book film with Suicide Squad, he'll try to reclaim the box office crown he lost some years ago. It's been a long time since the former Fresh Prince had a role that showed the charming qualities which made him a star to begin with, but with the conman romance Focus he looks to be back in top form.

Joined by Margot Robbie, who will also have a role in Suicide Squad, the film centers on a seasoned con man who becomes romantically involved with a hot young upstart. But their romantic past comes back to haunt him three years later when she resurfaces during a major con. The latest trailer plays up the sexiness plus the many twists and turns, and it will be interesting to see how Smith fares in a genre he's never really dealt with before.

Written and directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, Focus opens February 27th. Check out the new trailer below.

Will Smith and Margot Robbie get in 'Focus' in New Posters

Will Smith and The Wolf of Wall Street's Margot Robbie feature on two new posters for con man flick, Focus, directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. The film opens February 27 2015, and look for a new trailer to debut tomorrow.

SYNOPSIS: Will Smith stars as Nicky, a seasoned master of misdirection who becomes romantically involved with novice con artist Jess (Margot Robbie).  As he’s teaching her the tricks of the trade, she gets too close for comfort and he abruptly breaks it off.  Three years later, the former flame—now an accomplished femme fatale—shows up in Buenos Aires in the middle of the high stakes racecar circuit.  In the midst of Nicky’s latest, very dangerous scheme, she throws his plans for a loop…and the consummate con man off his game.

Review: 'Annie' starring Quvenzhane Wallis, Jamie Foxx, and Cameron Diaz

Only the hard-knock-hearted can walk out of Annie without a smile on their face and a song in their head. Let's be honest; the original Annie musical about the perky and feisty red-headed orphan has long since worn out its welcome; reduced to clichés popping up in more contemporary musicals. So why not a proper remake; one given a blast of hip-hop energy by Jay-Z and Will Smith, with adorable Beasts of the Southern Wild breakout Quvenzhane Wallis reinventing the title role?

Annie has never been especially subtle; the original musical is schmaltzy beyond normal human tolerance. So why in the world would anyone think this one would be different? Of course it isn't. The differences are in the atmosphere, the contemporary setting, and the clever dance choreography. Wallis isn't a natural singer, that much is true, but she's as plucky and likable as ever so that we can't help but love her. The story should be a familiar one, although it begins by brushing past expectations off its shoulders.

This Annie demands to be called a "foster kid" rather than an "orphan", she ducks and weaves through the busy Harlem streets in hopes of locating the parents who abandoned her as a baby. The group home she lives in with other girls is run by the nasty and perpetually angry Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz), a former singer whose head is stuck in the 1990s. Hope you like C&C Music Factory because you'll hear it a lot when she's around. After a rousing rendition of " A Hard Knock Life", a chance encounter with stiff mayoral candidate and cell phone mogul Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx) finds Annie under his care. It begins as a campaign tool but naturally grows into something more. Meanwhile, Hannigan is looking for a way to use the situation to get some of Stacks' money and be rid of Annie permanently.

Director Will Gluck (who gave us Emma Stone in Easy A) along with writers Aline Brosh McKenna and Emma Thompson, build their urban reimagining with a plethora of subplots that don't all payoff. Rose Byrne probably isn't the first we'd look to for song and dance numbers but she's a lot of fun as Stacks' lonely assistant and potential love interest. It should come as no surprise the best songs are performed by Foxx (remember his R&B career? Does it still exist?), while Wallis gets by purely on emotion. Her rendition of "Opportunity", one of a few new songs penned for the film, is touching enough to bring the entire crowd to tears.  The script is sharper than it has any need to be; paying homage without falling too deep into the nostalgia well. Plus there are a handful of hilarious cameos including a mock Twilight-esque parody with a couple of huge stars. While the Depression-era angst of the original is gone it's replaced by attitude and heart.

Clocking in at around two hours the film eventually loses steam as the expected lessons are learned and feelings laid bare in broad strokes. But you'll leave Annie happier than when you arrived and filled with the promise tomorrow can bring. Tomorrow, it's only a day away.

 Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Will Smith, Tom Hardy, and More Confirmed for 'Suicide Squad'; Oprah Winfrey (!!!) Sought for Role

Marvel may have done a great job of creating new stars (how many of you REALLY cared about Chris Evans before Captain America?), but Warner Bros. is hoping to go the more established route. Suicide Squad doesn't have the same name recognition as DC's top brands like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, so we've seen them shoot for the moon in casting, and now it all appears to have paid off.

Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney, Margot Robbie, and Cara Delevingne are officially set to star in the villain film, which David Ayer (Fury) will direct. For Hardy this will be a return to the DC Universe after playing Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, only this time he'll be taking on the role of Rick Flagg. Smith is set to play Deadshot, Leto is confirmed as the Joker with Robbie as his gal Harley Quinn, while Delevingne is the Enchantress and Courtney is Boomerang. Pretty cool lineup, and it gives Smith a chance to play an actual comic book character after starring as a washed-up superhero in Hancock.

There's more, though, as Variety adds that Viola Davis, her The Help and Get On Up co-star Octavia Spencer, and Oprah Winfrey (!!!!!!) sought to take on the role of Amanda Waller. Waller, aka "The Wall" is the tough-as-nails head of the government organization that uses supervillains as expendable assets on suicide missions. Angela Bassett portrayed her in the Green Lantern film, but who cares about that when Oprah!?!? As you might have guessed, Oprah is the studio's top pick.

Suicide Squad is set to open on August 5th 2016.  Let the fan art begin.

The Sun Comes Out in the Final 'Annie' Trailers starring Quvenzhane Wallis and Jamie Foxx

What's the point in remaking a movie like Annie? Because it will probably make a ton of money this holiday season, that's why, especially with the might of Will Smith and Jay-Z backing it, along with the lovable Quvenzhane Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) as the titular spirited orphan. With so much attention focused on the Oscar-contending dramas, a film like Annie will be a welcome diversion for families looking for a night out, even if it looks rather uninspiring to the rest of us.

Directed by Will Gluck (Easy A) and co-starring Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, Rose Byrne, and Bobby Cannvale, this contemporary remake of the Broadway musical follows its spunky heroine as she deals with a mean foster mom and warms the heart of hard-nosed mayoral candidate Will Stacks. The sun-will-come-out soundtrack and flashy dance numbers may be the hottest thing about this film which is clearly aiming at the kiddies.

Annie opens on December 19th.

So Much for that 'Uptown Saturday Night' Remake with Will Smith and Denzel Washington

Lost in Adam McKay's numerous projects, from Anchorman 2 to doing rewrites on Ant-Man, is that he was supposed to have begun work on a remake of the 1974 Sidney Poitier/Bill Cosby crime comedy, Uptown Saturday Night. It even had a powerhouse duo guaranteed to earn some serious $$$ at the box office, with Denzel Washington and Will Smith (!!!!) set to star with a screenplay from Neighbors writer, Nicholas Stoller. But nothing has come of it, and McKay recently revealed to Collider that the promising film has been canned by Warner Bros.

McKay: “In the case of Uptown Saturday Night, that actually isn’t happening. I did a script with Nicholas Stoller and they didn’t quite respond to it. I mean who knows, if they come back with a great script from other writers I could reattach, but for now that doesn’t look like that’s going. So I was happy that I found these other projects because that was one I thought I was doing and it just didn’t quite get there.”

I'm of two minds on this because Uptown Saturday Night, which follows two friends' crazed attempts to retrieve a stolen winning lotto ticket, is a personal favorite that doesn't need to be messed with. But the thought of seeing Denzel and Smith together is something that may never came around again. McKay's next project will instead be his economic crisis drama, The Big Short.

Ryan Gosling Eyed for 'Doctor Strange' and DC's 'Suicide Squad' Along with Will Smith and Tom Hardy

So far in his career Ryan Gosling has yet to star in a major tentpole film. When he had the chance to star in a potential blockbuster in the Logan's Run remake he backed out, but when it comes to superhero movies he's totally avoided them. That may be about to change, though, as THR says Gosling has been spending some time at the Marvel offices to talk about Doctor Strange, while he's also being courted for roles in Warner Bros.' Suicide Squad and Summit's film on Harry Houdini.

With Joaquin Phoenix having pulled his name out of the running, Marvel has expanded their Doctor Strange search to a series of other A-listers. Ewan McGregor, Matthew McConaughey, and Oscar Isaac are just a few of the names that have emerged recently, and apparently they've met with Gosling about the role, too. Reports are Marvel feels they can get just about anybody for the role which is why they've been approaching actors who, like Phoenix, have mostly stayed away from franchises and long-term contracts. Gosling seems like a long shot for this one, but you never know.

Gosling is also Warner Bros.' pick to lead their newly-confirmed and dated Suicide Squad film, which will be directed by David Ayer for release in 2016. They're aiming pretty high for this one by sending out offers to Will Smith, his Focus co-star Margot Robbie, and Tom Hardy for the antihero film about a team of villains forced to work as expendable black ops agents for the government. Given the recent rumors about the Suicide Squad lineup it's likely they want Gosling for the role of Deadshot or Captain Boomerang and Robbie as Vixen. As for Smith or Hardy? Your guess is as good as mine.

There's also an offer out there for Gosling to star in the forever-developing adaptation of The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero, which Dean Parisot is directing. Johnny Depp had been attached to it briefly but will be busy cranking out a fifth Pirates of the Caribbean. Right now it doesn't seem likely Gosling will take any of these projects. Let's not forget he was close to starring in Green Lantern but made the wise decision to turn it down. He may be looking at that as a sign to steer clear from the genre altogether.

Will Smith and Margot Robbie Con One Another in First Trailer for 'Focus'

As noted yesterday when the first images of the crime comedy Focus were released, Will Smith has been keeping a distance from the kinds of charming roles that made him popular to begin with. As easy as it may be to knock a film like Hitch now, it was a big hit and audiences loved him in it. It was also the rare film by Smith that wasn't part of some mega franchise. Well the Smith audiences have been craving seems to be back in the first trailer for Focus.

Directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, the duo behind Crazy Stupid Love, Focus stars Smith and The Wolf of Wall Street's Margot Robbie as con artists looking for a big score. The problem is they fell in love years earlier when he took the newcomer under his tutelage, and now that past romantic entanglement is causing all kinds of problems. This one has been in the works for awhile and it could have looked very different if the original casts had stuck around. Initially it was set to reteam Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, followed by Ben Affleck and Kristen Stewart which would have been incredibly weird. This film reminds me of Ed Burns' 2003 film, Confidence, which is a very good thing.

Focus opens February 27th 2015.

First Look at Will Smith and Margot Robbie in Crime Caper 'Focus'

It's been a long time since we've seen Will Smith putting his considerable charm to good use. Lately he's played a sewer-dwelling Satan in Winter's Tale and a gruff military commander in After Earth. Not surprisingly, neither film did very well. Audiences have been eager for a chance to see Smith's smooth personality on display again, and they'll get just that when the crime comedy Focus opens next year.

The trailer for Focus has been playing in theaters for a couple of weeks but has yet to come online. That should be changing soon enough, but for now USA Today has released the first images. Smith stars alongside The Wolf of Wall Street's Margot Robbie in a caper film about an experienced con man who takes a sexy young upstart under his wing, only for romantic entanglements get in the way of a huge score.

Crazy Stupid Love duo of John Requa and Glenn Ficarra directed the film, and they talked about finding that same chemistry in Smith and Robbie that they had with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.

Requa:  "Will said, 'You're going to have trouble finding a girl because I kind of have a large personality.' And he was right. But Margot walked in and just put everybody on their heels. When she walked out of the room, Will turned to us and said, 'Mmhm.'"

Ficarra:  "It was the same moment we had with Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling when they first read together. Here's Ryan Gosling, this very desirable male 'hubba hubba' dude. And Emma just came in and owned him. She didn't pause for a minute. She just proceeded to insult him."

Focus is set to open next year on February 27th.

'I Am Legend' to go the Reboot Route

In case it hasn't been made obvious by his general lack of output over the last few years, Will Smith is very choosy which projects he takes part in. This is the same guy who shot down a return for Independence Day 2, a sequel to the film that basically made his entire career. That we got three Men in Black movies out of him is a pretty big deal, but there's another potential franchise he's been holding up for awhile. That would be a sequel to 2007's sci-fi flick, I Am Legend, which Warner Bros. has been trying to move on since and got no support from Smith. Well now they've decided to just write the actor off and push ahead with a complete reboot.

According to Deadline, the studio has bought Gary Graham's screenplay 'A Garden at the End of the World', which they will refashion into an I Am Legend reboot. Described as The Searchers with a sci-fi angle, Warner Bros. sees enough similarities to I Am Legend to go this route. Graham had been working at an Apple store before taking a risk and posting his script to the Black List, where it caught the attention of Hollywood and got him repped by agents.

This is just the latest attempt by the studio to do something...anything, with I Am Legend since it made nearly $600M seven years ago. Most recently they hired Arash Amel to begin work on a prequel in hopes Smith could be lured back, but obviously that didn't happen and definitely won't now.

Will Smith to Star in Ridley Scott-Produced Concussion Drama

The NFL probably can't wait for the next season to begin because it serves as a distraction from the deeper issues they face. One of those problems that has become a topic of discussion again is concussions, and the devastating impact they have on a player's long-term health. Dan Marino and a number of other players filed a class-action suit against the league for not doing everything possible to prevent concussions from happening. And while Marino has dropped out of that suit, the issue still lingers and now Hollywood is going to put it in the spotlight.

Will Smith is set to star in an adaptation of Jeanne Marie Laskas GQ article, Brain Game, about whistleblowing neuropathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu "who single-handedly made the first discovery of CTE in a professional football player and brought awareness to the public". Smith will play Omalu in what is being described as similar to The Insider, the acclaimed whistleblower drama that earned seven Oscar nominations. Comparisons like that are probably a reason why Smith dropped out of Brilliance for this project.

This is the same project Ridley Scott was attached to direct last year, but he will simply produce with Peter Landesman (Parkland) writing the script and taking the helm. The NFL might want to start getting their PR people ready because this only one of a number of concussion films on the way. Isaiah Washington will be starring in Game Time Decision (formerly The Last Fall), that is expected to beat out Scott's film and also deals with a football player dealing with concussion symptoms. Will Smith Exits Sci-Fi Film 'Brilliance'

With filming set to begin this summer on Julius Onah and David Koepp's adaptation of Brilliance, the Marcus Sakey novel full of super powers and government agents, everything seemed to be coming together nicely. Will Smith was eying the lead role and earlier this month Noomi Rapace was in talks to join him. But now production has been derailed as Smith has departed the film due to scheduling issues.

The start date on the film had been bumped a couple of times, and the delays were enough to cause a conflict with Focus, the con-man film Smith will star in opposite Margot Robbie. Brilliance takes place in a world where a small number of people known as "brilliants" are born with incredible powers. Smith would have played federal agent Nick Cooper, a brilliant who uses his power to hunt down terrorists and fellow brilliants.

No word if production is still targeting the August start date, but Legendary Pictures is probably scrambling to find Smith's replacement. He may not be the sure box office draw he used to be, but Smith is still one of the biggest names in Hollywood and played a big part in moving the film forward. [Deadline]

First Teaser Poster for 'Annie'; Trailer Debuts Tonight

The first poster and synopsis have been released for the long-developing Annie remake, starring Quvenzhane Wallis, Jamie Foxx, and Cameron Diaz. But the real power behind this update of the 1977 Broadway musical is Will Smith and Jay-Z, with the latter also working on the soundtrack.

Directed by Will Gluck (Easy A), the film stars Wallis as the plucky little orphan who enters the life of rich politician Benjamin Stacks and turns his world upside down. Diaz plays Miss Hannigan, the cruel orphanage owner making Annie's life miserable, while Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale, Tracie Thoms, and Adewale Akkinuoye-Agbage co-star.

Keep an eye out for the full trailer which debuts later this evening. Annie opens on Christmas Day, and you can check out the official plot synopsis below.

PLOT: A Broadway classic that has delighted audiences for generations comes to the big screen with a new, contemporary vision in Columbia Pictures’ comedy, Annie. Director/Producer/Screenwriter Will Gluck teams with producers James Lassiter, Will Smith & Jada Pinkett Smith, and Shawn “JAY Z” Carter, Laurence “Jay” Brown, and Tyran “Ty Ty” Smith with a modern telling that captures the magic of the classic characters and original show that won seven Tony Awards. Celia Costas serves as Executive Producer. The screenplay is by Will Gluck and Aline Brosh McKenna, based on the musical stage play “Annie,” book by Thomas Meehan, music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin, and on “Little Orphan Annie,” © and ® Tribune Media Services, Inc.

Academy Award® nominee Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) stars as Annie, a young, happy foster kid who’s also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York in 2014. Originally left by her parents as a baby with the promise that they’d be back for her someday, it’s been a hard knock life ever since with her mean foster mom Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz). But everything’s about to change when the hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx) – advised by his brilliant VP, Grace (Rose Byrne) and his shrewd and scheming campaign advisor, Guy (Bobby Cannavale) – makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in. Stacks believes he’s her guardian angel, but Annie’s self-assured nature and bright, sun-will-come-out-tomorrow outlook on life just might mean it’s the other way around.

Razzie Awards: 'After Earth', 'Movie 43' Dishonored with 3 "Wins" Each

Many call the day of the Academy Awards the Super Bowl for movie fans, but for others it's like cinematic tax day. And those who are paying the price for their filmic indiscretions in 2013 are those responsible for inflicting After Earth and Movie 43 on us.

The Razzie Awards came out with their awards for the worst movies and performances of 2013, and *shocker* there's not an Adam Sandler sighting to be found. Instead, their wrath is aimed at another soft target: Will and Jaden Smith. Will took home Worst Actor for his performance in After Earth, with Jaden taking Worst Supporting Actor, and the pair dishonored with Worst Screen Ensemble. It's worth noting that the Razzies, which have become more pointless than ever as they aim for easy comedy targets that will gain them media attention, didn't recognize that Jaden was the lead actor in After Earth but it doesn't really matter.

If there's such a thing as the top Razzie awards, then Movie 43 took them all. The sketch comedy, which features an Oscar-worthy cast in a seemingly endless series of unfunny gross-out gags, earned Worst Movie, Worst Screenplay, and Worst Director awarded to all 13 directors who took part in making it happen. Other easy targets for the Razzies were the box office bomb, The Lone Ranger, and Kim Kardashian for her supporting appearance in Tyler Perry's Temptation. Full announcement is below, and I think this article in The Telegraph encapsulates why I think the Razzies are worthy of ridicule.

The results are in, the envelopes have been opened, and the "winners" of the 34th Awards have been unveiled in ceremonies held at Hollywood's coolest new venue — just down the street from Sunday night's Oscars — IgnitedSpaces. The hour long show handed out at least one statuette to four of the five Worst Picture nominees, but Adam Sandler and his unfunny follow up Grown Ups 2 went home empty-handed.

Taking three of the top awards was the star-studded, snicker-free sketch comedy Movie 43, which "won" for Worst Screenplay (written by at least 19 people), Worst Director ("credited" to 13 people), and Worst Picture. Tying with 43, and also "winning" 3 gold spray-painted trophies, was the Will and Jaden Smith sci-fi fiasco After Earth. Dad Will Smith took Worst Supporting Actor, son Jaden was named Worst Lead Actor, and the combination of father & son, described in the ceremony as being "stranded on Planet Nepotism", took the award for Worst Screen Combo.

Rounding out the names read when the envelopes were torn were: Tyler Perry (in drag) as Worst Actress for his 8th time playing the cross-dressing character in A Madea Christmas; Kim Kardashian in Tyler Perry's Temptation as Worst Supporting Actress; and the year's biggest box office bomb, a $250 million "reboot" of The Lone Ranger (on which Disney took a $200 million tax write off) which was chosen as Worst Remake/Rip-Off or Sequel.

Will Smith Circles Sci-Fi Thriller, 'Brilliance'; 'Focus' Gets Winter 2015 Date

It's been a rough year for Will Smith as the former box office champ doesn't have the pull he once did. Last year's After Earth bombed quite publicly, and his hysterical appearances in the equally-disastrous Winter's Tale didn't do much to help. That didn't stop him from turning down an Independence Day sequel, and perhaps he did it because something else of a similar genre was on the table.

Smith is circling a lead role in Brilliance, a sci-fi film based on the trilogy of novels by Marcus Sakey. Julius Onah (The Girl is in Trouble) is directing from a David Koepp script, and it sounds a lot like the X-men, or maybe Brian Michael Bendis' comic, Powers. Here's the book synopsis:

In Wyoming, a little girl reads people’s darkest secrets by the way they fold their arms. In New York, a man sensing patterns in the stock market racks up $300 billion. In Chicago, a woman can go invisible by being where no one is looking. They’re called “brilliants,” and since 1980, one percent of people have been born this way. Nick Cooper is among them; a federal agent, Cooper has gifts rendering him exceptional at hunting terrorists. His latest target may be the most dangerous man alive, a brilliant drenched in blood and intent on provoking civil war. But to catch him, Cooper will have to violate everything he believes in—and betray his own kind.

The second book in the series will be published soon, and this is clearly being eyed as a potential franchise for Smith, his first since Men in Black wrapped up.

Before that, we'll see Smith back in theaters next year, and nope it won't be during the thick of summer. Told you times were rough. His con-man film, Focus, has been set for February 27th 2015. A winter date for a Will Smith movie? Is that a bad sign or what? Directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, with Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) co-starring, it stars Smith as a con artist whose romantic relationship with a young upstart comes back to haunt him years later.  [TheWrap]

Review: 'Winter's Tale' Starring Colin Farrell and Russell Crowe

There's a reason Mark Helprin's quasi-religious book of spiritual hokum Winter's Tale has sat around for thirty years waiting to be adapted into a feature film. Dense, messy, and largely inept as a piece of romantic fantasy, it sits idle on the page no matter how many soaring speeches, flying horses, or fateful expressions of eternal love he poured into the voluminous tome. But superstar writer/producer Akiva Goldsman has always had an aching to adapt the material for his directorial debut, and while he dialed up all of his celebrity pals to get the project off the ground, no amount of star power can pump life into such an inert offering.

It's not totally Goldsman's fault as the source material is an incomprehensible, unwieldy slog, forcing the filmmaker to kick to the curb huge chunks of the story and numerous important characters. Without the streamlining effort we'd be talking about an incomprehensible 5-hour epic that by the end of it would still have audiences wondering what the sh*t they just sat through. As it stands, fans who plowed through the novel will be left disappointed that so much has been altered without any real benefit. Those new to the story will be curious how a film with such glowing rhetoric about fate, destiny, and the power of love can have so little heart.

Colin Farrell puts on his Irish charm to modest effect as Peter Lake, a petty thief navigating the tough streets of 1814 New York City. Lake's family had been immigrants turned away from entering the country, but they floated their baby boy to America in a replica ship. Growing up an orphan he turned to crime and fell in with brutal gangster Pearly Soames (Russell Crowe, scarred and sneering), who for unknown reasons now wants to kill Lake. Cornered by Soames' gang, Lake happens upon a magical white horse that becomes his "guardian" and friend, saving him on numerous occasions. The horse, which in the novel is known as Athansor, has a richer backstory that the film largely ignores, leaving us to wonder what the animal is and why it chooses Lake. We also come to learn that Pearly isn't just another crime boss; he's literally on the side of the demons battling against the forces of good and taking his evil marching orders from Lucifer himself, played with hysterical awfulness by Will Smith. Goldsman must have incriminating I am Legendphotos stashed away somewhere

After escaping on his magical steed, Lake is encouraged by the horse, not quite in Mr. Ed style but kind of telepathically, to rob the mansion home of a wealthy newspaper editor (William Hurt). The decision proves to be a fateful one as he meets the beautiful, flame-haired Beverly Penn (Jessica Brown Findlay), and despite his coming to rob the place, the two fall instantly in love. Not just an ordinary love, but the type of love that transcends time and space. And transcend their love does as the film inexplicably leaps forward in time to the present with Lake as a stumbling amnesiac drawing images in the pavement and easing his way rather easily into the life of a mother and her sickly daughter (Jennifer Connelly and Ripley Sobo). Neither seems all that concerned about the incredible circumstances surrounding Lake's presence in our time. Nobody seems all that concerned about anything, really. Except for Smith, who seems positively appalled that he's in this movie. Crowe is cheesy enough that we can assume he's having fun helping out his Cinderella Man scribe.

Beautifully shot in storybook flourishes by Caleb Deschanel, it's forever burdened by Goldsman's bloated script and Hans Zimmer's intrusive score. Not even the acclaimed musical maestro can get any emotion to ring true as Goldsman explores existential themes with the deftness of a lead weight.
Belief in miracles and the power of faith form the backbone of Helprin's story, and perhaps to an audience of the converted that's enough to overlook all of the fantastical contrivances that remain unexplained. But for those who require at least a little bit of plotting and characterization, the utter lack of either will be a constant frustration that Goldsman never seeks to correct. Often ranked high on the list of books deemed unfilmmable, it would have been better if Winter's Tale remained unfilmed.

Will Smith Turns Down 'Independence Day 2'

There's been a great deal of indecision for Will Smith in deciding whether to return for Independence Day 2, and that's caused 20th Century Fox and Roland Emmerich to prepare accordingly. Emmerich had two versions of the script drafted; one that features the return of Smith's character, and another that left him out. And now it seems as if he's finally made a decision...or is very close to it.

Deadline reports that Smith won't return for the film, which may go by the title ID Forever. Or at least the site says he will make that decision known to Emmerich and Fox soon, noting that this shouldn't be set in stone due to Smith constantly changing his mind. The plan is to have the film ready for the 20th anniversary (!!!!) in 2016 but now they'll have to figure out a way to draw audiences in without Smith's star power. Emmerich has noted that costs are a bigger issue this time around and not having Smith should help out the budget immensely. But let's be honest in that he's also the main reason anybody remembers Independence Day, it's the movie that made him a box office star, and losing him will affect the bottom line.

Michael B. Jordan has been eyed to take on a role and he probably make for solid "replacement" if Fox doesn't keep him busy with Fantastic Four. Doubtful he'd have time for both. Independence Day 2 is set to open July 1st 2016.

DJ Caruso to Direct Possible Will Smith Project, 'Selling Time'

Will Smith may have dropped a dud earlier this year with After Earth, but that doesn't mean he's straying far from the sci-fi genre. Last fall we learned he was eying yet another film, titled Selling Time, and a number of A-list directors were circling it. Now one has been found with Eagle Eye and I Am Number Four helmer DJ Caruso coming aboard.

Caruso, who most recently went against-type and directed the coming-of-age flick Standing Up, will take on the film about a man who gives up seven years of life expectancy to relive the single worst day of his life. As for Smith, he's still not locked in for the lead role even though he's been interested in quite awhile. Spike Lee and numerous other writers have given the script a pass, but now original scribe Dan McDermott is back on to try and punch it up to Smith's expectations.

Smith will be seen next in heist flick, Focus, alongside Margot Robbie. [Deadline]

Will Smith to Star in Supernatural Thriller, 'Selling Time'

When all is said and done, 20th Century Fox may not be able to convince Will Smith to come back for Independence Day 2. The jury's still out on that one. But however that shakes out they plan on keeping him under their umbrella and have set him for a project he was attached to some time ago.

The Wrap reports that Smith is back on board for Selling Time, a supernatural thriller originally written by Dan McDermott. Smith will play a man who trade seven years of his life expectancy for a chance to relive the single worst day in his life. Spike Lee was among those who took a pass at the script over the years, and perhaps he's among the "several A-list filmmakers" reportedly circling the director's chair.

With no director in place and Smith yet to be officially signed this is a project that is still a ways off, so just add it to the actor's list of projects that will hopefully make us forget about After Earth.

Two 'Independence Day 2' Scripts Written, But Only One Includes Will Smith

The success or failure of Roland Emmerich's Independence Day sequel may depend on whether Will Smith returns as fighter pilot Captain Heller. For the most part, Smith has played close to the vest on his decision, and it seems like every time a new rumor surfaces on the issue, the situation has changed. Emmerich isn't taking any chances, and had screenwriter James Vanderbilt pen two different versions of the script.

While talking to ThePlaylist, Emmerich revealed that Will Smith's character is included in only one of the two scripts that have been completed by Vanderbilt. It's an unusual approach but makes sense just in case production needs to move forward without him. The director does seem confident, though, remarking that "It's looking good" on a Smith return.

What's unclear is if either script includes Captain Heller's grown up son, who some have been saying could be played by Michael B. Jordan. The only confirmed cast at this stage are the returning Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman, although Emmerich has suggested there could be more. He also seems to have scrapped plans to split the story into two separate movies.

Independence Day 2 is set to open July 3rd 2015.
